⁴⁵ Then it goes, and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they enter in and live there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.

²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow casts out devils only by Beelzebub, the prince of the devils.

³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize his inheritance. ³⁹ And they took him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. ⁴⁰ Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? ⁴¹ They said to him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard to other tenants, who shall give him the fruits in their seasons. ⁴² Jesus said to them, Did you never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same has become the cornerstone: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? ⁴³ Therefore I say to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation which will bring forth its fruit. ⁴⁴ And whoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cross sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.

³² Fill up, then, the measure of the sins of your fathers. ³³ You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell? ³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you shall kill and crucify; and some of them you shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: ³⁵ That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berachiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly I say to you, All these things shall come upon this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets, and stone those who are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not let me! ³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate. ³⁹ For I say to you, You shall not see me again, until you shall say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

⁹ And he was asking him, What is your name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

⁴⁹ For this reason also the wisdom of God said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall kill and persecute, ⁵⁰ That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; ⁵¹ From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple: truly I say to you, It shall be required of this generation.

⁴¹ And when he had come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, ⁴² Saying, If you, even you, had only known on this day, the things which make for peace! but now they are hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies shall build an embankment about you, and surround you, and keep you in on every side, ⁴⁴ And shall level you to the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you did not know the time of your visitation.

²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin: but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no other man has done, they would not have sin: but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

⁸ As it is written, God has given them the spirit of stupor, eyes that should not see, and ears that should not hear; down to this day. ⁹ And David says, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a retribution to them: ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their backs forever.

¹² For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against authorities, against the powers of darkness of this world, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

¹⁵ Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us. They do not please God, and oppose all men, ¹⁶ By hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved, thus always filling up their sins to the limit: but wrath has come upon them at last.

⁴ For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, ⁶ If they shall fall away, to be brought back again to repentance; for they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and hold him up to public disgrace. ⁷ For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it, and brings forth vegetation useful for those by whom it is farmed, receives a blessing from God: ⁸ But that which bears thorns and thistles is worthless, and is near to being cursed; its end is to be burned.

²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ But a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He who despised Moses' law died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses: ²⁹ How much more severe punishment do you suppose he shall deserve, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has affronted the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him who has said, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

³⁹ But we are not of those who draw back to destruction; but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

¹⁴ Having eyes full of adultery, who cannot cease from sin; enticing unstable souls: they have a heart trained in greed; cursed children: ¹⁵ Who have forsaken the right way, and have gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; ¹⁶ But was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a man's voice restrained the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are wells without water, mists driven before a tempest; for whom the blackest darkness is reserved. ¹⁸ For they speak great swelling words of vanity, and allure through the lusts of the flesh, through sensuality, those who are just escaping from the ones who live in error. ¹⁹ While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the slaves of depravity: for by that which a man is overcome, to that he is enslaved. ²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled by them, and overcome, they are worse off in the end than at the beginning. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog returns to its own vomit; and the sow that is washed returns to wallowing in the mire.

¹⁶ If any man sees his brother commit a sin which does not lead to death, he shall ask, and God shall grant him life, for those whose sin is not to death. There is a sin to death: I do not say that he should pray for that. ¹⁷ All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin that does not lead to death.

¹⁰ But these men speak evil of things which they do not understand: but what they know by instinct, like brute beasts, by these things they corrupt themselves. ¹¹ Woe to them! for they have gone the way of Cain, and for profit have plunged into the error of Balaam, and have perished in the rebellion of Korah. ¹² These men are blemishes at your feasts of love, when they eat with you without fear: clouds without water, carried about by the winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; ¹³ Raging waves of the sea, flinging up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackest darkness is reserved forever.
