¹ When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I will die."

³¹ The LORD saw that Leah was unloved, so he made her fertile, but Rachel was barren.

¹⁶ Then they set out from Bethel. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel went into labor, and her labor was difficult. ¹⁷ When she was in the difficult labor, the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid, for now you have another son." ¹⁸ It happened, as her life was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-Oni, but his father named him Benjamin. ¹⁹ So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

¹¹ His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept thinking about the matter.

¹⁵ If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and do not let me see my wretchedness."

²⁹ Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them."

⁴ When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: ⁵ but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁶ Her rival taunted her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she taunted her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. ⁸ Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."

¹ After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day. ² Job answered: ³ "Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, 'A man is conceived.'

¹¹ "Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when my mother bore me?

²⁰ "Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul, ²¹ Who long for death, but it doesn't come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures, ²² who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

² For resentment kills the foolish man, and jealousy kills the simple.

¹⁹ Who is he who will contend with me? For then would I hold my peace and give up the spirit.

¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron, the LORD's holy one.

³⁰ The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones.

⁴ Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man's neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁴ Cursed is the day in which I was born: do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying, A boy is born to you; making him very glad. ¹⁶ Let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and did not repent: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime; ¹⁷ because he did not kill me from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. ¹⁸ Why came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

³ he left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.

⁸ For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

³ for you are still fleshly. For insofar as there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and living by human standards?

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death.

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

³ For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not boast and do not lie against the truth.

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit which he made to dwell in us yearns jealously"?
