And the name of the place was called Perez Ozah vnto thys daye. ⁹ And Dauid was then afrayed of the Lord, and sayd: how shulde the arcke of the Lord come to my house ¹⁰ And so Dauid wolde not bryng the arcke of the Lord wyth hym into the cytye of Dauid. But caryed it into the house of Obed Edom a Gethite. ¹¹ And the arcke of the Lorde continued in the house of Obed Edom the Gethite, thre monethes, and the Lorde blessed Obed Edom and all hys housholde. ¹² And when it was told Kynge Dauid howe that the Lorde had blessed the house of Obed Edom and all that pertayned vnto hym, because of the arck of God he went and brought the arcke of God from the house of Obed Edom vnto the cytye of Dauid wyth gladnes.

¹⁴ And this is the order in the houses of their fathers, of the capitaynes ouer thousandes in Iuda: Ednah the captayne, and with hym of fyghthynge men thre hundred thousande. ¹⁵ And nexte to him Iehohanan a captayne and with him two hundreth & .lxxx. thousand. ¹⁶ And by his side Amaziah the sonne of Zechri willynge vnto the Lord, & with him two hundred thousand myghty men. ¹⁷ And of the children of Beniamin, Eliada was a man of might, and had with hym armed with bowes & shyldes two hundred thousande. ¹⁸ And by his syde Iehosabad wyth whome were an hundred & .lxxx. thousande trimmed for warre.

³ And Iehosaphat feared, & let him selfe to seke the Lorde, & proclaymed fastinge thorow out al Iuda.

¹⁷ Moreouer it belongeth not to you for to fight in this quarell: but stepe forth and stande and behold the helpe of the Lorde whiche is wyth you: feare not, nor let youre hartes fayle you, O ye of Iuda and of Ierusalem. To morow go out to them: for the Lorde is with you.

¹³ but the men of the armie which Amaziah had turned backe and wold not let go with his people to battell, ranne vpon the cities of Iuda from Samaria vnto Bethhoron and slue thre thousande of them and wanne moche spoyle.

¹⁶ And as the prophet spake to him, he sayde to the prohhete: haue men made the of the kynges councell? cease, leste thou be beaten. And the prophete ceased and sayde: I am sure that God hath taken councell to destroye the, because thou hast done this, and obeyest not my councell.

²⁰ But Amaziah rested not: for it came of God, euen to delyuer them into the handes of theyr enemyes: and that because they had sought the Gods of the Edomites.

¹⁴ And Oziah prouyded them thorow oute al the host shildes, speares, helmettes, habergynnes, bowes & slinges for stones.

⁶ For Phakeh the sonne of Romeliah slue in Iuda an hundred and twentye thousand in one daye, & all fyghtynge men: & that because they had forsaken the Lorde God of theyr fathers. ⁷ And Zechri a myghtye man in mount Ephraim slue Maasiah the kynges sonne, and Africam the Lord stuarde of housholde, & Elcanah that was next to the kyng. ⁸ And the children of Israel toke prysoners of theyre brethren two hundred thousand wyues, sonnes and daughters, and therto caryed awaye moche spoyle of them, and brought yt to Samaria. ⁹ But there was a prophete of the Lordes named obed which went out to the Host that came to Samaria & sayde to them: se, because the Lorde God of your fathers was wroth with Iuda, he deliuered them into youre handes. And ye haue slayne them with cruelnesse that reacheth vp to heauen. ¹⁰ And now ye purpose to kepe vnder the chyldren of Iuda and Ierusalem and to make them bondemen & bondwemen. What other thynge do ye (ye vnhappye) then offende the Lorde youre God.

⁵ And they decreed that yt should be proclaymed thorow out all Israel from Bersabe to Dan, that they should come and holde the feast of passeouer vnto the Lorde God of Israel at Ierusalem: for they had not often done yt, as yt is written how they shoulde.

¹ And when the seuenth monethe came, & the chyldren of Israell were nowe in their cytyes, the people came together euen as one man, vnto Ierusalem.

²¹ And euen there at the water besyde Ahaua, caused I a fastynge to be proclamed, that we myghte humble oure selues before oure God, to seke of him a ryght waye for vs, and oure chyldren and all oure substaunce.

⁴ And there resorted vnto me all such as feared the worde of the Lorde God of Israell because of the greate transgression. And I sate mournynge vntyll the euenynge sacryfyce. ⁵ And aboute the euenynge sacryfyce I rose vp from my heauynes, & rente my clothes & my rayment, and fel vpon my knees, and spred out my handes vnto the Lorde my God,

¹ al the people gathered themselues together as one man vpon the strete before the Watergate, and sayde vnto Esdras the scrybe, that he shulde fetche the boke of the lawe of Moses, whiche the Lorde commaunded to Israell.

¹ And the rulers of the people dwelt at Ierusalem. But the other people cast lottes therfor, so that amonge ten one parte wente to Ierusalem into the holy citie to dwell, and nyne partes in the cytyes.

¹² If he be hasty to take enye thynge awaye, who will make hym restore it agayne? Who wyll saye vnto hym: what doest thou? ¹³ He is God, whose wrath no man maye withstande: but the proudest of all muste stoupe vnder hym.

²⁵ For he hath stretched out hys hande agaynste God, and armed him selfe agaynst the Almyghtye. ²⁶ He rounneth proudly vpon him, and with a stiff necke fyghteth he agaynst him:

⁵ the prayse of the vngodlye hath bene shorte, and that the ioye of ypocrites continued but the twyncklyng of an eye?

¹³ They spent their dayes in welthinesse: but sodenlye they go doune to hel.

¹⁶ A kynge is not helped by hys owne great hoost, neyther is a giaunte saued thorow the myght of hys owne strength.

⁵ They haue deuysed myschefe, and communed amonge them selues, how they may laye snares: tush (saye they) who shall se them?

¹⁸ Namely, how thou hast set them in a slippery place, that thou mayst cast them doune headlinges and destroye them. ¹⁹ O how sodenly do they consume, perysh, and come to a fearful ende?

¹⁹ Thy waye was in the sea, and thy pathes in the greate waters, yet coulde noman know thy fotesteppes.

³⁴ When he slewe them, they sought hym, & turned them early vnto God. ³⁵ They thoughte then that God was theyr succour, and that the hye God was their redemer. ³⁶ Neuerthelesse they dyd but flatter him in their mouthes, and dissembled with hym in their tonges.

⁶⁰ So that he forsoke the Tabernacle in Silo, euen his habitacyon wherin he dwelte amonge men. ⁶¹ He delyuered their power into captyuitye and their glory into the enemies hande.

² Cloudes & darkenesse are round about him, righteousnesse & iudgement are the habitacion of hys seate.

⁹ He will not alwaye be chydynge, neither will he kepe his anger for euer. ¹⁰ He hath not dealt with vs after oure sinnes, nor rewarded vs according to our wickednesse.

⁵ Put thy trust in the Lord wyth all thyne hert, and leane not vnto thyne own vnderstandinge. ⁶ In all thy wayes haue respecte vnto hym, & he shal ordre thy goinges.

¹⁹ But the waye of the vngodly is as the darcknes, wherin men fal, or thei be aware.

³³ The lotts are caste into the lappe, but there fal standeth in the Lorde.

¹⁹ The vnitie of brethren is stronger then a castel, and they that hold together are like the barre of a palayce.

¹⁸ Thorow counsayl the thynges that men deuise go forward: and with discrecion ought warres to be taken in hande.

³ To do ryghtuousnes & iudgment is more acceptable to the Lorde then sacrifyce.

³ A wise man seith the plage and hideth him self, but the folysh go on styl and are punished.

⁶ For wt discrecion must warres be taken in hand, & wher as are many thou can geue councell, there is the victorye.

¹ He that is styfnecked and wyll not be refourmed, shal sodenly be destroied without any helpe

⁶ The synne of the wycked is his owne snare, but the ryghtuons shall be glad and reioyse.

¹¹ Because now that euell worckes are not hastely punyshed the herte of man geueth hym selfe ouer vnto wyckednesse. ¹² But thoughe an euell persone offende an hundred tymes, and haue a longe life: yet am I sure, that it shall go well wyth them that feare God, because they haue hym before their eyes.

¹ For all these thynges purposed I in my mynd to seke out. The ryghtuous and wyse yea and their workes also are in the hande of God: and their is no man knoweth eyther the loue or hate of the thyng that he hath before him. ² It happeneth vnto one as vnto another: It goeth wt the ryghtuous as wt the vngodli wt the good & cleane as wt the vncleane: wt him that offereth as wt him that offereth not: lyke as it goeth wyth the vertuous, so goeth it also wyth the sinner: As it happeneth vnto the periured, so happeneth it also vnto him that is afraied to be forsworne. ³ Amonge all thynges that come to passe vnder the Sunne, this is a mysery, that it happeneth vnto all alyke. This is the cause also that the hertes of men are ful of wyckednes, and mad folishnes is in their hertes as longe as they liue, vntyl they dye.

¹⁰ Whatsoeuer thou takest in hande to do, that do wyth all thy power: for among the dead, wher as thou goest vnto, ther is nether worcke, councel, knowledge ner wysdome.

¹² For a man knoweth not his tyme, but like as the fishes are taken wyth the angle and as the byrdes are catched with the snare Euen so are men taken in the perilous time, when it commeth sodenly vpon them.

¹⁰ Pvt awaye displeasure oute of thine hert, & remoue euel from thy body: for childhode & youth is but vanitie.

⁶ Who is thys that commeth out of the wildernesse lyke pylers of smoke as it were a smell of Myrre, franckencence and al maner spyces of the Apotecary?

⁹ And excepte the Lord of hostes had lefte vs a fewe alyue: we shulde haue ben as Sodoma, and lyke vnto Gomorra.

¹⁰ Then shall they saye. O happye are the godly, for they maye enioye the frutes of theyr studyes. ¹¹ But wo be to the vngodlye & vnryghtuous for they shall be rewarded after theyr worckes.

²⁹ and go ouer the foorde. Gabaah shalbe their restinge place, Rhamah shalbe afrayed, Gabaah Saul shall fle awaye.

⁸ they shall stande in feare, carefulnesse and sorowe shal come vpon them, and they shal haue payne, as a woman that trauaileth with childe. One shal euer be abasshed of another, and their faces shall burne lyke the flamme. ⁹ For lo, the daye of the Lorde shall come, terrible, full of indignacion and wrathe, to make the lande waste, and to rote oute the synne therof.

¹⁴ The synners at Syon are afrayd a sodane fearfulnesse is come vpon the ypocrytes. What is he among vs (saye they) that will dwell by that consumynge fyre whyche of vs maye abyde that euerlastinge heate?

¹¹ Therfore shall trouble come vpon the, & thou shalt not knowe, from whence it shall aryse. Myschefe shal fall vpon the, which thou shalt not be able to put of. A sodane myserye shall come vpon the, or euer thou be a warre.

¹ Beholde, the Lordes hand is not so shortened, that it can not helpe, neyther is his care so stopped, that it maye not heare.

¹² Go to my place in Silah, wherevnto I gaue my name afore tyme, & loke wel what I did to the same place for the wyckednes of my people of Israell.

²³ Now I knowe (O Lorde) that it is not in mans power to ordre hys owne wayes, or to rule hys owne steppes and goinges.

¹ O Lorde, thou art more rightuous then that I shulde dyspute with the: Neuertheles, lett me talke wyth the in thynges resonable. How happeneth it, that the waye of the vngodlye is so prosperous: and that it goeth so well with them, which (without eny shame) offende and lyue in wyckednesse?

⁷ Doutles oure owne wickednesse rewarde vs: But Lorde do thou accordinge to thy name, though oure transgressyons and synnes be many.

³ Gymel. Iuda is taken presoner, because she was defiled: and for seruynge so manye straunge goddes, she dwelleth now amonge the Heythen. She fyndeth no rest, all they that persecuted her, toke her, & so she dwelleth amonge her enemyes.

³² But though he do cast of, yet accordynge to the multitude of hys mercyes, he receyueth to grace agayne.

¹⁰ In the haue they discouered their fathers shame, in the haue they vexed wemen in their sicknesse. ¹¹ Euery man hath dealte shamefully wyth hys neyghboures wyfe, and abhomynably defiled his doughter in law. In the hath euery man forced his owne syster, euen his fathers doughter:

¹⁵ I wyll go, and returne to my place, tyll they waxe faynt and seke my.

⁹ They be gone to farre, & haue destroyed themselues, like as they dyd afore tyme at Gabaa. Therfore their wyckednes shalbe remembred, and their synnes punyshed.

⁹ O Israel, thou hast synned as Gabaa did afore tyme, where they remayneth, shoulde not the battel then come vpon the wicked children, as wel as vpon the Gabaonites?

¹⁴ Proclame a fastynge, call the congregacyon, gather the elders & all the inhabiters of the lande together into the house of the Lord your God, & crye vnto the Lorde:

¹² Now therfore sayeth the Lorde: Turne you vnto me wyth all youre hertes, wyth fastynge, wepynge and mournynge, ¹³ rente your hertes & not youre clothes. Turne you vnto the Lorde youre God, for he is gracyons and mercyfull, longe sufferyng and of great compassyon, & ready to pardone wickednes. ¹⁴ Then (no doute) he also shall turne, & forgeue: and after hys chasteninge, he shall let youre increase remayne, for meat & drynckeofferinges vnto the Lorde youre God? ¹⁵ Blowe oute with the trompet in Syon, proclame a fastynge, cal the congregacyon, ¹⁶ and gather the people together: warne the congregacyon, gather the elders, brynge the chyldren & suckelynges together. Let the brydgrome go forth of his chambre, & the bryde oute of her closet. ¹⁷ Let the prestes serue the Lorde betwixte the porche & the aulter, weping and saying: be fauourable (O Lorde) be fauourable vnto thy people: let not thyne herytage be broughte to suche confusyon, leste the Heathen be Lordes therof. Wherfore shulde they saye amonge the Heathen: where is nowe theyr God? ¹⁸ Then shall the Lorde be gelous ouer hys lande, & spare his people:

³⁰ I wyll shewe wonders in heauen aboue, and tokens in the earth beneth: bloude and fyre, and the vapour of smoke.

⁷ And they sayde one to another: come, lett vs cast lottes: that we maye knowe, for whose cause we are thus troubled. And so they cast lottes, and the lot fell vpon Ionas.

⁵ And the people of Niniue beleued God, and proclamed fastynge, and arayed them selues in sack cloth, as wel the greate as the small of them. ⁶ And the tydinges came vnto the kynge of Niniue, whyche arose out of hys seate, and dyd hys apparell of, and put on sack cloth, & sate hym downe in asshes. ⁷ And it was cryed and commaunded in Niniue, by the auctorite of the king and hys lordes, sayenge: se that nether man or beast, oxe or shepe taste ought at all: and that they nether fede ner drinke water: ⁸ but put on sack cloth both man and beast, and crye myghtely vnto God: yee se that euery man turne from hys euell waye, and from the wyckednesse, that he hath in hande. ⁹ Who can tell? God maye turne, & repente & cease from his fearce wrath, that we perish not. ¹⁰ And when God sawe their workes, how they turned from their wicked wayes, he repented on the euell, whych he sayde he wolde do vnto them, and dyd it not.

² O Lord, when I hearde speake of the, I was afrayed. The worck that thou hast taken in hande, shalt thou perfourme in his tyme (O Lord): and when thy time commeth, thou shalte declare it. In thy verye wrath thou thinckest vpon mercye.

¹⁰ Men shall go about the whole earth, as vpon a feld: from Gibea to Remnon, & from the south to Ierusalem. The shal be set vp, & inhabited in her place: from BenIamins porte, vnto the place of the first port, & vnto the corner porte, & from the tower of Hananeel, vnto the kinges wine presses.

²⁵ Agre with thine aduersary quickly, whiles thou art in the way wt him, lest the aduersary deliuer the to the iudge, & the iudge deliuer the to the minister, & then thou be cast into prison.

¹⁵ Moreouer, if thy brother trespase agaynst the, Go and tell hym hys fault betwene hym and the alone. If he heare the, thou hast wonne thy brother. ¹⁶ But if he heare the not, then take yet with the one or two, that in the mouthe of two or thre witnesses, all thynges may be stablished. ¹⁷ If he heare not them, tell it vnto the congregacion. If he heare not the congregacion, take hym as a Heathen man, & as a publican. ¹⁸ Verely I saye vnto you, whatsoeuer ye bynde on earth, shalbe bounde in heauen. And whatsoeuer ye lowse on erth, shalbe lowsed in heauen.

⁴⁴ Therfore be ye also redye, for in the houre ye thinke he woulde not, wyll the sonne of man come.

⁵⁸ Whyle thou goest with thyne aduersarye to the ruler, as thou arte in the waye, geue dyligence that thou mayest be delyuered from hym, leaste he brynge the to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer the to the iayler, & the iayler cast the into pryson. ⁵⁹ I tell the, thou departest not thence, tyll thou haue made good the vttermoste myte.

³¹ Or what kynge goeth to make batayle agaynste another kynge, & sytteth not doune fyrste, and casteth in hys mynd, whyther he be able with ten thousande to mete hym that cometh against him with twentye thousande. ³² Or els whyle the other is yet a great waye of, he wyll send embassetours, and desire peace.

²⁷ They ate, they dranke, they maryed wyues, and were maryed euen vnto the same daye that Noe wente into the arke, and the floude came & destroyed them all. ²⁸ Lykewyse also, as it chaunsed in the dayes of Lot. They ate, they dranke they bought, they solde, they planted, they buylte.

²⁶ and mens hertes shall fayle them for feare, & for lokinge after those thinges whiche shall come on the earth. For the powers of heauen shal moue.

³⁴ Take hede to your selues, lest youre hertes be ouercome with surfetinge and dronkenes and cares of this worlde: and that that day come not on you vnwares.

²⁶ And they gaue forth theyr lottes, and the lot fell on Mathias, and he was counted with the eleuen Apostles.

³² Whyche men though they knewe the ryghtuousnes of God, howe that they which such thinges commit, are worthy of death, yet not onely do the same, but also haue pleasure in them that do them.

⁵ But thou after thyne harde herte that can not repente, heapeste the together the treasure of wrath againste the daye of vengaunce, when shall be opened the rightuous iudgement of God,

⁵ If our vnryghtuousnes make the ryghtuousnes of God more excellent: what shall we saye? Is God vnrightuous which taketh vengeaunce? I speake after the maner of men,

³³ O the deapnes of the abundaunte wysedome and knoweledge of God: howe vnsearcheable are his iudgementes, and hys wayes paste fyndynge out?

¹⁸ If it be possyble, how be it of your part, haue peace with all men.

¹ There goeth a commen, saiynge: that there is fornicacion amonge you, and such fornication as is not ones named amonge the Gentiles: that one should haue his fathers wyfe.

⁶ Your reioysing is not good: knowe ye not that a lytle leuen sowreth the whole lompe of dowe.

¹⁰ And I meant not at al of the fornicatours of this worlde, eyther of the couetous, or of extorsioners, eyther of the ydolaters: for then muste ye nedes haue gone oute of the world. ¹¹ But nowe I writte vnto you, that ye companye not together, if anie that is called a brother be a fornicatour, or couetous, or a worshiper of ymages, eyther a raylar, either a drounkard, or an extorcionar: with him that is such, se that ye eate not. ¹² For what haue I to do, to iudge them which are without? Do ye not iudge them, that are within?

³ When they shal say peace and no daunger, then commeth on them soden destruccion, as the trauaylynge of a woman wyth chyld, and they shal not escape.

⁵ Yf anye of you lacke wysedome, let hym axe of God whiche geueth to all men indyfferentlye, and casteth no man in the teath: and it shal be geuen hym.

¹² But these as brute beastes naturallye made to be taken and destroyed, speake euyll of that they knowe not, and shal perishe thorow their owne destruccion,

¹⁵ And the kynges of the earth, & the greate men and the ryche men, and the chiefe captaines, and the myghty men, and euerye bonde man, and euery free man, hyd them selues in dennes, and in rockes: ¹⁶ fal on vs, and hyde vs from the presence of hym that sitteth on the seate, and from the wrath of the lambe, ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come: And who can endure it?

⁴ And I hearde another voice from heauen say: Come awaye from her my people, that ye be not partakers in her sinnes, & that ye receiue not of her plages. ⁵ For his sonnes are gone vp to heauen, & God hath remembred her wickednes.

⁸ Therfore shal her plages come at one daye, death, and sorowe, and honger, and she shalbe brente wyth fyre, for stronge is the Lorde God, whiche iudgeth her. ⁹ And the kynges of the earth shal bewepe her & wayle ouer her, which haue committed fornicacion with her, & haue lyued wantonly with her, when they shal se the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ & shal stand a farre of, for feare of her punishmente, saying: Alas, Alas, that great citie Babilon, that myghty cytie. For at one houre is her iudgemente come.

³ And again they said: Alleluia. And smoke rose vp for euermore.
