¹³ »Your herds and flocks, silver and gold, and all that you have will increase.

¹ Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. ² Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. ³ He traveled from place to place from the Negev until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier. ⁴ This was where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of Jehovah. ⁵ Lot moved about with Abram. He also had flocks and herds and tents.

³ He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, one thousand head of cattle, and five hundred donkeys. He also had a large number of servants. In fact he was the greatest (richest) of all the Orientals in the East!

⁶ »Every man walks about like a vain illusion. He makes a lot of noise over nothing. He hoards riches and does not know who will receive them.

¹³ A member of the crowd said: »Teacher, help my brother divide the inheritance with me.« ¹⁴ Then he said: »Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?« ¹⁵ Jesus said: »Be careful, do not covet, for life does not come from your possessions.« ¹⁶ He spoke an illustration to them: »The land of a rich man produced well. ¹⁷ »He reasoned to himself, what will I do? I have nowhere to store my fruits? ¹⁸ »He said: »I would pull down my barns and build larger barns. I will store all my grain and goods there. ¹⁹ »I will say to my self: ‘You have many possessions saved for many years. Take it easy and eat, drink and be merry.’ ²⁰ »But God said to him: ‘You fool this night you will give up your life. Then who will have all these things you accumulated?’ ²¹ »He who lays up (earthly) treasure for himself is not rich toward God.«
