¹⁴ Now the time we spent from Kades-barne till we came to the valley of Zaret, was thirty eight years; until all the generation of the warriors had fallen, and died out of the camp. As the Lord had, with an oath denounced against them,

¹¹ I solemnly said, They shall not enter into my rest.

⁵ As I have made the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm, I can give it to whom it seemeth good in mine eyes.

⁹ And it shall be for a joy and praise and for a subject of exultation to all the people of the earth who shall hear all the good things which I will do. And they will be struck with awe and remorse for all the good and for all the peace which I will procure for them.

⁴ In the day which is coming to destroy all the Philistines I will destroy also Tyre and Sidon and all the residue of their help. [p] Because the Lord will utterly destroy the remnants in the isles,

¹⁹ inhabitant of Aroer! ask him who is fleeing and making escape, and say, What is the news?

¹⁰ On account of the impious slaughter of thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off forever. ¹¹ From the day that thou didst become an adversary, whenever the Philistines captivated his army, or strangers entered his gates and cast lots on Jerusalem, thou also wast as one of them. ¹² But thou shouldst not have looked on thy brother's day in the day of strangers; nor rejoiced over the children of Juda, in the day of their destruction; nor shouldst thou have vaunted in the day of affliction; ¹³ nor entered people's gates in the day of their distresses. Thou especially shouldst not have beheld their congregation in the day of their destruction, nor joined to fall on their army in the day of their defeat;

¹⁰ He indeed will riot in kings; and petty princes will be his scorn. Of every fortress he will make a scoff and will raise a mount and take it. ¹¹ Then he will change his mind and depart and be pacified. [p] This is the majesty which belongeth to my God.

⁴ For Gaza shall be plundered and Ascalon shall be a waste; and Azotus shall be driven out at noon day; and Accaron shall be rooted out.

⁵ Ascalon shall see and be terrified; so shall Gaza, and be exceedingly pained: Akkaron also; because at her fall she was confounded. And a king shall perish out of Gaza; and Ascalon shall no more be inhabited.

¹⁶ Thus let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven.

¹² Whatsoever therefore you would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them, for this is the law and the prophets.

¹⁰ But whatever city you enter, when they do not receive you, go out into the streets thereof and say, ¹¹ The very dust of this city of yours which cleaveth to us, we wipe off for you: nevertheless, know this, that the reign of God hath come nigh unto you. ¹² Now I say to you, the condition of Sodom will be more tolerable on that day than the condition of that city.

¹⁵ Then he said to them, Take heed and be upon your guard against covetousness. For in what affluence soever a man may be, his life doth not depend on his possessions.

²⁶ and hath made of one blood the whole nation of men to inhabit the whole face of the earth, having marked out times previously arranged in order, and the boundaries of their habitation,

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

¹⁷ For the scripture saith to Pharaoh, "I have raised thee up for this purpose that by thee I may display my power; and that my name may be celebrated throughout all the earth." ¹⁸ Well then, he sheweth mercy to whom he pleaseth, and hardeneth whom he pleaseth, ¹⁹ wilt thou then say to me, Why doth he yet find fault, for who hath resisted his will? ²⁰ But who art thou, O man, who enterest into a dispute with God? Shall the thing formed say to him who formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? ²¹ Hath not the potter power over the clay to make, out of the same lump, one vessel for honour, and another for dishonour? ²² What if God willing to manifest his wrath and make known his power, did with much long suffering, bear with the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, ²³ to the end that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy which he had previously prepared for glory

¹⁷ Render to none evil for evil. Be provident in regard to things good in the sight of all men.

⁵ But with the greater part of them God was not well pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

¹⁵ Take heed therefore how circumspectly you walk, not as unwise, but as wise,

¹⁵ that you may be blameless and sincere, spotless children of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, amongst whom shine ye forth as lights in the world,

⁵ Walk in wisdom towards them who are without, redeeming the time.

⁷ For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us: that we did not behave ourselves irregularly among you, ⁸ nor eat any man's bread for nothing; but with labour and toil worked night and day, that we might not be burthensome to any of you;

⁸ Let not your hearts be refractory as at Bitterness as in the day of the temptation in the wilderness; ⁹ Where your fathers tried me; they proved me, though they saw my works. Forty years. ¹⁰ For which cause I was incensed with that generation; And said, They do always err with the heart, And have not known my ways: ¹¹ So in mine indignation I solemnly said, "They shall not enter into my rest." ¹² Take heed, brethren, that there be not in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; ¹³ but while this today is proclaimed, that none of you may be rendered obstinate by the deceitfulness of sin ¹⁴ [for we are made associates of the Christ if we retain the beginning of this confidence firm to the end] ¹⁵ exhort one another daily by its being said, "Today since you have heard his voice let not your hearts be refractory as at Bitterness." ¹⁶ For some hearers provoked him; but did they not all come out of Egypt by Moses? ¹⁷ Now, against whom was he incensed forty years? Was it not against them who sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he solemnly say that they should not enter into his rest, but to them who were disobedient. ¹⁹ So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

⁵ Now I desire once for all to remind you of this which you knew, That the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, destroyed afterwards them who did not believe:

⁹ behold I give thee some of the synagogue of satan, who say they are Jews and are not; but do lie. Behold I will make them come, and worship at thy feet, and know that I have loved thee.
