¹⁰ All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD, I cut them off.

¹ Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, saying, "Look, we are your bone and your flesh. ² In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. The LORD said to you, 'You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be ruler over Israel.'" ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah. ⁶ The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, "You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will repel you"; thinking, "David can't come in here." ⁷ Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the City of David. ⁸ David said on that day, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and strike the lame and the blind, those who hate the soul of David." Therefore they say, "The blind and the lame can't come into the palace." ⁹ David lived in the stronghold, and called it the City of David. And he built a city all around from the Millo and inward. ¹⁰ David grew greater and greater; for the LORD of hosts was with him. ¹¹ Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and craftsmen of wood, and craftsmen of a wall; and they built David a palace. ¹² And David knew that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake. ¹³ David took more secondary wives and wives out of Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron; and there were born to David more sons and daughters. ¹⁴ These are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, ¹⁵ and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Eliphelet, and Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia, ¹⁶ and Elishama, and Baaliada, and Eliphelet. ¹⁷ When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the stronghold. ¹⁸ Now the Philistines came and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. ¹⁹ David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?" The LORD said to David, "Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand." ²⁰ David came to Baal Perazim, and David struck them there; and he said, "The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of waters." Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. ²¹ And they abandoned their idols there; and David and his men took them away. ²² The Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. ²³ And David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD said to him, "You shall not go up. Circle around behind them, and attack them opposite the balsam trees. ²⁴ And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, that then you are to act decisively; for then the LORD has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines." ²⁵ David did so, as the LORD commanded him, and struck the Philistines from Geba as far as the approach to Gezer.

¹ After this it happened that David struck the Philistines, and subdued them, and David took the bridle of Ammah out of the hand of the Philistines. ² He struck Moab, and measured them with the line, making them to lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death, and one full line to keep alive. The Moabites became servants to David, and brought tribute. ³ David struck also Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his dominion at the River. ⁴ And David took from him a thousand of his chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for one hundred chariots. ⁵ When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck of the Arameans two and twenty thousand men. ⁶ Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus; and the Arameans became servants to David, and brought tribute. The LORD gave victory to David wherever he went. ⁷ And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem, which, later on, were also taken by Shishak king of Egypt in the days of Rehoboam son of Solomon when he went up to Jerusalem. ⁸ From Tebah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took a very great amount of bronze. ⁹ When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had struck all the army of Hadadezer, ¹⁰ then Toi sent Hadoram his son to king David, to greet him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And he brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of bronze. ¹¹ King David also dedicated these to the LORD, with the silver and gold that he dedicated of all the nations which he subdued; ¹² of Edom, and of Moab, and of the people of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah. ¹³ And David made a name for himself when he returned from defeating the Arameans. And Abishai son of Zeruiah defeated the Edomites in the Valley of Salt--eighteen thousand. ¹⁴ And he put a garrison in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to David. The LORD gave victory to David wherever he went. ¹⁵ David reigned over all Israel; and David executed justice and righteousness to all his people. ¹⁶ Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; ¹⁷ and Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were priests; and Shisha was scribe; ¹⁸ and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief ministers.

¹ It happened after this, that the king of the people of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. ² David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me." So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David's servants came into the land of the people of Ammon. ³ But the leaders of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, "Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn't David sent his servants to you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?" ⁴ So Hanun took David's servants and shaved off their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. ⁵ When David was told, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, "Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return." ⁶ When the people of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired the Arameans of Beth Rehob, and the Arameans of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men. ⁷ When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men. ⁸ The people of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Arameans of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. ⁹ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Arameans: ¹⁰ The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the people of Ammon. ¹¹ He said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. ¹² Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and the LORD do that which seems good to him." ¹³ So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Arameans: and they fled before him. ¹⁴ When the people of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the people of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem. ¹⁵ When the Arameans saw that they were defeated by the children of Israel, they gathered themselves together. ¹⁶ Hadadezer sent, and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head. ¹⁷ It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Arameans set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. ¹⁸ The Arameans fled before Israel; and David killed of the Arameans seven hundred charioteers, and forty thousand foot soldiers, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there. ¹⁹ When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Arameans feared to help the people of Ammon any more.

⁴⁰ You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, that I might cut off those who hate me.

¹⁷ They came around me like water all day long. They completely engulfed me.

³ It will happen in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.

¹ Look, a day of the LORD comes, when your spoil will be divided in your midst. ² For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city will be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city will go out into captivity, and the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city. ³ Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

¹⁹ I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him who sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ The beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who worked the signs in his sight, with which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. ²¹ The rest were killed with the sword of him who sat on the horse, the sword which came forth out of his mouth. All the birds were filled with their flesh.

⁸ and he will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. ⁹ They went up over the breadth of the earth, and surrounded the camp of the saints, and the beloved city, and fire came down out of heaven and devoured them.
