⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert.

¹¹ The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

²¹ I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust: and I cast its dust into the brook that descended out of the mountain. ²² At Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth Hattaavah, you provoked the LORD to wrath.

¹⁷ Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert.

⁸ Do not harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness, ⁹ when your fathers tempted me, tested me, and saw my work. ¹⁰ For forty years I loathed that generation, and said, "It is a people who go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways."

¹⁴ but gave in to craving in the desert, and tested God in the wasteland. ¹⁵ He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul. ¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron, the LORD's holy one. ¹⁷ The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. ¹⁸ A fire was kindled in their company. The flame burned up the wicked. ¹⁹ They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped a molten image. ²⁰ Thus they exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass. ²¹ They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, ²² Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome things by the Sea at the End. ²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn't destroy them. ²⁴ Yes, they despised the pleasant land. They did not believe his word, ²⁵ but murmured in their tents, and did not listen to the LORD's voice. ²⁶ Therefore he swore to them that he would overthrow them in the wilderness, ²⁷ and that he would make their offspring fall among the nations, and scatter them in the lands. ²⁸ They joined themselves also to Baal Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. ²⁹ Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds. The plague broke in on them. ³⁰ Then Phinehas stood up, and executed judgment, so the plague was stopped. ³¹ That was credited to him for righteousness, for all generations to come. ³² They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, so that Moses was troubled for their sakes; ³³ because they were rebellious against his spirit, he spoke rashly with his lips.

¹¹ because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High.

¹³ He said, "Listen now, house of David: Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God also?

¹⁰ But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he himself fought against them.

³⁰ Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

¹⁵ while it is said, "Today if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion." ¹⁶ For who, when they heard, rebelled? No, did not all those who came out of Egypt by Moses? ¹⁷ With whom was he displeased forty years? Was not it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
