³⁴ Ryghtuousnes setteth vp the people, vut wickednes bringeth folke to destruccyon.

⁶ Kepe them therefore and do them for that is your wysdome and vnderstandyng in the syght of the nations, whych when they haue hearde all these ordinaunces, shall saye: O what a wyse and vnderstaudynge people is thys greate nation. ⁷ For what nation is so great that hath Goddes so nye vnto him as the Lorde oure God is nye vnto vs, in all thynges, when we cal vnto him? ⁸ Yea, & what nation is so greate that hathe ordinaunces, and lawes so ryghtuouse, as all thys lawe which I set before you thys day.

¹ If thou shalt herken dilygently vnto the voyce of the Lorde thy God, to obserue and to do al hys commaundementes which I commaunde the thys day. The Lord wyl set the vp on hye aboue all nacions of the erth. ² And al these blessinges shal come on the and ouertake the, yf thou shalt herken vnto the voyce of the Lorde thy God. ³ Blessed shalt thou be in the towne and blessed in the feldes, ⁴ blessed shalbe the frute of thy body, the frute of thy grounde and the frute of thy catell, the frute of thyne oxen, and thy flockes of shepe, ⁵ blessed shall thyne aulmery be and thy store. ⁶ Blessed shalt thou be, both when thou goest out, and blessed when thou comest in. ⁷ The Lord shal smyte thyne enemyes that ryse agaynst the before thy face. They shall come out agaynst the one way, & flee before the .vij. wayes. ⁸ The Lord shall commaunde the blessynge to be wyth the in thy store houses & in al that thou settest thyne hande to, and wyll blesse the in the lande whyche the Lorde thy God geueth the. ⁹ The Lord shall make the an holy people vnto him self, as he hath sworne vnto the: yf thou shalt kepe the commandementes of the Lord thy God and walke in his wayes. ¹⁰ And al nacions of the erth shall se that thou arte called after the name of the Lorde, and they shalbe aferde of the. ¹¹ And the Lord shal make the plentuous in goodes, in the frute of thy body, in the frute of thy catell and in the frute of thy grounde, in the land whych the Lord sware vnto thy fathers to geue the. ¹² The Lord shall open vnto the hys good treasure, euen the heauen, to geue rayne vnto thy lande in due ceason and to blesse al the laboures of thyne hande. And thou shalt lende vnto many nacions, but shalt not nede to borowe thy selfe. ¹³ And the Lord shall set the before and not behynde, & thou shalt be aboue only and not beneth: yf that thou herken vnto the commaundementes of the Lorde thy God which I commaunde the this day to kepe and to do them. ¹⁴ And se that thou bowe not from any of these wordes which I commaunde the this daye ether to the ryght hande or to the lefte, that thou woldest goo after straunge goddes to serue them. ¹⁵ But and yf thou wilt not herken vnto the voice of the Lord thy God to kepe and to do al his commaundementes and ordinaunces which I commaunde the thys day: then all these curses shall come vpon the & ouertake the: ¹⁶ Cursed shalt thou be in the towne, & cursed in the felde, ¹⁷ cursed shall thyne aulmery be & thy store. ¹⁸ Cursed shal the frute of thy body & the frute of thy lande be & the frute of thyne oxen & the flockes of thy shepe. ¹⁹ And cursed shalt thou be when thou goest in, & when thou goest out. ²⁰ And the Lorde shall sende vpon the cursynge, goyinge to nought & complanynge in all that thou settest thyne hande to whatsoeuer thou doest: vntyl thou be destroyed & brought to nought quyckely, because of the wickednesse of thyne inuencions in that thou hast forsaken the Lorde. ²¹ And the Lorde shall make the pestilence cleaue vnto the, vntyll he haue consumed the from the land whether thou goest to enioye it. ²² And the Lord shall smyte the with swellynge, with feuers, heet, bunrynge, wetherynge, with smytynge and blastynge. ¹⁸ Lest there be among you man or woman kynred or trybe, that turneth away in hys hert thys day from the Lord our God, to go and serue the goddes of these nacions: & lest there be amonge you some roote that beareth gall and wormwod, ¹⁹ so that when he heareth the wordes of this curse, he blesse him self in his hert saying: I shall haue peace. I wyll therfore worke after the luste of myne owne hert, that the droncken may perysh with the thyrstye. ²⁰ And so the Lorde wyll not be mercyfull vnto hym, but then the wrath of the lord & his gelousye, smoke agaynst that man, & al the curses that are written in thys boke lyght vpon hym, and the Lorde do out hys name from vnder heauen, ²¹ and separate hym vnto euell out of all the trybes of Israell accordyng vnto al the curses of the appoyntement that is written in the boke of this lawe. ²² So that the generacion to come of youre chyldren that shall ryse vp after you and the straunger that shal come from a ferre land, say when they se the plages of that lande, & the diseases wherwith the Lord hath smytten it ²³ how all the land is burnt vp wyth bremstone & salt, & that it is nether sowne nor beareth, nor any grasse groweth therin, after the ouerthrowing of Sodome, Gomor, Adama and Zeboim: which the Lord ouerthrewe in his wrath and angre. ²⁴ And then shal al nacions also say: wherfore hath the Lorde done of this facion vnto this lande? O how fearse is this great wrath? ²⁵ And men shal saye: because they lefte the testament of the Lorde God of their fathers which he made with them, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went & serued straunge goddes & worshipped them: goddes which they knew not and which had geuen them nought. ²⁷ And therfore the wrath of the Lorde waxed whote vpon that lande to bryng vpon it all the curses that are written in this boke. ²⁸ And the Lorde cast them out of their lande in angre, wrath and greate furyousnesse, and cast them in to a straunge land, as it is come to passe this day.

³⁴ A frutefull lande maketh he baren, for the wickednesse of them that dwell therin.

² Go thy waye, crye in the eares of Ierusalem, and saye: Thus sayeth the Lorde: I remembre the for the kindnesse of thy youth, and because of thy stedfast loue: in that thou folowdest me thorowe the wildernesse, in an vntilled lande. ³ Thou Israel wast halowed vnto the Lorde, and so was his fyrst frutes. Al they that deuoured Israel, offended: mysfortune fell vpon them, sayeth the Lorde. ⁴ Heare therfore the worde of the Lorde, O thou house of Iacob, and al the generacion of the house of Israell. ⁵ Thus sayeth the Lorde vnto you. What vnfaythfulnesse founde youre fathers in me, that they wente so farre awaye from me, fallinge to lightnesse, and beynge so vaine? ⁶ They thought not in their hertes: Where haue we left the Lorde, that broughte vs oute of the lande of Egipte, that led vs thorowe the wildernesse, thorow a desert and roughe lande, thorow a drye and deadly land yea a lande that no man had gone thorowe, and wherin noman had dwelt. ⁷ And when I had brought you into a plasaunt welbuilded lande, that ye might enioye the frutes and all the commodities of the same: ye went forth, and defyled my lande, and brought myne heretage to abhomynacion. ⁸ The pryestes them selues sayde not once: where is the Lorde? They that haue the lawe in their handes, knowe me not. The sheperdes offende against me. To drincke water of the floud? ¹⁹ Thyne owne wickednesse shall reproue the, and thy turnynge awaye shal condemne the: that thou maiest know and vnderstand, how euyl and hurtful a thinge it is, that thou hast forsaken thy Lorde thy God, and not feared him, sayeth the Lorde God of Hostes. ²⁰ I haue euer broken thy yocke of olde, and burste thy bondes: yet sayest thou: I wil nomore serue, but (lyke an harlot) thou runnest aboute vpon all hye hilles, and amonge all grene trees, ²¹ where as I planted the out of noble grapes & good rotes. How art thou turned then into a bitter, vnfrutefull, and straunge grape? ²² Yea, & that so sore: that thoughe thou wasshe the with Nitrus, and make thy self to fauoure with that swete smelling herbe of Borith: yet in my sight thou art stayned with thy wyckednesse, sayeth the Lorde thy God. ²³ Saye not now: I am not vncleane, and I haue not folowed the Goddes. Loke vpon thyne owne wayes in the woddes, valleyes and dennes, so shalt thou knowe, what thou hast done. Thou art lyke a swyft Dromedary, that goeth easely in his waye: ²⁴ and thy wantonnes is like a wilde Asse, that vseth the wildernesse, and that snoffeth and bloweth at his wyll. Who can tame the? All they that seke the, shal not fayle, but finde the in thine owne vnclennes. ²⁵ Thou kepest thy fote from nakednes, and thy throte from thyrste, and thynkest thus in thy selfe: tushe, I will take no sorow, I will loue the straunge Goddes, and hang vpon them.

¹ Agayne, the worde of the Lorde spake vnto me, sayinge: ² Thou sonne of man, shewe the citie of Ierusalem theyr abhominacions ³ & saye: Thus sayth the Lorde God vnto Ierusalem: Thy progeny & kinred came oute of the lande of Canaan, thy father was an Amoryte, thy mother a Cethyte. ⁴ In the daye of thy byrthe, when thou waste borne, the strynge of thy nauel was not cut of: thou wast not bathed in water to make the cleane: Thou wast neyther robbed with salt, nor swedled in cloutes: ⁵ No man regarded the so muche, as to do any of these thinges for the or to shewe the suche fauoure, but thou waste vtterlye cast oute vpon the felde, yea despised wast thou in the daye of thy byrthe. ⁶ Then came I by the, and sawe the troden doune in thyne owne bloude, and sayde vnto the: thou shalte be pourged from thyne owne bloude, from thyne owne bloude (I say) shalt thou be clensed. ⁷ So I planted the, as the blossome of thy felde: thou arte growen vp, and waxen greate: thou haste gotten a maruelous pleasaunt beutie, thy brestes are come vp, thy heare is goodly growen, where as thou wast naked and bare afore. ⁸ Now when I wente by the, & loked vpon the: beholde, thy tyme was come, yea euen the tyme to vowe the. Thou dyddest eate nothynge but symnels, hony and oyle: maruelous goodly wast thou & beutiful, yea euen a very Quene wast thou: ¹⁴ In so muche, that thy beutye was spoken of amonge the Heythen, for thou waste excellent in my beuty, which I put vpon the, sayeth the Lorde God. ¹⁵ But thou haste put confidence in thyne owne beutye, & played the harlot, when thou haddest gotten the a name. Thou haste commytted whordome, wyth all that wente by the, & hast fulfilled theyr desyres: ¹⁶ yea thou hast taken thy garmentes of dyuerse colours, & deckte thyne aulters therwith, where vpon thou myghtest fulfyll thyne whoredome, of suche a fashyon, as neuer was done, nor shalbe. ¹⁷ The goodly ornamentes & Iewels whiche I gaue the of myne owne golde and syluer, hast thou taken, and made the mens ymages thereof, and commytted whordome with al. ¹⁸ Thy garmentes of dyuerse coloures haste thou taken, and deckte them ther wyth: myne oyle and incense hast thou set before them. ¹⁹ My meate whiche I gaue the, as symnels, oyle & honye (to fede the withall) that haste thou set before them, for a swete sauoure. Is this but a smal whordome of thine (thinckest thou) ²¹ that thou slayest my children and geuest them ouer, to be brent vnto them? ²² And yet in all thy abhominacyons & whordome, thou hast not remembred the dayes of thy youth, howe naked and bare thou wast at that tyme, and troden doune in thyne owne bloude. ²³ After all these thy wickednesses (wo wo vnto the, sayeth the Lord) ²⁴ thou hast buylded thy stewes and brodel houses in euery place: yea at the heade of euery stret ²⁵ hast thou builded the an aulter. Thou hast made thy beuty to be abhorred, thou hast laied out thy legges to euery one that came by, and multiplyed thine whoredom. ²⁶ Thou hast committed fornicacyon with the Egipcians thy neyghbours whiche had muche flesh, and thus haste thou vsed thyne whoredome, to anger me. ²⁷ Beholde, I will stretch out mine hande ouer the, and will minishe the stoare of fode, & deliuer the ouer into the willes of the Philistines thine enemies, whiche are ashamed of thy abhominable waye. ²⁸ Thou hast plaied the whore also with the Assirians, whyche might not satisfye the: Yea thou haste played the harlot, and not had ynough. ²⁹ Thus hast thou stil committed thy fornicacyon from the lande of Canaan vnto the Caldees, and yet thy lust not satisfyed. ³⁰ How shoulde I circumcyse thine herte (sayeth the Lorde God) seynge thou doest all these thinges, thou precyous whore: ³¹ buyldinge thy stewes at the head of euerye strete, and thy brodell houses in all places? Thou hast not ben as another whore that maketh boost of her winninge, ³² but as a wyfe that breaketh wedlock, and taketh other in steade of her husbande. ³³ Gyftes are geuen to al other whores, but thou geuest rewardes vnto all thy louers: and offrest them gyftes, to come vnto the out of all places, and to committe fornicacyon wt the. ³⁴ It is come to passe wyth the in thy whordomes contrarye to the vse of other women, yea there had no such fornicacion bene committed after the, seyng that thou proferest gyftes vnto other, and no rewarde is geuen the: thys is a contrarie thing. ³⁵ Therfore heare the worde of the Lorde O thou harlot: ³⁶ thus sayeth the Lorde God: For so much as thou hast spent thy moneye, and discouered thy shame, thorow thy whordome wyth all thy louers, and wyth all the Idols of thy abhominacions in the bloude of thy children, whom thou hast geuen them: ³⁷ Beholde therfore, I wyll gather together all thy louers, vnto whome thou hast made thy selfe comen: yea and all them whom thou fauourest, and euery one that thou hatest: and wil discouer thy shame before them, that they al maye se thy fylthines. ³⁸ Moreouer, I will iudge the as a breaker of wedlocke and a murtherer, & recompence the thyne owne bloud in wrath and gelousy. ³⁹ I will geue the ouer into their power, that shal breake doune thy stewes, and destroye thy brodel houses, they shall stryppe the oute of thy clothes, al thy fayre and beutyfull Iewels shall they take from the, and so let the syt naked and bare: ⁴⁰ yea they shal bryng the comen people vpon the, whiche shall stone the, and slaye the doune with their sweardes. ⁴¹ They shall burne vp thy houses, & punish the in the syght of manye wemen. Thus wyll I make thy whordome to ceasse, so that thou shalt geue out no mo rewardes. ⁴² Shoulde I make my wrath to be styl, take my gelousy from the, be content, and no more to be displeased? ⁴³ seynge thou remembrest not the dayes of thy youth, but haste prouoked me to wrath in all these thinges? Behold therfore, I wyll brynge thyne owne wayes vpon thyne heade, sayeth the Lorde God: howe be it, I neuer dyd vnto the, accordynge to thy wyckednesse and all thy abhominacions. ⁴⁴ Beholde, al they that vse comen prouerbes, shall vse this prouerbe also against the: suche a mother, suche a doughter. ⁴⁵ Thou art euen thy mothers owne doughter, that hast cast of her housbande & their children. Yea, thou art the syster of thy systers, whiche forsoke their husbandes and their children. Youre mother is a Cethite, and youre father an Amorite. ⁴⁶ Thyne eldest syster is Samaria, she and her doughters that dwel vpon thy left hande. But thy youngest syster that dwelleth on thy ryght hand, is Sodoma & her doughters. ⁴⁷ Yet hast thou not walked after their wayes, nor done after their abhomynacyons: but in all thy wayes thou hast bene more corrupte then they. ⁴⁸ As truly as I lyue, sayeth the lorde God: Sodoma thy sister with her doughters hath not done so euyl, as thou and thy doughters. ⁴⁹ Beholde, the sinnes of thy sister Sodoma were these: Pryde, fulnesse of meate, aboundaunce and Idelnesse: these thynges had she and her doughters. Besydes that, they reached not their hande to the pore and nedy, ⁵⁰ but were proude, and dyd abhomynable thinges before me: therfore I toke them awaye, when I had sene it. ⁵¹ Neyther had Samaria done halfe of thy synnes, yea thou haste exceaded them in wyckednesse. In so muche that in comparyson of all the abhomynacions whyche thou haste done, thou haste made thy systers good wemen. ^{52 53} As for their captyuite, namely the captyuite of Sodoma and her doughters: the captiuyte of Samaria and her doughters. I wyll brynge them agayne, so wyl I also brynge agayne thy captiuite amonge them: ⁵⁴ that thou mayest take thyne owne confusion vpon the, and be ashamed of all that thou hast done, & to comforte them. ⁵⁵ Thus thy sisters (namelye) Sodoma and her doughters: Samaria and her doughters with thy selfe and thy doughters, shalbe brought agayne to youre olde estate. ⁵⁶ When thou wast in thy pryde, ⁵⁷ and before the wyckednes came to lyght, thou wouldest not heare speake of thy sister Sodoma, vntill the tyme that the Sirians with all their townes, and the Philistines with all that lye rounde aboute them, brought the to shame & confusyon: ⁵⁸ that thou myghtest beare thyne owne fylthines and abhomynacyon, sayeth the Lorde. ⁵⁹ For thus sayeth the Lorde God: I shoulde (by ryght) deale with the, as thou hast done. Thou hast despysed the ooth, and broken the couenaunte. ⁶⁰ Neuerthelesse, I wyll remembre the couenaunte, that I made wyth the in thy youth, in so much that it shalbe an euerlastinge couenaunt: ⁶¹ so that thou also remembre thy wayes, & be ashamed of them: then shalte thou receyue of me thy elder and younger sisters, whome I will make thy doughters, and that besyde thy couenaunt. ⁶² And so will I renue my couenaunt with the, that thou mayest know that I am the Lorde: ⁶³ that thou mayest thyncke vpon it, be ashamed, and excuse thine owne confusyon no more: when I haue forgeuen the, all that thou hast done, sayeth the Lorde God.

¹ Moreouer, the worde of the lord came vnto me, & sayd: ² thou sonne of man, wilt thou not reproue his bluodthursty citye? Shewe hem their abhomynacions, ³ and tell them: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: O thou cyty, that sheddest bloude in the middest of the, that thy tyme may come also: & makest the Idoles to defyle the withall. ⁴ Thou haste made thy selfe gyltye, in the bloud that thou hast shed: & defyled the in the Idoles, whiche thou hast made. Thou hast caused thy dayes to drawe nye, & made the tyme of thy yeares to come. Therfore wyll I make the to be confounded among the Heathen, & to be despysed in all the landes, ⁵ whether they be nye or farre from the: they shal laugh the to scorne, thou that hast gotten the so foule a name, & art full of myschefe. ⁶ Beholde, the rulers of Israel haue brought euery man his power, to shed bloud in the. ⁷ In the haue they dispysed father & mother, in the haue they oppressed the straunger, in the haue they vexed the widdowe and the fatherlesse. ⁸ Thou haste despysed my Sanctuarye, and vnhalowed my Sabboth. ⁹ Murtherers are there in the, that shede bloude, & eate vpon the hylles, and in the they vse vnhappynesse. ¹⁰ In the haue they discouered their fathers shame, in the haue they vexed wemen in their sicknesse. ¹¹ Euery man hath dealte shamefully wyth hys neyghboures wyfe, and abhomynably defiled his doughter in law. In the hath euery man forced his owne syster, euen his fathers doughter: ¹² yea gyftes haue bene receyued in the, to shede bloude. Thou haste taken vsury and encreace, thou haste oppressed thy neyghbours by extorcion, and forgotten me, sayeth the Lorde God. ¹³ Beholde, I haue smitten my handes vpon thy couetousnesse, that thou hast vsed, and vpon the bloude whyche hath bene shed in the. ¹⁴ Is thy herte able to endure it, or may thy handes defende them selues in the tyme that I shall brynge vpon the? Euen I the Lorde that speake it, will brynge it also to passe. ¹⁵ I will scatre the amonge the Heathen, and strow the aboute in the landes, & wil cause thy filthinesse to ceasse oute of the: ¹⁶ yea and I will haue the possession in the sight of the Heathen, that thou mayest know, that I am the Lorde. ¹⁷ And the worde of the Lorde came vnto me sayinge: ¹⁸ Thou sonne of man, the house of Israel is turned to drosse. Al they that shoulde be brasse, tynne, yron and leade, are in the fire become drosse. ¹⁹ Therfore, thus sayeth the lord God: For so muche as ye all are turned into drosse, beholde, I wyl bringe you together vnto Ierusalem, ²⁰ lyke as syluer, brasse, yron, tynne and leade are put together in the fornace, and the fyre blowen there vnder to melt them. Euen so wil I gather you, put you in together, and melt you in my wrath and indignacyon. ²¹ I will bringe you together, and kindle the fyre of my cruel displeasure vnder you, that ye may be melted therin. ²² Lyke as the syluer is melted in the fyre, so shal ye also be melted therin, that ye may know, how that I the Lord haue poured my wrath vpon you. ²³ And the worde of the Lorde came vnto me sayinge:
