¹ Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. ² Jonathan told David, saying, "Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, please take care of yourself in the morning, and keep hidden in a secret place. ³ I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will talk with my father about you; and if I see anything, I will tell you." ⁴ Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, "Do not let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you; ⁵ for he put his life in his hand, and struck the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?" ⁶ Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan: and Saul swore, "As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death." ⁷ Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as before. ⁸ There was war again. David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and killed them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him. ⁹ An evil spirit from the LORD was on Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing with his hand. ¹⁰ Saul sought to pin David even to the wall with the spear; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he stuck the spear into the wall. David fled, and escaped that night. ¹¹ Saul sent messengers to David's house, to watch him, and to kill him in the morning. Mikal, David's wife, told him, saying, "If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed." ¹² So Mikal let David down through the window. He went, fled, and escaped. ¹³ Mikal took the teraphim, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head, and covered it with the clothes. ¹⁴ When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, "He is sick." ¹⁵ Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him." ¹⁶ When the messengers came in, look, the teraphim was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head. ¹⁷ Saul said to Mikal, "Why have you deceived me thus, and let my enemy go, so that he is escaped?" Mikal answered Saul, "He said to me, 'Let me go. Why should I kill you?'" ¹⁸ Now David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived in the dwellings. ¹⁹ And it was told to Saul, saying, "Look, David is in the dwellings at Ramah." ²⁰ And Saul sent messengers to capture David. But when they saw a company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. ²¹ When it was told to Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. ²² And Saul became very angry, and he himself also went to Ramah, and came to the cistern of the threshing floor that is on the bare hill. And he asked, "Where are Samuel and David?" And one said, "Look, they are in the dwellings at Ramah." ²³ So he went there to the dwellings at Ramah. Then the Spirit of God came on him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to the dwellings in Ramah. ²⁴ He also stripped off his clothes, and he also prophesied before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

²² Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not tell you, saying, 'Do not sin against the boy,' but you wouldnʼt listen? Therefore, look, now comes a reckoning for his blood."

²⁵ If one man sins against another, he shall appeal to the LORD; but if a man sins against the LORD, who shall entreat for him?" But, they did not listen to the voice of their father, because the LORD intended to kill them.

³² But Jonathan answered Saul, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?"

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, "Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and a commander over your bodyguard, and honored in your house?

²² "If a man sins against his neighbor and obliges him to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before your altar in this house;

¹² They reward me evil for good, to the bereaving of my soul.

⁴ In return for my love, they are my adversaries; but I am in prayer. ⁵ They have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

¹³ Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

¹¹ Rescue those who are being led away to death. Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter. ¹² If you say, "Look, we did not know this;" doesn't he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn't he know it? ⁸ Open your mouth for the mute, in the cause of all who are left desolate. ⁹ Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy."

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

³ When I saw that you did not save me, I put my life in my own hands, and passed over against the people of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?"

¹³ Saul said, "There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today the LORD has worked deliverance in Israel."

⁴⁵ The people said to Saul, "Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it. As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day." So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

⁴⁹ David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. ⁵¹ Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head therewith. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² The men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued them as far as Gath, and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron. ⁵³ The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

²¹ The woman came to Saul, and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, "Look, your handmaid has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me.

¹⁴ And he took his stand in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great victory.

³ Yes, no one who waits for you shall be shamed. They shall be shamed who deal treacherously without cause.

⁴ Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I did not take away.

¹⁰⁹ My soul is continually in my hand, yet I won't forget your Law.

¹⁵ Only know for certain that, if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants; for of a truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."

¹³ Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

² In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. The LORD your God said to you, 'You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall rule over my people Israel.'"

³³ For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is made ready. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. The LORD's breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

³² the God who girds me with strength, and makes my way blameless? ³³ He makes my feet like deer's feet, and sets me on my high places. ³⁴ He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms bend a bow of bronze. ³⁵ You have also given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand holds me up, and your help has made me great. ³⁶ You have enlarged my steps under me, My feet have not slipped. ³⁷ I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and I did not turn back until they were destroyed. ³⁸ I struck them through, so that they did not rise. They fell beneath my feet. ³⁹ For you have equipped me with strength for the battle. You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. ⁴⁰ You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, that I might cut off those who hate me. ⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save; even to the LORD, but he did not answer them. ⁴² Then I ground them as fine as the dust on the surface of a path. Like the mud in the streets, I trampled them. ⁴³ You have delivered me from the strivings of the people. You have made me the head of the nations. A people whom I have not known shall serve me; ⁴⁴ as soon as they hear of me they obey me. Foreigners come cringing to me; ⁴⁵ they are not bound in chains. ⁴⁶ The LORD lives; and blessed be my rock. Exalted be the God of my salvation, ⁴⁷ even the God who executes vengeance for me, and subdues peoples under me. ⁴⁸ He rescues me from my enemies. Yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me. You deliver me from the violent man. ⁴⁹ Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations, and will sing praises to your name. ⁵⁰ He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed, to David and to his descendants, until forever.

³ Though an army is deployed against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

¹⁴ Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

¹⁶ Let our lord now command your servants who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. It shall happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well, and it will give you relief."

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope at noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of me," says the LORD.

⁴ "Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.

²³ But when they persecute you in one city, flee to the other. And if they persecute you in the other, flee to the next. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

⁴³ But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of the person, passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and does not find it. ⁴⁴ Then he says, 'I will return into my house from which I came out,' and when he has come back, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. ⁴⁵ Then he goes, and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that person becomes worse than the first. Even so will it be also to this evil generation."

³⁰ But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way.

³⁹ Now they sought again to seize him, and he went out of their hand.

²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. ²¹ For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog turns to his own vomit again," and "the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire."

¹⁰ And he went from there to Gibeah, and look, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them.

¹¹ Saul sent messengers to David's house, to watch him, and to kill him in the morning. Mikal, David's wife, told him, saying, "If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed."

²⁸ "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.

⁴⁵ The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" ⁴⁶ The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man." ⁴⁷ The Pharisees therefore answered them, "You are not also led astray, are you? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed." ⁵⁰ Nicodemus (he who came to him before, being one of them) said to them, ⁵¹ "Does our Law judge a man, unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?" ⁵² They answered him, "Are you also from Galilee? Search, and see that no prophet comes from Galilee."

³ But he who prophesies speaks to people for their encouragement, strengthening, and comfort.

²⁴ But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all. ²⁵ And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

⁹ Then the king sent a captain of fifty with his fifty to him. He went up to him; and look, he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, "Man of God, the king has said, 'Come down.'" ¹⁰ Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky, and consume you and your fifty." Fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty. ¹¹ Again he sent to him another captain of fifty and his fifty. And he went up and said to him, "Man of God, the king has said, 'Come down quickly.'" ¹² And Elijah answered and said to him, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky, and consume you and your fifty." The fire of God came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty. ¹³ Again he sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. The third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, and said to him, "Man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty your servants, be precious in your sight.

²² Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with grain, yet his foolishness will not be removed from him.

²³ Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good, who are accustomed to do evil.

⁵ And God put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."

² Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came on him.

²⁰ And Saul sent messengers to capture David. But when they saw a company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

⁹ A man's heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

¹ The king's heart is in the LORD's hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

²² Many will tell me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did not we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?'

⁵¹ Now he did not say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

² If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

⁴ he says, who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of Shaddai, falling down, and having his eyes open:

¹⁰ And he went from there to Gibeah, and look, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them. ¹¹ It happened, when all who knew him before saw that, look, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, "What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?" ¹² One of the same place answered, "Who is their father?" Therefore it became a proverb, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

¹⁴ And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was clothed in a linen ephod.

²⁰ And then David returned to bless his household. Mikal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David. And she greeted him, and said, "How glorious the king of Israel was today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself."

² at that time the LORD spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, "Go, and loosen the sackcloth from off your waist, and take your sandals off your feet." He did so, walking naked and barefoot.

⁸ For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will howl like the jackals, and moan like the daughters of owls.

²¹ All who heard him were amazed, and said, "Is not this he who in Jerusalem made havoc of those who called on this name? And he had come here intending to bring them bound before the chief priests."
