¹ It happened as he was walking through cornfields on a sabbath called, second prime, that his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and having rubbed out the grains with their2 hands, began to eat. ² Upon which some of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye that which is not lawful on sabbath days? ³ Thereupon Jesus addressing them, said, Have you never read what David did, when he and his attendants were hungry? ⁴ How he went to the house of God, and took the presence loaves and ate thereof and gave to his attendants, which none but the priests are allowed to eat. ⁵ Then he told them that the son of man is Lord even of the sabbath. ⁶ It happened also on another sabbath, when he went to the synagogue and taught, that there was a man there, whose right hand was withered. ⁷ And the Scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would perform a cure on the sabbath day, that they might find matter of accusation against him. ⁸ Now he knew their thoughts. Therefore when he had said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise and stand in the midst; and he had risen, and was standing there; ⁹ Jesus said to them, Let me ask you what is allowable on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy"? ¹⁰ Then having looked around on them all, he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so. And his hand was restored sound as the other. ¹¹ Upon this they were filled with madness, and spoke one to another what they should do to Jesus. ¹² Now about that time he went out to the mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in a place set apart for prayer to God. ¹³ And when it was day, he called together his disciples, and out of them chose twelve, whom he named Apostles ¹⁴ Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew, his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, ¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James, son of Alpheus, and Simon, surnamed Zelotes, ¹⁶ Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, even he who was a traitor. ¹⁷ And having come down with them, he stopped in a plain, with a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him, and to be cured of their diseases ¹⁸ Even they who were infested by unclean spirits were also cured. ¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him, because power went forth from him, and healed all. ²⁰ Then lifting up his eyes on his disciples, he said, Happy ye who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours! ²¹ Happy ye, who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied! Happy ye, who weep now; for you will laugh! ²² Happy are you, when men will hate you; even when they will discard and reproach you, and expose your name as infamous on the account of the son of man; ²³ rejoice on that day and leap for joy; for behold your reward in heaven is great; for thus their fathers treated the prophets. ²⁴ But alas! for you who are rich, for you are receiving your consolation. ²⁵ Alas for you who are filled; for you shall hunger. Alas for you who laugh now; for you shall mourn and weep. ²⁶ Alas for you, when all men speak well of you; for thus their fathers did to the false prophets. ²⁷ But I charge you, my hearers, Love your enemies. Do good to them who hate you. ²⁸ Bless them who curse you; and pray for them who spitefully abuse you. ²⁹ To him who smiteth thee on one cheek, present also the other. And from him who taketh thy mantle, withhold not thy coat. ³⁰ Give to every one who asketh thee. And from him who taketh away thy goods, do not demand them back. ³¹ And as you wish men to do to you, do ye even so to them. ³² If you indeed love them who love you, what thanks are you entitled to. For even sinners love those who love them. ³³ And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks are you entitled to? For even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if you lend to them from whom you hope to receives what thanks are you entitled to. For even sinners lend to sinners, that they may receive as much in return. ³⁵ But love your enemies; and do good; and lend without any mistrust, and your reward will be great. And you will be the children of the Most High Because he is kind, even to the ungrateful and malignant; ³⁶ be ye therefore merciful, even as your Father is merciful. ³⁷ Furthermore, judge not, that so you may not be judged. Condemn not, that so you may not be condemned. Forgive; and you shall be forgiven. ³⁸ Give; and to you will be given; into your lap there shall be given good measure, pressed down and shaken and running over. For with the same measure with which you mete to others, you shall have measure returned to you. ³⁹ Then he spake a parable to them; Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? ⁴⁰ A scholar is not above his teacher. But every one will be instructed as his teacher is. ⁴¹ Now why beholdest thou the mote which is in thy brother's eye, and perceivest not the splinter which is in thine own eye? ⁴² Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Hold, brother, Let me take out the mote which is in thine eye, not considering that there is a splinter in thine own eye? Hypocrite, first take the splinter out of thine own eye, and then thou wilt see clearly to take out the mote which is in thy brother's eye. ⁴³ That indeed is not a good tree which beareth bad fruit; nor is that a bad tree which beareth good fruit. ⁴⁴ For every tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns; nor grapes from a bramble bush. ⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good. And the bad man out of the bad treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is bad. For from the overflowing of the heart the mouth speaketh. ⁴⁶ Now why do you call me, master, master, when ye do not what I command? ⁴⁷ With regard to every one who cometh to me, and hearkeneth to my words, and doth them, I will tell you to whom he is like. ⁴⁸ He is like a man building a house, who digged deep and laid a foundation on the rock. And when a flood came, the current beat against that house, but could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock. ⁴⁹ But he who hath heard and hath not practised, is like a man who built a house on the ground, without a foundation, against which the current beat impetuously, and presently it fell. And great was the ruin of that house.

¹⁵ Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. And from the first day you shall remove all leaven out of your houses. Whoever shall eat leaven from the first to the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from among Israel.

⁷ Now the first day shall be a holy, set day for you. You shall do no sacrificial service,

¹⁰ Speak to the 10 children of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them, When you are come into the land which I give you, and are about to reap the harvest thereof, you shall bring a sheaf, as the first fruits of your harvest, to the priest, ¹¹ and he shall offer up the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted for you; On the morrow after the first day, the priest shall offer this up.

¹⁵ That from the morrow of these sabbaths; from the day on which you offer up the dedicated sheaf, you shall reckon for yourselves seven whole weeks,

⁹ Seven weeks thou shalt number for thyself; from thy first beginning to put the sickle to the harvest thou shalt begin to number the seven weeks.

²⁵ If thou comest into thy neighbour's field of standing corn, thou mayst gather ears with thy hands; but thou shalt not put a sickle into thy neighbour's field of standing grain. And if thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, thou mayst eat grapes, till thy soul is satisfied, but thou shalt not put any into a vessel.

¹ About this time, as Jesus was walking through corn fields on the sabbath days, his disciples were hungry and began to pluck some ears, and eat them. ² When the Pharisees saw this they said to him, See Thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on a sabbath. ³ Whereupon he said to them, Have you not read, what David did when he was hungry, and they who were with him? ⁴ How he went to the house of God and ate the presence loaves, which it was not lawful for him or his company to eat, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have you not read in the law, that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath and are blameless? ⁶ Now I say to you, There is one here greater than the temple. ⁷ And if you had known the meaning of this,. "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice," you would not have condemned the innocent. ⁸ For the son of man is lord even of the sabbath.

²³ At another time, as he was passing through corn fields, on the sabbath days, it happened that his disciples, as they passed along, began to pluck the ears. ²⁴ Whereupon the Pharisees said to him, See! Why are they doing what is not lawful, on the sabbath days?" ²⁵ And he said to them, Did you never read what David did when he was in a strait; and he and his company were hungry? ²⁶ How he went to the house of God in the days of Abiathar, the high priest, and ate the presence loaves, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave thereof to his attendants? ²⁷ Moreover he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. ²⁸ So that the son of man is lord even of the sabbath.

¹⁰ And if a man deliver to his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast to keep, and it be hurt or die, or be carried off by an enemy unknown to any one,

¹⁵ Six days thou shalt perform works, but on the seventh day are the sabbaths, a rest holy to the Lord. Whoever shall do any work on the seventh day shall be put to death.

² Six days thou shalt perform works; but on the seventh there shall be a rest, holy sabbaths, a rest to the Lord; whoever doth work on it let him be put to death.

³² When the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the sabbath day. ³³ And they who found him gathering wood on the sabbath day, brought him before Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation of the children of Israel; ³⁴ and they committed him to custody, for it had not been determined what should be done to him. ³⁵ Whereupon the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Let the man be put to death. Let all the congregation stone him with stones.

¹³ If on account of the sabbaths thou restrain thy foot from doing thy pleasure on that holy day; and call the sabbaths delightful, dedicated to God; and wilt not lift up thy foot for any work; nor utter a word in anger from thy mouth;

² When the Pharisees saw this they said to him, See Thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on a sabbath.

² Why do thy disciples transgress the doctrine of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.

²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel.

²⁴ Whereupon the Pharisees said to him, See! Why are they doing what is not lawful, on the sabbath days?"

³³ Then they said to him, Why do, the disciples of John fast often and make supplications; and in like manner those of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

⁷ And the Scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would perform a cure on the sabbath day, that they might find matter of accusation against him. ⁸ Now he knew their thoughts. Therefore when he had said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise and stand in the midst; and he had risen, and was standing there; ⁹ Jesus said to them, Let me ask you what is allowable on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy"?

⁹ Upon which the man was instantly well, and took up his couch and walked about. Now there was a sabbath on that day; ¹⁰ therefore the Jews said to him who was cured, It is a sabbath: It is not lawful for thee to carry the couch. ¹¹ He answered them, He who made me well, even he said to me, Take up thy couch and walk about.

¹⁶ And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him, because he did these things on a sabbath.

¹⁴ Now it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. ¹⁵ Therefore the Pharisees asked him again, how he got sight. And he said to them, He put clay on mine eyes, and I washed them and see. ¹⁶ Thereupon some of the Pharisees said; That man is not from God, because he doth not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man do such miracles? So there was a dissention among them.

³ Now therefore hast thou fives loaves at hand? Give me what thou hast ready. ⁴ And the priest in reply said to David, I have no common bread at hand. Because there is none but the holy bread; if thy servants have but kept themselves from women they may eat it. ⁵ And David in answer to the priest, said to him, Of a truth we have kept ourselves from women these three days. When I set out on the journey, all the servants were purified [though the journey was on secular affairs] because they were to be holy this day, on account of my provision for it. ⁶ So Abimelech the priest gave him the presence loaves, because he had no other, but only those loaves which were taken from the presence of the Lord, that fresh bread might be put in their place on the day he took them.

³ Whereupon he said to them, Have you not read, what David did when he was hungry, and they who were with him? ⁴ How he went to the house of God and ate the presence loaves, which it was not lawful for him or his company to eat, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have you not read in the law, that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath and are blameless?

⁴ In reply to which he said to them, "Have you not read that the Creator at the beginning made them a male and a female?"

¹⁶ and said to him, Hearest thou what these say? Jesus saith to them, Yes. Have you never read, "From the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise."

⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes."

³¹ But in respect to the revival of the dead. Have you not read what was spoken to you: by God, saying,

²⁵ And he said to them, Did you never read what David did when he was in a strait; and he and his company were hungry? ²⁶ How he went to the house of God in the days of Abiathar, the high priest, and ate the presence loaves, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave thereof to his attendants?

¹⁰ Have you never read this portion of scripture, "The stone which the builders rejected, was the very one for the head of the corner.

²⁶ Now with respect to the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spake in the bush to him, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob.

⁵ And you shall take fine flour, and make it into twelve loaves, every loaf shall consist of two tenths; ⁶ and you shall lay them in two piles, six loaves in each pile, on the pure table before the Lord. ⁷ And on each pile you shall lay pure frankincense, and salt. They shall be set before the Lord for loaves of remembrance. ⁸ On the day of the sabbaths they shall be set continually before the Lord, in the sight of the children of Israel, as an everlasting covenant; ⁹ and they shall be for Aaron and his sons. And they shall eat them in a holy place; for they are most holy. This shall be their peculiar due, for ever, from those things sacrificed to the Lord.

⁵ Blind men see, and lame walk. Lepers are cleansed and deaf hear. Dead are raised and poor have glad tidings proclaimed to them. ⁶ And happy is he to whom I shall not prove a stumbling block. ⁷ And as they were going away, Jesus began this discourse to the people concerning John, What did you go out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed with soft raiment? Behold they, who wear delicate apparel, frequent the palaces of kings.

²⁷ Moreover he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.

⁷ Then there came a cloud which overshadowed them, and from the cloud came a voice, saying, This is my Son, the Beloved; hearken to him.

¹⁰ I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, like the sound of a trumpet,

⁴ And when king Jeroboam heard the words of the man of God, who cried against the altar, he stretched forth his hand from the altar, saying, Seize him: and behold his hand, which he stretched forth against him withered so that he could not draw it back to him.

¹⁷ ye feeders of vanities who have forsaken the sheep. There is a sword against his arms, and against his right eye. Shall his arm be quite withered, and his right eye utterly put out?

²³ Then Jesus went through all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the reign and curing every disease, and every malady among the people.

⁹ Having departed thence, he went into their synagogue ¹⁰ and lo! there was a man there who had his hand withered. And they asked him with a design to accuse him; "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days?" ¹¹ And he said to them, What man is there among you, who having one sheep, if it fall into a pit on the sabbath days, will not take hold of it and lift it up? ¹² Of how much greater value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the sabbaths. ¹³ Then he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it out. And his hand was restored sound as the other. ¹⁴ Thereupon the Pharisees went out and conspired against him that they might destroy him.

¹ And when he again went to the synagogue, there was a man there who had a withered hand; ² and they watched him to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, that they might accuse him. ³ Thereupon he saith to the man who had the withered hand. Stand up in the midst. ⁴ Then he saith to them. Is h lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill? But they were silent. ⁵ Then looking round on them with indignation, being grieved for the blindness of their mind, he saith to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. Accordingly he stretched it out, and his hand was restored whole as the other. ⁶ Upon this the Pharisees went out, and immediately held a consultation with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

¹⁶ And when he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went according to his custom to the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read.

³¹ When he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbath days,

¹⁰ When he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath day,

¹³ and laid his hands on her. And instantly she stood upright and glorified God. ¹⁴ Upon which the ruler of the synagogue, to express his indignation because Jesus cured on the sabbath day, addressed the people and said, There are six days on which work should be done: come therefore on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.

³ thereupon Jesus, addressing the teachers of the law, and the Pharisees, said, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

³ in which lay a great multitude of infirm persons, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

¹⁶ Thereupon some of the Pharisees said; That man is not from God, because he doth not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man do such miracles? So there was a dissention among them.

³² The sinner watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to kill him; ³³ but the Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor suffer him to condemn him when he is judged.

¹² But they who seek my life pressed forward: and they who seek my ruin spake vanities. All the day long they studied deceits.

²¹ and who by reasoning cause men to err. But as for all them who reprove in the gates they will indeed lay a stumbling block, because of their having turned aside the righteous one for the unrighteous,

¹⁰ Because I heard the whisper of many collected from all around saying, "Join in conspiracy and let us all conspire against him; ye men who are his friends watch his thoughts; if he can be deceived, we shall then prevail over him and take our revenge on him."

⁵⁹ And the chief priests and the elders, even the whole Sanhedrim, sought false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, ⁶⁰ but found it not. Though many false witnesses came forward, they did not find it. At last two false witnesses came,

² and they watched him to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, that they might accuse him.

⁵³ Now while he was saying these things to them, the Scribes and the Pharisees took occasion to urge him vehemently, and provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying snares for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him;

¹⁴ Upon which the ruler of the synagogue, to express his indignation because Jesus cured on the sabbath day, addressed the people and said, There are six days on which work should be done: come therefore on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.

¹ It happened also on a sabbath day, when he went to eat at the house of one of the chiefs who were Pharisees, and they were watching him, ² behold there was before him a man, who had a dropsy; ³ thereupon Jesus, addressing the teachers of the law, and the Pharisees, said, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? ⁴ But they were silent. Then taking the man by the hand, he healed him. And having dismissed him, ⁵ he continued his discourse to them, and said, Who amongst you, if his ass or his ox fall into a pit, will not instantly pull it out on the sabbath day? ⁶ And to this they could not make reply.

²⁰ Therefore, having watched him diligently, they sent to him spies who should feign themselves to be righteous men, that they might lay hold of some word of his, in order to deliver him up to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.

¹⁰ therefore the Jews said to him who was cured, It is a sabbath: It is not lawful for thee to carry the couch. ¹¹ He answered them, He who made me well, even he said to me, Take up thy couch and walk about. ¹² Thereupon they asked him, Who is the man who said to thee, take up thy couch and walk about? ¹³ But he who was cured did not know who it was; for as there was a crowd in the place, Jesus had glided away. ¹⁴ After this Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold thou art made well. Sin no more, lest something worse befall thee. ¹⁵ The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him. ¹⁶ And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him, because he did these things on a sabbath.

²⁶ Then they said to him again, What did he do to thee? How did he open thine eyes? ²⁷ He answered them, I have told you already. Did you not hear? Why do you desire to hear it again? Have you indeed a mind to be his disciples? ²⁸ Upon this they reviled him and said, Thou art a disciple of his; but as for us, we are disciples of Moses. ²⁹ We know that God spake to Moses; but as for this man, we know not whence he is.

⁹ And now, Solomon, my son, know thou the God of thy fathers, and serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searcheth all hearts and knoweth every thought. If thou seek him, he will be found by thee; but if thou forsake him, he will at last forsake thee.

¹⁷ As I know, O Lord, that thou triest hearts and lovest righteousness, I have with singleness of heart freely offered all these things, and have now seen with joy all thy people who are here present freely offering to thee.

² I know that thou canst do all things, and that with thee nothing is impossible.

²¹ for he knoweth the secrets of the heart?

⁴ He will shine out, and shall not be broken until he hath established judgment on the earth. In his name therefore let the nations trust.

⁴ But Jesus knowing their thoughts, said, Why do ye harbour evil thoughts in your hearts?

²² Thereupon Jesus, knowing their surmises, addressed them, saying, Why reason ye in your hearts?

²⁵ And because he had no need that any one should testify of man, for he himself knew what was in man;

⁴ I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work.

¹⁷ He saith to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved that he said to him, the third time, "Lovest thou me," and he said to him, Lord thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Feed my sheep.

²⁴ But I make no account of any of these, nor is this life of mine so much my concern as to finish with joy my course; even the office which I have received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the glad tidings of the favour of God.

²⁶ For the king is acquainted with these things, to whom therefore I speak with freedom. For I am persuaded that none of these things have escaped his notice. For this hath not been done in a corner.

²⁸ which is to them indeed a manifestation of destruction, but to you, of salvation. Now with respect to this from God

¹³ There is indeed no creature concealed from his sight. All things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹ Christ therefore having suffered in flesh for us, arm ye yourselves with this reflection, that he who hath suffered in flesh hath been stopped from sin,

²³ and I will slay her children with death; and all the congregations shall know, that I am the searcher of reins and hearts, and will give to every one of you according to your works.

¹² Of how much greater value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the sabbaths. ¹³ Then he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it out. And his hand was restored sound as the other.

⁴ Then he saith to them. Is h lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill? But they were silent.

⁵⁶ For the son of man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. So they went to another village.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you observeth the law. Why do you seek to kill me? ²⁰ The people answered and said, Thou art possessed by a demon; Who seeketh to kill thee? ²¹ In reply to which Jesus said to them, I did one work and you all express wonder at it. ²² Moses gave you the law of circumcision [not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs,] and you circumcise a man on a sabbath. ²³ If a person receiveth circumcision on a sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on a sabbath I cured a man whose whole body was diseased.

⁶ said the Lord again, Put thy hand in thy bosom. So he put his hand in his bosom; and when he drew his hand out of his bosom, his hand was like snow. ⁷ Then the Lord said to him again, Put thy hand in thy bosom. So he put his hand in his bosom, and when he drew it out of his bosom, it was again restored to the colour of its flesh.

⁶ Then king Jeroboam said to the man of God, Entreat the favour of the Lord thy God and let my hand be restored to me. So the man of God entreated the favour of the Lord, and he restored the king's hand to him; and it was as it had been before.

²⁰ He sent forth his word and healed them; and delivered them from their destructions.

⁵ Then looking round on them with indignation, being grieved for the blindness of their mind, he saith to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. Accordingly he stretched it out, and his hand was restored whole as the other.

⁸ Jesus saith to him, Rise; take up thy couch and walk about.

¹ Why did nations rage? And tribes meditate vain things? ² The kings of the earth combined; and the chiefs assembled together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, [saying]

³ There is this evil in every thing done under the sun, that one event happeneth to them all, so that the heart of the children of men being filled with evil there is an instability in their heart during their life, and it followeth them to the dead.

¹⁴ Thereupon the Pharisees went out and conspired against him that they might destroy him. ¹⁵ But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from that place; and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

⁴⁵ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees, when they heard his parables, knew that he spake of them:

²⁸ At hearing this, all that were in the synagogue were filled with wrath,

¹ After this Jesus travelled about in Galilee, for he did not chuse to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

⁴⁷ Whereupon the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled the Sanhedrim, and said, What are we doing? Because this man doth many miracles,

¹⁵ So, having ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrim, they conferred among themselves,

¹⁹ But Peter and John in reply to them, said, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye.

³³ At hearing this they were cut to the heart, and consulted to put them to death.

⁵⁴ At hearing this they were cut to the heart and gnashed their teeth at him.

¹¹ And in all the synagogues many a time did I, by torments, urge them to blaspheme. And being transported to madness against them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.

²⁴ and Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him till the morning. ²⁵ And when he saw that he could not prevail against him he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh became numb, in wrestling with him. ²⁶ And he said to him, Let me go: for the dawn approached. But Jacob said I will not let thee go unless thou bless me.

² my God, shall I cry to thee by day, and thou not listen, and by night, and thou not hear me?

¹⁵ Let death come upon them; Let them go down alive to the mansion of the dead: because there was wickedness in their dwellings; in the midst of them. ¹⁶ As for me, I cried to God, and the Lord heard me. ¹⁷ Evening and morning and at noon I will declare and proclaim; and he will hearken to my voice.

³ With words of hatred they encompassed me about; and fought against me without provocation. ⁴ They traduced me for my love; but I prayed,

¹⁰ Now when Daniel knew that the decree was passed, he went home and the windows in his upper chamber towards Jerusalem were opened for him, and three times a day, kneeling down on his knees, he prayed and gave thanks before his God as he had done heretofore.

⁶ But as for thee, when thou wouldst pray, retire to thy closet, and having shut the door pray to thy father who is in secret, and thy father who seeth in secret will reward thee openly.

²³ And when he had dismissed the multitudes he went up, by himself, to the mountain, to pray And in the course of the eve, he was there alone, ²⁴ and the vessel was now in the midst of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. ²⁵ And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

³⁵ And in the morning, when the night was far advanced, he arose and went out, and retired to a solitary place, and there prayed;

⁴⁶ And when he had sent them away, he retired to the mountain to pray.

³⁴ he saith to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even to death. Stay here and watch. ³⁵ Then having advanced a little further, he prostrated himself on the ground, and prayed, that if it were possible this hour might pass from him. ³⁶ And he said, Abba, father, all things are possible to thee. Take away this cup from me. Nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.

² Continue in the constant exercise of prayer, watching there in with thanksgiving;

⁷ He, [who in the days of his flesh, having, with a strong cry and tears, offered up prayers and supplications to him who was able to save him from death, and being hearkened to, did, from a reverential awe notwithstanding his being a son, learn obedience from what he suffered;

³⁶ And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them because they were fainty and forlorn, like sheep without a shepherd.

²⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to you, With respect to you who have followed me, at the renovation, when the son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

¹³ Then he goeth up to the mountain, and calleth to him whom he would, and they went up to him. ¹⁴ And he appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them to make proclamation; ¹⁵ and to have power to cure diseases, and expel demons; ¹⁶ namely, Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, ¹⁷ and James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James, [these he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder] ¹⁸ and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Chananite, ¹⁹ and Judas Iscariot, who delivered him up. Upon their going into a house,

⁷ he calleth to him the twelve, and began to send them forth, by two and two, and gave them power over the unclean spirits;

³⁰ Now the apostles come together again to Jesus, and when they had given him a full account both of what they had done, and what they had taught,

¹ When he, having called together the twelve disciples, gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure diseases; ² and was sending them to proclaim the reign of God, and to heal the sick;

⁴⁹ on this account indeed said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill, and others they will persecute,

³⁰ that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

¹³ And when they came in, they went up into the upper room, where Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James, son of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James, usually made their abode.

²⁰ built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the corner stone,

¹¹ and he hath given some to be apostles, and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors, and teachers,

¹ Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly invitation, consider attentively this apostle and chief priest of our profession, [namely] Christ Jesus ² that you may remember the predictions of the holy prophets, and the injunction of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour;

¹ And a great sign was seen in heaven, a woman clad with the sun, and the moon was under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars;

²⁰ Rejoice over her, O heaven! and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

¹⁴ And the wall of the city had twelve foundations on which were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

¹⁸ Now as Jesus was walking along the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a drag net into the sea; for they were fishermen;

²¹ And passing on he saw other two brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the vessel with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.

³ Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James the son of Alpheus and Lebbeus called Thaddeus,

¹⁹ And going thence a little further, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were in the vessel, mending the nets.

²⁹ Immediately on their going out of the synagogue they went to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

³⁷ Then he permitted none to accompany him, but Peter and James, and John the brother of James.

² Six days after this, Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up, privately by themselves, to a high mountain, and was transfigured in their presence.

³³ Then he taketh with him Peter, and James and John, and being seized with agonizing horror and distress of mind,

⁸ Upon seeing this, Simon Peter prostrated himself at the knees of Jesus, and said, Depart from me, for I, O Lord, am a sinful man.

¹⁰ And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. Then Jesus saith to Simon, Be not afraid; henceforth1 thou shalt be employed in catching men.

⁴⁰ Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. ⁴¹ He first findeth his brother Simon, and saith to him, We have found the Messias, [the meaning of which is the Christ] [the anointed] ⁴² and brought him to Jesus. And Jesus, having looked earnestly on him, said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonas. Thou shalt be called Cephas [the meaning of which is the same as that of Peter] [a rock.]

⁴⁵ Philip finding Nathaniel, saith to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets have written, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

⁵ Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming to him, saith to Philip, Whence can we buy bread to feed these people.

⁸ One of his disciples, namely Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him,

⁸ Philip saith to him, Master shew us the Father, and it sufficeth.

¹⁵ So when they had breakfasted, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him, Yes, Lord, Thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Feed my lambs. ¹⁶ Again he saith to him a second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith to him, Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Tend my sheep. ¹⁷ He saith to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved that he said to him, the third time, "Lovest thou me," and he said to him, Lord thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Feed my sheep. ¹⁸ Verily, verily I say to thee, When thou wast young, thou didst gird thyself and walk where thou wouldst; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another will gird thee and carry thee whither thou wouldst not. ¹⁹ Now this he said to him, signifying by what sort of a death he should glorify God. And having said this, Jesus saith to him, Follow me. ²⁰ Now when Peter turned about and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, [even him who at the supper reclined on his breast and said, Master, who is he that is about to deliver thee up] ²¹ Peter seeing him, saith to Jesus, Lord, and this one, what in respect to him? ²² Jesus saith to him, If I will that he stay till I come, what is that to thee? ²³ Follow thou me. This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that this disciple should not die. But Jesus did not say to him, he should not die; but, If I will that he stay till I come, what is that to thee? ²⁴ This is the disciple who testifieth concerning these things and hath written these things. And we know that his testimony is true.

² and slew with the sword James the brother of John.

¹ Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them who have obtained a like precious belief with us, in the saving goodness of our God and saviour Jesus Christ,

⁹ When Jesus was going thence he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the custom house; and he saith to him, Follow me. Whereupon he arose and followed him.

³ Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James the son of Alpheus and Lebbeus called Thaddeus, ⁴ Simon the Chananite and Judas Iscariot, even he who delivered him up.

¹⁴ Now as he passed on he saw Levi, the son of Alpheus, sitting at the custom house, and saith to him, Follow me. Whereupon he arose and followed him.

¹⁸ and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Chananite,

²⁷ And after this he went out and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, Follow me.

¹⁶ Upon this Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go that we may die with him.

²⁴ Now Thomas, one of the twelve, he who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

¹³ And when they had done speaking, James answered and said, Men, brethren, hearken to me,

¹⁹ But I did not see any other of the apostles, save James the brother of the Lord.

⁹ even James, and Cephas, and John, those eminent pillars, knowing the favour granted to me, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should be for the nations, and they for the circumcision,

¹ James, "a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad, Greeting.

¹⁴ Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests, ¹⁵ and said, What will you give me, and I will deliver him up to you. And they weighed to him thirty shekels of silver: ¹⁶ And from that time he watched an opportunity to deliver him up.

³ Then Judas, who had delivered him up, finding that he was condemned, repented and carried back the thirty shekels of silver to the chief priests and the elders, ⁴ saying, I have sinned in having betrayed innocent blood To which they replied, What is that to us? Look thou to that. ⁵ Thereupon he threw down the money in the temple, and withdrew, and went and strangled himself.

⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, Have I not chosen you twelve? Yet one of you is a spy. ⁷¹ Now he spake of Judas Iscariot, son of Simon; for he thought of delivering him up though he was one of the twelve.

²² Judas [not the Iscariot] saith to him, Master, How is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?"

¹⁶ said, Men, brethren, It was necessary that this scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit predicted, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to them who laid hold on Jesus; ¹⁷ because he was numbered with us, and had a part of this service allotted him ¹⁸ [Now this man indeed had purchased! a field with the reward of his iniquity, and, falling on his face, had burst asunder, and all his bowels gushed out; ¹⁹ and this was so generally known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that the field is called in their language, Akeldama, that is field of blood] ²⁰ for it is written in the book of Psalms, "Let his fold be desolate, and let there be no inhabitant therein. And, His office let another take;"

²⁵ to take the share of this ministration and apostleship which Judas abandoned to go to his own place,"

¹ Jude a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James; to the called, who are sanctified by God the father, and preserved by Jesus Christ:

³ who pardoneth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

¹⁷ He helped them out of the way of their transgression: for on account of their iniquities they were brought low. ¹⁸ Their soul abhorred all manner of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. ¹⁹ Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction, and he saved them from their distresses. ²⁰ He sent forth his word and healed them; and delivered them from their destructions.

²³ Then Jesus went through all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the reign and curing every disease, and every malady among the people. ²⁴ And the fame of him spread through all Syria; and they brought to him all their sick, seized and tormented with various distempers"demoniacs, and lunatics and paralytics, and he cured them. ²⁵ And great multitudes followed him from Galilee, and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea, and from the banks of the Jordan.

²¹ Alas for thee Chorazin! Alas for thee Bethsaida! For had the miracles, which have been performed in you, been done in Tyre and Sidon they would have repented long ago in sack cloth and ashes.

¹⁵ But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from that place; and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

¹⁴ And when Jesus landed he saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

²¹ Then Jesus having left that place, withdrew into the confines of Tyre and Sidon.

⁷ Again 'Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, and from Judea, ⁸ and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from the banks of the Jordan. They also around Tyre and Sidon, having heard what he did, flocked to him in crowds. ⁹ Then he gave orders to his disciples that a boat should attend him, because of the multitude, that they might not throng him. ¹⁰ For he healed many; so that they who had maladies, pressed in upon him to touch him. ¹¹ And the unclean spirits; when they saw him, prostrated themselves before him, and cried out, saying, Thou art the Son of God; ¹² though he strictly charged them not to make him known.

²⁴ Then he arose and went from that place to the confines of Tyre and Sidon. And having entered the house he desired that none should know. But he could not be concealed. ²⁵ For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell at his feet ²⁶ [now the woman was a Greek, a native of Syrophoenicia] and intreated him to expel the demon out of her daughter. ²⁷ But Jesus said to her, Let the children first be satisfied; for it is not seemly to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs. ²⁸ To which she, in reply, said to him, True, sir; but still the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs. ²⁹ Thereupon he said to her, For this saying, Go home. The demon is gone out of thy daughter. ³⁰ So, going home, she found the demon was gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed. ³¹ Then, quitting the confines of Tyre and Sidon, he came again to the sea of Galilee, along the borders of Decapolis.

¹⁵ So his fame spread more and more, and great multitudes flocked to hear him, and to be healed of their infirmities by him.

¹² Now about that time he went out to the mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in a place set apart for prayer to God.

²² And lo! a Chananitish woman from those quarters came out and cried with a loud voice, saying to him, Have pity on me, O my lord, Son of David; my daughter is grievously afflicted by a demon.

¹⁵ O sir, have pity on my son; for he is afflicted with an epilepsy, and suffereth grievously. For he often falleth into the fire and often into the water.

¹⁶ But when the multitude also of the cities around flocked to Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were tormented with unclean spirits, who were all cured;

⁸ So Moses prayed to the Lord for the people, and the Lord said to Moses, Make thee a serpent, and put it on a standard; and it shall come to pass that when a serpent biteth a man, every one who is bitten shall live by looking at that. ⁹ So Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it on a standard, and it came to pass that when a serpent bit a man, he looked up to that serpent, and lived.

²¹ and it happened that while they were burying a man, behold they saw the band; upon which they threw the man into Elisha's tomb, and when he sunk down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.

²⁰ And lo! a woman who had been twelve years afflicted with an efflux of blood, came behind and touched the tuft of his mantle. ²¹ For she said within herself, If I can only touch his mantle, I shall be cured.

³⁶ and intreated him that they might only touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were perfectly cured.

¹⁰ For he healed many; so that they who had maladies, pressed in upon him to touch him.

³⁰ Thereupon Jesus conscious of the power which had gone forth from him, turning about immediately, in the crowd, said, Who touched my clothes?

⁵⁶ And wherever he entered towns, or cities, or villages, they laid the sick in the streets, and begged that they might but touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were cured.

²² Then he cometh to Bethsaida, and they bring a blind man to him, and intreat him to touch him.

¹⁷ One day when he was teaching, and some Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting by, and the power of the Lord was displayed in curing the sick;

⁴⁵ Thereupon Jesus said, Who touched me? And when all denied, Peter and they who were with him, said; Master, the crowds are thronging and pressing thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me? ⁴⁶ But Jesus said, Some one hath touched me, for I perceived a power going forth from me.

¹⁴ But as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the son of man be lifted up, ¹⁵ that whosoever believeth in him may not perish; but have everlasting life.

¹⁵ so that in every street they brought out the sick and laid them on beds and couches, that the shadow of Peter as he went along might overshadow some of them. ¹⁶ But when the multitude also of the cities around flocked to Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were tormented with unclean spirits, who were all cured;

¹² so that handkerchiefs and aprons were carried from his body to them who were sick, and the diseases were removed from them, and evil spirits went out of them.

⁹ but you being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people peculiarly set apart that you may publish the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

⁸ He lifteth up the needy from the ground; And raiseth the beggar from a dunghill; To seat them among a people's princes; And he causeth them to possess a throne of glory.

¹⁶ Better is the little which a righteous man hath, than the abundant wealth of sinners.

⁷ Who raiseth the distressed from the ground, and lifteth the needy from a dunghill: ⁸ to seat him with princes; with the chiefs of his people.

¹⁹ A man of a gentle spirit with humility is better than he who divideth spoils with scorners.

¹⁹ and the distressed shall exult with joy because of the Lord; and the disconsolate among men shall be filled with joy.

¹⁵ Thus saith the Most High, who on earth inhabiteth eternity, who is Holy among holies; whose name is THE MOST HIGH; who at rest in the holies giveth patience to the humble, and life to them who are of a contrite heart; ¹⁶ I will not contend with you forever, nor will I be continually angry with you, for from me spirit is to proceed and I have made every breathing soul.

² For all these things my hand hath made: and all these things are mine saith the Lord. Upon whom therefore will I look down, but upon him only who is humble and quiet, and who trembleth at my words?

¹² and I will then expect in thee a meek and lowly people;

¹¹ And on that day it shall be broken; and the Chananites, the sheep that are kept for me, shall know for what cause there is a word of the Lord.

² and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, ³ Happy the poor in spirit; for the kingdom of the heavens is theirs. ⁴ Happy they who mourn; for they shall be comforted. ⁵ Happy the meek; for they shall inherit the land. ⁶ Happy they who hunger and thirst for righteousness; for they shall be satisfied. ⁷ Happy the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. ⁸ Happy the pure in heart; for they shall see God. ⁹ Happy the peace makers; for they shall be called children of God. ¹⁰ Happy they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for the kingdom of the heavens is theirs. ¹¹ Happy are ye when men will revile and persecute you, and accuse you falsely of every evil thing on my account. ¹² Rejoice and exult triumphantly; for great will be your reward in heaven: for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

⁵ Blind men see, and lame walk. Lepers are cleansed and deaf hear. Dead are raised and poor have glad tidings proclaimed to them.

⁴⁹ Then, stretching out his hand towards his disciples, he said, Behold my mother, and my brethren! ⁵⁰ for whoever will do the will of my father who is in heaven, the same is my brother and sister and mother.

³⁴ Then the king will say to them on his right, Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom which hath been prepared for you from the formation of the world:

³⁴ Then looking round on them who sat about him, he saith, Behold my mother and my brethren! ³⁵ For whosoever will do the will of God, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

¹⁸ The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor; to heal them who are broken hearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives; and a recovery of sight, to the blind; to set at liberty the bruised;

²⁰ Then lifting up his eyes on his disciples, he said, Happy ye who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours! ²¹ Happy ye, who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied! Happy ye, who weep now; for you will laugh! ²² Happy are you, when men will hate you; even when they will discard and reproach you, and expose your name as infamous on the account of the son of man; ²³ rejoice on that day and leap for joy; for behold your reward in heaven is great; for thus their fathers treated the prophets. ²⁴ But alas! for you who are rich, for you are receiving your consolation.

³² Fear not, little flock. Because it hath pleased your Father to give you that kingdom,

²⁸ Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there, when you shall see Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves cast out.

¹⁵ Upon hearing this, one of the guests said to him, Happy is he who eateth bread in the kingdom of God.

²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

⁴⁸ Hath any of the chief priests believed in him, or any of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ But this multitude, which know not the law, are accursed.

²² establishing and confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith. And because we must enter into the kingdom of God through many afflictions;

²⁶ For observe, brethren, this call of you, that there are not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many of illustrious birth; ²⁷ but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise; and the weak things of the world God hath made choice of to put to shame the strong ²⁸ and the ignoble of this world, and those of no account, God hath chosen; nay, the very nothings, to put a stop to the operation of the things which are, ²⁹ that no flesh might boast in his presence.

²¹ So let no one boast in men; for all things .are yours: ²² whether Paul. or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come, all are yours, ²³ and you are Christ's and Christ is God's.

¹⁰ as sorrowful, yet still rejoicing; as poor, yet enriching many; as having nothing, yet possessing all things.

² that in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy, though their poverty was very great, abounded for the richness of their liberality

⁹ For you know the bounty of our Lord Jesus Christ, that rich as he was, he for your sakes became poor, that through his poverty you might become rich.

⁶ for your sakes, you indeed became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having embraced the word in much affliction, with the joy of a holy spirit;

⁵ there is a clear evidence of the righteous judgment of God that you are accounted worthy of the kingdom of God for which you, actually suffer;

⁹ Let the brother who is in low circumstances glory in his exaltation; ¹⁰ and him who is rich, in his humiliation, because he shall pass away like a flower of the grass.

¹² Happy the man, who endureth a trial! because having stood the test, he will Jas 1:receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them who love him.

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he hath promised to them who love him?

⁹ "I know thy works, and thine affliction, and thy poverty, [though thou art rich] and the slander of them who say they are Jews, and are not, but are a synagogue of satan.

¹⁷ Upon this Abraham fell on his face and smiled, and said in his heart, To him who is in his hundredth year shall a son be born? and shall Sarah bring forth in her ninetieth year?

⁶ And Sarah said, The Lord hath made laughter for me; for whoever shall hear will rejoice with me.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning. Am I every night to bedew my bed and water my couch with my tears? ⁷ Mine eye is troubled with indignation: I am grown old among all mine enemies. ⁸ Away from me, all ye workers of iniquity. For the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping;

¹⁵ But as for me, let me appear righteous before thee; let me be satisfied with a display of thy glory.

⁷ The Lord is my helper and my protector: on him my heart relied, and I am helped. My flesh also is revived, that with cheerfulness I may praise him.

¹¹ Thou didst turn my mourning into joy; thou didst rend in pieces my sackcloth and gird me with gladness, ¹² that my glory might sound thy praise; and that I might not be absorpt in grief. Lord, my God, to thee I will give thanks for evermore.

As the hart panteth for fountains of water, so panteth my soul for thee, God. ² My soul hath thirsted for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? ³ My tears were my food day and night, when they said to me continually, Where is thy God?

¹ A Psalm by David, when he was in the wilderness of Idumea. O GOD, my God! to approach thee, I rise early. My soul thirsted for thee. For thee [I thirst] with all the vehement desire with which my flesh pines in a land, desert, trackless and without water. ² Thus have I appeared to thee in the sanctuary; that I might see thy power and thy glory. ³ Because thy kindness is better than life; my lips shall continually praise thee. ⁴ Thus will I bless thee while I live: and in thy name I will lift up my hands. ⁵ Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: that my joyful lips may praise thy name.

⁴ Happy he, whom thou hast chosen and taken to thyself! He shall dwell in thy courts. Let us be satisfied with the good things of thy house: thy temple is holy.

⁹ because he hath satisfied the longing soul; and filled the hungry with good things.

¹³⁶ Mine eyes poured down streams of water, because I did not keep thy law.

¹ A Song of the steps. When the Lord brought back the captivity of Sion; we were like them who are comforted. ² Then was our mouth filled with joy, and our tongue with exultation; then did they say among the nations, "The Lord hath done great things for them."

⁵ Let them who sow with tears reap with rapture. ⁶ They went step by step and wept sowing their seed; but let them come tripping with joy, carrying their sheaves.

⁶ I spread forth my hands to thee; for thee my soul thirsted like land without water.

² It is better to go to a house of mourning than to a house of feasting. As that is the end of every man therefore the living will improve his understanding. ³ Grief is better than laughter; for by a sadness of countenance a heart may be made better.

¹ And on that day thou wilt say, I bless thee, Lord; because, though thou wast angry with me, thou hast turned away thy wrath and pitied me. ² Behold! my God is my Saviour, I will trust in him and not be afraid. Because the Lord is my glory and my praise; and hath become unto me salvation;

⁶ then will the Lord of Hosts make provision for all the nations. On this mount they shall drink gladness:

¹⁹ Because a holy people will dwell in Sion, and Jerusalem with weeping cried, "Have mercy upon me." Therefore he will have mercy upon thee. When he heard the sound of thy cry, he hearkened to thee.

³ for I will give water in their thirst to them who are travelling in a desert. I will put my spirit on thy seed, and my blessings on thy children; ⁴ and they shall spring up like grass among water, and like a willow by the side of a flowing stream.

⁹ saying to them who are in bonds, Go forth; and to them who are in darkness, "Come into light." In all the highways they shall be fed, and there shall be pasture for them in all the paths. ¹⁰ They shall not hunger nor shall they thirst, nor shall the burning wind nor the sun smite them; but he who hath compassion on them will comfort them and lead them to bursting springs of water.

¹ HO! ye who are thirsting, come to water! And ye who have no money, come buy and eat, without money and without price, wine and the choicest bread. ² Why are you expending money and labour for that which will not satisfy? Hearken to me and you shall eat good things; and your soul will be regaled with delicacies.

¹⁷ Because of sin I grieved him a little while and smote him and turned away my face from him; and he was grieved and went his ways sorrowing; ¹⁸ I have seen his ways and healed him, and comforted him, and given him true consolation;

¹ [M] THE SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor, to heal them who are brokenhearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives, and a recovery of sight to the blind: ² to proclaim an acceptable year of the Lord and a day of retribution. To comfort all who are mourning; ³ that to the mourners in Sion may be given, glory instead of ashes, oil of joy to the mourners, robes of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called generations of righteousness, a plant of the Lord for glory.

¹³ therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold my servants shall eat; but you shall be hungry: behold my servants shall drink; but you shall be thirsty: behold my servants shall rejoice; but you shall be ashamed: ¹⁴ behold my servants shall triumph with joy: But you shall scream for sorrow of heart, and howl for anguish of spirit.

¹⁰ Rejoice Jerusalem! and sing praises therein, all ye who love her! Be exceedingly joyful with her, all ye who mourn for her!

¹ O that my head were water! and mine eyes a fountain of tears! That I might weep day and night for this people of mine; for the slain of the daughter of my people!

¹⁷ But if you will not hearken, your soul shall weep in secret for your haughtiness; and tears shall gush from your eyes; because the flock of the Lord is destroyed.

⁹ They set out with weeping; but I will bring them up with consolation, causing them to rest at fountains of water in a straight road; and in it they shall not be led astray, for I am become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first born.

¹³ Then shall virgins rejoice in the assembly of youths; the elders also shall be filled with joy; for I will turn their mourning into joy and make them glad. ¹⁴ I will enlarge and satisfy the soul of the priests the sons of Levi. And my people shall be regaled with my good things. Thus said the Lord,

¹⁸ I have heard the voice of Ephraim moaning, "Thou hast chastised me and I have been chastised. I like a bullock was uninstructed, bring me back that I may return; for thou art the Lord my God. ¹⁹ For after my captivity I reformed and after I gained knowledge I groaned for my days of shame and shewed thee that I was ashamed of my youth." ²⁰ Ephraim is a beloved son; my darling child; since my words are in him I will surely remember him. For this cause I have been anxious for him, I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord.

²⁵ For I have satisfied with drink every thirsty soul; and every soul that was hungry I have filled.

¹⁶ Now shall they escape who escape from among them? When they shall be on the mountains, I will indeed slay all, every one for his iniquities.

⁴ and said to him, Go through the midst of Jerusalem and put a mark on the forehead of those men who are sighing and sorrowing for all the transgressions which are committed among them;

⁴ Happy they who mourn; for they shall be comforted.

⁶ Happy they who hunger and thirst for righteousness; for they shall be satisfied.

⁵³ He hath filled the hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty.

²⁵ Alas for you who are filled; for you shall hunger. Alas for you who laugh now; for you shall mourn and weep.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, If thou hadst known the bounty of God, and who it is who saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

³⁵ Then Jesus said to them, I am the bread of that life. He who cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he who believeth in me, shall never thirst.

³⁷ It being now the last the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. ³⁸ He who believeth in me; as the scripture hath said, Out of his belly will flow streams of living water.

³⁵ Jesus wept.

²⁰ Verily, verily, I say to you, "You will weep and mourn; but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful; but your sorrow will be turned into joy. ²¹ A woman in travail hath sorrow, because her time is come; but when the child is born, she no more remembereth her anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

¹ I speak the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience, with a holy spirit, bearing joint witness for me ² that I have great grief and incessant sorrow in my heart ³ [for I even I myself wished the followers of Christ to be devoted to destruction,] for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh,

¹¹ Even at this very moment we are hungry and thirsty and naked and buffeted, and are wandering about and weary,

⁴ who comforteth us in all our affliction, to the end that we may be able to comfort them who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves have been comforted by God. ⁵ Because in proportion as the sufferings of the Christ abound towards us, so by means of Christ our consolation also aboundeth; ⁶ and whether we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectually wrought out by a patient enduring of the same sufferings which we suffer; or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation;

¹⁰ For godly sorrow operateth to produce a reformation for salvation, never to be repented of; but the sorrow of this world worketh death. ¹¹ For behold! this very thing; your being affected with a godly sorrow, what solicitude it hath wrought in you! nay, what apologies! what indignation! what fear! what longing desire! what zeal! what avengement! By your whole conduct you have shewn yourselves to be clear in this matter.

²⁷ In toil and fatigue, in watchings many a time, with hunger and thirst; in fastings many a time, with cold and nakedness.

¹⁰ I feel therefore a complacency in weaknesses, in reproaches, in difficulties, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ; for when I am weak, then am I strong.

² Count it, my brethren, all joy when you fall into divers trials, ³ knowing that the trial of your faith operateth to produce patience. ⁴ Let patience then have a full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, deficient in nothing.

⁶ in whom you exult with joy though you are now for a little while, if it be necessary, distressed with divers trials; ⁷ in order that your faith, which hath stood the test and is much more precious than gold which is of a perishable nature though tried by fire, may be found praise worthy, and honourable, and glorious, at the manifestation of Jesus Christ, ⁸ whom without knowing him personally you love; in whom though you do not now see him, yet you believe, and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorified joy,

¹⁶ They shall no more hunger, nor shall they thirst any more; nor shall the sun dart upon them; nor any scorching heat:

³ And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, Behold the tabernacle of God with men! and he will dwell with them; and they will be his people; and God himself will be with them their God.

⁵ yet they say, "Keep at a distance from me; come not near me, for I am clean." This is a smoke which causeth my wrath; a fire is kindled by it every day.

⁵ hear the decisions of the Lord; ye who tremble at his word, say, "O our brethren; [to them who hate you and are abominable, that the name of the Lord may be glorified and appear to their joy, when they shall be ashamed]

¹⁸ and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and the nations.

²² And you will be hated by all men on the account of my name. But he who persevereth to the end shall be saved.

³⁹ He who hath found his life shall lose it. But he, who shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.

⁹ Now look to yourselves. For they will deliver you up to councils and synagogues. You will be scourged and brought before governors and kings, for my sake, to bear testimony to them. ¹⁰ For the glad tidings must be first proclaimed to all the nations. ¹¹ But when they bring you to deliver you up, be not solicitous beforehand what to say; nor premeditate; but whatever shall be suggested to you on the occasion, speak that: for it is not you, who speak; but the Holy Spirit. ¹² Now brother will deliver up brother to death: and a father, a son: and children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death: ¹³ and you will be hated by all men on account of my name. But he who persevereth to the end shall be saved.

¹⁵ So having, cast him out of the vineyard they slew him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁷ And on the account of my name you will be hated by all.

⁷ The world cannot hate you: but it hateth me, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.

²² This his parents said, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had now agreed that if any one acknowledged Jesus to be the Christ, he should be excommunicated. ²³ For this cause his parents said, He is of age; ask him. ²⁴ Then they called a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner. ²⁵ Upon this he answered and said, If he be a sinner, I know not. One thing I know, that I was blind, and now I see. ²⁶ Then they said to him again, What did he do to thee? How did he open thine eyes? ²⁷ He answered them, I have told you already. Did you not hear? Why do you desire to hear it again? Have you indeed a mind to be his disciples? ²⁸ Upon this they reviled him and said, Thou art a disciple of his; but as for us, we are disciples of Moses.

³⁴ They answered and said to him, Thou wast altogether born in sin, and dost thou teach us? And they excommunicated him.

⁴² Nevertheless when several of the chief's believed in him, but on account of the Pharisees did not acknowledge it, that they might not be excommunicated,

¹⁸ If the world hate you, consider that it hated me before you. ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. Now because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ²⁰ Remember the word which I spake to you. The servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my word, they will also keep yours. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

² They will excommunicate you. Indeed a time is coming, when whosoever killeth you will think he doth an act of religious worship to God.

¹⁴ I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world as I am not of the world.

¹⁶ I will shew him what he must suffer for my name.

²² Now till that Word they had continued listening to him; then they raised their voice saying, Away with such a one from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live.

⁵ For having found this man to be a pest and a mover of sedition, among all the Jews, through the whole empire, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes,

¹⁰ We are fools on the account of Christ; but you are prudent in Christ: We are weak; but you are strong: you are honourable; but we are despised: ¹¹ Even at this very moment we are hungry and thirsty and naked and buffeted, and are wandering about and weary,

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? [I speak with an excess of folly] I am more so; more abundant in labours; far surpassing in stripes; more frequent in imprisonments, often in deaths. ²⁴ Of the Jews I five times received forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Thrice I have been shipwrecked. In the deep I spent a whole night and day. ²⁶ On journeys I have been frequently in dangers from rivers; in dangers from robbers; in dangers from my country men; in dangers from foreign nations; in dangers in cities; in dangers in a wilderness; in dangers at sea; in dangers among false brethren:

²⁸ which is to them indeed a manifestation of destruction, but to you, of salvation. Now with respect to this from God ²⁹ because this hath been granted to you for Christ, not only to believe in him but also to suffer for him and you are engaged in the same conflict as that in which you saw me and now hear that I am engaged,

¹⁴ For you, brethren, became imitators of the congregations of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. Because you suffered from your countrymen the same treatment as they did from the Jews ¹⁵ [from those indeed who slew the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and persecuted us, and who please not God, and are in opposition to all men,

¹¹ my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. ¹² Indeed all who wish to live holy in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

¹⁹ For this is pleasing, if from a conscientious regard to God one endureth grief suffering wrongfully. ²⁰ For what glory is it, if when you commit a fault and are beaten, you suffer patiently? But if when acting well you meet with ill usage, and bear it, this is well pleasing in the sight of God.

¹⁴ But if you should even suffer on the account of righteousness, you are happy. Be not terrified with the fear of them, nor dismayed;

¹² Beloved, be not surprized at the fiery trial among you, which is come upon you to try you, as if some strange thing had befallen you: ¹³ but inasmuch as you partake of the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice; that at the manifestation of his glory you may indeed rejoice with exceeding great joy. 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ you are happy; because the spirit of the glory, even the spirit of God resteth on you. On their part indeed it is reviled, but on your part it is glorified.

¹⁵ For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or a malefactor, or as a usurper of authority; ¹⁶ and if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God in this respect.

¹⁶ And as the ark was entering the city of David, Melchol the daughter of Saul looked out at a window, and saw king David dancing, and playing before the Lord, and despised him in her heart.

⁴ so that when Jezabel smote the prophets of the Lord, Abdiou took a hundred men who were prophets, and hid them by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.

² Jezabel sent to Elias, and said, As sure as thou art Elias, and I Jezabel, God do so to me and more also, if by this time to-morrow I do not make thy life like the life of one of them.

¹⁰ To which he replied, I have been very zealous for the Lord Almighty, because the children of Israel hath forsaken thee. They have demolished thy altars and slain thy prophets with the sword. And I alone am left and they seek my life to take it.

²⁰ And Achab said to Elias, Hast thou found me, my enemy? To which he replied, I have found thee. Because thou hast sold thyself to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to wrath,

⁸ And the king of Israel said to Josaphat, There is a certain man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him; for he never speaketh good of me; but evil; one Michaias, son of Jemblaa. And Josaphat king of Juda said, Let not the king speak so.

²⁷ and tell Joas, the ruler's son, to put him in ward and feed him with the bread of affliction, and water of affliction, till I return in peace.

³¹ And he said, God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha shall stand on him this day.

¹⁶ But they continued to deride his messengers, and to despise his words, and insult his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord ascended against his people; until there was no remedy.

²⁶ and turned and apostatised from thee, and cast thy law behind their backs: Nay, they slew thy prophets who testified against them to turn them to thee; and committed great provocations.

⁶ Then will the lame bound like a hart; and the stammering tongue will speak plain. Because water is burst forth in the desert, and torrents in a thirsty land;

³⁰ In vain have I smitten your children, you did not receive instruction: a sword devoured your prophets, like a ravening lion; and you were not terrified.

¹² Rejoice and exult triumphantly; for great will be your reward in heaven: for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

¹ Take heed not to practise your righteousness before men in order to be observed by them; otherwise you have no reward from your father who is in heaven. ² Therefore when thou dost an act of charity, sound not a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may be extolled by men. Verily I say to you, they have their reward.

³⁵ But the tenants seizing his servants, beat one and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants in greater number than the first, and they treated them in the same manner.

³¹ So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of them who killed the prophets. ³² As for you then, fill up the measure of your fathers. ³³ Serpents! brood of vipers! how can you escape the punishment of hell? ³⁴ For this, behold I am about to send you prophets, wise men and Scribes: and some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth; from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say to you, All these things will come upon this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! how often have I desired to gather thy children even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; but you would not!

⁴¹ And soon as Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb: and Elizabeth was filled with a holy spirit,

⁴⁴ For behold! soon as the sound of thy salutation reached mine ear, the babe within me leaped for joy.

³⁵ But love your enemies; and do good; and lend without any mistrust, and your reward will be great. And you will be the children of the Most High Because he is kind, even to the ungrateful and malignant;

⁸ and leaping up, he stood; then walked and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

⁴¹ Thereupon they went from the presence of the Sanhedrim, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

⁵¹ O stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears Ye do always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? Indeed they have slain them who prophesied concerning the coming of that Righteous one, of whom you have now become the betrayers and murderers:

¹⁰ said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. Upon which he leaped up and walked.

³ And not only so, but we boast also in our tribulations, as we know that tribulation operateth to produce patience;

²⁴ Now I rejoice in these sufferings of mine for you, and am in my turn making up in my flesh the remainders of the sufferings of the Christ, for his body, namely, the congregation

⁵ there is a clear evidence of the righteous judgment of God that you are accounted worthy of the kingdom of God for which you, actually suffer; ⁶ since it is just with God to retribute affliction to them who afflict you; ⁷ and to you who are afflicted, rest with us at the manifestation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels,

¹² If we suffer, we shall indeed reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us.

⁷ I have maintained the good combat. I have finished the course; I have kept the faith. ⁸ As to what remaineth, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, not only to me, but to all who have loved his glorious appearance.

⁶ Now without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing; for he who cometh to God must believe that he existeth, and that he is the rewarder of them who diligently seek him.

²⁶ accounting the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he had an eye to the reward.

³² And what shall I say more? For the time would fail me to speak of Gideon, and Barak, and Sampson, and Jephthae of David and Samuel, and the prophets, ³³ who by faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, ³⁴ quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were strengthened from weakness, became mighty in battle, repelled armies of aliens. ³⁵ Women received their dead children, by a restoration of them to life. As for others, some were tortured, not expecting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection; ³⁶ and others received the trial of mockings, and scourgings, besides bonds and imprisonments. ³⁷ They were stoned; they were sawn asunder; they were tempted; they were slain with the sword; they wandered about in sheep skins, in goats skins, destitute, afflicted, tormented, ³⁸ [of whom the world was not worthy] wandering in deserts, and mountains, and dens, and caves of the earth. ³⁹ Though these all received a testimonial by means of their belief, they did not obtain the promise,

¹⁰ Be not terrified at what thou art about to suffer. Behold the devil will soon cast some of you into prison, that you may be tried; and ye will have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life. ¹¹ Let him who hath an ear hear what the spirit saith to the congregations. "He who overcometh shall not be hurt by the second death."

¹⁷ Let him who hath an ear hear what the spirit saith to the congregations. To him who overcometh I will grant to eat of the manna which was laid up; and I will give him a white stone, and on that stone a new name written, which no one knoweth but he who receiveth it.

²⁶ As for him who overcometh, and keepeth my works to the end, to him I will give power over the nations,

⁵ He who overcometh shall be clothed with white raiment, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father, and before his angels.

¹² Him who overcometh I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [the new Jerusalem which cometh down out of heaven from my God] and mine own new name.

⁷ He who overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God and he shall be my son:

⁷ Why do the wicked live and grow old, abounding in wealth? ⁸ Their crops are to their wish, and their children before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses flourish and they have no dread; and a scourge from the Lord is not upon them. ¹⁰ Their kine bring not forth untimely births, but go their time safely, and cast not their calves. ¹¹ They abide continually like a flock, and their little ones frolick about them. ¹² They take up the psaltery and kithara, and are charmed with the sound of the song; ¹³ and having spent their life in festivity, they are composed to rest in the peaceful grave. ¹⁴ Yet he saith to the Lord, Depart from me, I desire not to know thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him: and what the advantage, that we should wait on him?

⁶ Some put confidence in their power: and some boast of the abundance of their wealth. ⁷ A brother is not redeemed. Is a man to redeem himself?

¹⁶ Fear not when a man groweth rich, nor when the glory of his house is increased. ¹⁷ For when he dieth he can carry nothing away: nor will this glory of his descend with him. ¹⁸ Because during this life his soul shall be blessed; let him praise thee when thou doest him a benefit. ¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; he shall never see light.

³ for I envied the unrighteous; when I saw the prosperity of sinners. ⁴ For there is no lifting up of eyes in their death: and in their affliction they have support. ⁵ They are not in trouble like other men; nor with other men to be scourged. ⁶ Therefore haughtiness hath got a mastery over them; they have clothed themselves with their iniquity and impiety. ⁷ Their iniquity springeth up as it were out of fatness; they passed on to the purpose of their heart. ⁸ They thought and spoke wickedly; they spoke injustice with a lofty air. ⁹ They set their mouth against heaven; and their tongue passed on over the earth. ¹⁰ Shall my people therefore turn to this; and will full days be found by them? ¹¹ They indeed said, How doth God know? and, Is there any knowledge in the Most High? ¹² Behold these who are sinful men; are always prosperous and have gotten wealth.

³² For, because they wronged infants they shall be slain: and a rigorous inquest shall destroy the wicked.

⁴ Then I said, perhaps they are poor, therefore they could not. Because they have not known the way of the Lord and the judgment of God, ⁵ I will go to the nobles and speak to them. [J] Because these knew the way of the Lord and the judgment of God, and lo! with one consent, have broken the yoke and burst the bands; ⁶ therefore a lion from the forest hath smitten them and a wolf hath destroyed them even in their houses, and a leopard hath lain in wait against their cities. Let all who go out from them be hunted down. Because they have multiplied their iniquities; have strengthened themselves in their apostacies;

¹ Hear this word, ye heifers of Basanitis, ye who are on the mountain of Samaria; who tyrannise over the distressed and trample the needy, who say to your masters, Bring and let us drink. ² The Lord sweareth by his Holies, and lo! days are coming upon you when fiery pestilent men will seize you with arms; and throw them with you into boiling kettles: ³ and you shall be dragged out naked over against one another, and cast out naked on the mountain Romman, saith the Lord.

¹ Alas for them who despise Sion and have put their trust in the mount of Samaria. They have gathered as a vintage the governments of nations and gone in ² . house of Israel, Go ye all over [to Chalane] and see, and thence pass on to Ematraba and thence go down to Gath of the Philistines, to the strongest of all those kingdoms of theirs. Are their borders larger than yours, ³ who are coming to an evil day, who are drawing near and on the point of touching false sabbaths? ⁴ Some of you are sleeping on beds of ivory and lolling at ease on their couches, and eating kids from the flocks, and from the herds calves fed with milk: ⁵ some are dwelling: on the sound of musical instruments; as if they thought it fixed and not fleeting. ⁶ Some are drinking filtered wine and anointing themselves with most precious ointment and have no feeling for the affliction of Joseph.

⁹ Because the glory of this house shall be great, the latter greater than the first, saith the Lord Almighty; therefore in this very place I will give peace, saith the Lord Almighty; even peace of mind for a possession to every one active in again raising up this temple.

² Therefore when thou dost an act of charity, sound not a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may be extolled by men. Verily I say to you, they have their reward.

⁵ And when thou prayest, be not like the hypocrites. Because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets that men may observe them; verily I say to you, They have their reward.

¹⁶ And when you fast, be not like the hypocrites, of a dismal countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that men may observe that they are fasting. Verily I say to you, They have their reward.

¹⁵ Then he said to them, Take heed and be upon your guard against covetousness. For in what affluence soever a man may be, his life doth not depend on his possessions. ¹⁶ Then he spoke a parable to them saying, There was a certain rich man, whose ground produced plenteously. ¹⁷ Whereupon he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do; for I have not room to store my crops. ¹⁸ Then he said, I will do this. I will pull down my store houses and build larger, and there lay up all my produce and my good things. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul; Soul, thou hast many good things laid up in store for many years: take thine ease; eat; drink; and be joyful. ²⁰ Whereupon God said to him; Fool, this very night this soul of thine will be demanded of thee. Whose then will those things be which thou hast provided? ²¹ Thus let every one [say] to himself who is heaping up treasure and is not rich for God.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was clad with purple and cotton robes, and who feasted daily in a splendid manner. ²⁰ And there was a certain poor man, named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ desirous indeed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from his table: and moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² At length this poor man died, and was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom. And the rich man died also, and was buried. ²³ And in the mansion of the dead having lifted up his eyes, being in torment, he seeth Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ Whereupon he cried and said, Father, Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

²³ At hearing this he was very sorrowful; for he was very rich. ²⁴ When Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, With what difficulty will men who have these things, enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ for it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

¹⁷ Charge them who are rich in this present state not to be high minded; not to trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who imparteth to us richly all things for enjoyment;

⁶ But you have treated the poor with disdain. Do not the rich domineer over you? Do they not drag you to tribunals?

¹ Come, now, ye rich; weep, and raise a mournful cry for the miseries which are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are covered with rust; and the rust of them will be a witness against you, and corrode your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold the wages of the labourers who have reaped your fields, which you have withholden, raise a cry; and the outcries of these reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ You have lived luxuriously on the earth. You have indulged voluptuousness. You have pampered your hearts, as on a day of public feasting. ⁶ You have condemned you have murdered the just one. Is he not setting himself in array against you?

⁶ render to her as she hath rendered to you and requite her double according to her works. In the cup in which she mingled, mingle for her a double portion. ⁷ In proportion to her ostentation and luxury inflict on her torment and grief. Because she saith in her heart, I am enthroned a queen and am not a widow, and shall not see sorrow; ⁸ therefore in one day these calamities shall come upon her, pestilence and sorrow and famine; and she shall be consumed with fire; for the Lord God who judgeth her is mighty.

¹¹ houses full of all good things, which thou hast not filled; cisterns of hewn stone, which thou hast not hewed; vineyards, and olive yards which thou hast not planted; and when thou hast eaten, and art filled, ¹² take heed to thyself, that thou forget not the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt; out of the house of bondage.

⁵ They who were full of bread have been brought low; And they who were hungry have reached land. For she who was barren hath born seven children; And she who abounded in children hath been made weak.

⁵ But the mirth of the wicked is sudden ruin, and the joy of transgressors, destruction, ⁶ though his gifts mount up to heaven, and his sacrifice reach the clouds. ⁷ For when he thinketh that he is now firmly established, then shall he be utterly destroyed; and they who have seen him will say, Where is he?

⁶ As for me, I am a Worm, and no man; the scorn of men and the people's contempt. ⁷ All that see me have laughed me to scorn; they said with their lips while they shaked their head,

¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; he shall never see light.

¹³ Grief mixeth not with pleasures; but extreme joy tendeth to sorrow.

⁹ that when I am filled I may not become false and say, Who seeth me? Or being in want, steal and swear by the name of God.

² To laughter I said, It is madness; and to mirth, What is this thou art doing?

³ Grief is better than laughter; for by a sadness of countenance a heart may be made better.

⁶ Like the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of fools. Surely this also is vanity.

²¹ Upon you indeed there shall come a grievous famine; and it shall come to pass that when you are hungry, you will fret and curse the ruler and the customs of your country. And they will look up to the heaven above,

²⁰ but will turn to the right because he is hungry, and devour on the left, but shall not be satisfied. Man is devouring the flesh of his brother's arm;

³ For this cause my loins are filled with fainting; pangs have seized me like a woman in travail. I did wrong not to hear; I shuddered so that I could not see. ⁴ My heart is bewildered, transgression overwhelmeth me. My soul is on the brink of despair.

⁷ The wine will mourn, the vineyard will mourn, and all that were merry hearted will sigh. ⁸ The mirth of the tabrets hath ceased, the sound of the kithara is no more. ⁹ They are confounded: they have drunk no wine. The palm wine was bitter to them who drank it. ¹⁰ Every city is desolated: the houses will be shut up that none may enter. ¹¹ Raise the mournful cry every where for the wine. A stop is put to all the joy of the land; all the joy of the land is gone. ¹² The cities will be left desolate, and the houses being forsaken will be destroyed.

⁷ For by wine these were made transgressors; they were led astray by strong drink. Priest and prophet were stupefied with strong drink; they were gorged with wine; they were agitated by drunkenness; they reeled to8 and fro. This is oracling!

¹³ therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold my servants shall eat; but you shall be hungry: behold my servants shall drink; but you shall be thirsty: behold my servants shall rejoice; but you shall be ashamed:

⁴ And having drunk wine they praised the gods of gold and silver and brass and wood and stone. ⁵ At that very hour there came forth fingers of a man's hand and wrote over against the lamp, on the plaistering of the wall of the king's palace. And the king beheld with astonishment the joint of the hand that was writing. ⁶ Whereupon the king's countenance changed and his thoughts troubled him and the joints of his loins were loosened and his knees smote one against another.

¹⁰ And I will turn your festivals into mourning, and all your songs into songs of lamentation. And I will bring sackcloth on every loin and baldness on every head, and cause a mourning for him like that for a beloved, and for them with him, like that of a day of sorrow.

¹⁰ Because one shall be utterly destroyed, and consumed like bindweed and dry stubble;

¹¹ And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment, and saith to him, ¹² Companion, how camest thou hither without having on a wedding garment. And he was struck speechless. ¹³ Then the king said to the attendants, Bind his hands and feet and carry him out and cast him into the outer darkness. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

⁵³ Upon which they derided him, knowing that she was dead.

²⁰ Whereupon God said to him; Fool, this very night this soul of thine will be demanded of thee. Whose then will those things be which thou hast provided?

¹⁴ When the Pharisees who loved money heard all these things they treated him with scorn. ¹⁵ Whereupon he said to them, You are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts. Because that which is high among men, is an abomination in the sight of God,

⁴ nor obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor jesting about things which are unbecoming; but rather thanksgiving.

¹² I know how to be brought low; and I know how to abound: in every respect, and in all things, I have been initiated into the mysteries of feeding plentifully, and suffering hunger; of abounding, and being in want. ¹³ I can undergo all things through Christ who strengthened me.

³ For whilst they are saying, there is peace and safety, sudden destruction is then upon them, like the pangs of a woman in travail, and they cannot escape.

⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into grief; and your joy into con fusion of face.

¹⁷ because thou sayest, "I am rich and become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.

⁷ In proportion to her ostentation and luxury inflict on her torment and grief. Because she saith in her heart, I am enthroned a queen and am not a widow, and shall not see sorrow; ⁸ therefore in one day these calamities shall come upon her, pestilence and sorrow and famine; and she shall be consumed with fire; for the Lord God who judgeth her is mighty. ⁹ And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will wail and beat their breasts for her, when they see the smoke of her burning ¹⁰ standing afar off for fear of her torment, saying, Alas! Alas! that great city Babylon! that 'mighty city! for in one hour thy judgment is come. ¹¹ The merchants of the earth also will weep and mourn for her; because no one any more buyeth their merchandize

⁶ Whereupon the king of Israel assembled all the prophets, about four hundred men, and said to them, Shall I go up to Remmath Galaad to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord will certainly deliver into the king's hands. ⁷ And Josaphat said to the king of Israel, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord that we may inquire of the Lord by him? ⁸ And the king of Israel said to Josaphat, There is a certain man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him; for he never speaketh good of me; but evil; one Michaias, son of Jemblaa. And Josaphat king of Juda said, Let not the king speak so.

¹³ So the messenger who went to call Michaias, spoke to him saying, Behold all the prophets with one mouth speak good things concerning the king, conform, I pray thee, thy words to the words of every of them, and speak good things. ¹⁴ To which Michaias replied, As the Lord liveth, whatever the Lord shall say to me, that will I speak.

²⁴ Thereupon Sedekias son of Chanaan went near and smote Michaias on the cheek, and said, What sort of a spirit of the Lord is that which hath spoken by thee? ²⁵ To which Michaias replied, Behold thou shalt see on that day when thou shalt go into thy inmost chamber to hide thyself there. ²⁶ Then the king of Israel said, Take Michaias and carry him back to Semer, the ruler of the city, ²⁷ and tell Joas, the ruler's son, to put him in ward and feed him with the bread of affliction, and water of affliction, till I return in peace. ²⁸ And Michaias said, If thou return in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me.

¹⁰ who say to the prophets, " Preach not to us, " and to them who see visions, " Speak not to us, nay, speak to us and tell us another error,

³¹ land. The prophets prophesy falsehoods, and the priests clapped with their hands, and my people loved to have it so. Now what will you do in regard to the consequences?

¹¹ you have been put to flight when there was no pursuer: a spirit hath set up a lie: it hath dropped on thee for wine and plenty. Yet it shall come to pass that from a drop of this people,

¹⁵ Now beware of false teachers, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but are inwardly ravenous wolves.

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. Now because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

¹⁸ For such men do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly. And by their fawning speeches and flattering forms of address, they deceive the hearts of the innocent.

⁸ then will be revealed that lawless one, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of his mouth. With the brightness of his coming he will indeed put a stop to the operations ⁹ of him, whose coming is according to the energy of satan, with' all the power, and signs, and wonders of falsehood, ¹⁰ and with all the deceit of this unrighteousness among them who perish. Because they did not embrace the love of the truth that they might be saved; ¹¹ for this cause therefore God will send them the energy of delusion, that they may believe this falsehood; ¹² that all may be condemned who have not believed the truth, but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness.

⁴ Ye adulterers and adulteresses! do you not know that the friendship of this world is enmity against God? Whoever therefore wisheth to be a friend of the world is adjudged an enemy of God.

¹ Now there were also false prophets among the people, as there will be also among you false teachers, who will introduce destructive sects, denying even the Lord who bought them, bringing on themselves speedy destruction. ² And many will follow their pernicious courses, on the account of whom the way of the truth will be ill spoken of. ³ Indeed, with insatiable covetousness, they will, with smooth words, make merchandize of you. But the judgment prepared of old for them is not idle, nor is their destruction slumbering.

¹⁸ For uttering, with a solemn tone, swelling words of vanity, they by the lusts of the flesh. by acts of lasciviousness, ensnare them who are indeed flying from those conversant in error; ¹⁹ promising them liberty while they themselves are slaves to corruption; for by whatever one is subdued, by that he is enslaved

⁵ They are of the world, therefore they speak suitably to the world, and the world hearkeneth to them. ⁶ We are of God. He who knoweth God, hearkeneth to us. He who is not of God doth not hearken to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

³ And I saw one of its heads as if wounded to death; and this deadly wound of it was healed; and the whole earth followed this beast with admiration. ⁴ And they worshipped the dragon who had given the beast authority; and they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like this beast? Who is able to fight with it?"

⁴ If thou meet the ox of thy enemy or his ass going astray thou shalt turn it back and restore it to him. ⁵ And if thou seest thine enemy's ass fallen under his burden thou shalt not pass it by, but shalt raise it up with its load.

²⁹ If I have rejoiced at the downfall of mine enemies, and my heart hath said, Aha! ³⁰ Let mine ear hear myself cursed, and let me be a by-word among the people, when I am afflicted. ³¹ If my maid servants have often said, that we had some of his flesh meat to eat! while I was living luxuriously:

⁴ if I have requited them evil who did me wrong; let me fall by mine enemies as a Worthless man:

¹⁷ If thine enemy fall rejoice not over him; nor be elated at his stumbling:

² The glory of God obscureth a matter: but the glory of a king giveth a lustre to actions.

²¹ If thine enemy hunger feed him; if he be thirsty give him drink: ²² for by doing this thou wilt use the means to melt him; and the Lord will reward thee with good.

⁴³ You have heard that it was said, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy." ⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies. Bless them who curse you. Do good to them who hate you: and pray for them who spitefully use you and persecute you; ⁴⁵ that you may be the children of your Father in heaven: for he causeth the sun to rise on bad and good, and sendeth the rain on just and unjust.

²⁴ Moreover he said to them, Consider what you hear. With whatever measure you deal out, you shall receive; and to you who are attentive more shall be given.

²² Happy are you, when men will hate you; even when they will discard and reproach you, and expose your name as infamous on the account of the son of man;

⁸ And some fell on good ground, and sprang up and yielded increase an hundred fold. Having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Whosoever hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁵ But by the good ground are meant they, who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, retain it, and perseveringly bring forth fruit.

¹⁸ Take heed therefore how you hear; for to him who improveth, more shall be given; but from him who improveth not, even what he thinketh he hath, will be taken away.

³⁴ Whereupon Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing. Then dividing his garments in shares they cast lots.

⁶⁰ Then he kneeled down and cried out with a loud voice, O! Lord, charge not this sin to their account; and having said this he fell asleep.

³⁸ how God anointed him with a holy spirit and power. Him who went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with him,

¹⁷ Render to none evil for evil. Be provident in regard to things good in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If possible, that is, as far as in your power, be at peace with all men. ¹⁹ Beloved, avenge not yourselves, but give place to the wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will requite, saith the Lord." ²⁰ Therefore if thine enemy hunger feed him; if he be thirsty, give him drink; for by doing so thou wilt use the means to melt him. ²¹ Be not overcome by evil; but overcome evil with good.

¹⁰ As we therefore have an opportunity let us do good to all, but more especially to them who are of the household of faith.

¹⁵ see that none return evil for evil to any one; but on all occasions do all the good you can, both to one another and to all men.

¹¹ Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who doth good is of God. But he who doth evil, hath not seen God.

¹⁵ thus saith the Lord, Because the Philistines acted with revenge and with joy of heart heightened the punishment to destroy utterly;

⁵ Therefore thus saith the Lord, Lord, In the fire of my wrath I have spoken against these remnants of nations and against all Idumea: Because they have with joy distributed this land of mine among themselves for a possession, undervaluing lives that you might be a waste for prey;

⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies. Bless them who curse you. Do good to them who hate you: and pray for them who spitefully use you and persecute you;

²⁷ But I charge you, my hearers, Love your enemies. Do good to them who hate you.

⁵ But as a violent attempt was going to be made, both by the Gentiles and Jews, with their chiefs, to assault and stone them,

¹⁴ Bless them who persecute you"bless and curse not.

¹² working with our own hands. Being reviled we give good words; being persecuted we suffer patiently;

¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so.

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, revile for revile; but on the contrary, blessing; knowing that you have been called for this, that you may inherit a blessing.

³⁰ Whereupon Memphibosthe said to the king, Nay, let him take all, seeing my lord the king is returned to his house in peace.

²³ Then Sedekias, son of Chanaan, came near and smote Michaias on the cheek, and said to him, Which way went the spirit of the Lord from me to speak to thee?

⁶ My back I have given to scourges, and my cheeks to be slapped with an open hand, and I turned not my face from the shame of spittles.

³⁰ He will give his cheek to him who smiteth it; he will feed on reproaches;

¹ [p] Now shall a daughter be hedged in with a hedge. He hath ordered a siege against us. [J] With a rod they will smite on the cheek the tribes of Israel.

³⁹ But I say to you, Contend not with the injurious: but if one smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any determine to sue thee at law for thy vest, give it up to him, nay were it even thy mantle. ⁴¹ And if one press thee to go one mile, go with him two. ⁴² Give to him who asketh thee. And from him who would borrow of thee, turn not thou away.

⁶⁷ Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists,68 and smote him with staves, saying,

⁶⁴ Having covered his eyes they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy. Who is he who smote thee?

²² Upon his saying this, one of the under officers who stood by, gave Jesus a slap on the cheek, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

² Upon which the chief priest Ananias ordered them who stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

⁷ Now, then, it is indeed a disparagement to you that you have law suits among yourselves. Why do you not rather suffer wrong? Why do you not rather suffer loss?

²⁰ for you bear, if one enslaveth you; if one devoureth; if one receiveth; if one exalteth himself; if one openly insulteth you.

³⁴ For you sympathized with me in my bonds, and waited with joy the seizure of your goods, knowing that you had in yourselves a better,"even an ever-during substance in heaven.

²⁶ And if thou hast taken the mantle of thy neighbour as a pledge, thou shalt restore it to him before the setting of the sun; ²⁷ for it is his covering. This mantle is the only covering of his nakedness. In what can he sleep? If therefore he cry to me, I will hear him; for I am merciful.

⁷ If then there chance to be among you a needy person; one of thy brethren, in one of thy cities in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor shut thy hand from thy brother who is in want. ⁸ Thou shalt open thy hands liberally to him, and lend him what he is in want of, according to his necessity. ⁹ Take heed to thyself that there be not a lurking thought in thy heart; a wicked suggestion, saying, The seventh year, the year of remission is near at hand. When thou shalt look with an evil eye at thy brother who is in want, and not give him, he will cry to the Lord against thee, and it will be a great sin in thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give him, and lend him freely, what he is in want of, according to his necessity. And thou shalt not be grieved at heart when thou givest to him; for on this account the Lord thy God will bless thee in all thy works, and in all the labours of thy hands.

¹ Now there was a great cry of the people and their wives, against their brethren the Jews. ² There were some who said, We with our sons and our daughters are many, therefore we will take corn that we may eat and live. ³ There were others who said, As for our fields and our vineyards and our houses, let us mortgage them that we may get corn and eat. ⁴ There were others who said, We have borrowed money to pay the king's tribute, and pledged our fields and our vineyards and our houses, ⁵ and now our flesh is the same as that of our brethren, our sons the same as theirs, yet behold we are subjecting our sons and our daughters to be slaves, nay, some of our daughters are already subjected to bondage, and we have no means to redeem them, for our nobles have got our fields and our vineyards. ⁶ Upon hearing their cry and these speeches, I was exceedingly grieved. ⁷ And having consulted in my own mind, I chid the nobles and the chiefs, and said to them, would any man exact of his brother what you exact? Then having assembled a great meeting against them, ⁸ I said to them, We with our free will offerings have purchased' our brethren the Jews who were sold to the nations; and are you going to sell your brethren that they may be sold to us? And when they held their peace and found no answer, ⁹ I said, This thing which you do is not good. It is not in this manner that you are in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of the nations, our enemies. ¹⁰ My brethren and my acquaintances, and I myself, have lent them money and provisions. Let us I pray you relinquish our demands for this. ¹¹ Restore to them, I beseech you, this very day their fields, and their vineyards, and their olive yards, and their houses; and abate the price at which you have sold to each other corn and wine and oil. ¹² Thereupon they said, We will restore, and require nothing of them. We will do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests and having caused them to swear that they would do according to this decree, ¹³ I shook my lap and said, So may God shake every man who will not perform this promise, out of his house and from his labour, and let them be shaken out and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen; and praised the Lord, and the people executed the decree. ¹⁴ From the day I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Juda; from the twentieth to the thirty second year of Arthasastha; for twelve years, I and my brethren did not eat the daily allowance which was their due; ¹⁵ those daily allowances with which they who were before me had loaded them, and which they had exacted from them in bread and wine, to the amount at least of forty didrachms of silver. They indeed who had been displaced, tyrannised over the people; but as for me I did not do so; because I feared God. ¹⁶ Even in the work of the wall, I did not domineer over them; nor did I purchase a field: and all who were employed with me there in the work, ¹⁷ even a hundred and fifty chief men of the Jews, besides those who came to us, from the nations around us, were at my table. ¹⁸ And the daily provisions for my table, was one ox, six choice sheep, and a kid for myself; and every ten days wine in plenty for all. Yet for all this I did not demand the daily allowance of bread, because the bondage was heavy upon the people. ¹⁹ Remember me, my God, for good, for all I have done for this people.

¹ For the conclusion. A Psalm by David. Happy he who is considerate with regard to the distressed and needy; in time of trouble the Lord will deliver him.

⁹ He hath dispersed, he hath given to the needy; his righteousness shall endure forever. His horn shall be gloriously exalted:

²⁷ Delay not to do good to the needy, when it is in the power of thy hand to help. ²⁸ Do not say, Go away and come again: tomorrow I will give; when thou hast it in thy power to do good: for thou knowest not what to-morrow will bring forth.

²⁴ There are some who scattering their substance make it more: and some who gather and make it less. ²⁵ A soul is blessed which is altogether sincere: but a passionate man is not respected.

¹⁷ He who is kind to the poor lendeth to God; and according to his gift he will repay him.

²⁶ All the day long a wicked man indulgeth wicked desires; but the righteous unsparingly exerciseth pity and compassion.

⁹ He who compassionateth the poor shall be fed; for he gave of his own bread to the poor. He who giveth gifts secureth victory and honour. He indeed taketh away the soul of the receivers.

¹⁶ In all those things to which I applied my heart to know wisdom and to take a view of the business which is done on the earth; because day and night this is never at rest,

⁷ deal out thy bread to the hungry, and take into thy house the poor who have no shelter; if thou seest one naked, clothe him, and look not scornfully on dependants of thy race; ⁸ then shall thy light break forth like the morning, and thy remedies shall spring up speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee, and the glory of the Lord will surround thee. ⁹ Then thou shalt cry and God will answer thee; and whilst thou art speaking he will say, Lo I am here. If thou remove from thee the bond, and the vote and decree which occasion murmuring, ¹⁰ and from thy soul give bread to the hungry and satisfy an afflicted soul; then shall thy light spring up in darkness; and thy darkness shall be as the noon day:

¹ Then a blast of wind took me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the Lord which was directly in front and which faced the east. And behold at the vestibule of the gate about five and twenty men! And I saw in the midst of them Jechonias the son of Ezer and Phaltias the son of Banaias, the leaders of the people. ² And the Lord said to me, son of man, these are the men who devise vanities and who give bad advice in the city,

⁴² Give to him who asketh thee. And from him who would borrow of thee, turn not thou away. ⁴³ You have heard that it was said, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy." ⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies. Bless them who curse you. Do good to them who hate you: and pray for them who spitefully use you and persecute you; ⁴⁵ that you may be the children of your Father in heaven: for he causeth the sun to rise on bad and good, and sendeth the rain on just and unjust. ⁴⁶ For if you love them who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans the same? ⁴⁷ And if you salute your brethren only, wherein do ye excel? Do not even the publicans do the same? ⁴⁸ You therefore are to be perfect, as your Father, who is in heaven, is perfect.

¹² and forgive us our debts, as we do forgive our debtors;

²⁷ And the lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, dismissed him and forgave him the debt. ²⁸ And as that servant was going out, he met one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred deniars and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay me what thou owest. ²⁹ His fellow servant therefore falling at his feet, besought him, saying, Have patience with me and I will pay thee all. ³⁰ And he would not; but went and cast him into prison until he should pay the debt.

³⁵ Thus also will my heavenly father deal with you, if you do not from your hearts forgive, everyone the trespasses of his brother.

³⁸ Give; and to you will be given; into your lap there shall be given good measure, pressed down and shaken and running over. For with the same measure with which you mete to others, you shall have measure returned to you.

⁴¹ But with respect to the things in it, give alms, and behold they are all clean to you.

³³ sell your possessions and give alms: provide for yourselves purses which do not wear out; a treasure in the heavens, which will never fail; where no thief approacheth, nor moth spoileth:

²² Upon hearing this, Jesus said to him, There is still one thing wanting to thee. Sell all that thou hast and distribute to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.

³⁵ On all occasions I have suggested to you that you ought thus to labour, and support the indigent, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he said, "It is a greater happiness to give, than to receive."

⁶ Now considering this, that he who soweth sparingly shall reap sparingly, and that he who soweth bountifully will reap bountifully, ⁷ let every one give as he is predisposed in his heart, not with regret, nor reluctance; for God loveth a cheerful giver: ⁸ and God is able to make every bounty redound to your advantage. That you having always a sufficiency in every thing, may abound to every good work, ⁹ [as it is written, "He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor, his righteousness shall endure for ever;" ¹⁰ and may He who furnisheth abundantly seed for the sower and bread for food, supply and multiply your seed, and increase the products of your righteousness!] ¹¹ you are enriched in every thing for every act of bounty, which operateth through us to produce thanksgiving to God. ¹² Because the distribution of this religious offering not only supplieth the wants of the saints, but also superaboundeth with many thanksgivings to God; ¹³ [by the experience of this distribution they glorify God for your avowed subjection to the glad tidings of the Christ;] therefore, for the liberality of this contribution for them and for all; ¹⁴ and for the supplication which is made for you by them who love you on account of the supereminent favour of God for you,

²⁸ Let the stealer steal no more; but rather labour, and procure honestly with the work of his hands, that he may have wherewithal to relieve the needy.

¹² Whatsoever therefore you would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them, for this is the law and the prophets.

³⁹ And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

¹⁴ For the whole law is summed up in this one precept, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

⁸ If you fulfil a law which, according to the scripture, is indeed a royal one, namely, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," you do well: ⁹ but if you have respect of persons, you commit sin, and are by that law convicted as transgressors. ¹⁰ For whosoever is to keep the whole law and shall fail in one point, is guilty of all. ¹¹ For it having said, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," hath also said, "Thou shalt not murder" Now, if thou shall not commit adultery, but shalt commit murder, thou art become a transgressor of law. ¹² Thus speak and act thus, as you are to be judged by a law of liberty; ¹³ for the sentence of judgment shall be without mercy for him who hath not exercised mercy, though mercy glorieth over a sentence of judgment. ¹⁴ What is the advantage, my brethren, though one should say he hath belief, when he hath not works? Can that belief save him? ¹⁵ Suppose a brother or a sister be naked, or in want of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you should say to them, go in peace: be warmed, and be fed to the full; and you do not give them the things necessary for the body, is this any advantage?

⁴⁶ For if you love them who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans the same? ⁴⁷ And if you salute your brethren only, wherein do ye excel? Do not even the publicans do the same?

⁸ Thou shalt open thy hands liberally to him, and lend him what he is in want of, according to his necessity. ⁹ Take heed to thyself that there be not a lurking thought in thy heart; a wicked suggestion, saying, The seventh year, the year of remission is near at hand. When thou shalt look with an evil eye at thy brother who is in want, and not give him, he will cry to the Lord against thee, and it will be a great sin in thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give him, and lend him freely, what he is in want of, according to his necessity. And thou shalt not be grieved at heart when thou givest to him; for on this account the Lord thy God will bless thee in all thy works, and in all the labours of thy hands. ¹¹ Because thy land may never be without some indigent person in it, therefore I give thee a charge to do this thing, saying, Thou shalt open thy hands liberally to thy brother who is in want, and to the needy in thy land.

⁴² Give to him who asketh thee. And from him who would borrow of thee, turn not thou away.

¹² Then he said to him who had invited him; When thou makest a dinner or a supper, invite not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy relations, nor thy rich neighbours, lest they also invite thee in their turn, and a recompense be made thee. ¹³ But when thou makest an entertainment, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind, ¹⁴ and thou shall be happy. For as they are not of ability to requite thee, a requital will be made to thee at the resurrection of the righteous.

³⁵ And if thy brother who is with thee become poor and distressed in his circumstances when near thee, thou shalt help him, as a proselyte or a sojourner, and thy brother shall live with thee. ³⁶ Thou shalt not take from him usury or increase, but thou shalt fear thy God, I the Lord; and thy brother shall live with thee. ³⁷ Thou shalt not lend him thy money on usury, nor give him thy victuals for an increase.

²⁶ All the day long he is merciful and lendeth, and his seed shall be entitled to a blessing.

⁵ a beneficent man who commiserateth and lendeth. He will manage his affairs with judgment;

⁹ The Lord is kind to them who wait, and his mercies are over all his works.

⁷ cried with a loud voice, saying, What hast thou to do with me, Jesus, son of the most high God?" I conjure thee by God not to torment me?

³² He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

²⁷ But I charge you, my hearers, Love your enemies. Do good to them who hate you. ²⁸ Bless them who curse you; and pray for them who spitefully abuse you. ²⁹ To him who smiteth thee on one cheek, present also the other. And from him who taketh thy mantle, withhold not thy coat. ³⁰ Give to every one who asketh thee. And from him who taketh away thy goods, do not demand them back. ³¹ And as you wish men to do to you, do ye even so to them.

³⁵ By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you exercise mutual love.

⁸ by this my Father is glorified. That you may bear much fruit, you must be my disciples.

¹⁷ though at the same time he did not fail to give an evidence of himself, by conferring favours, giving us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

⁸ but God confirmeth his love for us, because while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. ⁹ Much more therefore shall we, being now acquitted by his blood, be saved by him from the wrath; ¹⁰ For if we, when enemies, were reconciled to God by the death of his son, much more shall we, being reconciled, be saved by his life.

¹⁰ By this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever doth not practise righteousness is not of God, nor he who doth not love his brother. ¹¹ For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, ¹² and not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And why did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. ¹³ Wonder not, my brethren, if the world hate you. ¹⁴ We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who loveth not his brother abideth in death.

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and every one who loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. ⁸ He who doth not love hath not known God, for God is love. ⁹ By this the love of God was manifested among us, because God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we may live by him. ¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins. ¹¹ Beloved, if God so loved us; we surely ought to love one another.

⁴⁸ You therefore are to be perfect, as your Father, who is in heaven, is perfect.

³¹ Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and detraction, be banished from among you, with malice of every sort;

¹ be ye therefore imitators of God as beloved children. ² And walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, as an3 offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

¹⁵ but as he who hath called you is holy, be ye also holy in the whole course of your life; ¹⁶ for it is written, "Be ye holy, because I am holy."

⁷ Happy the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy.

¹⁴ For if you forgive men their offences, your heavenly father will also forgive you; ¹⁵ but if you do not forgive men their offences, neither will your father forgive your offences.

¹ Judge not, that you may not be judged; ² for as you judge, you shall be judged: and the measure which you mete, shall be measured to you again. ³ Now why art thou observant of the mote in thy brother's eye, and insensible to the splinter in thine own eye? ⁴ Or, how canst thou say to thy brother, Hold! let me take the mote out of thine eye, when lo! there is a splinter in thine own eye? ⁵ Hypocrite, first take the splinter out of thine own eye; and then thou wilt see clearly to remove the mote out of thy brother's eye.

³⁰ And he would not; but went and cast him into prison until he should pay the debt.

³⁴ So his lord, being incensed, delivered him to the executioners of justice until he should pay all that was due to him, ³⁵ Thus also will my heavenly father deal with you, if you do not from your hearts forgive, everyone the trespasses of his brother.

²⁵ But when you stand praying, if you have any ground of complaint against any one, forgive him; that your father who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

³ Take heed to yourselves. And if thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him: and if he repent, forgive him. ⁴ And if he trespass against thee seven times a day, and seven times a day return to thee, saying, I repent; thou shall forgive him.

¹ therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art, who judgest another: for in the act of judging another thou condemnest thyself. For thou the judger dost the same things. ² Now we know .that the judgment of God is according to truth against them who commit such things.

³ Let not him, who eateth despise him who doth not eat. And let not him who doth not eat, judge him who eateth. For God hath taken him into his family, ⁴ who art thou who judgest another's servant. To his own master he standeth or falleth. But he shall stand, for God is able to establish him.

¹⁰ Why then judgest thou thy brother, or why despisest thou thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of the Christ; ¹¹ For it is written, "As I live, saith the Lord, to me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall give praise to God." ¹² Since every one of us then shall give an account of himself to God, ¹³ let us therefore no more judge one another, but rather come to this determination, not to lay a stumbling block in the way of a brother, nor give any occasion of offence. ¹⁴ I know and am fully assured by the Lord Jesus; that nothing is of itself unclean. But to him who thinketh any thing unclean, to him it is unclean. ¹⁵ Now if on account of thy food thy brother is grieved, thou no longer walkest According to love. Destroy not by thy food him for whom Christ died. ¹⁶ Let not therefore the good which you enjoy be ill spoken of.

³ To me indeed it is a matter of very small concern, to be tried by you or by human process; nay, I will not be my own judge. ⁴ For though I am not conscious to myself of an' thing amiss, yet even in that case I am not justified; but he who trieth me is the Lord. ⁵ So pass no judgment prematurely, until the Lord come, who will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and expose to view the counsels of the hearts, and then the praise for every one will be from God.

⁴ Love is long suffering; it aboundeth in kindness. Love is not envious. Love is not insolent: it is not puffed up. ⁵ It doth not behave itself unbecomingly. It is not self interested. It is not easily provoked. It placeth not the evil to account. ⁶ It rejoiceth not in iniquity, but shareth in the joys of truth. ⁷ It beareth all things. It believeth all things. It hopeth all things. It endureth all things patiently.

³² and be kind to one another, tenderly compassionate, forgiving one another. And as God hath in Christ forgiven you,

¹³ bearing with one another, and forgiving one another. If any one hath a cause of complaint against another; as the Christ hath freely forgiven you, so do ye.

¹² There is but one [judge]: the lawgiver, who is able to save and destroy; who art thou who judgest another?

⁹ Repine not, brethren, against one another, that you may not be condemned. Behold the judge is at the door.

¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give him, and lend him freely, what he is in want of, according to his necessity. And thou shalt not be grieved at heart when thou givest to him; for on this account the Lord thy God will bless thee in all thy works, and in all the labours of thy hands.

¹⁶ And if a false witness rise up against a man, and accuse him of any crime, ¹⁷ the two men between whom is the controversy, shall stand before the Lord, and before the priests, and before the judges, who may be in those days. ¹⁸ And when the judges have made a strict examination, if the false witness hath testified falsehoods, and risen up against his brother; ¹⁹ you shall do to him as he wickedly thought to do to his brother. thou shalt remove the evil from among you; ²⁰ and the rest, when they hear, will be afraid, and thenceforth proceed no more to commit such evil among you. ²¹ Thine eye shall not pity him; life for life; eye for eye; tooth for tooth; hand for hand; foot for foot.

⁷ Whereupon Adonibezek said, Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, have been under my table, gathering up the offals thereof; therefore as I have done, so hath God requited me: And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

²⁷ Blessed be the Lord the God of our fathers who thus put it in the king's heart to glorify the house of the Lord which is at Jerusalem, ²⁸ and who gave me favour in the eyes of the king and his counsellors, and of all the officers of the king who were high in office. As for me, I strengthened myself, as the good hand of God was upon me, and assembled from among Israel chiefs to go up with me.

¹⁰ So Haman was hanged on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the king's anger was appeased.

²⁵ and as he went to the king with an intention to hang Mordecai, but all the evils he endeavoured to bring on the Jews, fell upon himself, and he and his sons were hanged;

¹⁶ Far from depriving the poor of what they had, or causing the heart of a widow to fail; ¹⁷ if I have eaten my morsel alone, and have not shared it with the orphan; ¹⁸ [for from my youth I as a father nourished them, and was their guide from my mother's womb] ¹⁹ If I have seen the naked perishing and have not clothed them; ²⁰ and if the poor have not blessed me, and their shoulders been warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

¹¹ When all his brethren and his sisters heard what had befallen him, they came to him, together with all those who were formerly acquainted with him, and having eaten and drank at his house, they comforted him, and expressed their amazement at all that the Lord had brought upon him. And every one presented him a lamb, and a quarter of a drachm of gold bullion.

²⁵ With the merciful thou will shew thyself merciful, ²⁶ and with a harmless man thou wilt be harmless; with a warrior thou wilt be a warrior, and with the wily, thou wilt practise wiles.

²² The blessing of the Lord is on the head of the righteous; it maketh rich, and to it no sorrow of heart shall be joined.

¹ Send away thy bread on the face of the water; for after many days thou shalt find it. ² Give a portion to seven and even to eight; for thou knowest not what evil may be on the earth.

⁶ Behold it is written before me: I will not keep silence, until I have retributed into their bosom ⁷ their sins; and the sins of their fathers, saith the Lord. They have burned incense on the mounts, and treated me with scorn on the hills, I will retribute their works into their bosom.

² for as you judge, you shall be judged: and the measure which you mete, shall be measured to you again.

⁴² And whoever shall give any one of these little ones, were it only a cup of cold water to drink, on the account of his being a disciple, verily I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

¹³ for the sentence of judgment shall be without mercy for him who hath not exercised mercy, though mercy glorieth over a sentence of judgment.

⁵ And I heard the angel of the waters saying, Righteous art thou, O Lord, who art and who wast and who art to come, because thou hast passed these judgments. ⁶ Because they poured out the blood of thy saints and prophets, therefore thou hast given them blood to drink, for they deserve it.

¹⁶ Still there will be deceivers, who will call this people happy, and lead them astray, that they may devour them;

¹⁰ you see that they are all blind; that they have not knowledge. They are dumb dogs, they cannot bark: they are asleep in bed, they love to slumber:

¹⁵ Were they ashamed because they failed? even in that case they were not ashamed; nor were they sensible of their infamy; therefore they shall fall in the common ruin; and in the time of visitation they shall perish, saith the Lord.

¹⁵ therefore thus saith the Lord concerning those prophets: Those who prophesy falsehoods in My name, and who say [though I did not send them], "There shall be no sword nor famine in this land," they shall die a direful death; and by famine these prophets shall be consumed. ¹⁶ And the people to whom they prophesy, with their wives and their sons and their daughters, shall, by reason of the sword and the famine, be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem; and there shall be none to bury them, when I pour out these evils on them.

⁶ Therefore from vision you shall have night; and from prophesying you shall have darkness. And the sun shall set upon the prophets, and upon them the day shall darken: ⁷ and the seers of dreams shall be put to shame; and the diviners shall be laughed to scorn, and reviled by all; for none will hearken to them.

¹⁵ Then the Lord said to me, Take thee yet the pastoral utensils of an unskilful shepherd; ¹⁶ for behold I am about to raise up a shepherd against this land, who will not visit what is fainting, nor seek what is scattered; nor heal what is bruised; nor lead aright what is sound; but will devour the flesh of the choice, and tear their joints asunder. ¹⁷ ye feeders of vanities who have forsaken the sheep. There is a sword against his arms, and against his right eye. Shall his arm be quite withered, and his right eye utterly put out?

¹⁴ Let them alone. They are blind leaders of blind. Now if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into a ditch.

¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding. ¹⁷ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gold? Or the temple which halloweth the gold? ¹⁸ And, to swear by the altar doth not bind; but to swear by the gift thereon is binding. ¹⁹ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gift? Or the altar which halloweth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all on it. ²¹ And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by him who dwelleth therein. ²² And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. ²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel. ²⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but on the inside they are full of rapine, and intemperance. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean.

³³ Serpents! brood of vipers! how can you escape the punishment of hell?

¹⁹ and hast a confidence that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light to them who are in darkness,

³ If any one teacheth otherwise, and doth not attend to the wholesome words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine according to godliness, ⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but raving upon questions and debates about words, from which proceed envy, contention, abusive language, evil suspicions, ⁵ preposterous studies of men whose minds are corrupt and devoid of truth, who suppose this religion to be a matter of gain. From such withdraw thyself.

¹³ and wicked men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

²⁴ The scholar is not greater than the teacher; nor the servant, than the master. ²⁵ It is enough for the scholar to be as his teacher; and the servant, as his master. If they have called the master of the family Beelzebub, how much more, his domestics.

¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves.

¹⁶ Verily, verily I say to you, The servant is not greater than his master; nor is a missionary greater than he who sent him.

²⁰ Remember the word which I spake to you. The servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my word, they will also keep yours.

⁵ And David was inflamed with indignation against the man to a great degree, and said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man who hath done this is guilty of death, ⁶ and shall make sevenfold restitution for the lamb, because he hath done such a deed and had no compassion. ⁷ Whereupon Nathan said to David, Thou art the man who hath done this. Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel, I anointed thee to be king over Israel, and it was I who delivered thee out of the hand of Saul,

⁹ But as it dropped out and fell, therefore when Joab said to Amessai, art thou well my brother? and with his right hand took hold of Amessai's beard to kiss it, ¹⁰ Amessai did not attend to the sword which was in Joab's hand. So Joab smote him with it into the belly, and his bowels gushed out on the ground, so that he did not repeat the blow. And while he was dying, Joab and Abessa, his brother, pursued after Sabee, son of Bochori,

²⁰ In answer to which Joab said, Mercy on me! Mercy on me! Am I for swallowing up? Am I for destroying? ²¹ Is not this the case? There is a man of mount Ephraim; his name is Sabee son of Bochori, who hath lifted up his hand against king David. Only deliver him up to me, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said, Behold his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

³² The Lord indeed hath turned the blood of his iniquity on his head. Because he fell upon two men more righteous, and better than himself, and slew them with the sword, and my father David knew not of their blood, namely Abenner, son of Ner, the captain general of Israel, and Amessai, son of Jether, the captain general of Juda;

⁶ But he did not number Levi and Benjamin among them. Because the king's word prevailed over Joab,

² because, before him, he hath acted with deceit.

⁹ [p] The heart is deep beyond all things; so also is a man, who then can know Him?

²⁸ He hath turned away from all his wicked acts which he committed; he shall surely live; he shall not die.

⁷ And as they continued asking him, he raised himself up, and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin throw the first stone at her.

⁴⁰ But now you seek to kill me, a man who told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. ⁴¹ You do the works of your father. Hereupon they said to him, We were not born of fornication; we have one father, namely, God. ⁴² Then Jesus said to them, If God were your father, you would love me; for I proceed and do come from God. For I have not come of myself, but he sent me. ⁴³ Why do ye not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear this doctrine of mine. ⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and bent upon executing the desires of your father. He was a manslayer from the beginning, and did .not abide in the truth. Because there is no truth in him, when he speaketh falsehood he speaketh what is. natural to him, for he is a liar, and the father of it.

¹ therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art, who judgest another: for in the act of judging another thou condemnest thyself. For thou the judger dost the same things.

²¹ Thou therefore who teachest another, dost thou not teach thyself? Thou who proclaimest not to steal, dost thou steal? ²² Thou who sayest, Commit not adultery', dost thou commit adultery? Thou who abominatest idols, dost thou violate things sacred? ²³ Thou who gloriest in a law, dost thou by the breach of that law dishonour God? ²⁴ For as it is written, "On your account the name of God is blasphemed among the nations."

²⁴ For having viewed himself, and gone away, he instantly forgot what manner of person he was.

¹⁶ But to the sinner God said, "Why dost thou mention my judgments, or take my covenant in thy mouth? ¹⁷ As for thee, thou hast hated instruction, and cast my words behind thy back. ¹⁸ When thou sawest a thief, thou didst run with him; and hast been a partaker with adulterers. ¹⁹ Thy mouth hath abounded in wickedness, and thy tongue hath framed deceits. ²⁰ Sitting down thou hast spoken against thy brother, and against thy mother's son, propagated falsehood. ²¹ These things thou hast done and I was silent. Thou unjustly didst suppose that I would be like thyself. I will reprove thee and set things in order before thee.

⁹ Turn away thy face from my sins; and blot out all mine iniquities. ¹⁰ Create in me, God, a pure heart; and renew a right spirit within me. ¹¹ Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me. ¹² Restore to me the joy of thy salvation; and support me with a becoming spirit, ¹³ that I may teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners may turn to thee.

¹⁷ A just man is his own accuser in his first speech; but when he is accused his adversary is refuted.

²² The eye is the lamp of the body. If therefore thine eye be sound thy whole body will be enlightened: ²³ but if thine eye be distempered, thy whole body will be dark. If then the light which is in thee be darkness, how great will the darkness be!

¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter. ¹⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you devour the houses of the widows; and for a pretext make long prayers. For this you shall be punished with greater severity. ¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves.

⁷⁵ Whereupon Peter recollected the word which Jesus said to him, "Before cockcrowing thou wilt three times deny me;" and going out, he wept bitterly.

¹⁵ Thereupon the Lord answered him, and said, Hypocrite! Doth not every one of you, on the sabbath day, loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead it to water?

³² and I have prayed for thee that thy faith may not quite fail. When thou therefore hast recovered thyself, strengthen thou thy brethren.

³⁸ Thereupon Peter said to them, Repent and let every one of you be baptized to the remission of sins for the name of Jesus Christ, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

²¹ thou hast no portion nor share in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

⁹ And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank. ¹⁰ Now there was in Damascus a certain disciple named Ananias, And to him the Lord said in a vision, Ananias! And he said, Lord, here I am. ¹¹ Then the Lord said to him, Arise and go to the street, which is called Straight street, and inquire at the house of Judas for Saul of Tarsus; for behold he is praying, ¹² and hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias, coming in and laying a hand on him that he may recover sight. ¹³ Upon which Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many concerning this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints in Jerusalem; ¹⁴ and he is here with authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke thy name. ¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, Go: for this person is a vessel which I have chosen to bear my name before nations and kings and the children of Israel. For ¹⁶ I will shew him what he must suffer for my name. ¹⁷ So Ananias went and entered the house, and having laid his hands on him, said, Brother Saul, The Lord, even Jesus who appeared to thee on the road as thou camest, hath sent me that thou mayst recover sight and be filled with a holy spirit. ¹⁸ Upon this there fell immediately from his eyes something like scales, and instantly he recovered sight. Then he arose and was baptized; ¹⁹ and having taken some food, he was strengthened. And Saul was some days with the brethren in Damascus, ²⁰ and forthwith, in the synagogues proclaimed Jesus that he is the son of God.

¹⁰ said, O! full of all deceit and of all wickedness, son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness; wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord!

²¹ Thou therefore who teachest another, dost thou not teach thyself? Thou who proclaimest not to steal, dost thou steal? ²² Thou who sayest, Commit not adultery', dost thou commit adultery? Thou who abominatest idols, dost thou violate things sacred? ²³ Thou who gloriest in a law, dost thou by the breach of that law dishonour God? ²⁴ For as it is written, "On your account the name of God is blasphemed among the nations." ²⁵ For circumcision is indeed profitable if thou performest the law. But if thou art a transgressor of the law thy circumcision is become uncircumcision. ²⁶ If then the uncircumcision keep the moral precepts of the law, shall not such a one's uncircumcision be accounted circumcision? ²⁷ And may not the uncircumcision which in a state of nature performeth the law, judge thee who being under a written law and circumcision art a transgressor of law? ²⁸ For he is not a Jew, who is one outwardly; nor is that circumcision, which is barely in the flesh: ²⁹ but he, who is a Jew inwardly, whose circumcision is that of the heart"spiritually not literally, whose praise is not from men, but from God.

¹⁸ And all this is of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given us the ministry of this reconciliation.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and God is witness, how holy, how just, how irreproachable our behaviour was to you who believed ¹¹ how, as you know, we [exhorted] every one of you, as a father would his children, ¹² exhorting you, and comforting you, and testifying that you should walk worthy of God who inviteth you to his kingdom and glory.

²¹ If any one therefore purify himself from these he will be a vessel for honour, set apart and suitable for the master, ready prepared for every good work.

¹⁰ I entreat thee in respect to this son of mine whom I have begotten in my bonds; namely, Onesimus, ¹¹ who was formerly unprofitable to thee; but is now profitable both to thee and me

⁹ for he who is without these is blind, having closed his eyes, having contracted a forgetfulness of the purification of his past sins.

¹⁷ because thou sayest, "I am rich and become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. ¹⁸ I advise thee to purchase of me gold tried in the fire that thou mayst be rich, and white raiment that thou mayst be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayst see.

¹² The righteous shall bloom like a palm tree; and be multiplied like a cedar on Lebanon. ¹³ Being planted by the house of the Lord they shall flourish in the courts of our God. ¹⁴ In a vigorous old age they shall still multiply; and continue prosperous;

⁴ What more could I do for my vineyard that I have not done for it? Because I expected that it would produce grapes, and it hath produced poisonous berries;

³ that to the mourners in Sion may be given, glory instead of ashes, oil of joy to the mourners, robes of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called generations of righteousness, a plant of the Lord for glory.

²¹ I indeed planted thee an entirely good and fruitful vine: how art thou, degenerate vine, turned to bitterness?

¹⁰ Now the axe is at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which doth not produce good fruit is to be cut down and cast into the fire.

¹⁶ By their fruits you may know them. Are grapes gathered from thorns? Or figs from thistles? ¹⁷ So every good tree beareth good fruit; and every bad tree beareth bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit; nor a bad tree, good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree which beareth not good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. ²⁰ So then by their fruits you will know them.

³³ Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad. For the tree is known by its fruit

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest"they are these"adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, fascinations, enmities, strifes, emulations, .animosities, contentions, factions, sects, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and the like, of which I forewarn you, as I have indeed before declared that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God: ²² But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ meekness, temperance; against such things there is no law.

¹¹ For the favour of God which is for salvation hath been brightly displayed for all men ¹² teaching us in order that we, renouncing impiety and worldly lusts, may live soberly and righteously and piously in this present world, ¹³ waiting for the blessed hope and the bright display of the glory of the great God, and saviour of us Jesus Christ,

¹² They are hidden rocks in your love feasts. When they feast with you, they feed themselves without restraint. They are clouds without water, impelled by winds; autumnal trees without fruit, twice dead, and to be rooted up;

² They spoke vanities one to another: their lips are deceitful, they spoke with a double heart: ³ May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips; and the tongue which speaketh swelling words; ⁴ them who say, "We will magnify our tongue: our lips are our own: who is Lord over us?"

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous will speak wisdom, and his tongue will talk of justice. ³¹ The law of his God is in his heart, and his footsteps shall not slide.

⁸ to perform, my God, thy will, I was determined, even that law of thine, within my heart. ⁹ I have published the good news of thy righteousness, in a great congregation. Behold I will not refrain my lips; thou, Lord, knowest my righteousness. ¹⁰ I have not hid thy truth in my heart, but have mentioned thy salvation; I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from a great congregation.

⁶ And if one came to see me, his heart spoke vainly. He collected iniquity for himself; he went abroad and spoke for that purpose. ⁷ All mine enemies spread whispers against me; against me, they devised things hurtful to me.

² Thy tongue is like a sharp razor: thou hast practised deceit. ³ Thou hast loved evil more than good; lying more than speaking the truth. ⁴ Thou hast loved all the decrees of destruction; a tongue practised in deceit.

⁷ Behold they are to speak oraculously with their mouth; and have a sword in their lips; For who heard?

¹² Let them be but arrested in their pride; the destructions attendant on their oath and falsehood, will shew the sin of their

³ They sharpened their tongues like a sword: they bent a bow, a bitter thing, ⁴ to shoot secretly a blameless man: They are to shoot him suddenly and not be afraid. ⁵ They strengthened for themselves an evil matter: they talked of hiding snares, saying, Who can see us? ⁶ They searched for iniquity: they failed in the search. A man is to come with a deep heart; and God is to be exalted. ⁷ Their Wounds became the dart of infants: ⁸ when their tongues vilified him. All that saw them were troubled:

¹⁵ My mouth shall proclaim thy saving mercy; thy salvation all the day long. Because I am unpractised in studies ¹⁶ I will go in the strength of the Lord; I will mention the saving mercy of thee, Lord, alone. ¹⁷ Thou, God, hast taught me from my youth: and thus far I can declare thy wonders; ¹⁸ even to old age and grey hairs. God, forsake me not, till I declare thine arm to the rising generation;

⁵ The haughty hid a snare for me; they spread out nets for my feet; close by the way they laid for me a stumbling block.

²³ Guard thy heart with all diligence; for out of these are the issues of life.

²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is tried silver; but the heart of the wicked will not stand the test. ²¹ The lips of the righteous are skilled in things lofty; but those devoid of understanding die of want.

¹⁸ They who wound with their speeches are swords: but the tongues of the wise are healing.

²³ A wicked man will not hearken to it, nor can he say any thing in season, or for the publick good.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear to the words of the wise; and hear my discourse and apply thy heart; ¹⁸ that thou mayst know that they are good. If thou indeed wilt lay them up in thy heart; they will give thee delight and be on thy lips.

² O that I had a remote lodging in the wilderness, that I might leave my people and go away from them! [J] Because they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men, ³ and have bent their tongue like a bow; lying and infidelity prevailed in the land; because they have proceeded from evils to evils, and have not known me, saith the Lord; ⁴ be upon your guard every man against his neighbour, and in your own brothers place no confidence; for every brother will supplant, and every friend walk deceitfully; ⁵ every one will treat his friend with contempt. They cannot speak truth; their tongue hath learned to speak lies. They have done injustice, and have not stopped to rectify it.

³⁴ Brood of vipers! how can you who are evil speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produceth good things; and the bad man, out of his bad treasure produceth bad things. ³⁶ Now I assure you in respect to every idle word which men shall utter, they shall give an account thereof in a day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shall be condemned.

³⁸ He who believeth in me; as the scripture hath said, Out of his belly will flow streams of living water.

³ Upon which Peter said, Ananias, Why hath Satan filled thy heart that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Spirit, and keep back a part of the price of the land?

¹⁹ saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands he may receive a holy spirit. ²⁰ Whereupon Peter said to him, let thy money with thee be for destruction! Because thou hast thought that this free gift of God may be purchased with money, ²¹ thou hast no portion nor share in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. ²² Repent therefore of this wickedness of thine; and beseech God, if indeed this thought of thy heart can be forgiven thee. ²³ For I perceive that thou art for bitter gall and for a bond of iniquity.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre. With their tongues they practised deceit. The poison of asps is under the lips of them, ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

⁶ Because it is God, who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who hath shined in our hearts, to give a lustre of the knowledge of the glory of God in the person of Jesus Christ; ⁷ and we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may belong to God and not be from, us;

⁸ To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this favour was granted to proclaim among the nations the unsearchable riches of the Christ,

²⁹ Let no corrupt discourse proceed out of your mouth; nothing but what is good for edification, of such utility as to be a benefit to the hearers.

³ And let not fornication, nor uncleanness of any sort, nor inordinate desire, be so much as named among you, as becometh saints; ⁴ nor obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor jesting about things which are unbecoming; but rather thanksgiving.

¹⁹ when: you are speaking to one another, when with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs you are singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord:

¹⁶ Let the word of the Christ dwell richly in you with all wisdom, when you teach and admonish one another; when with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs you sing gratefully to the Lord with your heart.

⁶ Let your conversation be always with courteousness, seasoned with salt, with a knowledge how you ought to answer every one.

¹⁰ This is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel, After these days, saith the Lord, adapting my laws to their understanding I will write them on their hearts: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

⁵ So also the tongue is a very small member, yet it boasteth great things. See what a great pile of wood a little fire kindleth to a flame! ⁶ Now, the tongue is a fire, the leader of iniquity; the tongue is set among the members, staining the whole body, and setting the wheel of nature in a blaze, when it is itself set in a blaze by hell. ⁷ For all kinds of beasts, and birds, and reptiles, and fishes, are subdued and have been subdued by man; ⁸ But the tongue of man none can subdue. It is an ungovernable monster: it is full of deadly poison.

¹⁵ to execute judgment on all, and to convict all the wicked among them of all their impious deeds, which they have impiously committed, and of all the bitter things which impious sinners have uttered against him."

⁶ A son honoureth a father; and a servant, his master. Now if I be a father, where is my honour? And if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord Almighty. As for you priests, you are they who bring dishonour on my name. Do you say, By what have we brought dishonour on thy name?

²¹ Not every one who saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he who doeth the will of my father who is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me on that day Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name cast out demons, and in thy name done many miracles, ²³ to whom I will then declare, I never acknowledged you; Depart from me ye who work iniquity.

¹¹ And after that the other virgins came, saying, Master, master, Open to us.

²⁴ then he, who had received the one talent, came and said, Sir, I knew that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou didst not scatter; so,

⁴⁴ Then they also will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee?

²⁵ When the master of the house is raised up, and shall have shut the door and you begin to stand without and knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us, he will Answer and say to you, I do not know you, whence you are. ²⁶ Then you will begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. ²⁷ But he will say, I tell you I do not know you whence you are. Depart from me all you workers of iniquity.

¹³ You call me The teacher and the master; and you say right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, the master and the teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet; ¹⁵ for I have set you an example, that you may do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Verily, verily I say to you, The servant is not greater than his master; nor is a missionary greater than he who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, happy are you if you practise them.

⁷ Be not deceived. God is not to be imposed on; for whatever a man soweth, that he shall reap.

³ Incline your ears and follow in my paths; hearken to me and your soul shall live on good things; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant; the gracious promises to David which are faithful.

²⁴ Therefore whoever heareth these words of mine and putteth them in practice, him I will compare to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock. ²⁵ When the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock. ²⁶ But whoever heareth these words of mine, and doth not put them in practice, may be compared to a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ When the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; it fell, and great was the ruin thereof.

²⁸ Come to me all ye who labour and are heavily burdened and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take upon you my yoke and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

⁵⁰ for whoever will do the will of my father who is in heaven, the same is my brother and sister and mother.

⁵ While he was yet speaking, behold! a bright cloud overshadowed them; and lo! from the cloud, a voice, saying, This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye him.

¹³ By the rocky ground are meant those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary believers, and in time of trial apostatise.

²⁸ Whereupon he said, Nay, rather happy they who hear the word of God and keep it.

²⁶ If any one cometh to me, and slighteth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, nay, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

⁴⁰ yet you will not come to me that you may have life.

³⁷ All that the Father giveth me, will come to me. And him who cometh to me I will not reject.

⁴⁴ No one can come to me, unless the Father, who hath sent me, draw him. And as for me, I will raise him up at the last day. ⁴⁵ It is written in the prophets, They shall be all taught of God. Every one therefore who hath heard and learned from the Father, cometh to me.

⁵² Thereupon the Jews said to him, Now we know that thou art possessed by a demon. Abraham is dead and the prophets; yet thou sayest, I any one keep this doctrine of mine, he shall never taste death.

²⁷ My sheep, as I told you, hearken to my voice and I know them, and they follow me:

¹⁷ If you know these things, happy are you if you practise them.

¹⁵ If you love me keep my commandments,

²¹ He who hath my commandments and keepeth them; he. it is who loveth me. And he who loveth me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. ²² Judas [not the Iscariot] saith to him, Master, How is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?" ²³ Jesus in reply, said to him, If any one love me, he will keep my word and my Father will love him; and we will come to him and make an abode with him. ²⁴ He who doth not love me, doth not keep my words. Now the word which you hear is not mine only, but the Fathers who sent me.

⁹ As the Father hath loved me, so I have loved you. Continue ye in my love. ¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you shall continue in my love; as I have kept my Father's commandments and continue in his love. ¹¹ These things I have spoken to you that my joy may continue, and that your joy may be complete. ¹² This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. ¹³ No one hath greater love than this, that he would lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do what I command you.

⁷ to them who by perseverance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour, and incorruption [he will grant] everlasting life; ⁸ but for them who are contentious and disobedient to the truth and in subjection to unrighteousness, there will be indignation and wrath, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man who doth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek; ¹⁰ but glory and honour and peace, for every one who doth good; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

⁹ and being consecrated became the author of everlasting salvation to all who obey him,]

²² and be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ²³ For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a glass. ²⁴ For having viewed himself, and gone away, he instantly forgot what manner of person he was. ²⁵ But whosoever hath looked carefully into the perfect law of this liberty, and continued therein; he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of work, shall by his doing be happy.

⁴ to whom you are come as to a living stone, by men indeed rejected, but with God chosen and precious,

¹⁰ Therefore, brethren, use the more diligence to make your call and election sure; for if you practise these you will never fall;

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that every one who practiseth righteousness is born of him.

⁷ Children, let no one deceive you. He who practiseth righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.

¹⁴ Happy they who perform his commandments that they may have access to the tree of life and enter by the gates into the city:

¹⁵ When Jacob had eaten and was filled, Then he who was beloved began to kick; He grew fat, waxed thick, and became corpulent, Then he forsook the God who made him; And apostatised from God his saviour.

¹⁸ The God who begot thee, thou hast forsaken, And hast forgot the God who nourished thee;

³¹ For their gods are not like our God; And our enemies are without understanding.

² Because there is none holy like the Lord, And none is righteous like our God, There is none holy besides thee.

² he said in a psalm; Lord, Thou art my rock and my fortress. It is he who delivered me; he shall be my God.

⁵ Because troubles of death have surrounded me; Floods of iniquity have filled me with horror;

³² Who is mighty, besides the Lord? Who can build up, but our God?

⁴⁷ Live the Lord! and blessed be he, my guard! Let my God, my safeguard, be exalted;

²⁵ In a passing tempest a wicked man vanisheth; but the righteous turn aside and are safe forever.

⁴ who art to everlasting, the Mighty, the Eternal God,

¹⁶ Therefore thus saith the Sovereign Lord; behold I lay for the foundation of Sion a stone of inestimable worth; a chosen, precious corner stone for the foundations of it, and he who believeth shall not be ashamed.

¹⁹ and they from the west shall revere the name of the Lord; and they from the rising of the sun, his glorious name. For he will come like an impetuous stream; for the wrath of the Lord will come with fury.

³³ These things I have spoken to you, that you may have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble; but take courage: I have overcome the world.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of the Christ? Shall tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ [As it is written, "For thy sake we are killed all the day long, And accounted as sheep for slaughter" ³⁷ We indeed in all these things are more than conquerors by means of him who hath loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

¹⁰ According to the favour of God granted to me, I, like a skilful architect, have laid a foundation, and another buildeth upon it. ¹⁹ Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth firm, having this inscription""The Lord knoweth them who are his;" and "Let every one who nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

¹⁰ Now the day of the Lord will come, as a thief at night, when the heavens with a crashing roar shall pass away, and the elements shall be dissolved by fire, and the earth, and all the works thereon, shall be burned up. ¹¹ Therefore as all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness, ¹² expecting, and eagerly desiring, the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens, all on fire, shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with intense heat, ¹³ and we, according to his promise, expect new heavens, and a new earth in which dwelleth righteousness! ¹⁴ As you therefore, beloved, expect these things, use all diligence to be found at peace with him, without spot and without blemish;

²⁸ And now, children, abide in him, that when he shall appear we may have confidence, and not be made ashamed by him at his coming.

²⁴ Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you, without blemish, before his glory with great joy

¹⁴ and the heaven recoiled like a scroll rolled up; and every mountain and island were moved from their places, ¹⁵ and the kings of the earth and the nobles and the rich and the chief commanders and the under officers and every bondman and every freeman hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, ¹⁶ saying to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall upon us, and hide us from the face of him who is sitting on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, ¹⁷ for the great day of His wrath is come and who is able to stand?"

¹⁸ He who walketh righteously will be helped: but he who walketh in crooked ways will be entangled.

¹⁶ In regard to this word which thou hast spoken to us in the name of the Lord, ¹⁷ we will not hearken to thee; for we will continue to perform every word which shall proceed from our mouth to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her; as we and our fathers and our kings and our chiefs did in the cities of Juda and in the streets of Jerusalem; for we had then plenty of bread and were in happy circumstances and saw no evils:

³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;

¹⁴ and I will not punish your daughters, when they commit whoredom, nor your daughters in law when they commit adultery. Because they conversed with harlots and sacrificed with prostitutes, therefore my people, who were without understanding, were entangled with fornication.

⁴³ When the unclean spirit hath gone out of the man, it walketh through dry places seeking rest, but doth not find it. ⁴⁴ Then it saith I will return to my habitation from which I came out. And when it is come, it findeth it unoccupied, swept and furnished. ⁴⁵ Then it goeth and bringeth with it seven other spirits worse than itself, and they enter and dwell there. So the last state of that man is worse than the first. Thus also will it be with this wicked generation.

²⁰ And that sown on rocky ground denoteth him, who, upon hearing the word, receiveth it at first with joy, ²¹ but not having it rooted in him, it is only temporary; and when tribulation and persecution cometh on account of the word, he is immediately stumbled. ²² And that sown among thorns denoteth him, who heareth the word, but worldly care and the delusion of riches choak the word and it becometh unfruitful.

³⁰ And he in reply said, I will not. But afterwards he repented and went. And coming to the second, he ordered him in like manner; and he in reply said, I will, sir; but did not go.

³ Observe then and do whatever they enjoin you: but do not act as they do. For they say and do not practise.

¹⁰ And many will then be stumbled and will deliver up one another and hate one another.

¹⁷ but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary; so that when tribulation, or persecution cometh because of the word, they are instantly stumbled.

⁴⁶ Now why do you call me, master, master, when ye do not what I command?

⁵ The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some fell on the highway and was trampled under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. ⁶ And some fell on rocky ground, and having sprung up, it withered for want of moisture. ⁷ And some fell among thorns, and the thorns springing up with it, choaked it.

¹² Now I say to you, the condition of Sodom will be more tolerable on that day than the condition of that city. ¹³ Alas for thee, Chorazin! Alas for thee, Bethsaida! for if the miracles which have been performed in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. ¹⁵ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to the skies, shall be thrust down to Hades. ¹⁶ He who hearkeneth to you, hearkeneth to me: and he who rejecteth you, rejecteth me; and he who rejecteth me, rejecteth him who sent me.

²⁷ And as for those enemies of mine who would not have me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.

² Every branch in me which beareth not fruit, he loppeth off; and every branch which beareth fruit he cleaneth to make it more fruitful.

²⁹ For this I know, that after my departure there will enter in among you grievous wolves, not sparing the flock.

⁵ therefore not being able to bear any longer, I sent to know your faith, for fear the tempter might have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

²⁶ For if we sin wilfully, after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more any sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain dreadful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. ²⁸ Whoever hath set at naught the law of Moses dieth without mercy, on the evidence of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ Of how much greater punishment, think ye, will he be thought worthy, who hath trampled upon the Son of God, and accounted the blood of the covenant, by which he was sanctified, a common thing, and treated contemptuously the spirit of grace?

Such a one's religion is vain.

¹⁷ Just so it is in respect to this belief, if it hath not works; being by itself it is dead. ¹⁸ One indeed may say, thou hast belief, and I have works. Shew me thy belief by thy works. As for me, I will shew thee my belief by my works. ¹⁹ Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well. The demons also believe and tremble. ²⁰ But wouldst thou, vain man, know that belief without works is dead? ²¹ Was not Abraham, our father, justified by works when he offered up his son Isaak on the altar? ²² Thou seest that his belief co-operated with his works, and by his works his belief was perfected. ²³ And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, "Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him for righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God. ²⁴ You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by belief only. ²⁵ In like manner also, was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, having secreted the messengers, and sent them out another way? ²⁶ For as the body without spirit is dead, so belief without works is dead also.

⁵ therefore, having on your part used all diligence for the very same purpose, add to your faith fortitude; and to fortitude, knowledge; ⁶ and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, perseverance; and to perseverance, piety; ⁷ and to piety, brotherly affection; and to brotherly affection, universal love; ⁸ for these being in you, and abounding, dispose you to be neither idle nor unfruitful for the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁹ for he who is without these is blind, having closed his eyes, having contracted a forgetfulness of the purification of his past sins.

²⁰ For if alter fleeing from the pollutions of the world by an acknowledgment of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, any are again entangled and overcome by them, the last state of such persons is worse than the first.

³ Now by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments. ⁴ He who saith I know him, and doth not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

¹⁹ They went out from us; but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.
