²¹ Yet he has no root in himself, and endures only for a while: when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, he falls away.

¹⁰ Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. ¹² Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

²² Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name cast out devils? and in your name done many miracles? ²³ And then I will declare to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you who work iniquity.

²⁶ And every one who hears these words of mine, and does not do them, is like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

²² And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he who endures to the end shall be saved.

³⁷ He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And he who does not take up his cross, and follow after me, is not worthy of me. ³⁹ He who finds his life shall lose it: and he who loses his life for my sake shall find it.

⁶ And blessed is he who does not find cause to stumble over me.

⁶ And when the sun came up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

⁵⁷ And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, except in his home town, and in his own house.

²⁴ Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. ²⁵ For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it: and whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it. ²⁶ For what does it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

⁹ Then they shall deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated by all nations for my name's sake. ¹⁰ And then shall many fall away, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

¹³ But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

³¹ Then Jesus said to them, This night all of you shall fall away because of me: for it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.

³³ Peter answered and said to him, Though all fall away because of you, yet I will never fall away.

¹⁷ But have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution arises for the word's sake, they immediately fall away.

³⁴ And when he had called the people to him, with his disciples also, he said to them, Whoever would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. ³⁵ For whoever would save his life shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, shall save it. ³⁶ For what does it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

¹² Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. ¹³ And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he who endures to the end shall be saved.

¹³ Those on the rock are the ones, who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but they have no root; they believe for a while, but in time of temptation fall away.

²³ And he said to them all, If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. ²⁴ For whoever will save his life shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for my sake, he shall save it. ²⁵ For what advantage is there for a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?

²⁶ If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yea, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. ²⁷ And whoever does not carry his own cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. ²⁸ For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has sufficient money to finish it? ²⁹ Lest perhaps, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all who behold it will begin to mock him, ³⁰ Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. ³¹ Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first, and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation, and asks terms of peace. ³³ So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has, cannot be my disciple.

¹² But before all this, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, and you shall be brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. ¹³ And it shall be a time for you to bear testimony. ¹⁴ Therefore, settle it in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand how you shall answer: ¹⁵ For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to resist or refute. ¹⁶ And you shall be betrayed both by parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. ¹⁷ And you shall be hated by all for my name's sake. ¹⁸ But not a hair of your head shall perish.

²⁶ Jesus answered them and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, You seek me, not because you saw the miraculous signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.

⁶¹ But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, Does this offend you? ⁶² What then if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before? ⁶³ The spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words I speak to you are spirit and life. ⁶⁴ But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning those who did not believe, and who would betray him. ⁶⁵ And he said, Therefore I said to you, that no one can come to me, unless it is granted to him by the Father.

⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? ⁷¹ He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was he, one of the twelve, who would betray him.

²⁵ He who loves his life shall lose it; and he who hates his life in this world shall keep it for life eternal. ²⁶ If any man serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also: if any man serves me, the Father will honour him.

⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: He who abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. ⁶ If a man does not abide in me, he is thrown away as a branch, and withers; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. ⁷ If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.

²¹ You have no part or portion in this matter: for your heart is not right in the sight of God. ²² Therefore, repent of this wickedness, and pray to God, that perhaps the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. ²³ For I perceive that you are full of bitterness, and in the bondage of iniquity.

⁷ To those who by patience in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

⁶ For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; but faith which works through love.

¹² Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh would compel you to be circumcised; but only to avoid suffering persecution for the cross of Christ.

¹⁵ For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only a new creation.

¹⁷ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

⁶ Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.

¹⁵ This you know, that all those who are in Asia have turned away from me; among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.

¹⁰ For Demas, having loved this present world, has forsaken me and has departed to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

³⁵ Therefore, do not cast away your confidence, which has a great reward. ³⁶ For you have need of endurance, that, after you have done the will of God, you might receive the promise. ³⁷ For yet a little while longer, and he who shall come will come, and will not tarry. ³⁸ But my righteous one shall live by faith: but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. ³⁹ But we are not of those who draw back to destruction; but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

⁵ Who are guarded by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

⁸ For if these things are in you, and are increasing, they keep you from being either ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ But he who lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us: but they went out, that it might be made clear that none of them were of us. ²⁰ But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know the truth.

¹³ I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is: and that you hold fast to my name, and have not denied my faith, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was slain among you, where Satan dwells.
