Matthew 23 Cross References - Sawyer

1 (21:1) THEN Jesus spoke to the multitudes and his disciples, 2 saying, The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 All things therefore which they tell you, do and keep. But do not their works. For they say and do not, 4 but bind heavy burdens and put them on the shoulders of men, but will not move them with their finger. 5 And they do all their works to be seen by men. For they make broad their prayer fillets, and enlarge the fringes, 6 and love the first tables at feasts, and the first seats in the synagogues, 7 and salutations in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi. 8 But do not you be called Rabbi; For one is your teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And call no man your father on the earth, for one is your heavenly Father. 10 Neither be called leaders, for one is your leader, the Christ. 11 But the greatest of you shall be your servant, 12 and whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. 13 (21:2) But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven before men; for you enter not into it, neither do you suffer those entering to go in. 14 (Added verse not retained in Sawyer) 15 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you compass the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. 16 Woe to you blind guides, who say, Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound. 17 Fools and blind! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple which sanctifies the gold? 18 If a man swears by the altar, it is nothing; but if be swears by the gift which is on it, he is bound. 19 Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifies the gift? 20 He then that swears by the altar, swears by it, and by all things on it; 21 and he that swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him that inhabits it; 22 and he that swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him that sits on it. 23 (21:3) Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith. These you ought to do, and not neglect the others. 24 Blind guides! who strain out a gnat and swallow down a camel. 25 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and platter, but within they are full of plunder and excess. 26 Blind Pharisee! cleanse first that which is in the cup and platter, that its outside may be clean also. 27 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which appear fair without, but within are full of the bones of the dead and of all impurity. 28 So also you on the outside appear just to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. 29 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous, 30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 So that you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets; 32 and you have filled up the measure of your fathers. 33 Serpents, offspring of vipers! How can you escape the judgment of hell? 34 (21:4) Therefore, behold, I send you prophets, and wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; 35 that all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah, son of Bararchiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar, may come upon you. 36 I tell you truly, that all these [crimes] shall come on this generation. 37 (21:5) Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets, and stoning those sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, as a bird gathers her brood under her wings, but you would not! 38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; 39 for I tell you that you shall not see me henceforth, till you say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord!

Matthew 15:10-20

10 (13:2) And having called the multitude, he said, Hear and understand. 11 Not that which enters into the mouth, defiles the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth that defiles the man. 12 Then the disciples came to him, and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this word? 13 And he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them go; they are blind guides of the blind. But if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into the pit. 15 And Peter answered and said to him, Explain the parable to us. 16 And he said, Are you so entirely without understanding? 17 Do you not understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is cast out on the earth? 18 But the things which proceed from the mouth come from the heart, and these defile the man. 19 For from the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies: 20 these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.

2 Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders, for they wash not their hands when they eat bread? 3 And he answered and said to them, Why do you transgress the command of God by your tradition? 4 For God said, Honor your father and mother; and he that reviles father or mother, let him surely die. 5 But you say, Whoever says to his father or mother what you might be profited with by me is a gift, 6 then he shall not honor his father or his mother; and you have made the law of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophecy of you, saying; 8 This people honors me with the lips, but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain do they worship me, teaching teachings and commandments of men.

1 (5:6) But take heed not to perform your righteousness before men, to be seen by them; otherwise indeed, you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 When, therefore, you give in charity, sound not a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. I tell you truly, they have their reward. 3 But when you give in charity let not your left hand know what your right hand does, 4 that your charity may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you. 5 (5:7) And when you pray, be not like the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and at the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. I tell you truly, they have their reward. 6 But when you pray enter into your private room, and having shut your door pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you. 7 And when you pray use not vain repetitions, as the gentiles do; for they think they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not, therefore, like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray, therefore, thus; Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name; 10 thy kingdom come; thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth; 11 give us to-day our essential bread, 12 and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; 13 and bring us not into trial, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive men their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you; 15 but if you forgive not men, neither will your Father forgive your offenses. 16 (5:8) And when you fast, be not like the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to fast. I tell you truly, they have their reward.

Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. 52 Woe to you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you do not enter in yourselves, and you forbid those entering. 53 (16:9) And when he had gone out thence the scribes and Pharisees were extremely angry, and questioned him on many subjects, 54 watching him, to catch something from his mouth.

Say thus to him; The Lord has need of him. 32 And those sent, going, found as he said to them. 33 And untying the colt, his owners said to them, Why do you untie the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord has need of him. 35 And they brought him to Jesus; and spreading their clothes on the colt they put Jesus on him. 36 And as he proceeded they spread their clothes in the way. 37 And when he was now approaching, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, all the multitude of the disciples began to rejoice, and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they saw, 38 saying, Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord; peace be in heaven, and glory in the highest [heavens]. 39 And some of the Pharisees, from the multitude, said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples. 40 And he answered and said to them, I tell you that if these should be silent the stones would cry out. 41 (25:2) And when he came near and saw the city he wept over it, 42 saying, O, that you had known, even you, and indeed in this your day, the things which are for your peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. 43 For days of [trouble] will come upon you, and your enemies shall throw an embankment around you, and shut you in, and press you on every side, 44 and destroy you and your children with you, and not leave stone upon stone in you; because you knew not the time of your visitation.

Luke 20:11-14

11 And again he sent another servant; and they beat him, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him, and cast him out. 13 And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; doubtless, when they see him they will respect him. 14 But seeing him, the husbandmen reasoned with themselves, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

14 but their minds were blinded. For to this day in reading the old covenant the same vail remains, not taken away because it is taken away in Christ; 15 but to this day when Moses is read a vail lies upon their minds; 16 but when they turn to the Lord the vail is taken away. 17 And the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty. 18 And we all with unvailed face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same likeness, from glory to glory, as by the Spirit of the Lord.
