¹ And it happened that when Jesus had finished directing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and proclaim in their cities. ² Now when John heard in the prison the works of the Christ, he sent [a message] by his disciples ³ and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" ⁴ And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: ⁵ the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. ⁶ And blessed is he who is not offended by me." ⁷ And as these went their way, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing? Look, those who wear soft things are in kings' houses. ⁹ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. ¹⁰ This is the one of whom it is written, 'Look, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' ¹¹ Truly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. ¹³ For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come. ¹⁵ He who has ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁶ "But to what should I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call to their companions ¹⁷ and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We wailed in mourning, and you did not mourn.' ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' ¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is justified by her children." ²⁰ Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. ²¹ "Woe to you, Chorazin. Woe to you, Bethsaida. For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²² But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. ²³ And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will be brought down to hell. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day. ²⁴ But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you." ²⁵ At that time, Jesus answered, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. ²⁶ Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight. ²⁷ All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him. ²⁸ "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

¹ The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and an opening of the eyes to the blind; ² to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; ³ to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

²³ And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

²⁸ And it happened, when Jesus had finished saying these things, that the crowds were astonished at his teaching,

³⁸ And he said to them, "Let us go somewhere else into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because I came out for this reason." ³⁹ And he went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out demons.

¹⁵ He taught in their synagogues, being praised by all. ¹⁶ He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. ¹⁷ The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written, ¹⁸ "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, ¹⁹ and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." ²⁰ He closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. ²¹ He began to tell them, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

¹ It happened soon afterwards, that he went about through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the Kingdom of God. With him were the twelve,

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and remain in his love.

¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.

² until the day in which he was received up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.

³⁸ even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

⁴² He commanded us to proclaim to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead.

² For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

⁶ Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks in rebellion, and not after the tradition which they received from us.

¹⁰ For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: "If anyone will not work, neither let him eat."

¹⁴ that you keep the commandment without spot, blameless, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ;

¹⁷ So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

¹² Now when he heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee.

¹⁴ Then John's disciples came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?"

³ For Herod had arrested John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her.

¹⁹ but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,

¹⁸ The disciples of John told him about all these things. ¹⁹ John, calling to himself two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" ²⁰ When the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?'" ²¹ In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and to many who were blind he gave sight. ²² Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John the things which you have seen and heard: that the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. ²³ Blessed is he who is not offended by me." ²⁴ When John's messengers had departed, he began to tell the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ²⁵ But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Look, those who are gorgeously dressed, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. ²⁶ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, 'Look, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' ²⁸ "I tell you, among those who are born of women there is none greater than John, yet he who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he." ²⁹ When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John's baptism. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the Law scholars rejected the counsel of God, not being baptized by him themselves. ³¹ "To what then will I liken the people of this generation? What are they like? ³² They are like children who sit in the marketplace, and call one to another, saying, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We mourned, and you did not weep.' ³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' ³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard; a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' ³⁵ Wisdom is justified by all her children."

²⁴ For John was not yet thrown into prison. ²⁵ Now a dispute arose between John's disciples with a Jew about purification. ²⁶ And they came to John, and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, look, he is baptizing, and everyone is coming to him." ²⁷ John answered, "No one can receive anything, unless it has been given to him from heaven. ²⁸ You yourselves bear me witness that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but, 'I have been sent before him.'

¹ Therefore when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard, "Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John"

¹ It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples. ² He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They said to him, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." ³ He said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism."

¹⁵ I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel."

³ And I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and through you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

¹⁰ The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the rulerʼs staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. And it is he whom the peoples will obey.

¹⁷ I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel, and will crush the forehead of Moab, and the crown of all the sons of tumult.

¹⁵ The LORD your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him. ¹⁶ This is according to all that you desired of the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, "Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I not die." ¹⁷ The LORD said to me, "They have well said that which they have spoken. ¹⁸ I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.

⁶ "But I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain." ⁷ I will tell of the decree. The LORD said to me, "You are my son. Today I have become your father. ⁸ Ask of me, and I will give the nations as your inheritance, and the farthest parts of the earth for your possession. ⁹ You shall rule them with an iron scepter. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel." ¹⁰ Now therefore, you kings, be wise; receive correction, you judges of the earth. ¹¹ Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. ¹² Do homage in purity, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, when his anger is suddenly kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

¹ [A Psalm by David.] The LORD says to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." ² The LORD will send forth the rod of your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of your enemies. ³ Your people offer themselves willingly on the day of your power. On the holy mountains at sunrise the dew of your youth will be yours. ⁴ The LORD has sworn, and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek." ⁵ The LORD is at your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of his wrath.

²⁶ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. We have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

¹⁴ Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign. Look, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and they will call his name Immanuel.

⁶ For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders, and his name is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ⁷ Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on the throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

⁵ "Look, the days come," says the LORD, "that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name by which he shall be called: 'The LORD our righteousness.'

²³ I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. ²⁴ I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them;" I, the LORD, have spoken it.

²⁴ Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to put an end to the transgression, and to make an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place. ²⁵ Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem until the time of the Messiah, the Prince, there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks. It shall be built again, with open spaces and a moat, but in times of distress. ²⁶ After the sixty-two weeks the Messiah shall be cut off, and shall have nothing. And the people of a ruler who shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and his end shall come with a flood, and until the end there shall be war; desolations are decreed.

⁵ Afterward the children of Israel shall return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and shall come with trembling to the LORD and to his blessings in the last days.

²⁸ "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. ²⁹ And also on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. ³⁰ And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, fire, and pillars of smoke. ³¹ The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. ³² And it will happen that whoever will call on the name of the LORD shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the remnant, those whom the LORD calls.

¹¹ On that day I will rebuild the tabernacle of David that has fallen, and repair its broken places, and I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it as in the days of old; ¹² that the rest of humanity may seek after the LORD, and all the nations who are called by my name," says the LORD who does this.

²¹ Those who have been saved will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom will be the LORD's.

² But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come forth to me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

¹⁴ Sing, daughter of Zion. Shout, Israel. Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ The LORD has taken away your judgments. He has thrown out your enemy. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in the midst of you. You will not be afraid of evil any more. ¹⁶ In that day, it will be said to Jerusalem, "Do not be afraid, Zion. Do not let your hands be weak." ¹⁷ The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

⁷ and I will shake all nations, and they will come with the treasures of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.

⁹ Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion. Shout, daughter of Jerusalem. Look, your king comes to you. He is righteous, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

¹ "Look, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, look, he comes." says the LORD of hosts.

² But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.

² "Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him." ³ And when King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born. ⁵ And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written through the prophet, ⁶ 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come forth a ruler who will shepherd my people, Israel.'"

⁵ Say to the daughter of Zion, "Look, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

⁹ The crowds who went before him, and who followed kept shouting, "Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest."

⁹ Those who went in front, and those who followed, shouted, "Hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

³⁸ saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest."

²¹ Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, will you worship the Father.

¹⁴ When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, "This is truly the Prophet who comes into the world."

³¹ But many in the crowd believed in him. They said, "When the Christ comes, he won't do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?"

⁴¹ Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "What, does the Christ come out of Galilee? ⁴² Hasn't the Scripture said that the Christ comes of the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"

²⁷ She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who comes into the world."

¹³ they took the branches of the palm trees, and went out to meet him, and were shouting, "Hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel."

¹⁴ He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you.

³⁷ "For in just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.

⁷ It happened, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he tore his clothes, and said, "Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends to me to heal a man of his leprosy? But please consider and see how he seeks a quarrel against me."

¹⁴ Then he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

²⁶ The humble shall eat and be satisfied. They shall praise the LORD who seek after him. Let your hearts live forever.

¹² For he will deliver the needy when he cries; the poor, who has no helper. ¹³ He will have pity on the poor and needy. He will save the souls of the needy.

⁸ The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD raises up those who are bowed down. The LORD loves the righteous.

¹⁸ In that day, the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and the eyes of the blind will see out of obscurity and out of darkness.

⁴ Tell those who have a fearful heart, "Be strong. Do not be afraid. Look, your God will come with vengeance, God's retribution. He will come and save you. ⁵ Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. ⁶ Then the lame man will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing; for waters will break out in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.

⁶ "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and make you a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations; ⁷ to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.

⁸ Bring out the blind people who have eyes, and the deaf who have ears.

² For all these things has my hand made, and so all these things came to be," says the LORD: "but to this man will I look, to him who is humble and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my word.

⁷ So I fed the flock of slaughter, especially the oppressed of the flock. I took for myself two staffs. The one I called "Favor," and the other I called "Union," and I fed the flock.

³ "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

¹ And when he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. ² And look, a leper came to him and worshiped him, saying, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean." ³ And he stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, "I am willing. Be cleansed." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. ⁴ And Jesus said to him, "See that you tell nobody, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

²⁴ he said, "Go away, for the girl is not dead, but asleep." And they laughed at him. ²⁵ But when the crowd was put out, he entered in, took her by the hand, and the girl arose.

³⁰ And their eyes were opened. And Jesus strictly commanded them, saying, "See that no one knows about this."

⁸ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.

³⁰ Large crowds came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, crippled, and many others, and they put them down at his feet; and he healed them. ³¹ So the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, crippled healthy, lame walking, and blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.

¹⁴ The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.

³⁷ They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak."

²⁵ When Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, "You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again."

¹⁴ He came near and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. He said, "Young man, I tell you, arise." ¹⁵ He who was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. ¹⁶ Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us." and, "God has visited his people."

²³ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, after seeing his signs which he did.

² This man came to him at night, and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him."

³⁶ But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.

²⁵ Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, these testify about me.

³⁸ But if I do them, though you do not believe me, believe the works; that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."

⁴³ When he had said this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." ⁴⁴ The man who had died came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me; or else believe because of the works themselves. ¹² Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

²² "Men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as you yourselves know,

² A certain man who was lame from his mother's womb was being carried, whom they put daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask gifts for the needy of those who entered into the temple. ³ Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive gifts for the needy. ⁴ Peter, fastening his eyes on him, with John, said, "Look at us." ⁵ He listened to them, expecting to receive something from them. ⁶ But Peter said, "Silver and gold have I none, but what I have, that I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, get up and walk." ⁷ He took him by the right hand, and raised him up. Immediately his feet and his ankle bones received strength. ⁸ Leaping up, he stood, and began to walk. He entered with them into the temple, walking, leaping, and praising God.

⁹ if we are examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, ¹⁰ be it known to you all, and to all the children of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in him does this man stand here before you whole.

⁸ At Lystra a certain man sat, without strength in his feet, a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked. ⁹ He was listening to Paul speaking, who, fastening eyes on him, and seeing that he had faith to be made whole, ¹⁰ said with a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." He leaped up and walked.

⁵ Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

¹ Blessed is the one who doesn't follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path of sinners, or join in with scoffers. ² But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

¹ [By David. A contemplative psalm.] Happy are those whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. ² Happy is the one to whom the LORD does not charge with sin, in whose spirit there is no deceit.

¹ ALEPH. Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.

¹⁴ And he will be a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock that makes them fall to both the houses of Israel, for a trap and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ Many will stumble over it, fall, be broken, be snared, and be captured."

³ "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. ⁵ Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth. ⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled. ⁷ Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy. ⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. ⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God. ¹⁰ Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ "Blessed are you when they insult you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake. ¹² Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? ⁵⁶ And are not all of his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all of these things?" ⁵⁷ And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house."

¹² Then the disciples came, and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?" ¹³ But he answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. ¹⁴ Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."

⁷ "Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks. For there will always be something to cause people to stumble, but woe to the person through whom the stumbling block comes.

¹⁰ Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another.

³¹ Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

³⁴ and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, "Look, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.

²³ He said to them, "Doubtless you will tell me this parable, 'Physician, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.'" ²⁴ He said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. ²⁵ But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land. ²⁶ Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. ²⁷ There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian." ²⁸ They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things. ²⁹ They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff.

²⁷ It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the crowd lifted up her voice, and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you." ²⁸ But he said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and keep it."

⁶⁰ Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying. Who can listen to it?" ⁶¹ But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, "Does this cause you to stumble?

⁶⁶ At this, many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

³² Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone; ³³ even as it is written, "Look, I am laying in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock to trip over; and the one who believes in him will not be put to shame."

²² For Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to the non-Jews,

¹⁴ Now the natural person does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

¹¹ But I, brothers, if I still proclaim circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been removed.

⁸ and, "a stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over." For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.

⁴ Uncontrolled as the waters, you will not have excel, because you went up to your father's bed, you went up and defiled my couch.

¹ And in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea ² and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." ³ For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one who calls out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his roads straight.'"

⁵ Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him,

²⁵ The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from people?" They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his roads straight.'" ⁴ John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. ⁵ And all the country of Judea went out to him and all those from Jerusalem, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.

³ He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. ⁴ As it is written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his roads straight. ⁵ Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low, and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways smooth. ⁶ And all humanity will see the salvation of God.'" ⁷ He said therefore to the crowds who went out to be baptized by him, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

²⁴ When John's messengers had departed, he began to tell the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ²⁵ But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Look, those who are gorgeously dressed, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. ²⁶ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, 'Look, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' ²⁸ "I tell you, among those who are born of women there is none greater than John, yet he who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he." ²⁹ When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John's baptism. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the Law scholars rejected the counsel of God, not being baptized by him themselves.

¹⁸ So consider carefully how you listen. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever does not have, from him will be taken away even that which he thinks he has."

³⁸ And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?"

³⁵ He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

¹⁷ When I therefore was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the "Yes, yes" and the "No, no?" ¹⁸ But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not "Yes and no."

¹⁴ that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by cleverness in deceitful schemes;

⁶ But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

⁸ They answered him, "He was a hairy man, and wearing a leather belt around his waist." He said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."

² at that time the LORD spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, "Go, and loosen the sackcloth from off your waist, and take your sandals off your feet." He did so, walking naked and barefoot.

⁴ It will happen in that day, that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision, when he prophesies; neither will they wear a hairy mantle to deceive:

⁴ Now John himself wore clothing made of camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

¹¹ Even to this present hour we hunger, thirst, are naked, are beaten, and have no certain dwelling place.

²⁷ in labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, and in cold and nakedness.

³ I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth."

¹³ For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.

⁵ And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd because they regarded him as a prophet.

¹² but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them." ¹³ Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.

²⁴ Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from people?" They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' ²⁶ But if we say, 'From people,' we fear the crowd, for all hold John as a prophet."

¹¹ They asked him, saying, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" ¹² And he said to them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. And why is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be rejected? ¹³ But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him."

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. ¹⁶ He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God. ¹⁷ He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

⁷⁶ And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to make ready his ways,

³ The voice of one who calls out in the wilderness, "Prepare the way of the LORD. Make his roads straight.

⁵ Look, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.

³ For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one who calls out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his roads straight.'"

² As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Look, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.

²⁶ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, 'Look, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

²³ He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as Isaiah the prophet said."

³⁰ "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.' But now the LORD says, 'Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

¹ "Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

⁴ How then can man be just with God? Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?

⁵ Look, I was brought forth in iniquity. In sin my mother conceived me.

²⁶ Moreover the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD binds up the fracture of his people, and heals the wound they were struck with.

⁸ In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He who is feeble among them at that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD before them.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and with fire.

¹⁹ Therefore, whoever will break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever will do and teach them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

²⁸ "I tell you, among those who are born of women there is none greater than John, yet he who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he."

⁴⁸ and said to them, "Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one is great."

¹⁵ John testified about him and shouted out, saying, "This was the one of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.'"

²⁷ He is the one who comes after me, whose sandal strap I'm not worthy to loosen."

³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease.

³⁹ But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁴¹ Many came to him. They said, "John indeed did no sign, but everything that John said about this man is true."

²⁵ Now to him who is able to establish you according to my Good News and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret through long ages, ²⁶ but now is revealed, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, is made known for obedience of faith to all the nations;

⁴ If then, you have to judge things pertaining to this life, do you set them to judge who have no standing in the church?

⁹ For I am the least of the apostles, who is not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

³ among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

⁸ To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to proclaim to the non-Jews the unsearchable riches of Christ,

²⁶ the mystery which has been hidden for ages and generations. But now it has been revealed to his saints, ²⁷ to them God was pleased to make known the glorious riches of this mystery among the non-Jews, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory;

¹⁰ but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News.

⁴⁰ God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

¹⁰ Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,

²³ When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?" ²⁴ Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from people?" They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' ²⁶ But if we say, 'From people,' we fear the crowd, for all hold John as a prophet." ²⁷ They answered Jesus, and said, "We do not know." He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁸ But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, 'Son, go work today in the vineyard.' ²⁹ He answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind, and went. ³⁰ And he came to the other, and said the same thing. And he answered and said, 'I go, sir,' but he did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into the Kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you did not even repent afterward, that you might believe him.

²⁴ "Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in, and will not be able.

¹⁶ The Law and the Prophets were until John. From that time the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.

²⁷ Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him."

¹¹ Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. ¹² For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world's rulers of this darkness, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. ¹³ Therefore, put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.

¹² So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with awe and reverence.

⁶ He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.

¹⁷ "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill. ¹⁸ For truly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will disappear from the Law, until all things are accomplished.

²⁷ Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

⁴⁴ And he said to them, "This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled."

⁴⁶ For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. ⁴⁷ But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

²² For Moses indeed said to the fathers, 'The Lord your God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me. You must listen to him in all things whatever he says to you. ²³ It will be, that every soul that will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.' ²⁴ Yes, and all the prophets from Samuel and those who followed after, as many as have spoken, they also told of these days.

²⁷ For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know him, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.

²¹ But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the Law and the Prophets;

⁵ They, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house), yet shall know that there has been a prophet among them.

¹⁰ Moreover he said to me, "Son of man, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart, and hear with your ears. ¹¹ And go to the exiles, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD'; whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear.

¹⁰ The disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" ¹¹ And he answered and said, "Elijah indeed comes, and will restore all things,

¹² "I have yet many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now.

² I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you weren't yet ready. And even now you are still not ready,

⁴ I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as did not worship the beast nor his image, and did not receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived, and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

⁹ He who has ears, let him hear."

⁴³ Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

⁹ And he said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."

²³ If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."

¹⁵ There is nothing from outside of the person, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the person are what defile the person."

⁸ Other fell into the good ground, and grew, and brought forth fruit one hundred times." As he said these things, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

³⁵ It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

⁷ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.

¹¹ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes won't be harmed by the second death.

¹⁷ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows but he who receives it.

²⁹ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

¹³ What shall I testify of you? What shall I liken to you, daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I compare to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? For your ruin is great like the sea. Who can heal you?

³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

³⁶ Truly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

³⁴ Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished.

³⁰ And he said, "To what will we liken the Kingdom of God? Or with what parable will we use for it?

¹⁸ Then he said, "What is the Kingdom of God like? And to what can I compare it?

⁴⁰ All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth split open at their sound.

⁹ Whom will he teach knowledge? To whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts? ¹⁰ For it is precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little. ¹¹ But he will speak to this nation with stammering lips and a strange language; ¹² to whom he said, "This is the resting place. Give rest to weary;" and "This is the refreshing;" but they would not listen. ¹³ Therefore the word of the LORD will be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, fall backward, be broken, be snared, and be taken.

²⁹ You will have a song, as in the night when a holy feast is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goes with a flute to come to the LORD's mountain, to Israel's Rock.

¹⁷ Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Consider, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the skillful women, that they may come:" ¹⁸ "and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. ¹⁹ For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, 'How are we ruined. We are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.'" ²⁰ "Yet hear the word of the LORD, you women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation.

⁴ Again will I build you, and you shall be built, O virgin of Israel: again you shall be adorned with your tambourines, and shall go forth in the dances of those who make merry.

¹⁵ And Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

²³ And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the flute players, and the crowd in noisy disorder,

²⁵ "Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

¹⁹ For though I was free from all, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more. ²⁰ To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, not being myself under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law; ²¹ to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law. ²² To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I may by all means save some. ²³ Now I do all things for the sake of the Good News, that I may be a joint partaker of it.

¹¹ Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said to him, "Is all well? Why did this mad fellow come to you?" He said to them, "You know the man and what his talk was."

¹⁷ I did not sit in the assembly of those who make merry, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of your hand; for you have filled me with indignation.

⁸ You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and to drink. ⁹ For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Look, I will cause to cease out of this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

²⁶ 'The LORD has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man who is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles.

⁷ The days of visitation have come. The days of reckoning have come. Let Israel know. The prophet is a fool, and the man of the spirit is mad, because of the abundance of your sins, and because your hostility is great.

²⁵ It is enough for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant like his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household.

²⁰ The crowd answered, "You have a demon. Who seeks to kill you?"

⁴⁸ Then the Judeans answered him, "Do not we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"

²⁰ Many of them said, "He has a demon, and is insane. Why do you listen to him?"

²⁴ As he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are crazy. Your great learning is driving you insane."

²⁷ but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

⁵ How great are your works, LORD. Your thoughts are very deep. ⁶ A senseless man doesn't know, neither does a fool understand this:

²⁴ Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander everywhere.

¹⁰ And it happened as he sat in the house, look, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. ¹¹ And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

²⁹ Levi made a great feast for him in his house. There was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them. ³⁰ The Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"

²⁹ When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John's baptism.

³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard; a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' ³⁵ Wisdom is justified by all her children." ³⁶ One of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered into the Pharisee's house, and sat at the table.

¹ And it happened, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.

¹ Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming close to him to hear him. ² The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them."

⁷ And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, "He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner."

² Now Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the wedding.

² So they prepared a dinner for him there; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him. ³ Mary, therefore, took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. ⁴ Then Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, who would betray him, said, ⁵ "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?" ⁶ Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, used to steal what was put into it. ⁷ But Jesus said, "Leave her alone, that she may keep this for the day of my burial. ⁸ For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."

² Let each one of us please his neighbor for that which is good, to be building him up.

²⁴ but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. ²⁵ Because the foolishness of God is wiser than man's, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's. ²⁶ For consider your calling, brothers, that not many were wise from a human perspective, not many mighty, not many of noble birth. ²⁷ But God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise. And God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong. ²⁸ And God chose the lowly of the world, and the despised, what is considered to be nothing, to bring to nothing what is considered to be something, ²⁹ that no flesh might boast before God.

⁸ To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to proclaim to the non-Jews the unsearchable riches of Christ, ⁹ and to bring to light for all what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things; ¹⁰ to the intent that now through the church the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places,

¹¹ I saw, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousands of ten thousands, and thousands of thousands; ¹² saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb who has been killed to receive the power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing." ¹³ I heard every created thing which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them, saying, "To him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb be the blessing, the honor, the glory, and the dominion, forever and ever." ¹⁴ The four living creatures were saying, "Amen." The elders fell down and worshiped.

¹² saying, "Amen. Blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen."

¹¹ But my people did not listen to my voice. Israel desired none of me. ¹² So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels. ¹³ Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways.

² Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for the LORD has spoken: I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. ³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know, my people do not understand. ⁴ Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward. ⁵ Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

⁶ I listened and heard, but they did not speak what is right: no man repents him of his wickedness, saying, "What have I done?" Everyone turns to his course, as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.

¹ Listen now to what the LORD says: "Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear what you have to say. ² Hear, you mountains, the LORD's controversy, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. ³ My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me. ⁴ For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage. I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. ⁵ My people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the LORD."

⁴¹ The people of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and look, something greater than Jonah is here.

¹⁹ And answering, he said to them, "You unbelieving generation, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me."

¹⁴ Afterward he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they were reclining, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

¹³ "Woe to you, Chorazin. Woe to you, Bethsaida. For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. ¹⁵ And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to hell.

²⁰ For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean."

²⁵ in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth, ²⁶ and they may recover themselves out of the devil's snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.

⁵ But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without finding fault; and it will be given to him.

²¹ I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.

²⁰ The rest of humanity, who were not killed with these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they would not worship demons, and the idols of gold, and of silver, and of bronze, and of stone, and of wood; which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk. ²¹ They did not repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

⁹ People were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.

¹¹ and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores. They did not repent of their works.

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

²⁷ I have seen your abominations, even your adulteries, and your neighing, the lewdness of your prostitution, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, Jerusalem. You will not be made clean; how long shall it yet be?'"

⁶ not to many peoples of a strange speech and of a hard language, whose words you can not understand. Surely, if I sent you to them, they would listen to you. ⁷ But the house of Israel will not listen to you; for they will not listen to me: for all the house of Israel are obstinate and hard-hearted.

²² But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

⁴¹ The people of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and look, something greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look, someone greater than Solomon is here.

²¹ Jesus went out from there, and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.

¹³ "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you devour the houses of widows, and for show make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. ¹⁴ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you shut up the kingdom of heaven in front of people; for you do not enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. ¹⁵ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of hell as yourselves. ¹⁶ "Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.' ¹⁷ You blind fools. For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctified the gold? ¹⁸ 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?' ¹⁹ You blind people. For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it. ²¹ He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it. ²² He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it. ²³ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. ²⁵ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but within they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. ²⁶ You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and the plate, so that the outside may become clean also. ²⁷ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead people's bones, and of all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. ²⁹ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

²⁴ The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

⁸ and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and those from around Tyre and Sidon. A large crowd, when they heard what great things he did, came to him.

⁴⁵ And immediately he made his disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he himself was sending the crowd away.

²⁴ From there he arose, and went away into the region of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not escape notice.

³¹ Again he departed from the borders of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the region of Decapolis.

²² He came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him, and begged Jesus to touch him.

²⁶ Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

¹⁷ He came down with them, and stood on a level place, with a large crowd of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon,

¹⁰ The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them, and withdrew apart to a city called Bethsaida.

⁴² But woe to you Pharisees. For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and the love of God. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone. ⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees. For you love the best seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe to you. For you are like hidden graves, and the people who walk over them do not know it." ⁴⁵ One of the Law scholars answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you insult us also." ⁴⁶ He said, "Woe to you Law scholars also. For you load people with burdens that are difficult to carry, and you yourselves won't even lift one finger to help carry those burdens. ⁴⁷ Woe to you. For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So you are witnesses and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Therefore also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute, ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.' Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe to you Law scholars. For you took away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in, you hindered."

⁴⁴ Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

⁵ Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I tell you, unless one is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷ Do not be surprised that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' ⁸ The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." ⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can these things be?" ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not understand these things?

²¹ These, therefore, came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, "Sir, we want to see Jesus."

²⁰ Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. They came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus, the king's personal aide, their friend, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king's country for food.

⁴⁴ The next Sabbath almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of the Lord. ⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and reviled him. ⁴⁶ Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, "It was necessary that God's word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, look, we turn to the non-Jewish people. ⁴⁷ For so has the Lord commanded us, saying, 'I have set you as a light to the nations, that you may bring salvation to the farthest part of the earth.'" ⁴⁸ As the non-Jewish people heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord. As many as were appointed to everlasting life believed.

³ The next day, we landed at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.

²⁵ When they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one word, "The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah, the prophet, to your fathers, ²⁶ saying, 'Go to this people, and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive. ²⁷ For this people's heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, and I would heal them.' ²⁸ "Be it known therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the nations. They will also listen."

¹¹ Woe to them. For they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in Korah's rebellion.

¹ The burden of Tyre. Howl, you ships of Tarshish. For it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in. From the land of Kittim it is revealed to them. ² Be still, you inhabitants of the coast, you whom the merchants of Sidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished. ³ On great waters, the seed of the Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue. She was the market of nations. ⁴ Be ashamed, Sidon; for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins." ⁵ When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report of Tyre. ⁶ Pass over to Tarshish. Wail, you inhabitants of the coast. ⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel? ⁸ Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth? ⁹ The LORD of hosts has planned it, to defile all the pride of glory, to shame all the honored of the earth. ¹⁰ Cultivate your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint any more. ¹¹ He has stretched out his hand over the sea. He has shaken the kingdoms. The LORD has ordered the destruction of Canaan's strongholds. ¹² He said, "You shall rejoice no more, you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, pass over to Kittim. Even there you will have no rest." ¹³ Look, the land of the Chaldeans. This people was not. The Assyrians founded it for those who dwell in the wilderness. They set up their towers. They overthrew its palaces. They made it a ruin. ¹⁴ Howl, you ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste. ¹⁵ It will come to pass in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king. After the end of seventy years it will be to Tyre like in the song of the prostitute. ¹⁶ Take a harp; go about the city, you prostitute that has been forgotten. Make sweet melody. Sing many songs, that you may be remembered. ¹⁷ It will happen after the end of seventy years that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall return to her wages, and will play the prostitute with all the kingdoms of the world on the surface of the earth. ¹⁸ Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to the LORD. It will not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise will be for those who dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

²² and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea;

³ and send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the people of Ammon, and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah;

¹ It happened in the eleventh year, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² "Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, 'Aha, she is broken: the gate of the peoples; she is turned to me; I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste': ³ therefore thus says the Lord GOD, 'Look, I am against you, Tyre, and will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes its waves to come up.' ⁴ They shall destroy the walls of Tyre, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her a bare rock. ⁵ She shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea; for I have spoken it," says the Lord GOD; "and she shall become a spoil to the nations. ⁶ Her daughters who are in the field shall be slain with the sword: and they shall know that I am the LORD. ⁷ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I will bring on Tyre Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and a company, and many people. ⁸ He shall kill your daughters in the field with the sword; and he shall make forts against you, and cast up a mound against you, and raise up the buckler against you. ⁹ He shall set his battering engines against your walls, and with his axes he shall break down your towers. ¹⁰ By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover you: your walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wagons, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into your gates, as men enter into a city in which is made a breach. ¹¹ With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all your streets; he shall kill your people with the sword; and the pillars of your strength shall go down to the ground. ¹² They shall make a spoil of your riches, and make a prey of your merchandise; and they shall break down your walls, and destroy your pleasant houses; and they shall lay your stones and your timber and your dust in the midst of the waters. ¹³ I will cause the noise of your songs to cease; and the sound of your harps shall be no more heard. ¹⁴ I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for the spreading of nets; you shall be built no more: for I the LORD have spoken it,' says the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ "Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: 'Shall not the islands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you? ¹⁶ Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay aside their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit on the ground, and shall tremble every moment, and be astonished at you. ¹⁷ They shall take up a lamentation over you, and tell you, "How you are destroyed, you have vanished from the seas, the renowned city, who was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who caused their terror to be on all who lived there. ¹⁸ Now shall the islands tremble in the day of your fall; yes, the islands that are in the sea shall be dismayed at your departure."' ¹⁹ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'When I shall make you a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep on you, and the great waters shall cover you; ²⁰ then will I bring you down with those who descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make you to dwell in the lower parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with those who go down to the pit, that you be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living: ²¹ I will make you a terror, and you shall no more have any being; though you are sought for, yet you will never be found again,' says the Lord GOD."

¹⁸ "Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyre: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was worn; yet had he no wages, nor his army, from Tyre, for the service that he had served against it.

⁹ Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they delivered up the whole community to Edom, and did not remember the brotherly covenant; ¹⁰ but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will devour its palaces."

² and Hamath, also, which borders on it; Tyre and Sidon, because they are very wise. ³ Tyre built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver like the dust, and fine gold like the mire of the streets.

¹⁵ Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

²⁴ But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you."

³⁶ But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.

⁴⁷ That servant, who knew his lord's will, and did not prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, ⁴⁸ but he who did not know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

³ how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation—which at the first having been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard;

⁴ For concerning those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, ⁶ and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify the Son of God for themselves again, and put him to open shame. ⁷ For the land which has drunk the rain that comes often on it, and brings forth a crop suitable for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receives blessing from God; ⁸ but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

²⁶ For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries. ²⁸ Anyone who disregards the Law of Moses dies without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ How much worse punishment, do you think, will he be judged worthy of, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant with which he was sanctified an unholy thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him who said, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay." Again, "The Lord will judge his people." ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;

⁷ But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.

¹⁷ In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world.

¹³ Now the people of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly against God.

²⁴ Then the LORD rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the sky. ²⁵ He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.

¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north. ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High." ¹⁵ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit.

¹ How the LORD covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger. He has cast down from heaven to the earth the splendor of Israel, and hasn't remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.

⁴⁸ As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters. ⁴⁹ "'Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. ⁵⁰ They were haughty, and committed abomination before me. So I took them away, as you have seen.

¹² "Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and tell him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. ¹³ You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Gold work of tambourines and of pipes was in you. In the day that you were created they were prepared. ¹⁴ You were the anointed cherub who covers: and I set you, so that you were on the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. ¹⁵ You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. ¹⁶ By the abundance of your traffic they filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I have cast you as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed you, covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. ¹⁷ Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I have cast you to the ground; I have laid you before kings, that they may see you. ¹⁸ By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your traffic, you have profaned your sanctuaries; therefore have I brought forth a fire from the midst of you; it has devoured you, and I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all those who see you. ¹⁹ All those who know you among the peoples shall be astonished at you: you have become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being."'"

¹⁶ I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to Sheol with those who descend into the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the lower parts of the earth. ¹⁷ They also went down into Sheol with him to those who are slain by the sword; yes, those who were his arm, that lived under his shadow in the midst of the nations.

⁴ Though you mount on high as the eagle, and though your nest is set among the stars, I will bring you down from there," says the LORD.

¹³ And leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,

⁵ And when he came into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking him,

¹⁸ I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

²⁴ When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins came to Peter, and said, "Does not your teacher pay the didrachma?"

²³ He said to them, "Doubtless you will tell me this parable, 'Physician, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.'"

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

²³ In hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.

⁴⁶ Jesus came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine. There was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷ When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him, and pleaded with him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was close to death. ⁴⁸ Jesus therefore said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe." ⁴⁹ The nobleman said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, "Go your way. Your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. ⁵¹ As he was now going down, his servants met him, saying that his son was alive. ⁵² So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. They said therefore to him, "Yesterday at one in the afternoon, the fever left him." ⁵³ So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives." He believed, as did his whole house. ⁵⁴ This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.

²⁷ because you will not abandon my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay.

⁴ For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to the lower parts of hell, and committed them to chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; ⁵ and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a proclaimer of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly; ⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; ⁷ and delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked ⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds): ⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, having, in the same way as these, given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of everlasting fire.

⁸ Their dead bodies will be in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

⁶ For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown in an instant, and no hands were laid on her.

¹¹ And if any place will not receive you or listen to you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them."

¹² I tell you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.

¹⁹ He blessed him, and said, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth:

²² Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted up my hand to God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

¹⁴ Look, to the LORD your God belongs heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that is in it. ¹⁵ Only the LORD had a delight in your fathers to love them, and he chose their descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as at this day.

¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.

⁴ that the LORD called, "Samuel. Samuel." And he said, "Here I am." ⁵ He ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." He said, "I did not call; lie down again." He went and lay down. ⁶ The LORD called yet again, "Samuel. Samuel." And he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." He answered, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." ⁷ Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him. ⁸ The LORD called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. ⁹ Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, LORD; for your servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. ¹⁰ The LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, "Samuel. Samuel." Then Samuel said, "Speak; for your servant hears." ¹¹ The LORD said to Samuel, "Look, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle. ¹² In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even to the end. ¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house forever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons were cursing God, and he did not restrain them. ¹⁴ Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be removed with sacrifice nor offering forever." ¹⁵ And Samuel lay there until the morning, and in the morning he got up and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision. ¹⁶ Then Eli called Samuel, and said, "Samuel, my son." He said, "Here I am." ¹⁷ He said, "What is the thing that he has spoken to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you in your ears." ¹⁸ And Samuel told him everything, and did not hide anything from him. And he said, "It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him." ¹⁹ Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground. ²⁰ All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD. ²¹ The LORD appeared again in Shiloh; for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

¹⁵ Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, "The LORD, the God of Israel, who sit above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.

¹³ Now therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name.

² From the lips of children and infants you have established praise, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.

²¹ Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight.

¹⁰ For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and he has covered your heads (the seers). ¹¹ All vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is educated, saying, "Read this, please;" and he says, "I can't, for it is sealed:" ¹² and the book is delivered to one who is not educated, saying, "Read this, please;" and he says, "I can't read." ¹³ And the Lord said, "Because these people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me. And in vain do they worship me, teaching instructions that are the commandments of humans. ¹⁴ Therefore, look, I will again do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; and I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will nullify."

¹⁸ In that day, the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and the eyes of the blind will see out of obscurity and out of darkness. ¹⁹ The humble also will increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among humankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

¹ Thus says the LORD, "Heaven is my throne, and earth is the footstool of my feet. Where then is the house you could build for me? And where then is the place of my rest?

⁵ "Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you. Before you came forth out of the womb, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." ⁶ Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD. Look, I do not know how to speak; for I am a child." ⁷ But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am a child;' for to whoever I shall send you, you shall go, and whatever I shall command you, you shall speak. ⁸ Do not be afraid because of them; for I am with you to deliver you," says the LORD.

²³ I thank you, and praise you, God of my fathers, who has given me wisdom and might, and has now made known to me what we desired of you; for you have made known to us the king's matter."

³⁵ All the inhabitants of the earth are regarded as nothing; and he does according to his will in the host of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or tell him, "What have you done?"

¹¹ And answering, he said to them, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but it is not given to them. ¹² For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever does not have, from him will be taken away even that which he has. ¹³ Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing, they do not hear, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says, 'In hearing you will hear, but will not understand, and seeing you will see, but not perceive. ¹⁵ For the heart of this people has grown dull, and their ears are sluggish in hearing, and they have closed their eyes, otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn back, and I would heal them.' ¹⁶ "But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

¹⁷ And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

³ and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁶ and said to him, "Do you hear what these are saying?" Jesus said to them, "Yes. Did you never read, 'Out of the mouth of children and infants you have prepared praise?'"

¹⁰ And when he was alone, those who were around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. ¹¹ And he said to them, "To you has been given the mystery of the Kingdom of God, but to those who are outside, all things are done in parables, ¹² that 'seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest perhaps they should turn and be forgiven.'"

¹⁴ But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, "Allow the little children to come to me. Do not forbid them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. ¹⁵ Truly I tell you, whoever will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child, he will in no way enter into it." ¹⁶ And he took them in his arms, laying his hands on them, and blessed them.

²¹ In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight." ²² "All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whomever the Son desires to reveal him." ²³ Turning to the disciples, he said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see, ²⁴ for I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them."

⁴² saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed."

³⁹ Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, that those who do not see may see; and that those who see may become blind." ⁴⁰ Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?" ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

³⁸ that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, "Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" ³⁹ For this cause they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, ⁴⁰ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.

²⁴ The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands,

⁸ According as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, to this very day. ⁹ David says, "Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a retribution to them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can't see, and their backs be bent continually."

¹⁸ For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. ¹⁹ For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will nullify." ²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made foolish the wisdom of the world? ²¹ For seeing that in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know God, it was God's good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe. ²² For Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to the non-Jews,

⁶ We speak wisdom, however, among those who are mature, but a wisdom not of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are passing away. ⁷ But we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God determined in advance before the ages for our glory, ⁸ which none of the rulers of this age has understood. For had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If anyone thinks that he is wise among you in this age, let him become a fool, that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He traps the wise in their craftiness." ²⁰ And again, "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile."

¹⁴ But their minds were hardened, for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains, because in Christ it passes away.

³ Even if our Good News is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing; ⁴ in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, so they would not see the light of the glorious Good News of Christ, who is the image of God. ⁵ For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves because of Jesus. ⁶ For it is God, who spoke for light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

¹³ But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth; ¹⁴ to which he called you through our Good News, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹³ Why do you strive against him, because he doesn't give account of any of his matters?

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done; saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure;

²¹ In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight."

¹⁸ So then, he has mercy on whom he desires, and he hardens whom he desires.

³³ Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out. ³⁴ For "Who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" ³⁵ "Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?" ³⁶ For from him and by him and in him are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

⁹ making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him

¹¹ in whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his will;

¹¹ according to the purpose of the ages which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord;

⁹ who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,

¹⁸ Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

²² "All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whomever the Son desires to reveal him."

¹⁸ No one has seen God at any time. The only Son, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.

²¹ For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. ²² For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴ "Truly, truly, I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has everlasting life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. ²⁵ Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. ²⁷ He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. ²⁸ Do not be amazed at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, ²⁹ and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

⁴⁶ Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.

²⁹ I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me."

¹⁵ even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

³ Because he knew that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and was going to God,

⁶ Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ⁷ If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." ⁸ Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." ⁹ Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, and still you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father?'

² even as you gave him authority over all flesh, he will give everlasting life to all whom you have given him. ³ This is everlasting life, that they may know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

⁶ I revealed your name to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me. They have kept your word.

²⁵ Righteous Father, the world hasn't known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me. ²⁶ I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them."

²⁵ For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. ²⁶ The last enemy that will be abolished is death. ²⁷ For, "He put all things under his feet." But when he says "all things" are put under, it is evident that the one who put all things under is the exception.

²⁰ which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, ²¹ far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come. ²² He put all things under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the church, ²³ which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

⁸ You have put all things under his feet." For in that he put all things under him, he left nothing that is not under him. But now we do not yet see that all things are under him. ⁹ But we see him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone. ¹⁰ For it became him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many children to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

²² who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.

²³ Whoever denies the Son, the same does not have the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.

¹⁹ We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. ²⁰ We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

⁹ Whoever goes on and does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. He who remains in the teaching, the same has both the Father and the Son.

¹⁷ To Adam he said, "Because you have listened to your wife's voice, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground for your sake. In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. ¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles will it bring forth to you; and you will eat the plants of the field. ¹⁹ By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

⁷ but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy on me to my destruction in the heat of summer. Selah.

⁴ For my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.

⁷ For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh. ¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.

¹³ that you may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

⁷ Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

⁸ All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and look, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

²² For what has a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, in which he labors under the sun? ²³ For all his days are sorrows, and his travail is grief; yes, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

⁸ There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. For whom then, do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment? This also is vanity, yes, it is a miserable business.

⁴ Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward.

¹⁰ And in that day there will be a root of Jesse, one who stands up to rule over the peoples; to him will the nations seek, and his resting place will be glorious.

¹² to whom he said, "This is the resting place. Give rest to weary;" and "This is the refreshing;" but they would not listen.

²² Look to me, and be saved, every part of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. ²³ By myself have I sworn, the word is gone forth from my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear to God. ²⁴ Only in the LORD, it is said of me, is righteousness and strength; even to him shall men come; and all those who were incensed against him shall be disappointed. ²⁵ In the LORD shall all the descendants of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

¹⁷ Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go. ¹⁸ But would that you had listened to my commandments. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

² For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nor special appearance that we should desire him. ³ He was despised, and rejected by people; a man of sorrows, and familiar with illness; and as one from whom people hide their face. He was despised, and we did not value him.

¹ "Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters. Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. ² Why do you spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which doesn't satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat you that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. ³ Turn your ear, and come to me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the faithful kindnesses of David.

³ to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

¹⁶ Thus says the LORD, "Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, 'Where is the good way?' and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls." But they said, "We will not walk in it."

⁶ How shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? ⁷ Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams? With tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? ⁸ He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

⁴ For they bind heavy and hard to bear burdens, and lay them on people's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

³⁷ All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. Him who comes to me I will in no way throw out.

³⁷ Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

¹⁰ Now therefore why do you tempt God, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

²² For I delight in God's law in my inner being, ²³ but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. ²⁴ What a wretched man I am. Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? ²⁵ Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So then with the mind, I myself serve God's law, but with the flesh, the sin's law.

¹ Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

⁷ and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,

¹ Let us fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest.

¹⁷ The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." He who hears, let him say, "Come." He who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely.

³ Now the man Moses was very humble, above all the men who were on the surface of the earth.

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By David.] LORD, my heart isn't haughty, nor my eyes lofty; nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me.

¹ "Look, my servant I have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul delights. I have put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. ² He will not shout, nor raise his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street. ³ He won't break a bruised reed. And he won't extinguish a dimly burning wick. He will faithfully bring justice. ⁴ He will not grow dim or be crushed, until he has established justice on the earth, and in his name the coastlands will hope."

²⁴ "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, will be compared to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.

²⁷ All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him. ²⁸ "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

¹⁹ He will not quarrel, nor shout; nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. ²⁰ He won't break a bruised reed. And he won't put out a smoldering wick, until he leads justice to victory.

⁵ While he was still speaking, look, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And look, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him."

⁴⁶ "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? ⁴⁷ Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. ⁴⁸ He is like someone building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

³⁵ Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

⁵¹ It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem, ⁵² and sent messengers before his face. They went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him. ⁵³ But they did not receive him, because he was traveling with his face set towards Jerusalem. ⁵⁴ When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky, and consume them?" ⁵⁵ And he turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not realize what kind of Spirit you belong to. ⁵⁶ For the Son of Man did not come to destroy people's lives, but to save them." And they went to another village.

³⁹ She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet, and heard his word. ⁴⁰ But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me." ⁴¹ But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, ⁴² but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her."

¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

¹⁷ If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

²¹ The one who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him." ²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?" ²³ Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling place with him. ²⁴ He who does not love me does not keep my words. The word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me.

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and remain in his love. ¹¹ I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. ¹² "This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. ¹³ Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.

²² For Moses indeed said to the fathers, 'The Lord your God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me. You must listen to him in all things whatever he says to you. ²³ It will be, that every soul that will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.'

³⁷ This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel, 'God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.'

²¹ to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law.

¹ Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ; I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you.

⁵ throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;

²⁰ But you did not learn Christ that way; ²¹ if indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:

⁵ Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,

⁷ but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. ⁸ And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.

⁸ giving vengeance to those who do not know God, and to those who do not obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus,

³ For we who have believed do enter into that rest, even as he has said, "As I swore in my wrath, they will not enter into my rest;" although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. ⁴ For he has said this somewhere about the seventh day, "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works;" ⁵ and in this place again, "They will not enter into my rest." ⁶ Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and they to whom the good news was before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience, ⁷ he again appoints a certain day, "Today," saying through David so long a time afterward (just as has been said), "Today if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." ⁸ For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day. ⁹ There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. ¹⁰ For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. ¹¹ Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.

⁹ Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of everlasting salvation,

²¹ For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps, ²² who "committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth." ²³ Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

⁶ he who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk just like he walked.

¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace.

⁸ He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

³³ I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up. I have overcome the world."

²⁸ For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things:

⁴ who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. ⁵ For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ.

¹⁷ For this momentary light affliction is working for us a far more exceeding and everlasting weight of glory;

⁹ He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. ¹⁰ Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.

¹⁸ But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

¹³ I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

³ For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous.
