¹ And the men of Israel sware in Mazphah sayinge: there shall none of vs geue his doughter vnto any of Beniamin to wife. ² And the people came to Bethel and abode there till euen, before God & lifte vp their voyces and wept sore ³ and sayd: O Lord God of Israel, why is this chaunsed in Israell that there shoulde be this daye one tribe lacking in Israel? ⁴ And on the morow the people rose vp by tyme, and made there an altare, and offered burntofferinges and peace offeringes. ⁵ And the children of Israel asked, who are they among all the tribes of Israel that came not with the congregacion vnto the Lorde? for they had made a greate othe concerninge them that came not vp to the Lorde to Mazphah saying: that they should surely dye. ⁶ And the children of Israel had pytie on Beniamin their brethren, and sayd: there is one tribe cut of from Israel this daye: ⁷ what shal we do vnto the remnaunt of them, for to get them wyues, for as muche as we haue sworne by the Lorde, that we wyll not geue them of oure doughters to wyues, ⁸ Then they sayde, what are they of the trybes of Israel, that came not vp to Mazphah to the Lorde. ⁹ And beholde there came none of the enhabitoures of Iabes Galaad vnto the congregacion. And when the people were vewed: beholde there were none of the enhabiters of Iabes Galaad there. ¹⁰ And the congregacion sente thether .xij. thousand men of the strongest of them, and commaunded them saying: go and smyte the enhabiters of Iabes Galaad with the edge of the swerde both wemen & children. ¹¹ And this is that ye shal do: vtterlie destroye al the males & al the wemen that haue lyen by men. ¹² And they founde among the enhabiters of Iabes Galaad foure hundred damoselles vyrgynis, that had knowen no man by lying with any male. And they broughte them vnto the host to Siloh, which is in the land of Canaan. ¹³ And the hole congregacion sente and spake with the children of Beniamin, that were in the Rocke of pomgarnettes, and called paceablye vnto them, ¹⁴ and Beniamin came agayne at that tyme, and they gaue them the wemen which they had saued a lyue of the wemen of Iabes Galaad. But they so suffised them not. ¹⁵ And the people had compassion on Beniamin because that God had made a gappe in the tribes of Israel. ¹⁶ And then the elders of the congregacion sayde: what shal we do to the remnaunt of them, to get them wiues seing al the wiues of Beniamin are destroyed? ¹⁷ And they sayde: there must be an enheritaunce for them that be escaped of Beniamin, that a trybe be not destroied out of Israel: ¹⁸ how be it we may not geue them wiues of oure doughters. For the children of Israel had made an adiuracion saying: cursed be he that geueth a wyfe to Beniamin. ¹⁹ Then they sayde: beholde there is a feaste of the Lorde yerlye in Siloh, which is on the northsyde of Bethell, and on the east syde of the way that goeth from Bethel to Sichem, and south from Libanon. ²⁰ And they commaunded the children of Beniamin saying: go and lye in wayte in the vyneyardes. ²¹ And when ye se that the doughters of Siloh come oute to daunce in a rowe, then come ye oute of the vyneyardes, and catche you euerye man a wyfe of the doughters of Siloh, & get you vnto the lande of Beniamin. ²² And yf theyr fathers or brethren come vnto vs to complaine, we wyl saye vnto them: haue pytye on them, because we reserued not to eche man his wife in time of warre, and therto because that ye gaue them none in due tyme, ye were to blame. ²³ And the children of Beniamin dyd euen so: and toke them wyues accordynge to the numbre of them of the dauncers, whyche they caught. And then they went and returned vnto their enheritaunce, and buylt there cytyes and dwelt in them. ²⁴ And the chyldren of Israell departed thence at that tyme and wente euerye man to hys trybe, and to his kynred, and went out from thence euery man to hys enheritaunce. ²⁵ In those dayes there was no kyng in Israel: but euerye man dyd what semed hym ryght.

²⁷ And God created man after hys likenes, after the lycknesse of god created he hym: male & female created he them.

¹³ And the selfe same daye went Noe, Sem, Ham & Iapheth, Noes sonnes, & Noes wyf & the .iij. wyues of hys sonnes with them in to the arcke:

³⁸ And Esau sayd vnto his father: haste thou but the one blessing my father? blesse me also my father: so lifted vp Esau hys voyce and wept.

²⁰ And MirIam a Prophetisse the syster of Aaron toke a tymbrell in her hand, & all the woman came out after her with tymbrels in a daunse.

²⁴ An aulter of erth thou shalte make vnto me and thereon offer thy burntofferynges & thy peace offeringes, and thy shepe and thyne oxen. And in all places where I shall put the remembraunce of my name, thither I will come vnto the & blesse the. ²⁵ But and if thou wilt make me an aulter of stone, se thou make it not of hewed stone, for if thou lift vp thy tole vpon it, thou shalt polute it.

¹⁴ Thre feastes thou shalt holde vnto me in a yere, ¹⁵ Thou shalt kepe the feaste of swete bread that thou eate vnleuened bread .vij. dayes longe, as I commaunded the in the tyme appoynted of the moneth of Abyb, for in that moneth thou camest out of Egypte: and se that no man apeare before me emptye. ¹⁶ And the feaste of Heruest, when thou reapeste the fyrst frutes of thy laboures whych thou hast sowne in the felde. And the feast of ingatherynge, in the ende of the yere when thou haste gathered in thye laboures oute of the felde.

¹² Take hede to thy selfe, that thou make no compact wyth the inhabiters of the Lande whether thou goest, least it because of ruine among you. ¹³ But ouerthrowe their aulters and breake theyr pillars, & cut downe their groues, ¹⁴ for thou shalt worshyp no straunge God. For the Lorde is called gelousee bycause he is a gelouse God: ¹⁵ lest if thou make any agremente wyth the inhabiters of the lande, when they go a whorynge after theyr Gods and do sacrifice vnto theyr Goddes, they cal the and thou eate of theyr sacrifyce: ¹⁶ and thou take of theyr daughters vnto thy sonnes, and when theyr daughters goo a whorynge after theyr Goddes,

² speake vnto the children of Israel, & say vnto them. These are the feastes of the Lorde which ye shall call holy feastes.

⁴ These are the feastes of the Lord which ye shal proclayme holy in their seasons.

⁶ And the .xv. daye of the same moneth is the feast of swete bred vnto the Lorde .vij. dayes ye must eate vnleuended bread.

¹⁰ speake vnto the chyldren of Israell and saye vnto them: when ye be come into the lande whych I geue vnto you & repe doune youre haruest ye shall brynge a shefe of the fyrst frutes of your haruest vnto the preast,

³⁴ speake vnto the chyldren of Israel and saye: the .xv. daye of the same seuenth moneth shalbe the feast of tabernacles .vij. dayes vnto the Lord.

²⁸ Notwythstandynge no dedicated thynge that a man dedycateth vnto the Lorde, of all his good whether it be man or beast or lande of his enheritaunce, shalbe solde or redemed for all dedicate thynges are moste holy vnto the Lorde. ²⁹ No dedicate thynge therfore that is dedicate of man, may be redemed, but must nedes dye.

¹⁰ Also when ye be mery in your feast dayes and in the fyrst dayes of your monethes, ye shall blowe the trompettes ouer your burnt sacryfyces and peaceofferynges, that it maye be a remembraunce of you before your GOD. I am the Lord youre God.

⁵⁵ Notwythstanding, the land shalbe deuided by lot, & accordinge to the names of the tribes of theyr, fathers they shall enheritt:

¹⁶ And the .xiiij. daye of the first moneth shalbe passeouer vnto the Lord

²⁶ And the daye of your fyrst frutes when ye brynge a newe meateofferyng vnto the Lord in your wekes shalbe an holy feast vnto you:

¹² And the .xv. day of the .vij. moneth shalbe holy day & ye shall doo no laborious worcke therin, and ye shall kepe a feast vnto the Lord of .vij. dayes longe.

¹⁷ Now therfore slee al the men chyldren and the wemen that haue lien with men fleshlye: ¹⁸ But all the wemen chyldren that haue not lyen with men, kepe a lyue for your selues.

⁷ that the enheritaunce of the chyldren of Israel roule not from trybe to trybe. But that the chyldren of Israell maye abyde, euery man in the enheritaunce of the trybe of hys fathers.

³⁴ And we toke al his cyties the same ceason and destroyed al the cities with men, wemen and chyldren and let nothyng remayne,

² and when the Lord thy God hath sett them before the that thou shouldest smyt them se that thou vtterly destroye them and make no couenaunt with theym nor haue compassyon vppon theym. Also thou shalte make no maryages wyth theim, ³ neyther gyue thy daughter vnto hys sone, nor take hys daughter vnto thy sonne.

⁸ Ye shall do after nothynge that we do here thys day, euery man what semeth hym good in hys owne eyes.

¹⁵ then thou shalt smite the dwellers of that city with the edge of the swerde, & destroye it mercilesse and all that is therin,

¹ Obserue the moneth of Abib and offer passeouer vnto the Lorde thy God. For in the moneth of Abib, the Lord thy God broughte the oute of Egypte by nyghte.

¹⁰ and kepe the feaste of wekes vnto the Lord thy God, that thou gyue a frewylofferyng of thyne hande vnto the Lorde thy God accordynge as the Lord thy God hath blessed the.

¹³ Thou shalt obserue the feast of the tabernacles .vij. dayes long, after that thou hast gathered in thy corne & thy wine.

¹⁰ When thou comest nye vnto a citie to fight against it, offre them peace.

²⁴ And then shal al nacions also say: wherfore hath the Lorde done of this facion vnto this lande? O how fearse is this great wrath?

⁷ And Iosua sayde, Ah, Lorde Iehouah, wherfore haste thou brought this people ouer Iordan to delyuer vs into the handes of the Amorytes to destroye vs: wolde to God we had aduentured & dwelt on the other side Iordan. ⁸ Oh Lorde what shall I say, when Israel turneth theyr backes before theyr enemyes: ⁹ Moreouer the Cananites, and all the inhabyters of the Lande shall heare of it, and shall come about vs, and destroye the name of vs out of the world. And then what wilt thou do vnto thy myghtye name.

²⁴ And Iosua toke Acan the sonne of Zareh, and the syluer, and the garment, and the tonge of golde, and hys sonnes and hys doughters, hys oxen, asses, shepe, hys tente and all that he had, and all Israell wyth him, & brought them vnto the valeye of Acor.

³² Labaoth, Selhim, Ain and Kemou: all these cytyes are twentye and nyne with their villages.

¹ And the whole congregacion of the children of Israell came together at Siloh, and set vp the tabernacle of wytnesse there, and the lande was in subieccyon before them.

⁴ And when the Angel of the Lorde had spoken these wordes vnto al the chyldren of Israel, the people cryed oute & wepte.

²³ Curse Meroz bad the angell of the Lorde Curse, Curse the enhabytours therof because they came not forth to helpe the Lorde, to help the Lorde amonge the myghtye.

²⁶ & make an aultare vnto the Lord thy God vpon the toppe of this rocke & furnesshe it. And take the seconde oxe & offer burnt sacryfyce wt the wood of the groue which thou shalt haue cut doune.

³⁰ And Iephthah vowed a vowe vnto the Lorde and sayd: If thou shalt deliuer the children of Ammon into my handes, ³¹ then that thinge that cometh out of the dores of my house agaynst me, when I come home in peace, from the children of Ammon, shalbe the Lordes, and I wil offer it vp a burntoffering.

³⁴ Then Iephthah came to Mazphah vnto hys house. And se, his doughter came oute agaynste hym, wyth tymberelles & daunses, which was his onely child, so that beside her, he had neyther sonne nor doughter. ³⁵ And when he sawe her, he renth his clothes, & said: Alas my doughter, thou hast made me stoupe and art one of them, that trouble me. For I haue opened my mouth vnto the Lorde, & can not go backe.

⁶ For in those dayes there was no kyng in Israel, but euery man dyd what thought hym best.

¹ In those dayes there was no Kynge in Israell. And in those dayes the trybe of Dan sought them an enheritaunce to dwell in, for vnto that tyme there fell none enheritaunce vnto them amonge the tribe of Israel.

⁷ Then the fyue men departed and came to Lais, and sawe the people that were therin, how they dwelt carelesse, and after the maner of the Sidons, stylle, and without castyng of parelles, & that no man made any trouble in the lande or vsurped any dominion, and how they were farre from the Sidons, and had no busines wyth any nacion.

³¹ And they set them vp the kerued Image which Micah made, al the whyle the house of God was in Siloh.

¹ It chaunsed in those dayes, when there was no kynge in Israell, that a certain Leuyte dwellyng on the syde of mount Ephraim, toke to wyfe a concubyne out of Bethlehem Iuda:

¹ Then all the chyldren of Israel went out: and there gathered al congregacyon together as it had bene but one man, euen from Dan to Berseba, and out of the land of Galaad, vnto the land to Marphah,

⁸ Then all the people arose, as it had bene one man sayinge: there shal not a man of vs go to his tente, neither turne into his house.

¹⁰ And we wyll take ten men of the hundred thorow out al the trybes of Israel, and an hundred of the thousand, and a thousand out of the ten thousand, to fet vitayle for the people to make that they maye go againste Gabaah Beniamin, according to all the folye, that they haue wrought in Israel.

¹⁸ And the children of Israel arose & went vp to Bethel, and asked of God, who shoulde begynne to battel agaynste the children of Beniamin, and the Lorde sayd: Iuda shal beginne.

²³ but they went fyrste vp & wept before the Lord vnto euen, and asked of the Lorde saying: shal we go againe to battel agaynste the children of Beniamin oure brethren? And the Lord sayde: go vnto them:

²⁶ Then the chyldren of Israell and all the people went vp and came vnto Bethel, and wepte and sat there before the Lorde, & fasted the same daye vnto euen, and offered burntofferinges and peace offeringes before the Lorde.

⁴⁷ onlye .vi. hundred men turned & fleed to the wildernesse, vnto the Rocke of pomgarnettes and abode there .iiij. monethes. ⁴⁸ And then the men of Israel turned backe agayne vnto the children of Beniamin, and smote them wyth the edge of the swerde in the cyties both man and beast and all that came to hande, and moreouer set all the cytyes they coulde come by, on fyre.

¹ Then Nahas the Ammonite came & beseged Iabes in Galaad. And al the people of Iabes sayd vnto Nahas: make a couenaunte wyth vs & we wylbe thy seruauntes. ² And Nahas the Amonite said: herto will I make a couenaunt wt you, euen to thrust oute all youre ryght eyes, that I may bring that shame vpon al Israel. ³ Then said the elders of Iabes: geue vs .vij. dayes respite that we maye send messengers vnto al the coastes of Israell. And then yf there come no man to help vs, we wyll come out to the.

⁷ And toke a youke of oxen & hewed them in peces, & sent them thorowout al the coastes of Israel by the handes of messengers saying: whosoeuer cometh not forth after Saul & after Samuel, so shall hys oxen be serued. Then the feare of the Lord fel on the people, & they came out as it had ben but one man.

²⁴ And the men of Israel ioyned them selues together that daye: & Saule adiured the people saying: Cursed be he that eateth anye fode vntyll nyghte, that I may be aduenged of myne enemies. And so there was none of the people that tasted any sustinaunce.

²⁸ Then spake one of the people & sayd: thy father adiured the people saying: Cursed be that man that eateth any sustinaunce this daye, and yet the people were fayntye. ²⁹ Then sayde Ionathas: my father hath troubled the land: for se, myne eyes hath receyued sighte, because I tasted a lytle of thys honye:

⁴⁵ But the people sayde vnto Saul: shall Ionathas dye whiche hath so myghtely holpe Israel? God forbyd. As truly as the Lorde lyueth, there shall not one hearre of his head fal to the ground: for he hath wroughte with God thys daye. And so the people delyuered Ionathas, that he dyed not. And then Saule departed from folowyng the Philistynes.

³ Now therfor go & smyte the Amaleckites, & onelye destroy ye all that pertayneth vnto them, & se thou haue no compassion on them. But slay both man & woman, infant & sucklyng, & oxe, shepe, camell & Asse.

⁶ And it happened as they went, when Dauid was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that wemen came out of al cytyes of Israel syngynge and daunsyng, agaynste Saul, wyth tymbrelles, wyth ioye, and wyth fydilles.

⁴ Then Dauid & the people that was wt hym lyfte vp their voyces and wept, vntyl they coulde wepe no more.

¹¹ When the enhabyters of Iabes in Galaad hearde therof, what the Philistines had done to Saul, ¹² they arose as manye as were men of warre and went all nyght and toke the karkasse of Saul & the karkases of hys sonnes from the walles of Bethsan & brought them to Iabes and burnt them there ¹³ and toke theyr bones & buryed them vnder a Tree at Iabes, & fasted seuen dayes.

⁵ he sent messengers vnto them & said vnto them: blessed are ye vnto the Lorde, that ye haue shewed suche kyndnesse vnto youre Lorde Saule, and haue buryed hym. ⁶ Wherfore the Lorde shewe you mercye and truthe agayne. And I wil do you good also, because ye haue done thys thynge.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Ioab, and sayde: shal the swerd deuoure without ende? knowest thou not that bytternesse is wont to come in the latter ende? howe longe shall it be, yer thou bydde the people returne from folowynge theyr brethren?

¹⁴ And Dauid daunsed before the Lorde wyth all hys myght in a lynnen Ephod gyrde vnto hym.

²¹ But Dauid sayd agayne to Michol, I wyll make sporte before the Lorde which chose me before thy father & before all hys kynne, commaundynge me to be ruler ouer al hys people Israel.

¹⁸ And Gad came the same daye to Dauid, and sayde vnto him: go vp and reare an aultare vnto the Lorde in the thressinge floure of Areunah the Iebusite.

²⁵ & Dauid buylt there an aultare vnto the Lord, and ofred burnt sacrifices and peace offeringes And so the Lorde was agreed wyth the lande. And the plage cea. from Israel.

⁶⁴ And the same daye the kynge halowed the mydle of the courte that is before the house of the Lord: for there he offered burntofferynges & meateofferynges, & the fat of the peaceofferynges, because the brasen aultare that was before the Lord, was to lytle to receyue the burntofferynges & meate offerynges, and the fat of the peaceofferynges.

¹¹ And Dauid was displeased, because the Lorde had rent a rent in Oza and called the sayde place Perez Oza vnto this daye.

¹³ For because ye were not ther at the fyrst tyme, the Lorde oure God made a rent amonge vs, for that we sought hym not as the fashion ought to be.

⁴ Which saye: oure tonge shoulde preuayle we are they that oughte too speake, who is Lord ouer vs?

¹ An instruccion of Asaph. O God, wherfore doest thou cast vs so cleane away? why is thy wrath so hoote agaynste the shepe of thy pasture?

³⁴ When he slewe them, they sought hym, & turned them early vnto God. ³⁵ They thoughte then that God was theyr succour, and that the hye God was their redemer.

⁶⁰ So that he forsoke the Tabernacle in Silo, euen his habitacyon wherin he dwelte amonge men.

¹² Why haste thou then broken doune her hedge, that all they whiche go by, plucke of her grapes?

³ Blowe vp the trompettes in the new mone, vpon our solempne feast daye.

³ Let them prayse his name in the daunce, let them singe prayses vnto hym with tabrettes and harpes.

⁴ Prayse hym in the cymbales and daunse prayse hym vpon the strynges and pype.

⁵ Put thy trust in the Lord wyth all thyne hert, and leane not vnto thyne own vnderstandinge.

¹² Ther is a waye whiche some men thinke to be ryght, but the ende thereof leadeth vnto death.

³ Folyshuesse maketh a man to go out of his waye, and then is his hert vnpacient agaynst the Lorde.

²⁵ It is a snare for a man to to blaspheme that which is holy, and then to go aboute wyth vowes.

⁴ A time to wepe, and a time to laugh: A time to mourne, and a tyme to daunce:

² Be not hasty with thy mouth, & let not thyne herte speake any thyng rashly before God. For God is in heauen, & thou vpon earth, therfore let thy wordes be few.

⁹ Be glad then (O thou yong man) in thy youth, and let thine herte be mery in thy yonge daies: folowe the wayes of thine owne herte, and the luste of thyne eyes: but be thou sure, that God shall brynge the into iudgement for all these thinges.

¹³ therfore shal ye haue this myschefe agayne for youre destruccyon and fall, lyke as an hye wall, that falleth because of some ryft (or blast) whose breakynge cometh sodenly.

¹⁹ I make the frutes of thankesgeuynge. I geue peace vnto them that are farre of, and to them that are nye. saye I the Lord, that make hym whole.

¹² Then the places that haue euer bene waste, shalbe buylded of the: there shalt thou lay a foundacion for many kinredes: thou shalt be called the maker vp of hedges, and the buylder againe of the waye of the Sabboth.

¹⁷ O Lord wherfore hast thou led vs out of thy waye? wherfore hast thou hardened our hertes, that we feare the not? Be at one with vs agayne, for thy seruauntes sake that are of the generacion of thine heretage.

² And shalt sweare: The Lorde liueth: in truthe, in equyte and ryghteousnesse: and al people shalbe fortunable and ioyful in him.

¹² Go to my place in Silah, wherevnto I gaue my name afore tyme, & loke wel what I did to the same place for the wyckednes of my people of Israell.

¹ O Lorde, thou art more rightuous then that I shulde dyspute with the: Neuertheles, lett me talke wyth the in thynges resonable. How happeneth it, that the waye of the vngodlye is so prosperous: and that it goeth so well with them, which (without eny shame) offende and lyue in wyckednesse?

¹³ Then shall the mayde reioyce in the daunce yea both yonge and olde folkes. For I wyll turne theyr sorowe into gladnesse, and wyll comforte them, and make them ioyfull, euen from theyr hertes.

¹⁰ Cursed be he that doth the worcke of the Lorde negligentlye, and cursed be he that kepeth backe hys swearde from sheddynge of bloude.

¹⁵ I wyll go, and returne to my place, tyll they waxe faynt and seke my.

⁸ What greate thinges haue I geuen the, O Ephraim? how faythfully haue I defended the, O Israel? haue I dealt wt the as with Adama? or haue I entreated the lyke Seboim? No, my herte is otherwyse minded. Yea, my mercye is to feruent:

¹ O wo vnto them, that Imagyn to do harme, & deuyse vngracyousnesse vpon their beddes, to perfourme it in the cleare daye: for there power is agaynst God. ² When they couet to haue lande, they take it by vyolence, they robbe men of their houses. Thus they oppresse a man for his house, & euery man for hys heretage.

¹⁷ Beware of men, for they shall delyuer you vp to the counsels, and shall stourge you in their synagoges.

²³ And he sware to her, whatsoeuer thou shalt axe of me, I wil geue it the, euen vnto the halfe of my kyngdome.

⁶ But at the first creacion God made them man and woman. ⁷ And for this thinges seke shall man leaue his father and mother, & byde by hys wyfe, ⁸ and they twayne shall be one fleshe. So then are they nowe not twayne but one fleshe.

⁵ Into whatsoeuer house ye enter, fyrste saye: Peace be to thys house.

²⁵ But fyrste muste he suffer manye thynges, and be refused of thys nacyon.

⁴¹ And when he was come neare, he behelde the citie, and wept on it, ⁴² saiyng: Yf thou haddest knowen those thynges which belong vnto thy peace, euen at thys thy tyme. But now are they hydde from thyne eyes.

¹ After that there was a feast of the Iewes and Iesus went vp to Ierusalem.

² The Iewes tabernacle feaste was at hande.

Thou therfore receyue hym, that is to say, myne owne bowels
