Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth. ⁶ When Saul heard that David had been discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul stayed in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him); ⁷ Then Saul said to his servants that stood around him, "Hear now, you Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; ⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this time?" ⁹ Then Doeg the Edomite answered, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of the LORD for him, and gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine." ¹¹ Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: And they all came to the king. ¹² And Saul said, "Hear now, you son of Ahitub." And he answered, "Here I am, my lord." ¹³ And Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this moment?" ¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, "And who is so faithful among all your servants as David, which is the king's son-in-law, and goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house? ¹⁵ Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me: Let not the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father: For your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more." ¹⁶ And the king said, "You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you, and all your father's house." ¹⁷ And the king said to the footmen that stood around him, "Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD: Because their hand is also with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not disclose it to me." But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, "Turn yourself, and fall upon the priests." And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day eighty-five persons that wore a linen ephod. ¹⁹ And he smote Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword. ²⁰ And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. ²¹ And Abiathar informed David that Saul had slain the LORD's priests. ²² And David said to Abiathar, "I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have brought about the death of all the persons of your father's house. ²³ Abide with me, do not fear: For he that seeks my life seeks your life: But with me you shall be in safe guard."

¹⁰ And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. ¹¹ And the servants of Achish said to him, "Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing of him to one another in dances, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands'?" ¹² And David laid up these words in his heart, and was exceedingly afraid of Achish the king of Gath. ¹³ And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scraped on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. ¹⁴ Then Achish said to his servants, "Lo, you see the man is mad: Why then have you brought him to me? ¹⁵ Have I need of mad men, that you have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?"

¹³ And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam: And the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁴ And David was then in a hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.

¹⁵ Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

¹ A Psalm of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed. I will bless the LORD at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

¹ To the chief Musician, Altaschith; Michtam of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave. Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me: For my soul trusts in You: Yes, in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities are over. ² I will cry to God most high; to God that performs all things for me. ³ He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth His mercy and His truth. ⁴ My soul is among lions: And I lie even among those that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. ⁵ Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be above all the earth. ⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: They have dug a pit before me, into the midst of which they themselves have fallen. ¹ Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave. I cried out to the LORD with my voice; with my voice to the LORD did I make my supplication. ² I poured out my complaint before Him; I declared before Him my trouble. ³ When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then You knew my path. In the way in which I walked they have secretly laid a snare for me. ⁴ I looked on my right hand side, and beheld, but there was no man that knew me: Refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. ⁵ I cried out to You, O LORD: I said, "You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living. ⁶ Attend to my cry; for I am brought very low: Deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I. ⁷ Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise Your name: The righteous shall compass me around; for You shall deal bountifully with me."

³ For, behold, the LORD comes forth out of His place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth.

¹⁵ Yet I will bring an heir to you, O inhabitant of Mareshah: He shall come to Adullam, the glory of Israel.

³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy): They wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

³ Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and dwelled in the land of Tob: And there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

²⁵ And the children of Dan said to him, "Let not your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run on you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household.

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, and wept sorely.

¹⁶ "Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be captain over My people Israel, that he may save My people out of the hand of the Philistines: For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me."

¹³ Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went wherever they could go. And it was told to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah; and he ceased from going forth.

¹³ And David said to his men, "Gird on your swords, every man." And every man girded on his sword; and David also girded on his sword: And about four hundred men went up after David; and two hundred stayed by the stuff.

¹⁵ But the men were very good to us, and we were not hurt, neither were we missing anything, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields: ¹⁶ They were a wall to us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

⁶ And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: But David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

²² Then all the wicked men and men of Belial answered, of those that went with David, and said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart." ²³ Then David said, "You shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD has given us, Who has preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand. ²⁴ For who will hearken to you in this matter? But as his part is that goes down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarries by the stuff: They shall proportion alike."

² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were he that led out and brought in Israel: And the LORD said to you, You shall feed my people Israel, and you shall be a captain over Israel.

⁸ For, said Hushai, you know your father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: And your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

⁵ turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father, I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears: Behold, I will heal you: On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD.

¹⁵ Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁶ And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem. ¹⁷ And David longed, and said, "Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! ¹⁸ And the three broke through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: But David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD. ¹⁹ And said, "My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: Shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? For with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

¹² For He shall deliver the needy when he cries; the poor also, and him that has no helper. ¹³ He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. ¹⁴ He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: And their blood shall be precious in his sight.

⁶ Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those that are of heavy hearts.

¹² But when Jesus heard that, He said to them, "Those that are whole do not need a physician, but those that are sick. ¹³ But go and learn what this means: 'I will have mercy, and not sacrifice': For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.

²⁸ Come to Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²⁵ But since he did not have it to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. ²⁶ Therefore the servant fell down, and worshiped him, saying, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you all of it.' ²⁷ Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. ²⁸ But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, who owed him a hundred silver coins: And he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe!' ²⁹ Then his fellow-servant fell down at his feet, and implored him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you all of it.' ³⁰ And he would not: But went and cast him into prison, until he should pay the debt. ³¹ So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told all that was done to their lord. ³² Then his lord, after he had called him, said to him, 'O you wicked servant; I forgave you all that debt because you desired me to: ³³ Should you not have also had compassion on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you?' ³⁴ And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay all that was due to him.

¹⁰ For it suited Him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

¹¹ And Joseph placed his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

¹² Honor your father and your mother: That your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God gives you.

²⁹ Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

¹ Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife, and his two sons. ² And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. ³ And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. ⁴ And they took themselves wives from the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: And they dwelled there about ten years.

¹⁰ Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, I have purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead is not cut off from among his brothers, and from the gate of his place: You are witnesses this day."

¹⁷ And the women, her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, "There is a son born to Naomi"; and they called his name Obed: He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

¹⁸ And Samuel told him every word, and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the LORD: Let Him do what seems good to Him."

⁴⁷ So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: And wherever he turned himself, he vexed them.

²⁵ And the king said to Zadok, "Carry back the ark of God into the city: If I shall find favor in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation: ²⁶ But if he thus say, "I have no delight in you; behold, here I am, let him do to me as seems good to him.

⁴ For God commanded, saying, 'Honor your father and mother': And, 'He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.' ⁵ But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or his mother, "Whatever you might be profited by me, it is a gift"; ⁶ and does not honor his father or his mother, thinking he shall be exempt.' Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

²³ Therefore I hope to send him in the present, so soon as I see how it will go with me. ²⁴ But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly.

⁴ But if any widow has children or nephews, let them first learn to show piety at home, and to repay their parents: For this is good and acceptable before God.

¹ Then they told David, saying, "Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshing-floors." ² Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go and smite these Philistines?" And the LORD said to David, "Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah." ³ And David's men said to him, "Behold, we are afraid here in Judah: How much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?" ⁴ Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, "Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand." ⁵ So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their domestic beasts, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. ⁶ And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.

¹¹ For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

¹⁶ And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold to David.

⁹ And the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,

²⁹ Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

²⁵ And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet: For so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.

¹¹ And I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

¹ To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. In the LORD I put my trust: How do you say to my soul, "Flee as a bird to your mountain"?

¹² "Do not answer, 'A conspiracy', to all those of whom this people shall suppose, 'A conspiracy'; neither should you fear their terribleness, nor be afraid. ¹³ Sanctify the LORD of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. ¹⁴ And He shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a trap and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

²³ But when they persecute you in this city, flee into another: For truly I say to you, You shall not finish going through the cities of Israel, until the Son of Man comes.

³³ And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called on the name of the LORD there, the everlasting God.

⁵ And she dwelled under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in Mount Ephraim: And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

¹⁰ And it came to pass on the next day, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: And David played with his hand, as at other times: And there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

⁹ And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: And David played with his hand.

³³ And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: By this Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to slay David.

¹¹ And he said, "This will be the manner of the king who shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. ¹² And he will appoint himself captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

¹⁴ And he will take your, fields and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. ¹⁵ And he will take a tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

¹⁴ And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

²⁷ And it came to pass on the next day, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: And Saul said to his son Jonathan, "Why doesn't the son of Jesse come to meat, neither yesterday, nor today?"

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, "You son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own confusion, and to the confusion of your mother's nakedness?

⁹ Then Doeg the Edomite answered, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

¹³ And Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this moment?"

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, "Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants now a days, certain men, that break away from their master.

¹ And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: And he blew a trumpet, and said, "We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: Every man to his tents, O Israel.

¹⁶ So when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them, the people answered the king, saying, "What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: To your tents, O Israel: Now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

¹ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

¹⁰ And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; the Gentiles shall seek it: And His dwelling shall be glorious.

³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

² And he said to him, "God forbid; you shall not die: Behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, except that which he will show me: And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so."

⁸ Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you: Notwithstanding, if there is iniquity in me, slay me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?"

¹³ the LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: But if it please my father to do you evil, then I will disclose it to you, and send you away, that you may go in peace: And the LORD be with you, as he has been with my father. ¹⁴ And you shall not only show me the kindness of the LORD while I yet live, that I do not die: ¹⁵ But you also shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever: No, not when the LORD has cut off the enemies of David, every one, from the face of the earth." ¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies." ¹⁷ And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: For he loved him as he loved his own soul.

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, "You son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own confusion, and to the confusion of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. For this reason send now and fetch him to me, for he shall surely die." ³² And Jonathan answered his father Saul, and said to him, "Why shall he be slain? What has he done?" ³³ And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: By this Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to slay David. ³⁴ So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no meat the second day of the month: For he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

⁴² And Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for as much as both of us have sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD be between me and you, and between my seed and your seed forever.' " And he arose and departed: And Jonathan went into the city.

¹⁶ And Saul's son Jonathan arose, and went into the woods to David, and strengthened his hand in God. ¹⁷ And he said to him, "Fear not: For the hand of Saul my father shall not find you; and you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you; and my father Saul knows that also." ¹⁸ And the two of them made a covenant before the LORD: And David abode in the woods, and Jonathan went to his house.

²¹ And Saul said, "Blessed be you of the LORD; for you have compassion on me.

¹⁶ then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction,

³ and Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

¹ Then David came to Ahimelech the priest at Nob: And Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no man with you?" ² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, 'Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you': And I have appointed my servants to such and such a place. ³ Now therefore, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what there is present." ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, "There is no common bread on hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have at least kept themselves from women." ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, "Truly women have been kept from us for about three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yes, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel." ⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed bread: For there was no bread there but the show-bread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the most chief of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. ⁸ And David said to Ahimelech, "And is there not here on hand spear or sword? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste." ⁹ And the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you slew in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: If you will take that, take it: For there is no other except that here." And David said, "There is none like that; give it to me."

¹ To the chief Musician, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, "David has come to the house of Ahimelech." Why do you boast about yourself in mischief, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. ² The tongue devises mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue. ⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah. ⁶ The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: ⁷ Lo, this is the man that did not make God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. ⁸ But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever. ⁹ I will praise You forever, because You have done it: And I will wait on Your name; for it is good before Your saints.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

¹² If a ruler hearkens to lies, all his servants are wicked.

⁹ In you are men who carry tales to shed blood: And in you they eat upon the mountains: In the midst of you they commit lewdness.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, elders, and all the council sought false witness against Jesus, to put Him to death; ⁶⁰ but found none: Yes, though many false witnesses came, yet they found none. Finally two false witnesses came, ⁶¹ and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.' "

²¹ And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: At his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

²² Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should still yet come to that place. And the LORD answered, "Behold, he has hid himself among the stuff."

⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed bread: For there was no bread there but the show-bread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the most chief of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. ⁸ And David said to Ahimelech, "And is there not here on hand spear or sword? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste." ⁹ And the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you slew in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: If you will take that, take it: For there is no other except that here." And David said, "There is none like that; give it to me."

¹⁵ Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me: Let not the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father: For your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more."

² Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go and smite these Philistines?" And the LORD said to David, "Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah."

⁴ Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, "Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand."

¹² Then David said, "Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" And the LORD said, "They will deliver you up."

⁸ And David inquired at the LORD, saying, "Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them?" And He answered him, "Pursue: For you shall surely overtake them, and without fail recover all."

¹⁵ "Their feet are swift to shed blood:

⁷ Then Saul said to his servants that stood around him, "Hear now, you Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;

⁶ Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, had come to David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, "Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold your servant!

¹ "I am sought by those who did not ask for Me; I am found by those who did not seek Me: I said, 'Behold Me, behold Me', to a nation that was not called by My name.

⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this time?"

⁶⁹ The proud have forged a lie against me: But I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart.

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel: The land is not able to bear all his words.

² And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ a King." ³ And Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, and said, "You say it." ⁴ Then Pilate said to the chief priests and to the people, "I find no fault in this Man." ⁵ But they were all the more fierce, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place."

²⁵ And the men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man that has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel: And it shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel."

¹³ Therefore Saul removed him from himself, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

²⁷ For this reason David arose and went, he and his men, and slew two hundred men of the Philistines; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

⁴ And Jonathan spoke good of David to his father Saul, and said to him, "Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you: ⁵ For he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel: You saw it, and rejoiced: Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?"

³² And Jonathan answered his father Saul, and said to him, "Why shall he be slain? What has he done?"

² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, 'Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you': And I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

¹¹ Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: For in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and I did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.

²³ The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the LORD delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against the LORD's anointed.

²³ For all his judgments were before me: And as for his statutes, I did not depart from them. ²⁴ I also was upright before Him, and have kept myself from my iniquity. ²⁵ Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.

¹¹ If you forbear to deliver those that are drawn to death, and those that are ready to be slain; ¹² if you say, "Behold, we did not know it"; does He that ponders the heart not consider it? And He that keeps your soul, does He not know it? And shall He not render to every man according to his works?

⁸ Open your mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. ⁹ Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

⁵ Did he not say to me, 'She is my sister?' And she, even she herself said, 'He is my brother': In the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this." ⁶ And God said to him in a dream, "Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart; for I also withheld you from sinning against Me: Therefore I did not permit you to touch her.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk: Therefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

¹¹ And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they did not know anything.

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

¹⁶ Having a good conscience; that when they speak evil of you, as of evil-doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. ¹⁷ Indeed it is better, if it is the will of God, that you suffer for well doing, than for doing evil.

¹⁶ The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: Every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

⁴⁴ And Saul answered, "God do so and more also: For you shall surely die, Jonathan."

³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. For this reason send now and fetch him to me, for he shall surely die."

⁴ For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water).

² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.

⁶ And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had showed him the people of Mordecai: Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

¹⁵ As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.

⁵ The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, "The action has gone from me: If you will not make known to me the dream, with its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

¹² For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: Therefore he spoke, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. ²⁰ And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly wroth, and sent forth, and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and inside all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

¹⁹ Moreover when Herod had searched for him, and did not find him, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

¹⁷ But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.

¹¹ And he said, "This will be the manner of the king who shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

⁴⁵ And the people said to Saul, "Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: As the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day." Thus the people rescued Jonathan, so that he did not die.

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: For he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him."

¹ And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

⁵ Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king: And he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

¹³ And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and sought him, and said to him, "O man of God, I implore you, let my life, and the life of these fifty your servants, be precious in your sight. ¹⁴ Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: Therefore let my life now be precious in your sight.

²⁵ And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.

¹⁹ But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.

⁴⁰ And for Aaron's sons you shall make coats, and you shall make for them girdles, and you shall make bonnets for them, for glory and for beauty.

¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

²⁸ And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before Me? And did I give to the house of your father all the offerings made by fire from the children of Israel?

³⁰ For which reason the LORD God of Israel says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before Me forever': But now the LORD says, 'Far be it from Me; for those that honor Me I will honor, and those that despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. ³¹ Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father's house, that there shall not be an old man in your house. ³² And you shall see an enemy in My habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: And there shall not be an old man in your house forever. ³³ And the man of yours, whom I shall not cut off from My altar, shall be to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart: And all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age.

³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that everyone who is left in your house shall come and crouch down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, "Put me, I implore you, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread." ' "

¹² In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: When I begin, I will also make an end. ¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows; because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them. ¹⁴ And therefore I have sworn to the house of Elim that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering forever."

²¹ And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.

³ They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.

¹⁶ For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and you walk in their counsels; that I should make you a desolation, and its inhabitants a hissing: Therefore all of you shall bear the reproach of My people."

³ Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they do not gnaw the bones until the next day.

¹⁰ Which things I also did in Jerusalem: And many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. ¹¹ And I punished them often in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly furious against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

¹⁷ And the city shall be accursed, even it and all that are in it, to the LORD: Only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

²¹ And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

³ Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.' "

⁹ But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatted calves, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: But every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

¹ Then David came to Ahimelech the priest at Nob: And Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no man with you?"

¹¹ Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: And they all came to the king.

³² And at Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,

³² As yet he shall remain at Nob that day: He shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

¹⁴ Therefore a tumult shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: The mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.

¹³ For he that has shown no mercy shall have judgment without mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment.

³³ And the man of yours, whom I shall not cut off from My altar, shall be to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart: And all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age.

¹² And a man of Benjamin ran out of the army, and he came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes torn, and with earth upon his head.

⁶ And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.

⁹ And David knew that Saul secretly practiced mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring here the ephod."

⁷ And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I implore you, bring the ephod here to me. And Abiathar brought the ephod there to David.

²⁵ And Sheva was scribe: And Zadok and Abiathar were the priests:

²⁶ And to Abiathar the priest said the king, Get you to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you are worthy of death: But I will not at this time put you to death, because you bore the ark of the LORD God before David my father, and because you have been afflicted in all in which my father was afflicted. ²⁷ So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest to the LORD; that he might fulfill the word of the LORD, which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yes, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell you. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, "The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and has burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell you. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell on the camels, and have carried them away, yes, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell you.

¹⁹ And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell you.

¹ Then David came to Ahimelech the priest at Nob: And Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no man with you?" ² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, 'Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you': And I have appointed my servants to such and such a place. ³ Now therefore, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what there is present." ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, "There is no common bread on hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have at least kept themselves from women." ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, "Truly women have been kept from us for about three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yes, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel."

²² Yes, for Your sake we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

²⁶ And to Abiathar the priest said the king, Get you to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you are worthy of death: But I will not at this time put you to death, because you bore the ark of the LORD God before David my father, and because you have been afflicted in all in which my father was afflicted.

⁹ Then they shall deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: And you shall be hated by all nations for My name's sake.

²⁸ And I give them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. ²⁹ My Father, which gave them to Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand. ³⁰ I and My Father are one."

²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, 'The servant is not greater than his lord.' If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept My sayings, they will keep yours also.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues: Yes, the time is coming, that whoever kills you will think that he does service to God. ³ And these things they will do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me.

¹² While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name: Those whom You gave Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, except the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

⁹ That the saying might be fulfilled, which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none."

¹ Therefore seeing we also are compassed around with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily entangle us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, ² looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. ³ For consider Him that endured such contradiction from sinners against Himself, lest you be wearied and faint in your minds.
