² They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Christ, a king."

¹⁷ It happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"

¹⁰ Set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, 'You cursed God and the king.' Then carry him out, and stone him to death." ¹¹ The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ The two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him. The base fellows testified against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king." Then they carried him out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.

¹¹ Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things that I do not know about.

⁴ They fully intend to throw him down from his lofty place. They delight in lies. They bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

³ who sharpen their tongue like a sword, and aim their arrows, deadly words, ⁴ to shoot innocent men from ambushes. They shoot at him suddenly and fearlessly. ⁵ They encourage themselves in evil plans. They talk about laying snares secretly. They say, "Who will see them?" ⁶ They plot injustice; they hide a well-conceived plan. Surely man's mind and heart are cunning.

¹⁰ For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. "Denounce, and we will denounce him," say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall; "perhaps he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him."

¹³ When he was in the Benjamin Gate, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he laid hold on Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are falling away to the Chaldeans." ¹⁴ Then Jeremiah said, "It is false; I am not falling away to the Chaldeans." But he did not listen to him; so Irijah laid hold on Jeremiah, and brought him to the officials. ¹⁵ And the officials were angry with Jeremiah, and struck him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison.

⁴ Then the officials said to the king, "Please let this man be put to death; because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man doesn't seek the welfare of this people, but the hurt."

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.

⁸ I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.

²⁷ But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that, and give it to them for me and you."

²¹ They said to him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus so they could put him to death; ⁶⁰ and they found none, even though many false witnesses came forward. But afterward two came forward,

¹⁷ And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were utterly amazed at him.

⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death, and found none. ⁵⁶ For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree with each other.

⁶¹ But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" ⁶² And Jesus said, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky."

³ The chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴ Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they testify against you." ⁵ But Jesus made no further answer, and Pilate was amazed.

²⁰ They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor. ²¹ They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and are not partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. ²² Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" ²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, ²⁴ "Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?" They answered, "Caesar's." ²⁵ He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

⁶⁹ From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." ⁷⁰ They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am."

⁵ But they insisted, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place."

¹⁴ and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one that subverts the people, and see, I have examined him before you, and found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him.

³⁰ They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we would not have delivered him up to you."

³³ Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" ³⁴ Jesus answered him, "Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?" ³⁵ Pilate answered, "I'm not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?" ³⁶ Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I would not be delivered to the Jewish leaders. But now my Kingdom is not from here." ³⁷ Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."

¹² At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, saying, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."

²⁰ When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, "These men, being Jews, are agitating our city, ²¹ and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans."

⁶ When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers before the rulers of the city, crying, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here also, ⁷ whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus."

⁵ For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

¹³ Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.

¹⁶ having a good conscience; so that when they speak evil against you, they may be put to shame who slander your good manner of life in Christ. ¹⁷ For it is better, if it is God's will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil. ¹⁸ Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
