¹ Then Noemi her mother in law sayd vnto her: my doughter I wil seke reast for the, that thou maieste be in better case. ² For now this Booz oure kynsman with whose maydens thou waste, wenoweth his barley to nyght in the thresshinge floure, ³ washe thy selfe therfore & anoynte the, & put thy rayment vpon the, and get the to the tresshinge floure. But let not the man beware of the, vntil he haue left eatyng and drinckyng. ⁴ And when he goeth to slepe, marcke the place where he layeth him doune, and then go and lyfte vp the clothes that are on his fete, and laye the doune, and so shall he tell the what thou shalt do. ⁵ And she answered her: al that thou byddest me I wyl do. ⁶ And she went vnto the floure, and dyd accordynge to al that her mother in lawe bade her. ⁷ And when Booz had eaten and droncken, and made hym merye, he went and lay doune by the syde of the heape. And she came softlye, and lyfte vp the clothes of hys fete, and layde her doune. ⁸ And at mydnyght the man was afrayd and groped. And beholde, a woman laye at his fete. ⁹ Then he sayde: what art thou? and she answered, I am Ruth thyne handmayde, sprede thy mantell ouer thyne handmayde, for thou art the next of the kynne. ¹⁰ And then he sayde: blessed be thou in the Lorde my doughter, for thou haste shewed more goodnesse in the later end, then at the beginning, in as much as thou folowedeste not young men, whether they were poore or riche. ¹¹ And now my doughter, feare not, I wyl do to the al that thou requireste, for al the gates of my people knowe that thou art a woman of vertue. ¹² And is true that I am of thy nexte kynne: how be it, there is one nyer then I. ¹³ Tary al nyght. And when mornynge is come yf he wyll marye the: it is good, so let hym do. But and yf he wyl not haue the as sure as the Lord liueth, I wil haue the, lye still vntyll the morning. And so she laye at his fete vntil the morninge. ¹⁴ And she arose vp before one could knowe another. And he said: let no man beware, that there came any woman into the thresshing floure. ¹⁵ And he sayd: bring thy mantel that thou hast vpon the & behold it vp. And she helde it vp. And he mette in syxe measures of Barleye and laied it on her. And she gat her into the cytye: ¹⁶ & she came into her mother in lawe, which sayde: what tidinges my doughter? And she tolde her all that the man had done to her. ¹⁷ And saide therto, these syxe measures of barlye gaue he me and sayde: thou shalt not go emptye vnto thy mother in law. ¹⁸ Then sayde she: my doughter syt still, vntyll thou knowe howe the matter wyll chaunse. For the man wil not be in reast vntil he haue fynished the matter this same daye.

¹⁴ But thynke on me wyth the, when thou art in good case, and shewe mercy vnto me. And make mencion of me to Pharao, & helpe to brynge me oute of thys house:

⁴⁰ kepe therefore hys ordinaunces, & his commaundementes which I commaund the this day, that it may go wel with the & with thy children after the, & that thou maist prolong thi dayes vpon the earth which the Lord thy God geueth the thy lyfe long.

⁹ And the Lord geue you, that you maye fynde reast ether of you in the house of her husband: & so she kyssed them. Then they cryed & wepte

² For thou shalte eate the laboures of thyne owne handes: O well is the, happy art thou.

¹⁵ Thinckest thou to raigne, now that thou prouokest me to wrath wyth the Cedre trees? Dyd not thy father eate and drincke, and prospere well, as longe as he dealt wt equite and ryghtuousnesse? ¹⁶ Yee when he helped the oppressed and poore to their ryght then prospered he well. From whence came this, but onlye because he had me before hys eyes, sayth the Lorde.

³⁶ If anye man thinke that it is vncomelye for his virgine if we passe the tyme of mariage, and yf so nede require, let hym do what he listeth, he sinneth not: let them be coupled in mariage.

⁸ Yf there be anye that prouideth not for hys owne, & namely for them of hys housholde the same denyeth the fayth, & is worsse then an infydele.

¹⁴ I wyll therfore that the yonger women marye and beare children, and guyde the house and geue none occasyon to the aduersarye to speake euyll.

⁵ When bethern dwel together and one of them dye and haue no childe, the wyfe of the deed shal not be geuen out vnto a straunger: but hir brother in lawe shal go in vnto her & take her to wife & marie her. ⁶ And the eldeste sonne whych she beareth, shall stande vp in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out in Israel. ⁷ But and if the man wyll not take hys sister in lawe, then let her go to the gate vnto the elders & saye: My brother in lawe refuseth to sterre vp vnto hys brother a name in Israel, he wyl not mary me. ⁸ Then let the elders of his cyty call vnto hym and comen wt him. If he stande & saye: I wyll nat take her, ⁹ then let his syster in lawe go vnto hym in the presence of the elders and loose his shoo of his fote & spit in his face & answere and saye. So shall it be done vnto that man that wyll not byld his brothers house. ¹⁰ And his name shal be called in Israel, the vnshoed house.

¹ And Noemi had a kynsman of her husbandes, a man of mighte, of the kynred of Elimelec, named Booz.

⁸ Then sayd Booz vnto Ruth: hearest thou my doughter, go to no nother felde together, neither go from hence: but abyde by my maidens.

²⁰ Then saide Noemi vnto her doughter in law: blessed be he for he ceaseth not to do the same goodnesse to the dead, that he did to the lyuynge. And Noemi said vnto her: the man is nye vnto vs, euen of our next kinne. ²¹ And Ruth the Moabite said: he bad me also, that I should continew with his young men, vntil they had ended al the heruest he hath. ²² Then said Noemi vnto Ruth her doughter in law, it is best my doughter that thou go oute wyth his maiden, and that no no man mete the in any other felde. ²³ And so she kept her by the maydens of Booz, together vnto the ende of barley haruest & of whete heruest also: and dwelt with her mother in law.

¹¹ For he that sanctifieth, and they which are sanctified, are all of one: For whiche causes sake, he is not ashamed to cal them brethren ¹² sayinge: I wyll declare thy name vnto my brethren and in the middes of the congregacion wil I praise the. ¹³ And again: I wil put my truste in him. And agayne: beholde here am I and the chyldren, which God hath geuen me. ¹⁴ For as muche then as the children were partetakers of fleshe and bloude, he also him selfe lyke wyse toke part wyth them, for to put doune thorowe death, that is to saye the deuyll,

⁹ Lykewyse also the women that they araye them selues in comlye apparell wyth shamefastnes and discrete behauyoure not wyth broyded heare other golde, or pearles, or costlye araye: ¹⁰ but wyth suche as becommeth women that professe the worshyppyng of God thorowe good workes.

²² Absteyne from all suspicious thinges.

¹ Chyldren obeye youre fathers and mothers in the Lorde: for so is it ryght.

²⁰ Chyldren obey your fathers & mothers in all thinges, for that is wel pleasynge vnto the Lorde.

¹² Honour thy father & thy mother, that thy dayes may be longe in the lande which the Lorde thy God geueth the.

⁸ My sonne, heare thy fathers doctryne, & forsake not the lawe of thy mother:

⁵ His mother sayd vnto the mynisters: whatsoeuer he saith vnto you, do it.

¹⁴ Ye are my frendes, yf ye do whatsoeuer I commaunde you.

³⁴ And thei brought rewardes vnto them from before hym: but Beniamins parte was fyue tymes so moche as any of theyrs. And they eate and dronke, and were dronke with hym.

²⁴ Is it not better then, for a man to eat & drinke, and his soule to be mery in his labour? Yea I sawe that thys also was a gyfte of God:

¹² So I perceiued, that in these thinges their is nothinge better for a man, then to be mery and to do wel so long as he liueth. ¹³ For al that a man eateth & drinketh, yea whatsoeuer a man enioyeth of al his labour, the same is a gyfte of God.

¹⁵ Therfore I commaunde gladnesse, because a man hath no better thynge vnder the Sonne, then to eate and dryncke, and to be mery: for that shal he haue of his laboure al the dayes of hys lyfe, whych God geueth hym vnder the Sonne.

⁷ Go thou thy waye then, eate thy bread wyth ioy, and dryncke thy wyne wyth gladnesse, for thy worckes please God.

¹⁹ Meate maketh men to laugh, and wine maketh them mery: but vnto money are all thynges obedyente.

³¹ Whether therfore ye eate or drynke, or whatsoeuer ye do, do al to the praise of God.

¹⁸ and be not drounke wt wyne. wherin is excesse, but be fulfylled wyth the spirite,

¹⁰ Then she fell on her face, and bowed her selfe to the grounde and sayde vnto him: howe is it that I haue founde grace in thyne eyes, to know me, seyng: I am an alyaunt. ¹¹ And Booz answered and sayd vnto her: al is tolde me, that thou hast done vnto thy mother in lawe sence the death of thine husband, howe thou haste lefte thy father and thy mother, and the lande where thou wast borne, & art come vnto a nacion, which thou kneweste not in time passed. ¹² The Lord quite thy worck, & a full reward be geuen the of the Lord God of Israel vnto whom thou art come, to truste vnder hys winges. ¹³ Then she sayd vnto him: let me finde fauoure in thy sighte my Lorde, for thou hast comforted me, & hast spoken hertely vnto thy maide, which yet can not be like vnto one of thy maides.

²⁰ Then saide Noemi vnto her doughter in law: blessed be he for he ceaseth not to do the same goodnesse to the dead, that he did to the lyuynge. And Noemi said vnto her: the man is nye vnto vs, euen of our next kinne.

¹¹ For whosoeuer exalteth him selfe, shalbe broughte lowe. And he that humbleth him selfe, shalbe exalted.

⁸ Noemi sayd vnto her two doughters in lawe: go and returne eche of you vnto youre mothers house: the Lorde deale as kyndlye wyth you, as ye haue dealt wt the dead & with me.

⁴ And beholde, Booz came from Bethlehem, and sayde vnto the harueste men: the Lorde be wyth you. And they answered him, the Lord blesse the.

⁴ Loue suffreth longe, and is curteous. Loue enuieth not. Loue doth not frowardelye, swelleth not, dealeth not dishonestlye, ⁵ seketh not her owne, is not prouoketh to anger, thinketh not euil,

⁴ A stedfast woman is a croune vnto her husband: but she that behaueth her selfe vnhonestly is a corrupcion in hys bones.

¹⁰ Aleph. Who so fyndeth an honest faythfull woman, she is much more worth then pearles.

²⁹ Res. Many daughters there be that gather riches together, but thou goest aboue them all. ³⁰ Sin. As for fauour, it is disceatfull, & beuty is a vayne thing: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she is worthy to be praysed. ³¹ Thau. Geue her of the frute of her handes, & let her owne workes prayse her in the gates.

¹ Then went Booz vnto the gate and sat him doune there: and beholde, the kinsman of which Booz spake, came by. Vnto whom he sayde: come and sytte doune here, and called him by his name. And he turned in and sat doune.

¹² Therfore whatsoeuer ye woulde that men shoulde do to you, euen so do ye to them. Thys is the lawe and the Prophetes.

⁵ Then sayde Booz, what daye thou byeste the feld of the hand of Noemi, thou must take also Ruth the Moabyte the wyfe of the death to stere vp the name of the deed vpon his enheritaunce.

² And shalt sweare: The Lorde liueth: in truthe, in equyte and ryghteousnesse: and al people shalbe fortunable and ioyful in him.

²⁴ saying: Mayster, Moyses bad, yf a man dye hauyng no chyldren, that the brother marye hys wyfe, and reyse vp seed vnto hys brother. ²⁵ There were with vs seuen brethren, and the fyrst maryed and dyseased without yssue and left hys wyfe vnto his brother. ²⁶ Like wyse the second and the thyrde vnto the seuenth. ²⁷ Last of all the woman dyed also.

²³ I call God for a recorde vnto my soule that for to fauer you withall I came not anye more to Corinthum.

¹⁶ Men verelye sweare by hym that is greater then them selues, & an othe to confyrme the thynge, is amonge them an ende of all stryfe.

¹ A good name is more worth then a precious oyntemente, and the day of death is better then the daye of byrthe.

¹⁷ Recompence to no man euyll for euyll. Prouyde afore hande thynges honest in the syght of all men.

¹⁶ Cause not youre treasure to be euyll spoken of.

³² See that ye geue occasion of euil, neither to the Iewes, nor yet to the Gentiles, neither to the congregation of God:

²¹ and therfore make prouision for honest thynges, not in the syghte of God onelye, but also in the syght of men.

¹² and se that ye haue honest conuersacyon amonge the Gentyls, that they whiche backbyte you as euyll doars, maye se youre good workes and prayse God in the daye of visitacyon.

⁸ But the lyberall person ymagyneth honest thynges, and commeth vp with honestye.

¹⁰ Whyle we haue therfore tyme, let vs do good vnto all men, and specially vnto them which are of the houshold of faythe.

³ Put thou thy trust in the Lorde, and be doyng good: so shalt thou dwel in the lande, & verely it shall fede the. ⁴ Delyte thou in the Lorde, & he shall geue the thy hertes desire. ⁵ Committe thy waye vnto the Lorde, sette thy hope in hym, and he shall brynge it too passe.

¹⁶ Therfore sayth the Lorde God: Beholde, I wyll laye a stone in Syon a great stone, a costly corner stone for a sure foundacyon: that who so putteth hys truste in hym, shall not be confounded.

⁷ For the Egipcians helpe shalbe but vayne and lost. Therfore I tolde you also, that your pryde shulde haue an end.
