¹ Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea; and Herod, tetrarch of Galilee; and his brother Philip, tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis; and Lysanias, being tetrarch of Abilene ² in the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, a word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness, ³ and he went into all the country along the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation for a forgiveness of sins. ⁴ As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord: make the roads for him straight. ⁵ Let every valley be filled up; and every mountain and hill levelled; and let the crooked be made a straight road, and the rough ways, smooth. ⁶ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God." ⁷ Therefore to the multitudes who came out to be baptized by him, he said, Offspring of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the impending wrath? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of this reformation: and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ⁹ Now, indeed, the axe is at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which doth not produce good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And when the people asked him, saying, What then shall we do? ¹¹ He in reply, said to them, Let him who hath two coats impart to him who hath none: and let him who hath provisions, do the same. ¹² And when publicans came to be baptized, and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? ¹³ He said to them, Exact no more than what is enjoined you. ¹⁴ And when soldiers asked him, saying, And what shall we do? ²² And Noe did all that the Lord God commanded him;

⁴ They have a venom like that of a serpent; like that of a deaf adder which stoppeth its ears; ⁵ which will not hearken to the voice of charmers; nor to the charm administered by the wise.

¹ And there shall spring up a shoot from the root of Jessai; even from that root shall spring up a blooming shoot; ² and the spirit of God will rest upon him; a spirit of wisdom and understanding; a spirit of counsel and majesty; a spirit of knowledge and piety:

¹ [M] THE SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor, to heal them who are brokenhearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives, and a recovery of sight to the blind: ² to proclaim an acceptable year of the Lord and a day of retribution. To comfort all who are mourning; ³ that to the mourners in Sion may be given, glory instead of ashes, oil of joy to the mourners, robes of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called generations of righteousness, a plant of the Lord for glory.

She hath done a good work for me. ⁷ For you have the poor always with you and can, when you please, do them good; but me you have not always. ⁸ She hath done what she could. She hath come beforehand to anoint my body for its embalment.

⁵ Let your conduct be free from avarice. Be content with what you have; for he hath said, "I will never leave thee, nor will I ever forsake thee." ⁶ So that we may say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper, I will not fear what man can to do me."

⁹ Let the brother who is in low circumstances glory in his exaltation;

²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and father is this, to take the oversight and care of orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep one's self unspotted from the world.

¹⁵ Suppose a brother or a sister be naked, or in want of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you should say to them, go in peace: be warmed, and be fed to the full; and you do not give them the things necessary for the body, is this any advantage? ¹⁷ Just so it is in respect to this belief, if it hath not works; being by itself it is dead. ¹⁸ One indeed may say, thou hast belief, and I have works. Shew me thy belief by thy works. As for me, I will shew thee my belief by my works. ¹⁹ Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well. The demons also believe and tremble. ²⁰ But wouldst thou, vain man, know that belief without works is dead? ²¹ Was not Abraham, our father, justified by works when he offered up his son Isaak on the altar? ²² Thou seest that his belief co-operated with his works, and by his works his belief was perfected. ²³ And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, "Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him for righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God. ²⁴ You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by belief only. ²⁵ In like manner also, was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, having secreted the messengers, and sent them out another way? ²⁶ For as the body without spirit is dead, so belief without works is dead also.

⁴ to whom you are come as to a living stone, by men indeed rejected, but with God chosen and precious,

²⁰ made proclamation at the time they were disobedient when the long suffering of God was waiting once for all in the day of Noe, while the ark was a building, in which a few, that be eight souls, made their escape during the flood;

¹⁷ For he was receiving honour and glory from God the Father, when a voice was uttered to him, from the transcendent glory, "This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased." ¹⁸ This voice we ourselves actually heard uttered from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.

⁵ and if he spared not the old world, but preserved eight persons, including Noah, the proclaimer of righteousness, when he brought a deluge on the world of ungodly men

⁸ He who practiseth sin is of the devil, because the devil sinneth from the beginning; for this [purpose] the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

¹⁷ Whosoever hath worldly substance, and seeth his brother in want, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

²⁰ If anyone saith, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For how can he who doth not love his brother whom he hath seen, love God, whom he hath not seen?

¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven. "Now is come salvation and the power and reign of our God and the authority of Christ himself; for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, he who accused them before our God day and night;

⁶ Because they poured out the blood of thy saints and prophets, therefore thou hast given them blood to drink, for they deserve it.
