⁴⁹ on this account indeed said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill, and others they will persecute,

² to give a knowledge of wisdom and instruction; the perception of the words of prudence; ³ the interpretation of sentences; a discernment of true justice; and to direct judgment, ⁴ that he might give sagacity to the innocent; and to the youth knowledge and discretion: ⁵ for by attending to them a wise man will become wiser; and a man of understanding will possess a ride of government ⁶ and will understand a proverb and dark speech and the sayings of the wise and parables.

¹ As for thee thou art to proclaim wisdom; that understanding may attend thee. ² For she is on the lofty summits; and hath taken her stand in the middle of highways. ³ For at the gates of the mighty she hath taken a seat, and at the entrance thereof chanteth her song. ⁴ "To you, men, I call, and utter my voice to the sons of men. ⁵ Ye who are innocent learn discretion: and ye who are uninstructed give attention. ⁶ Hearken to me, for I will speak solemn things; and with my lips disclose things which are right. ⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; lying lips are indeed abominable in my sight. ⁸ All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; they have nothing crooked; nothing deceitful in them. ⁹ They are all plain to men of understanding: and right to them who find knowledge. ¹⁰ Receive instruction in preference to silver, and knowledge rather than fine gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than precious stones: and no costly thing is equal to it in value. ¹² I wisdom have inhabited counsel and knowledge; and I have made an appeal to understanding.

¹ Wisdom hath built herself a house, and fixed underneath it seven pillars. ² She hath slain her victims. She hath mixed her wine for the cup and furnished her table. ³ She hath sent out her servants, and with a loud proclamation hath given an invitation to her entertainment, saying,

⁶ and the rest seized his servants, insulted, and slew them.

³⁴ For this, behold I am about to send you prophets, wise men and Scribes: and some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth; from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say to you, All these things will come upon this generation.

¹⁶ You will indeed be delivered up by parents, and brothers, and kinsmen, and friends. And some of you will be put to death. ¹⁷ And on the account of my name you will be hated by all.

⁴⁷ and that for his name reformation and remission of sins should be proclaimed to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

² They will excommunicate you. Indeed a time is coming, when whosoever killeth you will think he doth an act of religious worship to God.

⁸ But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and you shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

⁵⁷ At which they screamed aloud, and stopped their ears and rushed upon him with one accord.

³ Saul was making havock of the congregation. Entering into houses and dragging out men and women, he committed them to prison.

¹ As for Saul he was still breathing out threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord. Having gone to the chief priest, ² he asked letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, that if he should find any of this way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

¹ Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to afflict some of the congregation, ² and slew with the sword James the brother of John.

⁴ one who persecuted this sect to death, binding and delivering into custody both men and women, ⁵ as even the chief priest and the whole Sanhedrim can witness for me; from whom when I had received letters to the brethren at Damascus, I went with a design to bring those also who were there, in chains to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

²⁰ and when the blood of thy witness Stephen was shed, I was standing by and gladly consenting to the slaughter of him, and watching the clothes of them who were killing him.

¹⁰ And this I did at Jerusalem: and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received this authority from the chief priests. And when they were put to death, I gave assent. ¹¹ And in all the synagogues many a time did I, by torments, urge them to blaspheme. And being transported to madness against them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.

²⁴ but to them who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God;

³⁰ And it is owing to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who hath been made to us wisdom from God, namely, righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption,

²⁴ Of the Jews I five times received forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Thrice I have been shipwrecked. In the deep I spent a whole night and day.

¹¹ and he hath given some to be apostles, and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors, and teachers,

³ in which are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
