⁶ and do not oppress the stranger and orphan and widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place, nor go after strange gods to your hurt: ⁷ then will I cause you to dwell in this place; [in the land which I gave to your fathers] from age to age. ⁸ But if you continue to trust in lying words from which you can derive no benefit; ⁹ and commit murder, and adultery and steal and swear to a falsehood, and burn incense to Baal; and when you have gone after strange gods which you did not know; ¹⁰ you, because of your calamities, have then come and stood before me, in the house which is called by my name, and said, "We have been restrained from committing these abominations;"

⁷ In thee they reviled father and mother; and in thee practised injustice against the stranger. They oppressed the widow and the orphan;

³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;

⁷ and dashed their sandals against the heads of the poor; and turned aside the way of the meek; and a son and a father went in unto the same handmaid. That they might profane the name of their God,

⁴ [p] Hear this, I beseech you, ye who every morning oppress the needy, and by your tyranny drive the poor from the land, saying, ⁵ "When will the new moon be over that we may buy? And the sabbaths, that we may open store? to make the measure small, and the weight heavy, and to make the balance uneven, ⁶ that we may purchase the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, when from every kind of product we shall have made gain.

² They coveted fields and plundered orphans and tyrannised over houses; they plundered a man and his household; a man and his inheritance;

⁸ Indeed this people of mine have openly risen up for enmity. In direct opposition to his peace they have even stripped off his skin, that the extreme horror of war might destroy hope.

² As for them who hate good and seek evil, who tear off the skin from these and the flesh from their bones:

²² But I say to you, the condition of Tyre and Sidon will in a day of judgment, be more tolerable than yours. ²³ And thou Capernaum, which hast been exalted to heaven, shalt be brought down to the mansion of the dead; for if the miracles, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. ²⁴ But I say to you, that the condition of the land of Sodom will, in a day of judgment, be more tolerable than thine.

¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter.

²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean. ²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption. ²⁸ In like manner you also appear outwardly to men to be righteous; but you are inwardly full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

⁴⁰ who devour the families of widows, and make long prayers for a disguise. Such shall receive greater condemnation.

¹² Now I say to you, the condition of Sodom will be more tolerable on that day than the condition of that city. ¹³ Alas for thee, Chorazin! Alas for thee, Bethsaida! for if the miracles which have been performed in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

¹ by which myriads of the people being drawn together, so as to trample upon one another, he took occasion to say to his disciples, Above all, things beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy;

⁴⁷ Now that servant who knew his master's will, and did not keep himself ready, nor act agreeably to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes; ⁴⁸ but he who did not know it, and did things deserving chastisement, shall be beaten with few. For to whom much is given, of him much will be required. And the more a man is entrusted with, the more will be demanded from him.

⁵ For never did we at any time use flattering words, as you know; nor a pretext for covetousness, God is witness;

² For the men will be selfish, avaricious, vain, haughty, addicted to slander, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, ³ void of natural affection, perfidious, false accusers, intemperate, fierce, destitute of love for goodness, ⁴ betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, ⁵ having a form of religion but denying the power of it. From such turn away; ⁶ for of such sort are they who insinuate themselves into families, and lead captive weak women laden with sin, led aside by various lusts,

¹⁶ they make a profession of knowing God, but with their works they deny him; being abominable, and disobedient, and lost to every good work.

¹ Be not, my brethren, many teachers; as you know that we shall receive a severer sentence;
