¹ Do not be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁰ Lot looked up and saw that the district of the Jordan River was well watered, like the garden of Jehovah, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. This was before Jehovah destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. ¹¹ So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: ¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. ¹³ The men of Sodom were wicked and sinned greatly against Jehovah.

¹ That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there as they arrived. When he saw them, he got up to greet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed low to the ground. ² »My lords,« he said, »come to my home to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night. You may get up in the morning as early as you like and be on your way again.« »Oh no,« they said, »We will spend the night out here in the city square.« ³ Lot insisted, so at last they went home with him. He set a great feast before them, complete with fresh unleavened (unfermented) bread. ⁴ They prepared to retire for the night when suddenly all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house. ⁵ They shouted to Lot: »Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out so we can have sex with them!« ⁶ Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. ⁷ »Please, my brothers,« he begged, »do not do such a wicked thing. ⁸ »I have two virgin daughters. Do with them as you wish, but leave these men alone, for they are under my protection.« ⁹ »Stand back!« they shouted. »Who do you think you are? We let you settle among us, and now you are trying to tell us what to do! We will treat you far worse than those other men!« They pushed Lot and began breaking down the door. ¹⁰ But the two angels reached out and pulled Lot in and bolted the door. ¹¹ Then they blinded the men of Sodom so they could not find the doorway.

⁹ Do not sweep me away with hardened sinners or my life along with bloodthirsty people.

¹ ([Psalm of David]) Do not be bothered by evildoers. Do not envy those who do wicked things.

⁷ Surrender to Jehovah and wait patiently for him. Do not be preoccupied with an evildoer who succeeds in his way when he carries out his schemes.

³ I was envious of arrogant people when I saw the peace and prosperity that wicked people enjoy.

¹¹ If they say: »Come with us. Let us lie in wait to kill someone. Let us ambush the innocent without cause. ¹² »Let us swallow them alive and whole just as the grave does, and just as the dead go into the pit. ¹³ »We will find precious material possessions and we fill our houses with plunder. ¹⁴ »Throw in with us. Let us all have one purse.« ¹⁵ My son, do not walk in the way with them. Withhold your food from their path!

³¹ Do not be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do.

²⁰ The one who walks with wise men will be wise. A companion of fools will be destroyed.

¹⁷ Do not let your heart envy sinners, but reverence Jehovah all day long.

¹⁹ Do not worry about evil people. Do not envy the wicked!

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh (sinful human nature) are apparent. They are: fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, wrath, contentions, divisions, sects, ²¹ envies, drunkenness, revelries, and things like these. I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that those who practice such things would not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁵ Or do you think the scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the attitude of the heart (mental disposition) that he induced to live in us cause us to envy? ⁶ But he gives more grace. The scripture said, »God resists the proud, but gives grace (loving-kindness) to the humble.«
