³ Thereupon Pilate asked him, saying, Thou art the king of the Jews? And he, in reply, said to him, It is as thou sayest.

Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! ³⁹ Upon this, some of the Pharisees who were in the crowd, said to him, Teacher, rebuke these disciples of thine. ⁴⁰ In reply to which, he said to them, I tell you, If these keep silence, those stones would exclaim.

⁷⁰ Thereupon they all said, Thou then art the son of God? And he said to them, It is as you say.

³⁸ For over him there was an inscription, written in Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew. This is The King Of The Jews.

⁴⁹ In answer to this, Nathaniel said to him, Rabbi, thou art the son of God. Thou art the king of Israel.

³³ Then Pilate went again into the hall, and called Jesus and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews? ³⁴ Jesus answered him, Dost thou say this from thyself? Or have others told it thee concerning me? ³⁵ Pilate answered him, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation, even the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me. What hast thou done? ³⁶ Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my attendants would have fought to prevent my being delivered up to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not of this world. ³⁷ Thereupon Pilate said to him, Thou art a king then? Jesus answered, It is as thou sayest, I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to bear testimony for the truth. Every one who is of the truth hearkeneth to my voice.

³ and said, Hail! king of the Jews! When they gave him slaps on the cheek.

¹⁹ Now Pilate had written a label and put it on the cross, and the writing was this, Jesus The Nazarine, The King Of The Jews. ²⁰ This label therefore many of the Jews read; for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and the inscription was in Hebrew and Greek and Latin. ²¹ Wherefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Write not The king of the Jews, but, that he said, I am the king of the Jews.
