¹ One day Moses was taking care of the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock across the desert to Sinai, the holy mountain.

¹⁶ The priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

¹⁸ When they returned to Reuel their father, he said, »Why have you come back so soon today?«

²¹ Moses was content to live with the man. He gave Moses his daughter Zipporah.

⁵ God said: »Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground.

²⁷ Jehovah said to Aaron: »Go to meet Moses in the wilderness.« So he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him.

⁶ »Behold! I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock and water will come out of it. Then the people may drink.« Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹ Jethro was the priest of Midian and the father-in-law of Moses. He heard what Jehovah God had done for Moses and his people, after rescuing them from Egypt. ² Moses sent his wife Zipporah and her two sons to stay with Jethro. Jethro welcomed them. ³ Moses was still a foreigner in Midian when his first son was born. Moses said: »I will name him Gershom.« ⁴ When his second son was born, Moses said: »I will name him Eliezer, because the God my father worshiped has saved me from the king of Egypt.« ⁵ Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law brought Moses’ sons and wife to Moses in the desert. He was camped near the mountain of God. ⁶ Jethro sent word to Moses: »I am coming to visit you. I am bringing your wife and her two sons.«

³ Jehovah called Moses from the mountain. So Moses went up the mountain to God. Jehovah told him: »This is what you must say to the descendants of Jacob. Tell the Israelites:

¹¹ »They should be ready in three days. I will descend to Mount Sinai, where all of them can see me.

¹³ Moses and Joshua his assistant got ready. Moses started up the mountain to meet with God.

¹⁵ Moses went up to the mountain. The cloud covered the mountain. ¹⁶ The glory of Jehovah rested on Mount Sinai. The cloud covered it for six days. God called to Moses on the seventh day. He spoke from inside the cloud. ¹⁷ To the eyes of the Israelites the appearance of the glory of Jehovah was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain.

²⁹ Moses said to his brother-in-law Hobab son of Jethro the Midianite: We are about to start out for the place Jehovah said he would give us. He promised to make Israel prosperous, so come with us, and we will share our prosperity with you.

⁶ »Jehovah our God spoke to us in Horeb. He said: ‘You have lived long enough on this mountain.

¹⁰ »Do you remember the day you stood in the presence of Jehovah your God at Mount Sinai (Horeb)? He said to me: ‘assemble the people. I want them to hear what I have to say, so that they will learn to obey me as long as they live. Then they will teach their children to do the same.’ ¹¹ Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent at the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.

⁸ So he got up and took food and drink. He was strengthened to go for forty days and forty nights, to Horeb, the mountain of God.

⁷⁰ He chose his servant David. He took him from the sheep pens. ⁷¹ He brought him from tending the ewes that had lambs so that David could be the shepherd of the people of Jacob, of Israel, the people who belonged to Jehovah. ⁷² With unselfish devotion David became their shepherd. With skill he guided them.

¹⁹ At Mount Horeb they made a statue of a calf. They worshiped an idol made of metal.

¹ The words of Amos concerning Israel. He was among the herdsmen of Tekoa in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel. It was two years before the earthquake.

¹⁴ Amos told Amaziah, »I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son. I was a herdsman, and a grower of sycamore figs. ¹⁵ »Jehovah took me from following the flock, and Jehovah said to me: ‘Go prophesy to my people Israel.’«

⁴ »You should remember the Law of Moses my servant. I commanded the statutes and ordinances (regulations and judgments) to him at Horeb for all Israel.

¹⁸ Jesus walked on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. There he saw Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother. They were fishermen. ¹⁹ He said to them: »Follow me and I will teach you to catch people.«

⁸ Shepherds in the same country were in the field keeping watch by night over their flock.
