³¹ Therefore my harp has turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.

¹ By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion. ² On the willows in its midst, we hung up our harps. ³ For there, those who led us captive asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy: "Sing us one of the songs of Zion." ⁴ How can we sing the LORD's song in a foreign land?

⁴ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁴ My heart flutters. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling for me.

¹² In that day the LORD of hosts called for weeping and for mourning, for shaved heads, and for the wearing of sackcloth.

⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tambourines ceases. The sound of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.

¹⁵ The joy of our heart has ceased; our dancing is turned into mourning.

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him. And his sleep fled from him.
