¹ So Jesus, continuing his discourse, addressed them again in parables, saying, ² The reign of the heavens may be compared to a temporal king, who made a marriage feast for his son. ³ And he sent his servants to call them who were invited to the wedding, but they would not come. ⁴ Again he sent other servants, saying, Tell them who have been invited, Behold I have prepared my dinner. My bullocks and my fatlings are killed and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast. ⁵ But they turned away with indifference, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise ⁶ and the rest seized his servants, insulted, and slew them. ⁷ When the king heard this he was incensed, and sent forth his armies, and destroyed the murderers, and burned their city. ⁸ Then he saith to his servants, The wedding is indeed ready. but they who have been invited are unworthy; ⁹ Go ye therefor, to the highways, and invite to the wedding as many as you meet with. ¹⁰ Accordingly the servants went out to the highway and assembled all that they met, bad and good. And the wedding was plentifully supplied with guests. ¹¹ And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment, and saith to him, ¹² Companion, how camest thou hither without having on a wedding garment. And he was struck speechless. ¹³ Then the king said to the attendants, Bind his hands and feet and carry him out and cast him into the outer darkness. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there. ¹⁴ For there are many called, but few chosen. ¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and consulted how they might ensnare him by a discourse. ¹⁶ So they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, We know that thou art true and teachest the way of God truly, and carest for no one. For thou respectest not the persons of men. ¹⁷ Tell us therefore what thou thinkest. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me? ¹⁹ Shew me the tribute money. So they brought him a deniar, ²⁰ then he saith to them, Whose image and inscription is this? ²¹ They say to him, Caesar's. Then he saith to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. ²² Upon hearing this they were struck with surprise, and left him and went away. ²³ On the same day there came to him Sadducees, who say, There is no future state. And they asked him, ²⁴ saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother. ²⁵ Now there were with us seven brothers. And the first married a wife and died; and having no children, he left his wife for his brother. ²⁶ In like manner also the second and the third, even to the seventh. ²⁷ And last of all, the woman also died: ²⁸ in the future state therefore, whose wife shall she be of the seven? For they all married her. ²⁹ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. ³⁰ For in the future state, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. ³¹ But in respect to the revival of the dead. Have you not read what was spoken to you: by God, saying, ³² "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob," God is not the God of the dead; but of the living. ³³ When the people heard this they were astonished at his manner of teaching. ³⁴ Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they flocked about him for the same purpose. ³⁵ And one of them, an expounder of the law, with a view to 36 try him, asked him this question, ³⁶ Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? ³⁷ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ³⁸ This is the first and great commandment. ³⁹ And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets. ⁴¹ Now while the Pharisees were together, Jesus asked them, ⁴² saying, What think ye concerning the Christ? Whose Son is he? They say to him, David's. ⁴³ He saith to them, How then doth David by the spirit call him Lord; saying, ⁴⁴ "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool." ⁴⁵ If then David calleth him Lord: how is he his son? ⁴⁶ And none could answer him a word. Nor did any one presume from that day forward to ask him any more questions.

¹⁵ And to them Jesus said, Can bridemen mourn, while the bridegroom is with them? The days indeed will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them and then they will fast. ¹⁶ No one mendeth an old garment with a patch of undressed cloth; for such a patch teareth the garment and maketh a greater rent. ¹⁷ Neither do men put new wine into old leathern bottles, otherwise the bottles burst, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles are lost. But new wine is put into new bottles, so both are preserved.

⁴³ When the unclean spirit hath gone out of the man, it walketh through dry places seeking rest, but doth not find it. ⁴⁴ Then it saith I will return to my habitation from which I came out. And when it is come, it findeth it unoccupied, swept and furnished. ⁴⁵ Then it goeth and bringeth with it seven other spirits worse than itself, and they enter and dwell there. So the last state of that man is worse than the first. Thus also will it be with this wicked generation.

³ and he spake many things to them in parables, saying, Behold the sower went out to sow; ⁴ and as he was sowing, some grains fell on the highway and the birds came and devoured them. ⁵ And others fell on rocky ground, where they had little earth; these sprang up immediately, because they had no depth of soil; ⁶ but soon as the sun arose they were scorched; and for want of root withered away: ⁷ and some fell among the thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choaked them. ⁸ And some fell on good ground and yielded increase; some an hundred; some, sixty; and some, thirty fold. ⁹ Whoever hath ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁰ Then the disciples accosted him, saying, Why speakest thou to them in parables? ¹¹ And he in reply said to them, To you it hath been granted to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens; but to them it hath not been granted.

¹ For the reign of the heavens is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. ² And having agreed with some labourers for a deniar a day, he sent them to his vineyard. ³ And going out about the third hour he saw some standing in the market place, unemployed, ⁴ and said to them, Go ye also to the vineyard and I will give you what is reasonable. So they went. ⁵ Again about the sixth and ninth hour he went out and did the same. ⁶ And having gone out about the eleventh hour, he found others standing unemployed, and saith to them, Why have you stood here all the day unemployed? ⁷ They say to him, Because no one hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also to the vineyard and you shall receive what is reasonable. ⁸ And in the evening the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first. ⁹ So they who had been hired at the eleventh hour, came and received even one a deniar. ¹⁰ And when the first hired came, they expected to receive more; but they also received everyone a deniar. ¹¹ And when they received it, they murmured against the householder, ¹² saying, These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden, and the heat of the day. ¹³ But he in reply said to one of them, Companion! I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a deniar: ¹⁴ take what is thine and go thy way. It is my will to give this last as much as to thee. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I please with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am good? ¹⁶ So the last shall be first, and the first last. For there are many called, but few chosen.

²⁸ But what think you? A man had two sons. And coming to the first, he said, Son, go work today in my vineyard.

³⁰ And he in reply said, I will not. But afterwards he repented and went. And coming to the second, he ordered him in like manner; and he in reply said, I will, sir; but did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him. And though you saw this, you did not afterwards repent and believe him. ³³ Hear another parable. There was a certain landlord who planted a vineyard and hedged it around, and dug therein a wine lake, and built a tower, and let it to tenants and went to a distant country. ³⁴ And when the fruit season approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to receive the fruits of it. ³⁵ But the tenants seizing his servants, beat one and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants in greater number than the first, and they treated them in the same manner. ³⁷ At last he sent to them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come let us kill him and keep possession of his inheritance. ³⁹ So, seizing him, they turned him out of the vineyard and slew him. ⁴⁰ Now when the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to these tenants? ⁴¹ They say to him, "Wretches! he will put them to a wretched death: and his vineyard he will let to others; who will render him the fruits in their seasons." ⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes." ⁴³ Therefore I say to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation producing the fruits thereof. ⁴⁴ And he who falleth on that stone will be bruised, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ⁴⁵ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees, when they heard his parables, knew that he spake of them: ⁴⁶ but when they sought to seize him, they were afraid of the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet.

³³ And with many such parables he spake the word to them as they were able to hear it: ³⁴ but without a parable he did not speak to them. And in private he explained all to his disciples.

¹⁰ he said, To you it is granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, which to others are couched under parables, so that they see and do not see, and they hear and do not understand.

¹⁶ Whereupon he said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many.

¹⁰ Hear, daughter, and behold, and incline thine ear, and forget thy people and thy father's house. ¹¹ Because the king is enamoured of thy beauty; because he is thy Lord; ¹² when the daughters of Tyre bow down to him with gifts, the richest people of the land will supplicate thy favour. ¹³ All this honour is for the daughter of the king of Hesebon herself, she is surrounded with chain works of gold, and embroidery. ¹⁴ The virgins in her train shall be introduced to the king. They who are related to her shall be introduced to thee. ¹⁵ They shall be introduced with gladness and rejoicing; They shall be brought to the temple of the king. ¹⁶ Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee; these thou shalt make princes over all the land.

²⁴ Another parable he stated to them, saying, The reign of the heavens may be compared to a man sowing good seed in his field.

³¹ Another parable he stated to them, saying, "The reign of the heavens is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field, ³² which is indeed the smallest of all seeds, but which, when grown, is the largest of the herbs and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and take shelter among the branches." ³³ Another parable he stated to them, saying, The reign of the heavens is like leaven which a woman took and covered up in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

⁴⁴ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like treasure hid in the field, which, when a man found, he concealed, and for joy thereof goeth away and selleth all that he hath, and purchaseth that field. ⁴⁵ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant in quest of fine pearls, ⁴⁶ who, having met with one of great value, went and sold all that he had and purchased it. ⁴⁷ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like a sweep net cast into the sea, which enclosed fishes of every kind,

¹ Now with respect to this, the reign of the heavens may be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. ² And five of them were prudent and five foolish. ³ They who were foolish took their lamps, but did not take oil with them. ⁴ But the prudent took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ And while the bridegroom tarried they all became drowsy and fell asleep. ⁶ And at midnight there was a cry, Behold the bridegroom is coming; Go out and meet him. ⁷ Then all the virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said to the prudent, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. ⁹ In reply to which the prudent said, Perhaps there will not be enough for us and you. Therefore go rather to them who sell, and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and they who were ready went in with him to the wedding, and the door was shut. ¹¹ And after that the other virgins came, saying, Master, master, Open to us. ¹² But he in reply, said, Verily I say to you, I do not know you. ¹³ Watch therefore, because you do not know the day, nor the hour, when the son of man cometh. ¹⁴ For he is like a man who, intending to travel, called his servants and committed to them his effects,

¹⁶ Whereupon he said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many. ¹⁷ But when he sent out his servants at supper time, to say to them who were invited; Come, for all things are now ready; ¹⁸ they all, from one [motive] began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. I pray thee make my excuse. ¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them: I pray thee make my excuse. ²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot go. ²¹ So the servant came and told his master these things. And the master of the family, being incensed, said to his servant, Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind. ²² And when the servant said, Master, I have done as thou didst command, and still there is room; ²³ the master said to the servant, Go out to the highways and hedges, and press people to come that my house may be full. ²⁴ For I say to you, None of the men who have been invited shall taste of my supper.

²⁹ He is the bridegroom, who hath the bride. But the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth exceedingly on the account of the bridegroom's voice. This joy of mine therefore, is complete. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease.

² for I am jealous of you with a godly jealousy. For I fitted you for one husband only, that I might present you as a chaste virgin to the Christ;

²⁴ but as the congregation is subject to the Christ, so let wives be to their husbands in every thing. ²⁵ Husbands love your wives, even as the Christ loved the congregation, and gave himself up for it, ²⁶ that having purified it with the bath of the water, he might hallow it; indeed ²⁷ that he might present it to himself as the glorious congregation, having neither spot, nor wrinkle, nor any defect whatever; but that it may be holy and without blemish. ²⁸ In the same manner husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loveth his wife, loveth himself. ²⁹ Now no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord doth the congregation, ³⁰ because we are members of his body; of his flesh and of his bones. ³¹ Instead of this, "a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they two will be one flesh," ³² this is the great mystery, I mean in regard to Christ and the congregation.

⁷ let us rejoice and exult with joy and ascribe to him the glory; for the marriage of the lamb is come and his spouse hath made herself ready ⁸ and it hath been granted her, that she should be arrayed in a cotton [robe] clean and white for this cotton is the righteous acts of the saints. ⁹ Then [the angel] saith to me, Write, Happy they who are invited to the marriage supper of the lamb! then he saith to me, These are the true words of God.

¹³ So when you enter the city you will find him there, before he goeth up to the Bama to eat. For the people will not eat till he come; for he blesseth the sacrifice, and after that the guests eat. Now therefore go up, for to-day you will find him.

¹¹ God the Lord will issue an order to them, who publish good news to the mighty host;

¹⁰ for I am the Lord thy God; who brought thee up from the land of Egypt. Open thy mouth wide and I will fill it. ¹¹ But my people did not hearken to my voice; nor did Israel attend to me. ¹² Therefore I gave them up to the devices of their own hearts. Let them walk in their own devices.

²⁴ seeing I have called and you have not answered: and though I continued my speech, you did not attend: ²⁵ but set at naught my counsels and disregarded my reproofs: ²⁶ therefore I will laugh at your calamity; and mock when your destruction cometh. ²⁷ Yes, when tumult shall suddenly come upon you; and destruction like a whirlwind shall be at hand; even when tribulation and siege approach you; or when destruction is advancing upon you. ²⁸ For when you call upon me I will not listen to you. The wicked may seek me, but they shall not find me. ²⁹ For they hated wisdom and did not chuse the word of the Lord: ³⁰ nor would they attend to my counsels, but contemned my reproofs: ³¹ Let them eat, therefore, the fruits of their own way; and be filled with their own iniquity. ³² For, because they wronged infants they shall be slain: and a rigorous inquest shall destroy the wicked.

¹ Wisdom hath built herself a house, and fixed underneath it seven pillars. ² She hath slain her victims. She hath mixed her wine for the cup and furnished her table. ³ She hath sent out her servants, and with a loud proclamation hath given an invitation to her entertainment, saying,

¹⁵ Thus saith the Lord, Lord. The Holy One of Israel, when thou shalt return sighing, then thou shalt be saved, and thou shalt know in what a situation thou wast, when thou didst trust in these vanities. Your strength was vain, yet you would not hearken,

¹ HO! ye who are thirsting, come to water! And ye who have no money, come buy and eat, without money and without price, wine and the choicest bread. ² Why are you expending money and labour for that which will not satisfy? Hearken to me and you shall eat good things; and your soul will be regaled with delicacies.

¹⁶ Thus saith the Lord, Stand in the highways and take a view and inquire for the ancient paths of the Lord, and see which is the good way and walk in it, and you shall find a purification for your souls: but they said, "We will not go." ¹⁷ I have set watchmen over you; hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, "We will not listen."

⁴ and I have sent to you my servants the prophets; rising early and sending them, though you have not hearkened nor inclined your ears;

¹⁵ Though I have sent to you my servants the prophets; saying, Turn ye, every one from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after strange gods to serve them, and you shall dwell in the land which I gave to you and your fathers; yet you have not inclined your ears nor hearkened.

² The more I called them, the more they ran from my presence. They sacrificed to the Baalim s, and burned incense to graven images;

⁷ [p] His people are indeed in imminent danger of being removed from their dwelling, will God be provoked against his honours so as never to exalt him?

⁷ Be struck with awe, at the presence of the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is near at hand. Because the Lord hath prepared his sacrifice and hallowed his guests;

² "Reform; for the reign of the heavens is at hand."

⁶ but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel: ⁷ and as you go proclaim, saying, The reign of the heavens is at hand.

³⁴ And when the fruit season approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to receive the fruits of it.

³⁷ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! how often have I desired to gather thy children even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; but you would not!

⁷ he calleth to him the twelve, and began to send them forth, by two and two, and gave them power over the unclean spirits; ⁸ and ordered them to take nothing for the journey, but only a staff; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse; ⁹ but to be shod with sandals; and not to put on two coats. ¹⁰ And he said to them, Wherever you enter a house, continue there till you leave that place. ¹¹ And whosoever will not receive you, nor hearken to you, when you depart thence shake off the dirt which is under your feet, as a testimony against them. Verily I say to you, the condition of Sodom and Gomorra will be more tolerable in a day of vengeance, than the condition of that city.

¹ When he, having called together the twelve disciples, gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure diseases; ² and was sending them to proclaim the reign of God, and to heal the sick; ³ he said to them, Take nothing for the journey; neither staves, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money, nor two coats apiece. ⁴ And into whatever house you enter, abide there till you leave the place. ⁵ And wherever they will not receive you, when you are leaving that city, shake off the dust from your feet, for a testimony against them. ⁶ Accordingly, they departed and went through the villages, proclaiming the glad tidings, and performing cures every where.

³⁴ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! How often would I have gathered thy children, as a hen doth her brood under her wings; and ye would not.

¹⁵ Upon hearing this, one of the guests said to him, Happy is he who eateth bread in the kingdom of God. ¹⁶ Whereupon he said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many. ¹⁷ But when he sent out his servants at supper time, to say to them who were invited; Come, for all things are now ready;

²⁸ At this he was angry and would not go in. His father therefore went out and entreated him.

²⁷ And as for those enemies of mine who would not have me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.

⁴⁰ yet you will not come to me that you may have life.

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds they were filled with zeal and contradicted what was spoken by Paul; contradicting and reviling.

²¹ But concerning Israel he saith, "I have stretched out my hands all the day long to a disobedient and gainsaying people."

²⁵ See that you do not reject him who speaketh. For if they did not escape who rejected him who gave forth oracles on earth, how much less shall we who reject him who is from heaven,

¹⁷ Now the spirit and the bride say, Come; and let him who heareth say Come. And let every one who thirsteth come; and let every one who is willing take of the water of life at free cost.

¹⁷ Though they refused to go in, and were unmindful of thy wonders which thou hadst done among them; though they hardened their neck, and set up a head to return to their bondage in Egypt, yet thou who art a God merciful and gracious, long suffering and of great kindness, didst not forsake them utterly.

⁵ for thou, Lord, art kind and gentle, and plenteous in mercy to all who invoke thee.

¹ I have come to my garden, my sister spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spices: I have eaten my bread with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, friends; drink; yes drink plentifully brethren.

³⁶ Again he sent other servants in greater number than the first, and they treated them in the same manner.

⁸ Then he saith to his servants, The wedding is indeed ready. but they who have been invited are unworthy;

¹ After these things, the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them, two and two; before him, to every city and village whither he himself was soon to go; ² and he said to them, The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Entreat therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers for his harvest. ³ Go ye. Behold I send you forth like lambs among wolves. ⁴ Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor sandals. And salute no one by the way. ⁵ And into whatever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house. ⁶ And if the son of peace be there, your peace will rest upon it; but if not, it will return to you. And ⁷ continue in the same family, eating and drinking such things as they have. For the labourer is worthy of his wages. Go not from one family to another. ⁸ And into whatever city you enter, when they entertain you eat such things as are set before you. ⁹ And heal the sick therein, and say to them, The reign of God is come near to you. ¹⁰ But whatever city you enter, when they do not receive you, go out into the streets thereof and say, ¹¹ The very dust of this city of yours which cleaveth to us, we wipe off for you: nevertheless, know this, that the reign of God hath come nigh unto you. ¹² Now I say to you, the condition of Sodom will be more tolerable on that day than the condition of that city. ¹³ Alas for thee, Chorazin! Alas for thee, Bethsaida! for if the miracles which have been performed in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. ¹⁵ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to the skies, shall be thrust down to Hades. ¹⁶ He who hearkeneth to you, hearkeneth to me: and he who rejecteth you, rejecteth me; and he who rejecteth me, rejecteth him who sent me.

¹⁷ But when he sent out his servants at supper time, to say to them who were invited; Come, for all things are now ready;

⁴⁶ and he said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved the Christ to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day; ⁴⁷ and that for his name reformation and remission of sins should be proclaimed to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

⁵⁰ Such is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that whoever shall eat of it shall not die. ⁵¹ I am that living bread which came down from heaven. If any one eat of this bread he shall live forever. Now the bread which I will give is this flesh of mine, which I will give for the life of the world. ⁵² Upon this the Jews debated among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? ⁵³ Therefore Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you. ⁵⁴ He who eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath an everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵ For this flesh of mine is food indeed; and this blood of mine is indeed drink. ⁵⁶ He who eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me and I in him. ⁵⁷ As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he. who eateth me, even he will live by me.

⁸ But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and you shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

¹⁹ Now they who had been dispersed by reason of the distress which arose about Stephen, had travelled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none but Jews only. ²⁰ But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who went into Antioch and spoke to the Greeks, proclaiming the glad tidings of the Lord Jesus.

⁴⁶ Whereupon Paul and Barnabas with great freedom of speech said, It was necessary that the word of God should be first spoken to you. But since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of this everlasting life, behold we turn to the Gentiles

¹⁷ And it came to pass after three days that Paul sent for them who were the chief men of the Jews, and when assembled he said to them, Men, brethren, though I have done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, I was delivered up a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. ¹⁸ These when they examined me, would have set me at liberty, because I had done nothing that deserved death. ¹⁹ But the Jews opposing this, I was forced to appeal to Caesar, not that I have any thing to lay to the charge of my nation. ²⁰ For this cause, therefore, I have sent for you that I might see you and speak with you. For on account of the hope of Israel, I am bound with this chain. ²¹ To this they replied, We have neither received any letters concerning thee from Judea, nor hath any of the brethren who have arrived, related or spoken any harm of thee. ²² But we should be glad to hear what thou thinkest; for with respect to this sect we know that it is every where spoken against. ²³ So having set him a day, they came to him at his lodging, in greater numbers; to whom he explained the kingdom of God, testifying and endeavouring to reconcile them to the things concerning Jesus, from the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning till evening. ²⁴ And some indeed were reconciled by what were spoken, and some disbelieved. ²⁵ And being at variance among themselves they broke up, upon Paul's saying one word, that the holy spirit had spoken well to our fathers by the prophet Esaias, ²⁶ saying, "Go and say to the people, Hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand; and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive; ²⁷ for the heart of this people is callous, and their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, that for a while they may not see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn that I may heal them." ²⁸ Be it known therefore to you, that this salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will hearken to it. ²⁹ And when he had said this the Jews departed, debating warmly among themselves. ³⁰ And Paul continued two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came to him, ³¹ proclaiming the reign of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all freedom and without restraint.

³² He who spared not his own son but delivered him up for us all, how will he not also with him freely grant us all things?

⁷ Purge out therefore the old leaven that you may be a new mass as you are unleavened. For Christ our Paschal lamb is indeed slain for us, ⁸ so that we should keep the festival, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of wickedness and malignity; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

¹⁴ Upon this Lot went out and spoke to his sons in law, who had bethrothed his daughters and said, Arise and depart from this place; for the Lord is going to destroy this city. But he seemed to his sons in law to be mocking.

³⁴ Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil pottage. And when he had eaten and drunk he arose and went away. Thus did Esau undervalue the rights of primogeniture.

²⁴ When they despised the pleasant land and did not confide in his word: ²⁵ but murmured in their tents; and hearkened not to the voice of the Lord:

⁷ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And all who practise this have good understanding. And piety towards God is the beginning of discernment: but the wicked despise wisdom and instruction.

²⁴ seeing I have called and you have not answered: and though I continued my speech, you did not attend: ²⁵ but set at naught my counsels and disregarded my reproofs:

²² And that sown among thorns denoteth him, who heareth the word, but worldly care and the delusion of riches choak the word and it becometh unfruitful.

³⁸ For as in those days, before the deluge, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, till Noe entered the ark; ³⁹ and they did not know till the flood came and swept them all away; so will this coming of the son of man be.

¹⁸ they all, from one [motive] began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. I pray thee make my excuse. ¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them: I pray thee make my excuse. ²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot go.

²⁶ And as it was in the days of Noe, so will it be in the days of the son of man. ²⁷ They ate; they drank; they married, and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Just so it was also in the days of Lot. They ate; they drank; they bought; they sold; they planted; they built: ²⁹ but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. ³⁰ Even so will it be on the day when the son of man will be revealed. ³¹ On that day, whoever shall be on the house top, and his goods in the house, let him not come down to carry them away. And in like manner let not him who shall be in the field turn back to what is behind him. ³² Remember Lot's wife.

¹³ But others scoffingly said, They are filled with sweet wine.

²⁵ And while Paul was discoursing concerning justice and temperance, and the judgment to come, Felix, being terrified, said, Go thy way for the present, and when I find a convenient time I will send for thee:

⁴ Or dost thou contemn the riches of his gentleness and forbearance and long suffering, not considering that the gentleness of God is leading thee to a reformation?

⁶ For the bent of the flesh is death; but the bent of the spirit is life and peace.

⁹ But they who determine to be rich, fall headlong into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil; to gratify which, some have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁴ betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

³ how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation, which was first published by the Lord, and confirmed for us by them who heard him,

¹⁵ Love not the world nor the things in the world. If any one loveth the world, the love of the Father is not in him ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the desire of the eyes, and the pomp of this life are not of the Father, but are of the world.

¹⁰ Happy they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for the kingdom of the heavens is theirs. ¹¹ Happy are ye when men will revile and persecute you, and accuse you falsely of every evil thing on my account. ¹² Rejoice and exult triumphantly; for great will be your reward in heaven: for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

¹² And when you enter the house, salute the family. ¹³ And if the family be worthy, the peace you wish them will come upon them; but if they be not worthy, the peace you wish will rebound upon your selves. ¹⁴ And whosoever will not receive you, nor hear your words, when you leave that house or that city shake off the dust of your feet. ¹⁵ Verily I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorra in a day of judgment, than for that city. ¹⁶ Behold I send you forth like sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as the serpents and harmless as the doves. ¹⁷ And be upon your guard against these men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues; ¹⁸ and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and the nations.

²² And you will be hated by all men on the account of my name. But he who persevereth to the end shall be saved. ²³ Now when they persecute you in one city, flee to another. For, verily I say to you, before you shall have gone through all the cities of Israel, the son of man will come. ²⁴ The scholar is not greater than the teacher; nor the servant, than the master. ²⁵ It is enough for the scholar to be as his teacher; and the servant, as his master. If they have called the master of the family Beelzebub, how much more, his domestics.

³⁵ But the tenants seizing his servants, beat one and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants in greater number than the first, and they treated them in the same manner. ³⁷ At last he sent to them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come let us kill him and keep possession of his inheritance. ³⁹ So, seizing him, they turned him out of the vineyard and slew him.

³⁴ For this, behold I am about to send you prophets, wise men and Scribes: and some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth; from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say to you, All these things will come upon this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! how often have I desired to gather thy children even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; but you would not!

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. Now because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ²⁰ Remember the word which I spake to you. The servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my word, they will also keep yours.

² They will excommunicate you. Indeed a time is coming, when whosoever killeth you will think he doth an act of religious worship to God. ³ And these things they will do to you because they know neither the Father nor me.

¹ Now while they were speaking to the people; the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, ² displeased at their teaching the people and promulgating by Jesus the resurrection from the dead, came on them, ³ and laid hands on them, and put them in prison till the next day. For it was now evening.

⁴⁰ So to him they agreed: and having called in the apostles and scourged them, they charged them not to speak about the name of Jesus and dismissed them. ⁴¹ Thereupon they went from the presence of the Sanhedrim, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

⁵¹ O stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears Ye do always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? Indeed they have slain them who prophesied concerning the coming of that Righteous one, of whom you have now become the betrayers and murderers: ⁵³ you who have received the law through ranks of angels, but have not kept it. ⁵⁴ At hearing this they were cut to the heart and gnashed their teeth at him. ⁵⁵ But he being full of a holy spirit, having his eyes fixed towards heaven, beheld the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God: ⁵⁶ whereupon he said, Behold! I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God. ⁵⁷ At which they screamed aloud, and stopped their ears and rushed upon him with one accord.

¹ Now Saul continued to express satisfaction at his death: and there was at that time a great persecution against the congregation which was at Jerusalem; and all, except the apostles, were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria.

¹⁴ For you, brethren, became imitators of the congregations of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. Because you suffered from your countrymen the same treatment as they did from the Jews ¹⁵ [from those indeed who slew the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and persecuted us, and who please not God, and are in opposition to all men,

⁴⁹ The Lord will bring against thee a nation from afar; from the extremity of the earth, with the impetuosity of an eagle; A nation whose voice thou shalt not understand; ⁵⁰ a nation of an unblushing countenance, which will not respect the person of an elder, nor compassionate a youth. ⁵¹ And it shall devour the increase of thy cattle, and the products of thy land, so as not to leave thee corn, wine, oil, herds or flocks, until it hath destroyed thee, ⁵² and wasted thee in thy cities; until they have demolished thy high, and strong walls, in which thou hast placed thy confidence, throughout thy whole land. And when he shall afflict thee in thy cities which he hath given thee; ⁵³ in thy siege, and in the affliction, with which thine enemy shall afflict thee, thou shalt eat the offspring of thy body; the flesh of thy sons, and thy daughters, whom he gave thee. ⁵⁴ The tender, and very delicate man who is with thee, will look with an evil eye on his brother, and on the wife in his bosom, and the remaining children which may be left him, ⁵⁵ so as not to give one of them any of the flesh of his sons, which he may be eating, because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in that affliction of thine with which thine enemies will afflict thee, in all thy cities. ⁵⁶ And the tender, and very delicate woman among you, whose foot never ventured to tread the ground because of her delicateness, and effeminacy will look with an evil eye on her husband in her bosom, and on her son, and her daughter, ⁵⁷ even the female infant she bore, or the male child which she may have brought forth; for on the account of the want of all things, she will eat these secretly in thy siege, and in that affliction of thine with which thine enemy will afflict thee in thy cities. ⁵⁸ If thou wilt not hearken to do all the words of this law, which are written in this book, to fear this glorious, this wonderful name, The Lord Thy God, ⁵⁹ the Lord will make thy plagues, and the plagues of thy seed, wonderful beyond conception; he will make them great, and marvellous, and thy diseases sore, and lasting, ⁶⁰ and will bring upon thee all the affliction of Egypt; that grievous affliction which thou didst dread on their account, and they shall cleave to thee. ⁶¹ The Lord will also bring upon thee every sickness, and every plague, which is not written, and every one which is written in this book of the law, until he root thee out. ⁶² And you shall be left few in number, instead of being, as you were, like the stars of heaven for multitude. Because thou didst not hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, ⁶³ therefore it shall come to pass, that as the Lord delighted in you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the Lord will rejoice over you, in rooting you out; and you shall be removed speedily from the land to which thou art going to take possession of it. ⁶⁴ And the Lord thy God will scatter thee among all the nations, from one extremity of the earth to the other; and thou shalt there serve other gods; stocks and stones, which neither thou, nor thy fathers have known. ⁶⁵ But even among these nations he will not give thee rest, nor shall there be any rest for the sole of thy foot. Indeed the Lord will give thee there a strange trembling heart, and failing eyes, and a desponding soul, ⁶⁶ and thy life shall hang in suspence before thine eyes, and thou shalt be in terror, day and night, and have no assurance of thy life. ⁶⁷ In the morning thou wilt say; How will it be with me in the evening! And in the evening thou wilt say, How may it be with me in the morning! on account of the terror of thy heart with which thou shalt be affrighted, and on account of the sights of thine eyes which thou shalt see. ⁶⁸ And the Lord will send thee back into Egypt, in ships, [by the way which I ordered thou shalt see it no more:] and thou shalt there be exposed to sale to your enemies, for bond men and bond women, and there will be no purchaser.

⁵ Ho! Assyrians! The rod of my wrath, even mine anger is in their hands, ⁶ I will send this anger of mine to a lawless nation; and I will order this people of mine to gather spoil and take the prey, and to trample down cities and lay them in the dust. ⁷ But he did not harbour such thoughts; nor did he reason thus in his mind; but his mind will prompt him to destroy nations not a few.

² [J] On a mount in the plain, erect a standard; raise the voice to them; beckon with the hand. Open princes! ³ it is I who command. It is I, who am leading these on. Giants are coming to execute my wrath, rejoicing and at the same time arrogant. ⁴ [p] A sound of many nations on the mountains! A tumultuous sound of many nations. A sound of kings and nations gathered together! the Lord of hosts hath issued orders to a nation trained for battle. ⁵ They are come from a far distant country; from the extreme butment of heaven; the Lord and his trained warriors, to destroy all that inhabited land.

²⁰ [J] Thou art dispersing for rne implements oi' war, but in thee I will disperse nations and remove kings out of thee; ²¹ and in thee I will disperse the horse and his rider; ²² and in thee I will disperse chariots and charioteers; and in thee I will disperse the youth and the virgin; and in thee I will disperse the husband and the wife; ²³ and in thee I will disperse the shepherd and the flock; and in thee I will disperse the husbandman and his husbandry; and in thee I will disperse the generals and leaders of armies,

²⁶ and after the sixty two weeks, the Messiah shall be cut off, though there is no crime in him; and he, with the ruler who is coming, will destroy the city and the sanctuary. They shall be destroyed with a deluge, and even to the end of the war determined on in course, with desolations.

¹¹ and the Lord will utter his voice before his army. Because the circuit of his camp is very large; because the operation of his words is irresistible; because the day of the Lord is great, extremely awful; who therefore shall be able to abide it?

²⁵ [J] I will indeed make you compensation for what hath been devoured by the grasshopper and the locust, the palmer Worm and the mildew; that great army of mine which I sent against you.

² and I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Josaphat and plead with them there for my people and my heritage, Israel, who have been scattered among the nations. They indeed divided my land among themselves

¹ Behold days of the Lord are coming, when thy spoils shall be divided in thee. ² I will indeed gather all the nations against Jerusalem for battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses rifled and the women polluted. And the half of the city shall go forth into captivity. As for the remainder of my people they shall not be utterly cut off. From this city,

⁴⁰ Now when the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to these tenants? ⁴¹ They say to him, "Wretches! he will put them to a wretched death: and his vineyard he will let to others; who will render him the fruits in their seasons."

⁴² saying, O that thou hadst known; even thou; even in this very ay of thine, the things which were for thy peace! But now they are hidden from thine eyes. ⁴³ For days will come upon thee, when thine enemies will surround thee with a rampire; and enclose thee; and shut thee up on every side; ⁴⁴ and dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and not leave one stone on another; because thou didst not know the time of this thy visitation.

²¹ Then let them who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let them who are in the midst of this [city] withdraw; and let not them who are in the regions enter it.

²⁴ They shall fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captives to all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trampled down by nations until the times of nations shall be fulfilled.

¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the nations that they may be saved; thus, filling up the measure of their sins continually: but the wrath is at last coming upon them,]

¹⁷ For the time is come when judgment is to begin at the house of God. And if it begin first with us, what must be the end of them who disregard the glad tidings of God? ¹⁸ "If the righteous scarcely escapeth, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?"

¹¹ Therefore into whatever city or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and continue there till you leave the place. ¹² And when you enter the house, salute the family. ¹³ And if the family be worthy, the peace you wish them will come upon them; but if they be not worthy, the peace you wish will rebound upon your selves.

³⁷ He who loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. And he who loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And he who doth not take up his cross and follow me, is not worthy of me.

³⁵ but they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that state, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage,

³⁶ Watch therefore, on every occasion, praying that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things which will soon come to pass; and to stand before the son of man.

⁵ there is a clear evidence of the righteous judgment of God that you are accounted worthy of the kingdom of God for which you, actually suffer;

⁴ Thou hast a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments. These shall walk with me in white robes because they are worthy.

¹⁴ Happy they who perform his commandments that they may have access to the tree of life and enter by the gates into the city:

²⁰ Wisdom uttereth her song at the gates and in the streets speaketh boldly; ²¹ and on the tops of walls she maketh proclamation; and at the gates of mighty men taketh a seat and at the gates of a city with confidence saith, ²² "While the innocent adhere to justice they shall not be put to shame: but as for fools who delight in mischief, having become wicked they hated knowledge and are become liable to censures. ²³ Behold I will pour forth to you the dictate of my spirit: and teach you this word of mine;

¹ As for thee thou art to proclaim wisdom; that understanding may attend thee. ² For she is on the lofty summits; and hath taken her stand in the middle of highways. ³ For at the gates of the mighty she hath taken a seat, and at the entrance thereof chanteth her song. ⁴ "To you, men, I call, and utter my voice to the sons of men. ⁵ Ye who are innocent learn discretion: and ye who are uninstructed give attention.

⁴ "Whosoever is simple, let him come to me." And to them who want understanding she saith, ⁵ "Come, eat of my bread and drink the wine which I have mixed for you. ⁶ Forsake folly, that you may reign forever: and seek prudence and build up understanding with knowledge."

¹ HO! ye who are thirsting, come to water! And ye who have no money, come buy and eat, without money and without price, wine and the choicest bread. ² Why are you expending money and labour for that which will not satisfy? Hearken to me and you shall eat good things; and your soul will be regaled with delicacies. ³ Incline your ears and follow in my paths; hearken to me and your soul shall live on good things; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant; the gracious promises to David which are faithful.

⁶ Seek ye the Lord; and when you find him call upon him. And when he draweth near to you; ⁷ let the wicked man forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his counsels, and turn to the Lord and he shall find mercy; for he will abundantly pardon your sins.

²¹ For the king of Babylon will halt on the old road; at the head of the two roads to consult an oracle, to divine with an arrow and inquire by graven images and inspect a liver.

¹⁵ Then he said to them, Go to all the world, and proclaim the glad tidings to all mankind. ¹⁶ He who believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he who disbelieveth shall be condemned.

⁴⁷ and that for his name reformation and remission of sins should be proclaimed to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

⁴⁷ for thus the Lord hath commanded us, "I have set thee for the light of nations, that thou mayst be for salvation to the remotest parts of the earth."

⁸ To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this favour was granted to proclaim among the nations the unsearchable riches of the Christ,

³⁸ The field is the world. The good seed are the children of the kingdom, and the darnel are the children of the evil one.

⁴⁷ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like a sweep net cast into the sea, which enclosed fishes of every kind, ⁴⁸ which, when it was full, they dragged to the shore; and then sitting down, gathered the good into vessels and threw the bad away.

¹¹ And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment, and saith to him, ¹² Companion, how camest thou hither without having on a wedding garment. And he was struck speechless.

¹ Now with respect to this, the reign of the heavens may be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. ² And five of them were prudent and five foolish.

¹⁰ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and they who were ready went in with him to the wedding, and the door was shut.

⁹ Do you not know that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the voluptuous, nor sodomites, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor such as indulge inordinate desires, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ Now such some of you were; but, you have washed yourselves; but you are hallowed, but you are acquitted by the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God.

²¹ my God humble me when I come to you again, and I cause many of those who have sinned, and have not begun a reformation, to grieve for the impurity, and fornication, and lasciviousness which they have committed.

¹⁹ They went out from us; but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.

¹⁴ Nevertheless I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit fornication. ¹⁵ In like manner thou hast them who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which I hate.

²⁰ but I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezabel, who calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. ²¹ Though I gave her time to reform from her fornication, yet she hath not reformed. ²² Behold I am about to cast her into a bed, and them who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they reform from their works; ²³ and I will slay her children with death; and all the congregations shall know, that I am the searcher of reins and hearts, and will give to every one of you according to your works.

⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art thou to take the book and to open the seals of it, because thou hast been slain and hast purchased us for God with thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation;

⁹ After this I looked and behold! a great multitude, which no one could number, of every nation and of tribes and peoples and tongues standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clad in white robes; and palm branches in their hands;

⁶ And I heard as it were a voice of a great multitude and as a sound of many waters, and as it were a peal of mighty thunder saying, Alleluia. Because the Lord God the Omnipotent reigneth,

²² Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, Bring out vestments for all the servants of Baal. And when the keeper of the wardrobe had brought them out,

¹³ All this honour is for the daughter of the king of Hesebon herself, she is surrounded with chain works of gold, and embroidery. ¹⁴ The virgins in her train shall be introduced to the king. They who are related to her shall be introduced to thee.

¹ Awake, awake, Sion! clothe thyself, Sion, with thy strength. Put on thy glory. O Jerusalem, thou holy city! No more shall the uncircumcised and the unclean pass through thee.

³ that to the mourners in Sion may be given, glory instead of ashes, oil of joy to the mourners, robes of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called generations of righteousness, a plant of the Lord for glory. ⁴ And the wastes of old times shall be rebuilded; and former desolations shall be repaired, and wasted cities renewed which had lain in ruins for ages. ⁵ And strangers shall come and feed thy flocks and6 foreigners shall be thy ploughmen and vine dressers. ⁶ But you shall be called priests of the Lord, ministers of God. You shall eat the wealth of nations and for their riches be admired. ⁷ Thus shall they again inherit the land; and everlasting joy shall be on their head. ⁸ For I am the Lord who love righteousness and hate the spoils of injustice; and I will give the righteous the fruit of their toil and make an everlasting covenant with them ⁹ and their seed shall be distinguished among the nations? and their offspring in the midst of peoples. Every one who seeth them will know them, that they are a seed whom God hath blessed. ¹⁰ And they shall rejoice in the Lord with joy.[c] Rejoice in the Lord, my soul, for he hath clothed me with the mantle of Salvation, and with an under garment of gladness, he hath crowned me as a bridegroom with a crown and adorned me as a bride, with jewels,

⁶ and became all of us as unclean, and all our righteousness was like a polluted rag; and for our iniquities we have fallen like leaves; so that the wind will sweep us away.

¹² Therefore it shall come to pass in that day, that I will search Jerusalem with a lamp, and execute vengeance on the men who are despisers; upon their stores. And as for them who say in their hearts, "The Lord will neither do good nor harm, "

³ [Now Jesus was clothed with filthy garments and stood before the angel.] ⁴ Then [the Lord] addressing them who stood before him, spoke, saying, Take away from him those filthy garments; [and to him he said, Behold I have taken away thy transgressions] and clothe ye him with a flowing robe

¹² His winnowing instrument is in his hand. He will thoroughly clean his floor, and gather his wheat for the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

³⁰ Let them both grow together till the harvest. And at the season for reaping I will say to the reapers, Gather the darnel first and bind it in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat into my barn.

³¹ So when the son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him; he will then sit on the throne of his glory. ³² And before him shall be assembled all the nations. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats.

²² even a justification, of God's appointment, by faith in Jesus Christ, for all and upon all who believe; for there is no distinction;

¹⁴ but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh to fulfil its desires.

⁵ So pass no judgment prematurely, until the Lord come, who will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and expose to view the counsels of the hearts, and then the praise for every one will be from God.

³ for having indeed that on, we shall not be found naked.

²⁷ For as many of you as have been baptized to Christ, have put on Christ,

²⁴ and to put on the new man, which in a conformity to God is created in righteousness and the holiness of truth.

¹⁰ and put on the new man, which is renewed for knowledge after the image of him who created it, ¹¹ where there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, scythian, bondman, freeman, but the all, and in all, Christ;

¹² For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and penetrateth even to the separation of animal life and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is capable of discerning the desires and thoughts of the heart. ¹³ There is indeed no creature concealed from his sight. All things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

²³ and I will slay her children with death; and all the congregations shall know, that I am the searcher of reins and hearts, and will give to every one of you according to your works.

⁴ Thou hast a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments. These shall walk with me in white robes because they are worthy. ⁵ He who overcometh shall be clothed with white raiment, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father, and before his angels.

¹⁸ I advise thee to purchase of me gold tried in the fire that thou mayst be rich, and white raiment that thou mayst be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayst see.

¹⁵ [Behold my coming is as a thief [cometh]: Happy he who watcheth and keepeth his garments that he may not walk naked and expose his shame.]

⁸ and it hath been granted her, that she should be arrayed in a cotton [robe] clean and white for this cotton is the righteous acts of the saints.

⁹ He granteth the petitioner his prayer, And hath blessed the years of the righteous; Because a man is not mighty in strength,

¹⁶ And that the feeble may have hope, and the mouth of the wicked be stopped.

⁴² Let the righteous see and rejoice, and let all iniquity stop its mouth.

²³ How canst thou say, I am not polluted, nor have I gone after Baal? View thy ways in the grave yard, and recollect what thou hast done. In the evening her voice raised the mournful cry.

²⁶ As a thief when taken, is ashamed; so shall the children of Israel be put to shame. They and their kings and their chiefs and their priests and their prophets,

²⁰ For I say to you, Unless your righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you can in no wise enter the kingdom of the heavens.

¹³ But he in reply said to one of them, Companion! I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a deniar:

⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Companion! for what purpose art thou come? Then others, advancing, laid hands on Jesus, and held him.

² and kept back a part of the price, his wife also being privy to it. And having brought a certain part he laid it at the feet of the apostles. ³ Upon which Peter said, Ananias, Why hath Satan filled thy heart that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Spirit, and keep back a part of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained, did it not remain thine? And when sold it was still at thine own disposal. Why then hast thou determined this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God. ⁵ Upon hearing these words Ananias fell down and expired. And great fear came upon all who heard these things. ⁶ Then the young men arose and having swathed him, they carried him out and buried him. ⁷ And about the space of three hours after, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. ⁸ And Peter said to her, Tell me; did you sell the land for such a price? And she said, Yes, for so much. ⁹ Thereupon Peter said to her, How is it that you have agreed to try the spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them, who have buried thy husband are at the door, and they will carry thee out. ¹⁰ At that instant she fell at his feet and expired. And the young men coming in found her dead. So they carried her out and buried her by her husband. ¹¹ And great fear came upon all the congregation, and upon all that heard these things;

²⁰ Whereupon Peter said to him, let thy money with thee be for destruction! Because thou hast thought that this free gift of God may be purchased with money, ²¹ thou hast no portion nor share in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. ²² Repent therefore of this wickedness of thine; and beseech God, if indeed this thought of thy heart can be forgiven thee. ²³ For I perceive that thou art for bitter gall and for a bond of iniquity.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God.

¹¹ knowing that such a one is wholly turned aside, and sinneth self condemned.

¹² The sinner may watch the righteous, and gnash his teeth at him;

¹⁰ the wicked shall see and be enraged. Let him gnash his teeth and pine away; the desire of the wicked shall perish.

²⁰ and commanded some strong men to bind Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago, and cast them into the furnace of fire which was heated.

¹² and the children of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

²⁹ How can anyone enter the house of the strong and plunder his goods, unless he first bind the strong one, in which case he may then plunder his house.

⁴² and cast them into the fiery furnace. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

⁵¹ and will scourge him in the severest manner and assign him his portion with the hypocrites. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

³⁰ and turn out this unprofitable servant into outer darkness; weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

²⁸ Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there, when you shall see Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves cast out.

¹⁸ Verily, verily I say to thee, When thou wast young, thou didst gird thyself and walk where thou wouldst; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another will gird thee and carry thee whither thou wouldst not.

⁵⁴ At hearing this they were cut to the heart and gnashed their teeth at him.

¹¹ who coming to us and taking Paul's girdle, bound his own hands and feet and said, Thus saith the holy spirit, So will the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man, whose girdle this is, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

⁹ These shall suffer punishment, an everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty,

⁴ For if God spared not angels who sinned, but confining them in Tartarus, chains of darkness, delivered them up to be kept for judgment

¹⁷ They are wells without water; clouds impelled by a whirlwind, for whom is reserved in the bowels of the earth the gloom of everlasting darkness.

⁶ and the angels who did not keep their own government, but left their proper abode, he hath reserved in perpetual bonds, under darkness, for the judgment of the great day.

¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom is reserved the gloom of everlasting darkness.

²⁷ And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing which defileth or maketh an abomination or [uttereth] a lie; none but they who are enrolled in the Lamb's book of life.

¹³ Enter in at the strait gate. Because the gate is wide and the way broad which leadeth to destruction, therefore many there are who go in through it: ¹⁴ because the gate is strait and the way narrow, which leadeth to life, therefore there are few who find it.

¹⁶ So the last shall be first, and the first last. For there are many called, but few chosen.

²² Indeed if those days were not shortened, no flesh could escape. But for the sake of the chosen, those days will be shortened.

²³ and one said to him, Master, are there few who are saved? He said to them; ²⁴ Strive with all your might to enter in through the narrow gate; for many, I assure you, will seek to enter, who will not be able.

¹⁰ Therefore, brethren, use the more diligence to make your call and election sure; for if you practise these you will never fall;

¹⁴ These will make war against the lamb, and the lamb will overcome them; for he is Lord of lords and King of kings; and they who are with him are called and chosen and faithful.

² The kings of the earth combined; and the chiefs assembled together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, [saying]

⁶ And if one came to see me, his heart spoke vainly. He collected iniquity for himself; he went abroad and spoke for that purpose.

⁵ All the day long they spurned my words: all their thoughts were against me for mischief. ⁶ Some are to dwell near and hide themselves: some are to watch my footsteps. ⁷ As I have suffered this for my life, thou wilt on no account save them. In thine indignation thou wilt cast down peoples.

⁶ They had prepared snares for my feet; and had caused my soul to bow down. They dug a pit before me: but into it they themselves have fallen.

³ For behold they have hunted my life: the mighty are set against me: though there is no transgression; no sin, Lord, in me.

²¹ and who by reasoning cause men to err. But as for all them who reprove in the gates they will indeed lay a stumbling block, because of their having turned aside the righteous one for the unrighteous,

¹⁸ Upon this they said, "Come let us settle on account with Jeremias. Because law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a word from the prophet, Come and that we may smite him with the tongue, let us hear all his words."

¹⁰ Because I heard the whisper of many collected from all around saying, "Join in conspiracy and let us all conspire against him; ye men who are his friends watch his thoughts; if he can be deceived, we shall then prevail over him and take our revenge on him."

¹³ and send to him some of the Pharisees, and the Herodians, to entrap him with a speech. ¹⁴ And when they came, they say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man. For thou respectest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God with truth. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar? Or is it not? ¹⁵ Should we give? Or should we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, Why do ye try me? Bring me a deniar, that I may see it. ¹⁶ So they brought him one. Then he saith to them, Whose image and inscription is this? And they said, Caesar"s. ¹⁷ Then Jesus, answering, said to them, Render to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. And they expressed admiration at him.

⁵³ Now while he was saying these things to them, the Scribes and the Pharisees took occasion to urge him vehemently, and provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying snares for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him;

²⁰ Therefore, having watched him diligently, they sent to him spies who should feign themselves to be righteous men, that they might lay hold of some word of his, in order to deliver him up to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor. ²¹ So they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou speakest and teachest uprightly, and that thou art not a respecter of persons, but teachest the way of God with truth. ²² Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar, or is it not? ²³ But he, knowing their craftiness, said to them, Why are you trying me? ²⁴ Shew me a deniar. Whose image and inscription hath it? When they in reply, said, Caesar's; ²⁵ then he said to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. ²⁶ So they were not able to take advantage of his decision before the people. Therefore, having expressed admiration at his answer, they held their peace.

³ Consider him who bore such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you may not grow weary, nor faint in your minds.

⁹ With regard to him who saith to his father and to his mother I have not beheld thee, And hath not acknowledged his brethren, And hath renounced his own children, He it is who hath observed thine Oracles And diligently kept thy covenant.

¹⁴ To which Michaias replied, As the Lord liveth, whatever the Lord shall say to me, that will I speak.

²¹ For I should not be awed by man: nor put to the blush because of a mortal. ²² For I am not apt to admire persons. Will not Worms devour them as well as me.

⁹ Their heart is false; their throat, an open sepulchre: with their tongue they practised deceit.

² They spoke vanities one to another: their lips are deceitful, they spoke with a double heart:

²¹ they were scattered by the indignation of his countenance. When his heart was near, his words were smoother than oil. Now they are daggers.

⁵ He who shall provide a net to catch his friend; spreadeth it for his own feet.

¹³ We have sinned: we have lied, and turned back from following our God; we have spoken things unjust, and have been disobedient; we have conceived and meditated from our heart lying words, ¹⁴ we have indeed turned judgment backward, therefore saving mercy standeth aloof." [p] Because truth was destroyed in their ways and; they could not walk in straight paths; ¹⁵ and truth was removed and they substituted opinion in place of knowledge, therefore the Lord took a view, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

³ and have bent their tongue like a bow; lying and infidelity prevailed in the land; because they have proceeded from evils to evils, and have not known me, saith the Lord; ⁴ be upon your guard every man against his neighbour, and in your own brothers place no confidence; for every brother will supplant, and every friend walk deceitfully; ⁵ every one will treat his friend with contempt. They cannot speak truth; their tongue hath learned to speak lies. They have done injustice, and have not stopped to rectify it.

³⁰ Now son of man, with regard to these children of thy people who speak of thee by the walls and in the porches of their houses, they indeed speak to one another, saying, "Let us assemble and hear what come from the Lord." ³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;

⁹ [p] Hear these things I beseech you, ye leaders of the house of Jacob, and ye remnant of the house of Israel, who abhor judgment and pervert all equity, ¹⁰ who are building up Sion with blood and Jerusalem with injustice. ¹¹ [J] Her rulers have judged for rewards; and her priests have given answers for hire; and her prophets have prophesied for silver, without waiting for the Lord, saying, "Is not the Lord among us? No evils shall come upon us:" ¹² therefore because of you, Sion shall be ploughed like a field; and Jerusalem shall be like a temporary building for summer fruits; and the mountain of the house shall be for a grove of a forest.

⁶ The law of truth was in his mouth: and iniquity should not have been found in his lips. Walking uprightly with me in peace, he indeed turned many from iniquity.

⁹ therefore I have made you contemptible and outcasts among all the nations, because you did not keep my ways, but in law have had respect to persons.

¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you of bread, when I cautioned you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood that he did not caution them against the leaven of the bread, but against the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

²⁴ saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother.

²⁶ In like manner also the second and the third, even to the seventh.

¹⁸ And he said, Go to the city, to such a person, and say to him, The teacher saith, My time is near. At thy house I am about to celebrate the passover with my disciples.

⁴⁹ So coming directly up to Jesus, he said, Hail, Rabbi! and kissed him.

⁶ Upon this the Pharisees went out, and immediately held a consultation with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

¹⁵ And he gave them a charge, saying, Take heed; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.

¹⁷ And as he was setting out on his journey, one came running, and kneeling down before him, asked him, Good teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit an everlasting life?

¹⁴ And when they came, they say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man. For thou respectest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God with truth. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar? Or is it not?

⁴⁰ Thereupon Jesus addressing him, said; Simon, I have something to say to thee. And he saith, Teacher, say it.

²¹ So they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou speakest and teachest uprightly, and that thou art not a respecter of persons, but teachest the way of God with truth.

¹⁸ He who speaketh from himself, seeketh his own glory; but he who seeketh the glory of him who sent him, is true, and in him there is no falsehood.

⁶ Jesus saith to him, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one cometh to the father but by me.

³⁷ Thereupon Pilate said to him, Thou art a king then? Jesus answered, It is as thou sayest, I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to bear testimony for the truth. Every one who is of the truth hearkeneth to my voice.

¹⁷ For we do not like the many, adulterate the word of God, but as men of sincerity, but as men of God, in the presence of God in Christ we speak.

² but have renounced the secrets of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor dealing deceitfully with the word of God, but by the clear manifestation of the truth recommending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

¹⁶ So that henceforth we know no one after the flesh. Nay though we indeed knew Christ after the flesh, yet we now know him so no more.

¹⁰ For do I now conciliate the favour of men rather than of God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

⁶ And with regard to those in high repute [what they were formerly doth not concern me: God accepteth not man's person; for these men of repute added nothing to me;

⁴ but as we had been approved by God to be entrusted with the glad tidings, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who trieth our hearts.

¹⁷ Now the wisdom which cometh from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

²⁰ and we know that the son of God is come, and hath given us understanding that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, and in his son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and the life eternal.

¹⁴ And when thou art come to the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and hast taken possession of it, and dwelt therein, if thou shouldst say, I will set a chief over me, as the other nations around me do; ¹⁵ thou shalt surely set, as chief over thee, him whom the Lord thy God shall chuse. Thou shalt appoint one of thy brethren chief over thee. Thou shalt not be at liberty to set a stranger over thee, because he is not thy brother.

¹³ Now therefore be it known to the king, that if this city be rebuilt, and the walls therefore completed, no tribute will be paid to thee, nor will they do homage. Now as this is injurious to kings,

²⁴ Moreover, in respect to all the priests and the Levites, the musicians, the keepers of the gates, the Nathimins, and those employed in the service of the house of God, this hath been notified to you, Take no toll of them. Thou shalt have no authority to exercise dominion over them.

⁴ There were others who said, We have borrowed money to pay the king's tribute, and pledged our fields and our vineyards and our houses,

³⁷ and its abundant fruits belong to those kings whom for our sins thou hast set over us, and who have dominion over our bodies, and who can do with our cattle what they please, so that we are in great affliction.

² came to Jeremias the prophet and said to him, Have compassion on us, we beseech thee and pray to the Lord thy God for this remnant; for we are left only few of many as thine eyes see. ³ Now let the Lord thy God point out to us the way which we should go and what we are to do.

²⁰ For now you must be sensible that you did evil in your hearts when you sent me saying, Pray for us to the Lord, and we will act conformably to all that the Lord shall say to thee.

²⁵ He saith, Yes. And when he came into the house, before he spake, Jesus said to him, What thinkest thou Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth receive assessments? Of their own sons or of others?

¹ Now it happened in those days, that an edict came forth from Caesar Augustus, that this whole inhabited land should be enrolled.

¹ Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea; and Herod, tetrarch of Galilee; and his brother Philip, tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis; and Lysanias, being tetrarch of Abilene

¹² From this [time] Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend. Whoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. ¹³ When Pilate therefore heard this speech, he brought out Jesus and sat down on the tribunal in a place called the pavement [in Hebrew Gabbatha.] ¹⁴ [It was now the paschal preparation day, and the sixth hour was drawing on,] and he saith to the Jews, Behold your king! ¹⁵ Whereupon they cried out, Away, away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

³⁷ After him started up Judas, the Galilean, in the days of the enrolment, and drew a great many people after him. He also perished, and all that put confidence in him were dispersed.

⁷ and Jason hath harboured them, though they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying, There is another king, one Jesus.

⁸ To which when Paul replied, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I committed any offence,

²² But we should be glad to hear what thou thinkest; for with respect to this sect we know that it is every where spoken against.

⁶ Indeed on this account you pay taxes, because there are ministers of God continually employed for this very purpose. ⁷ Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute; custom to whom custom; reverence to whom reverence; honour to whom honour is due.

¹ And the Pharisees and the Sadducees having come thither with a view to try him, desired that he would show them a sign from heaven. ² Whereupon he in reply said to them, When it is evening you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red: ³ and in the morning, there will be a storm today, for the sky is red and lowering. Hypocrites! you know how to distinguish the appearance of the sky, and can you not discern the signs of the times? ⁴ An evil and adulterous generation demand a sign, but no sign shall be given them, save that of the prophet Jonas. So leaving them he departed.

³ And the Pharisees came to him, and trying him said, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every fault?

⁸ Thereupon Jesus, perceiving immediately by his spirit that they are thus reasoning in themselves, said to them, Why do ye reason thus in your hearts?

⁵ Again he sent another, whom they killed; and many others, some of whom they beat, and some they killed.

²² Thereupon Jesus, knowing their surmises, addressed them, saying, Why reason ye in your hearts?

⁴⁷ And as Jesus perceived the ill grounded reasoning of their heart, he took a child, and placed it by him,

²⁵ Then a certain teacher of the law stood up, and with a view to try him, said, Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life?

²³ But he, knowing their craftiness, said to them, Why are you trying me?

²⁵ And because he had no need that any one should testify of man, for he himself knew what was in man;

⁶ This they said to try him, that they might have matter for accusing him. Thereupon Jesus stooped down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

⁹ Thereupon Peter said to her, How is it that you have agreed to try the spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them, who have buried thy husband are at the door, and they will carry thee out.

²⁸ And as that servant was going out, he met one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred deniars and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay me what thou owest.

² And having agreed with some labourers for a deniar a day, he sent them to his vineyard.

⁶ And I heard a voice in the midst of the four animate beings, saying, A choenix of wheat for a deniar and three choenices of barley for a deniar, but hurt not the oil and the wine."

²⁴ Shew me a deniar. Whose image and inscription hath it? When they in reply, said, Caesar's;

²¹ My son, fear God and the king and be not disobedient to either of them.

¹⁶ In reply to this, Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago said to the king Nabuchodonosar, We are at no loss to answer thee in respect to this matter. ¹⁷ For our God in heaven, whom we worship, is able to deliver us out of the furnace of fire which is heated, and he will deliver us, king, out of thy hands. ¹⁸ But even though he do not, be it known to thee, king, that we cannot serve thy gods, nor will we worship the image which thou hast set up.

¹⁰ Now when Daniel knew that the decree was passed, he went home and the windows in his upper chamber towards Jerusalem were opened for him, and three times a day, kneeling down on his knees, he prayed and gave thanks before his God as he had done heretofore. ¹¹ Now those men watched and having found Daniel praising and supplicating his God,

²⁰ And when he approached the den, he cried with a loud voice, Daniel, the servant of the living God, hath thy God, whom thou servest continually, been able to deliver thee from the mouths of the lions? ²¹ Thereupon Daniel said to the king, king live forever! ²² My God sent his angel and shut the mouths of the lions and they have not hurt me. For before him rectitude was found in me; and even in thy sight, king, I have committed no offence. ²³ At this the king was exceedingly rejoiced and gave order to take Daniel up out of the den. So he was taken up out of the den and there was no manner of hurt found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

⁶ A son honoureth a father; and a servant, his master. Now if I be a father, where is my honour? And if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord Almighty. As for you priests, you are they who bring dishonour on my name. Do you say, By what have we brought dishonour on thy name? ⁷ By offering on mine altar polluted loaves. And do you say, How have we polluted them? When you said, The table of the Lord is polluted, you then caused no regard to be paid to that which was to be laid thereon. ⁸ Since, if you offer the blind for sacrifices, it is not evil; and if you offer the lame or sickly, it is not evil. Offer such now to thy governor, will he admit thee? Will he accept thy person? saith the Lord Almighty.

⁸ Will a man supplant God? For you supplant me: and will you say, "wherein have we supplanted thee?" Because the tythes and the first fruits are with you, ⁹ and you view them again and again and supplant me. The year is ended and you have carried the products into [a] The objection, [b] The answer. your stores. ¹⁰ Now let that which hath been plundered from him be in his house. Turn now in this respect, saith the Lord Almighty: [see] if I will not open for you the flood gates of heaven and pour my blessing upon you, until there is enough;

¹⁰ Whereupon Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan: for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and serve him alone.

²⁵ He saith, Yes. And when he came into the house, before he spake, Jesus said to him, What thinkest thou Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth receive assessments? Of their own sons or of others? ²⁶ Peter saith to him, Of others. Jesus saith to him, The sons then surely are free. ²⁷ However, that we may not offend them, go to the sea, and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that cometh up; and having opened its mouth thou wilt find a stater: take that and give it to them for me and thee.

³⁷ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

² and began to accuse him, saying, We found this man perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king.

¹⁹ But Peter and John in reply to them, said, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye.

²⁹ In reply to which Peter and the apostles said, We must obey God rather than men.

⁷ Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute; custom to whom custom; reverence to whom reverence; honour to whom honour is due.

¹³ Be subject therefore to every human establishment for the Lord's sake, whether to a king as supreme, ¹⁴ or to governor as persons sent by him for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them who do well. ¹⁵ For it is the will of God that you should by such good behaviour curb the ignorance of foolish men. ¹⁶ As freemen, but not like those who use their freedom as a cover for wickedness, but as servants of God ¹⁷ honour all men, love the brotherhood; fear God; honour the king.

⁴ Answer not a fool conformably to his folly; let thou become like him. ⁵ But answer a fool according to his folly; that he may not think himself wise.

¹⁶ Behold I send you forth like sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as the serpents and harmless as the doves.

³³ When the people heard this they were astonished at his manner of teaching.

⁴⁶ And none could answer him a word. Nor did any one presume from that day forward to ask him any more questions.

¹² Upon this they sought to lay hold of him, but were afraid of the people. For they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. So they left him and went away,

¹⁵ For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to contradict or withstand.

¹⁰ but not being able to withstand the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke,

⁶ Let your conversation be always with courteousness, seasoned with salt, with a knowledge how you ought to answer every one.

⁷ And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them," Brood of vipers! who hath prompted you to flee from the impending wrath.

⁶ And Jesus said to them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

¹⁸ Then came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no revival of the dead. And they asked him, saying, ¹⁹ Teacher, Moses hath written for us, that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife without leaving children, his brother should take his wife and raise up a seed for his brother. ²⁰ Now there were seven brothers, and the first took a wife, and died without leaving issue. ²¹ Then the second took her, and died, and he left no issue. And the same was the case with the third. ²² Indeed the seven married her, but left no issue. Last of all, the woman also died. ²³ At the revival of the dead, therefore, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? for she hath been wife to the seven. ²⁴ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Are you not led into error because of your not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God? ²⁵ For when the dead rise again, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels in heaven. ²⁶ Now with respect to the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spake in the bush to him, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. ²⁷ He is not the God of the dead; but the God of the living. You are therefore led much astray.

²⁷ Then some of the Sadducees, who deny a future state, came and asked him, ²⁸ saying, Teacher, Moses hath written for us, If a man's brother, having a wife, die; when he dieth childless, his brother must take his wife and raise up a seed for his brother, ²⁹ Now there were seven brothers. And the first, having taken a wife, died childless. ³⁰ Then the second took the wife, and he died childless: ³¹ then the third took her, and so all the seven, and died without issue. ³² And last of all the woman also died. ³³ In the future state, therefore, whose wife of them is she, as she hath been married to all the seven? ³⁴ In reply to this, Jesus said to them, The children of this world marry and are given in marriage; ³⁵ but they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that state, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage, ³⁶ For they can die no more. For angel-like they are indeed children of God, being children of the resurrection. ³⁷ Now that the dead are raised up, even Moses hath plainly shewn; as at the bush he stileth the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. ³⁸ For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For to him they are all alive. ³⁹ Upon this, some of the scribes addressing him, said, Teacher, thou hast spoken well. ⁴⁰ And after that they did not presume to ask him another question.

¹ Now while they were speaking to the people; the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees,

¹⁷ the chief priest rising up, and all his party; the sect of the Sadducees, they were filled with zeal,

⁶ Paul then perceiving that the one part were Sadducees; and the other Pharisees, cried aloud in the Sanhedrim, Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of a Pharisee. For a hope even of a resurrection of the dead I am now to be judged. ⁷ And on his saying this there arose a dissention between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided. ⁸ For the Sadducees say, There is no resurrection nor any angel nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge both.

¹² Now, if Christ be proclaimed, that he hath been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? ¹³ If there is indeed no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not raised. ¹⁴ And if Christ hath not been raised, our proclamation is vain, and your belief is also vain.

¹⁸ who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and subvert the belief of some.

⁸ Whereupon Judas said to Aunan, Go in unto thy brother's wife and be a husband to her and raise up a seed for thy brother.

¹¹ Then Judas said to Thamar his daughter in law, Continue a widow in thy father's house till my son Selom grow up. For he said, Peradventure he also may die as his brothers did. So Thamar went and dwelt at her father's house.

⁵ When brothers dwell together, and one of them die, and hath no issue, the wife of him who died shall not marry a man abroad, who is not near of kin. The brother of her husband shall go in unto her, and take her to wife, and cohabit with her; ⁶ and the child which she shall bear shall go by the name of him who died, so that his name shall not be blotted out from among Israel. ⁷ And if any man decline to take his brother's wife, the woman shall go to the gate, to the senate, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up his brother's name in Israel. My husband's brother hath refused. ⁸ Thereupon the senate of his city shall send for him, and say to him, Thou must stand up, and say, I will not take her. ⁹ Upon which his brother's wife shall come, in the presence of the senate, and loose one shoe from his foot, and spit before his face, and addressing him, say, So shall be done to the man who will not build up his brother's house in Israel. ¹⁰ And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him who had his shoe loosed.

¹¹ But Noemin said, Return, I pray you, my daughters! for why should you go with me? Have I yet any more sons in my womb to be husbands for you?

²¹ Not every one who saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he who doeth the will of my father who is in heaven.

¹⁶ So they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, We know that thou art true and teachest the way of God truly, and carest for no one. For thou respectest not the persons of men.

³⁶ Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

¹⁹ Teacher, Moses hath written for us, that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife without leaving children, his brother should take his wife and raise up a seed for his brother.

⁴⁶ Now why do you call me, master, master, when ye do not what I command?

¹⁴ Can any thing be impossible with God? About this time twelve month I will return to thee, and Sarah shall have a son.

²⁵ For I know that he is eternal, ²⁶ who is about to dissolve me on earth, to raise again this skin of mine which draweth up these things. ²⁷ For from the Lord those things have been done to me, of which I alone am conscious; which mine eyes have seen, and no other; and which have all been done to me in my bosom.

⁹ therefore my heart was gladdened; and my tongue exulted with joy: moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope; ¹⁰ that thou wilt not leave my soul in the mansion of the dead nor suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. ¹¹ Thou hast made known to me the ways of life: thou with thy presence wilt fill me with joy. At thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.

¹⁵ But as for me, let me appear righteous before thee; let me be satisfied with a display of thy glory.

¹⁴ They are pent up like sheep in the mansion of the dead: death shall feed them and the early watches will rule over them: and that help of theirs from their glory, shall in the mansion of the dead become obsolete. ¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of that mansion when it receiveth me.

²⁵ For what is there in heaven for me; or what on earth have I desired, besides thee? ²⁶ Hath my heart and my flesh failed? God is the strength of my heart; God is my portion forever.

⁸ Mighty death had swallowed up; but the Lord God hath again wiped every tear from every face; and removed from the whole earth the reproach of this people. For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken.

¹⁹ [p] The dead shall be raised up again, even they in the tombs shall be raised up: and they in this land shall be filled with joy: for the dew from thee is healing for them; but the land of the ungodly shall fall.

¹ You see how a righteous one was destroyed, and no one layeth it to heart. And righteous men are taken away, and no one observeth, that on account of iniquity the righteous one was taken away. ² His sepulture shall be in peace. He is taken from among you.

¹⁷ self-existent Lord, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and by thy high and exalted arm. From thee nothing can be hid.

² And many of them who sleep in mounds of earth shall be raised up, some for everlasting life and some for disgrace and everlasting shame. ³ And they who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and some of the many righteous like the stars for the ages and longer.

¹⁴ [J] Him I will deliver from the power of the grave, and from death I will redeem them. [p] death, where is thy punishment? Where thy sting, grave? Is comfort hid from mine eyes?

³⁷ For with God nothing is impossible.

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, This is what I told you while I was yet with you, That all the things written concerning me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, must needs be accomplished. ⁴⁵ Then he opened their minds that they might understand the scriptures,

⁹ For they did not yet know the scripture, that he was to rise from the dead.

⁸ It is deemed among you somewhat incredible that God raiseth the dead;

⁴ For whatever was written heretofore, was written for our instruction, that we by patience and the consolation of the scripture may have hope.

²¹ who will transform the body of this our humble state, that it may be made conformable to his glorious body, according to the energy of his power to subject all to himself.

²⁰ Bless the Lord, all ye his angels; ye mighty powers, who execute his word, on hearing the voice of his commands.

⁷ Thus saith the Lord Almighty, If thou wilt walk in my ways, and keep my statutes, thou shalt judge my house. And if thou wilt carefully watch my court I will give thee men conversant with these attendants.

⁴³ Then shall the righteous shine like the sun in the kingdom of their father. Whoever hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁰ Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you, Their angels in heaven do continually behold the face of my father who is in heaven.

³⁸ For as in those days, before the deluge, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, till Noe entered the ark;

²⁴ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Are you not led into error because of your not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God? ²⁵ For when the dead rise again, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels in heaven.

²⁷ They ate; they drank; they married, and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all.

³⁴ In reply to this, Jesus said to them, The children of this world marry and are given in marriage; ³⁵ but they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that state, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage, ³⁶ For they can die no more. For angel-like they are indeed children of God, being children of the resurrection.

²⁸ Wonder not at this; for a time is coming when all that are in the graves shall hearken to his voice, ²⁹ and come forth; they who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and they who have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation.

²⁹ and say this, brethren, that the time with regard to what remaineth, is shortened, so that they who have wives should be as if they had them not; ³⁰ and they who weep, as if they wept not; and they who rejoice, as if they rejoiced not; and they who buy, as not possessing; and they ³¹ who use this world, as not using it immoderately. For the scenery of this world is shifting;

¹ Behold what a love the Father hath shewn us, that we should be called children of God: on this account the world doth not know us, because it did not know him. ² Beloved, we are now children of God. Though it hath not yet been manifested what we shall be, yet we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him: that we shall see him as he is.

⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art thou to take the book and to open the seals of it, because thou hast been slain and hast purchased us for God with thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation; ¹⁰ and hast made us kings and priests for our God, and we shall reign on the earth." ¹¹ And I looked and heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the animate beings and the elders and the number of them was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing."

¹⁰ Whereupon I fell down at his feet to worship him. And he saith to me, See thou do not. I am the fellow servant of thee and of thy brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the spirit of this prophecy is the testimony of Jesus.

¹³ Go then and learn what this meaneth, "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice;" for I did not come to call righteous men, but sinners to reformation.

³ Whereupon he said to them, Have you not read, what David did when he was hungry, and they who were with him?

⁷ And if you had known the meaning of this,. "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice," you would not have condemned the innocent.

¹⁶ and said to him, Hearest thou what these say? Jesus saith to them, Yes. Have you never read, "From the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise."

⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes."

⁶ Then he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. Whereupon Moses turned away his face; for he was afraid to look forward in the presence of God.

¹⁵ Again God said to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, The Lord, the God of our fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob hath sent me to you. This is my everlasting name and memorial to all generations. ¹⁶ Go therefore and assemble the Senate of the children of Israel and say to them, The Lord, the God of our fathers hath appeared to me, even the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob saying, With watchfulness I have observed you and all that hath befallen you in Egypt.

³⁷ Now that the dead are raised up, even Moses hath plainly shewn; as at the bush he stileth the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. ³⁸ For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For to him they are all alive.

³² "I am the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob." Upon which Moses trembled and durst not view it.

¹⁶ but now they desire a better; that is a heavenly country; therefore God is not ashamed of them; to be invoked as their God: for he prepared a city for them.

²⁸ When Jesus finished this discourse, the crouds were astonished at his manner of teaching; ²⁹ for in teaching them he was like one having authority, and not like the scribes.

²² Upon hearing this they were struck with surprise, and left him and went away.

² and on the sabbath day he began to teach in the synagogue. And many who heard were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man these things? And, What wisdom is this which is given him, that such miracles are done by his hands?

¹⁷ Then Jesus, answering, said to them, Render to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. And they expressed admiration at him.

⁴⁷ And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding, and his answers;

²² And all bore testimony in his favour, and expressed admiration at the graceful words which proceeded from his mouth, and said, Is not this the son of Joseph?

⁴⁶ The officers replied, Never did a man speak like this man.

⁵ The nations saw and were affrighted; the ends of the earth drew near and came together. ⁶ Every one is determining to help his neighbour and his brother, and one will say, ⁷ The carpenter had strength, so had the smith who beateth with a hammer and plateth it. Sometimes indeed one will say, "It is a beautiful composition?" These things they made strong with nails; they will fix them up that they may not be moved:

¹⁴ Thereupon the Pharisees went out and conspired against him that they might destroy him.

³ They who were foolish took their lamps, but did not take oil with them. ⁴ But the prudent took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ And while the bridegroom tarried they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

²⁸ Then one of the Scribes who had heard them disputing, and knew that he had answered them properly, coming up, asked him, Which is the chief commandment of all? ²⁹ Whereupon Jesus answered, This is the chief of all the commandments: "Hear, O Israel, The Lord is our God: ³⁰ the Lord is one: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength." This is the first commandment. ³¹ And the second, resembling it, is this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". There is no other commandment greater than these.

⁴⁷ Whereupon the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled the Sanhedrim, and said, What are we doing? Because this man doth many miracles, ⁴⁸ if we let him go on thus, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both this place and this nation of ours. ⁴⁹ And one of them, namely, Caiaphas, being chief priest that year, said to them, Are you totally ignorant, ⁵⁰ and do you not consider that it is better for us that one man die for the people than that the whole nation should perish.

²⁴ And while the priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests, upon hearing these words, were doubting how this could be, ²⁵ there came one who told them, saying, Behold! the men whom you put in prison, are standing in the temple and teaching the people. ²⁶ Then the captain went with the under officers and brought them, but without violence; for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. ²⁷ And when they had brought them, and set them before the Sanhedrim, the chief priest asked them, ²⁸ saying, Did we not strictly charge you not to teach for this name"? Yet behold you have filled Jerusalem with this doctrine of yours and wish to bring that man's blood upon us.

²³ And during that time there was a considerable disturbance about this way. ²⁴ For one Demetrius, a silversmith, a maker of silver shrines of Diana, kept in employ a great number of artists; ²⁵ and having assembled these and the workmen of like occupation, he said, "Men, you know that on this manufacture dependeth our maintenance. ²⁶ And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul by his persuasion hath perverted a vast multitude, saying that they which are made with hands, are not gods. ²⁷ So that not only this occupation of ours is in danger of being brought into disrepute; but the temple also of the great goddess Diana, of .being set at naught; and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth." ²⁸ Upon hearing this and being full of rage they shouted, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

²⁸ crying out, Men of Israel help; This is the man who is continually teaching all men every where against the people and the law and this very place; and moreover he hath brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place. ²⁹ [For they had before seen Trophimus, the Ephesian, in the city with him, and imagined that Paul had brought him into the temple.] ³⁰ Upon this the whole city was moved, and there was a concourse of the people; and laying hold on Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the gates were shut.

¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me?

² And the Pharisees came, and with a view to try him, asked him, is it lawful for a man to put away his wife.

³⁰ but the Pharisees and the teachers of the law made null, with regard to themselves, the counsel of God, by not submitting to be baptized by him;

²⁵ Then a certain teacher of the law stood up, and with a view to try him, said, Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life? ²⁶ Whereupon Jesus said to him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? ²⁷ And he in reply, said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, even with thy whole mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. ²⁸ Upon this Jesus said to him, Thou hast answered right. Do this and thou shall live. ²⁹ But he, wishing to justify himself, said, And who is my neighbour? ³⁰ In answer to which Jesus said, A certain man from Jerusalem was going down to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who having stripped him, and wounded him, went off, leaving him half dead. ³¹ And accidentally a certain priest went down that way, who saw him and passed on over against him. ³² And in like manner, a Levite coming to the place, when he came and saw him, passed him by. ³³ But a certain Samaritan, who was on a journey, came where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion ³⁴ and went up to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring thereon oil and wine. Then having set him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn, and took care of him. ³⁵ And the next morning, when he was departing, he took out two deniars, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Take care of this man: and whatever thou expendest more, I will pay thee when I return. ³⁶ Now, which of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour to him who fell among the robbers? ³⁷ The expounder of the law said, He who did him the act of kindness. Thereupon Jesus said to him, Go thou, and do in like manner.

⁴⁵ Upon this, one of the teachers of the law, interposing, saith to him, Teacher, by speaking thus dost thou reproach us also? ⁴⁶ Thereupon he said, Alas for you also, ye teachers of the law, because you load men with heavy burdens hard to be borne, and will not yourselves touch these burdens with one of your fingers.

⁵² Alas for you, teachers of the law! because you have taken away the key of knowledge. You entered not in yourselves; and them who were entering you hindered.

³ thereupon Jesus, addressing the teachers of the law, and the Pharisees, said, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

¹³ Forward on their journey Zenas the lawyer, and Apollos, with all diligence, so that nothing may be wanting to them.

¹² I will prescribe for him a multitude. Though his rites were devised for other purposes, the altars were objects of love.

¹⁹ Therefore whosoever shall weaken the force of one of the commandments, were it even the least, and teach men accordingly, he shall be the least esteemed in the reign of the heavens; but whoever shall practise and teach them, he shall be highly esteemed in the reign of the heavens. ²⁰ For I say to you, Unless your righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you can in no wise enter the kingdom of the heavens.

⁶ must not honour either his father or his mother." Thus you have annulled the commandment of God from a regard to your doctrines.

²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel.

²⁸ Then one of the Scribes who had heard them disputing, and knew that he had answered them properly, coming up, asked him, Which is the chief commandment of all? ²⁹ Whereupon Jesus answered, This is the chief of all the commandments: "Hear, O Israel, The Lord is our God: ³⁰ the Lord is one: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength." This is the first commandment. ³¹ And the second, resembling it, is this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". There is no other commandment greater than these. ³² Upon this the Scribe said to him, right! Teacher! thou hast said truly that there is one God; and there is no other besides him: ³³ and to love him with the whole heart, and with the whole understanding, and with the whole soul, and with the whole strength; and to love one's neighbour as himself, is more than all the burnt offerings and the sacrifices.

⁴² But alas for you, Pharisees! because you pay tithe of mint, and rue, and of all kinds of pulse, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have practised, without, however, neglecting the other.

⁵ And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole understanding, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole might.

¹² Now therefore, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, and to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul;

⁶ And the Lord will purify thy heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, that thou mayst live.

²⁷ And he in reply, said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, even with thy whole mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

⁷ Because the bent of the flesh is enmity to God, [for it is not in subjection to the law of God, nor indeed can be,]

¹⁶ This is the covenant which I will make with Them "After these days, saith the Lord, having adapted my laws to their understandings, I will write them on their minds, ¹⁷ and their sins and iniquities I will remember no more."

² by this we know that we love the children of God. While we love God, we keep his commandments; ³ for this is the love of God that we keep his commandments. Now his commandments are not grievous, ⁴ because whatever is born of God overcometh the world, and the victory which overcometh the world is our faith. ⁵ Who is he that overcometh the world, but he who believeth that Jesus is the son of God?

¹⁸ but let not thy hand take vengeance. Thou shalt not bear a grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. I am the Lord; ¹⁹ Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

³¹ And the second, resembling it, is this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". There is no other commandment greater than these.

⁹ for this: Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shall not murder; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness; Thou shall not covet; and whatever other commandment there be, is summed up in this commandment, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ¹⁰ This love worketh no evil to one's neighbour: This love therefore is the fulfilling of the law.

² Let every one of us please his neighbour as far as is good for edification.

¹⁴ For the whole law is summed up in this one precept, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

¹⁰ As we therefore have an opportunity let us do good to all, but more especially to them who are of the household of faith.

⁸ If you fulfil a law which, according to the scripture, is indeed a royal one, namely, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," you do well:

¹² Whatsoever therefore you would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them, for this is the law and the prophets.

¹⁷ Because the law was given by Moses grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God. ²⁰ Because no flesh can be justified before him by works of law; for by law there is a knowledge of sin, ²¹ now therefore, independency of law, there is made manifest a justification of God's appointment, attested by the law and the prophets

⁹ for this: Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shall not murder; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness; Thou shall not covet; and whatever other commandment there be, is summed up in this commandment, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

⁵ Now the end of that charge is love, from a pure heart, and good conscience, and an unfeigned belief;

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and every one who loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. ⁸ He who doth not love hath not known God, for God is love. ⁹ By this the love of God was manifested among us, because God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we may live by him. ¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins. ¹¹ Beloved, if God so loved us; we surely ought to love one another.

¹⁹ As for us we love him because he first loved us. ²⁰ If anyone saith, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For how can he who doth not love his brother whom he hath seen, love God, whom he hath not seen? ²¹ Besides, we have this commandment from him, That he who loveth God, love his brother also:

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and consulted how they might ensnare him by a discourse.

³⁴ Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they flocked about him for the same purpose.

³⁵ Then Jesus, in the course of his teaching in the temple, said, How do the Scribes say, That the Christ is the son of David? ³⁶ For David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool." ³⁷ If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son? As the great multitude heard him with pleasure,

⁴¹ Then he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is the son of David, ⁴² when David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand ⁴³ until I make thine enemies thy footstool, ⁴⁴ David therefore calleth him Lord, how then is he his son?

¹³ Thereupon he said, "Hear now, house of David, Is it a small matter for you to contend with men? How is it then that you contend with the Lord? ¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and he shall be called Emmanuel.

⁶ because for us a child is born, and to us a son is given, whose government is on his own shoulder; and his name is called, "The Messenger of Great Counsel." For I will bring peace on the rulers and health for him. ⁷ His government shall be great and to his peace there is no boundary, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to reestablish it, and support it with judgment and justice, henceforth and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

¹ And there shall spring up a shoot from the root of Jessai; even from that root shall spring up a blooming shoot; ² and the spirit of God will rest upon him; a spirit of wisdom and understanding; a spirit of counsel and majesty; a spirit of knowledge and piety: ³ by this spirit he will be filled with the fear of God. He will not judge according to opinion, nor will he reprove according to report; ⁴ but he will administer justice to the lowly, and work conviction in the meek of the earth. And he will smite the earth with the word of his mouth, and with a breath from his lips destroy the wicked.

⁵ Behold the days are coming, saith the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous shoot, who shall reign king and understand and execute judgment and justice on the earth. ⁶ In his days Juda shall be saved and Israel shall dwell securely. And the name which the Lord will give him by the prophets shall be Josedek [Lord of righteousness.]

²³ And I will set up over them one shepherd who shall feed them, even my servant David, who shall be their shepherd: ²⁴ and I the Lord will be their God; and David shall be chief among them. I the Lord have spoken;

¹¹ In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David which hath fallen; I will rebuild those parts of it which have fallen to decay, and repair what have been demolished. I will indeed rebuild it as in the days of old,

¹ The genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

⁴ And having assembled all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them, where the Christ should be born. ⁵ And they told him. At Bethlehem of Judea. For thus it is written by the prophet, ⁶ "And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judea art by no means the least among the leaders of Juda; for out of thee shall come a leader, who shall tend my people Israel"

²⁷ As Jesus was departing thence, two blind men followed him, with loud outcries, saying, Son of David, take pity on us.

³³ And they who were in the vessel came and bowed down to him, saying, Thou art indeed Son of God.

¹³ When Jesus was going to Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I, the son of man, am? ¹⁴ And they said, Some say, John the Baptist; and some, Elias; and some Jeremias, or one of the prophets. ¹⁵ He saith to them, And who do ye say that I am? ¹⁶ Upon this Peter, in reply, said, Thou art The Christ, the son of the living God. ¹⁷ And Jesus answering, said to him, Happy art thou, Simon Barjona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed this to thee, but my father who is in heaven.

⁹ And the crowds that went before, and they who followed, shouted, saying, Hosannah to the son of David! Blessed he, who is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosannah in the highest!

⁶⁹ He indeed hath raised up for us a horn of salvation in the house of his servant David ⁷⁰ [as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets of old]

⁴⁹ In answer to this, Nathaniel said to him, Rabbi, thou art the son of God. Thou art the king of Israel.

⁶⁸ Whereupon Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of an everlasting life, ⁶⁹ and we believe and know that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. But others said', Doth the Christ come out of Galilee? ⁴² Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the town whence David was?

²⁸ And Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God.

²² Then having removed him, he raised up for them David to be king, to whom he gave this testimony, "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man according to my heart, who will execute all my orders." ²³ Of his seed God hath, according to promise, raised up for Israel a saviour, namely Jesus,

⁹ wherefore God highly exalted him, and granted him a name which is above every name, ¹⁰ that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those beneath the earth; ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father.

⁷ yet what were gain to me these I have counted refuse on account of the Christ ⁸ nay more, I do therefore indeed count all things but refuse, on account of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have given up all and account them but dregs, that I may gain Christ ⁹ and be found in him, not having for my righteousness, that which is of the law, but that which is by a belief in Christ"that which is of God"a righteousness for this belief. ¹⁰ That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, I have conformed myself to his death, ¹¹ where there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, scythian, bondman, freeman, but the all, and in all, Christ;

⁴ to whom you are come as to a living stone, by men indeed rejected, but with God chosen and precious, ⁵ and you yourselves as living stones are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ; ⁶ on which account also there is in the scripture this passage, "Behold I lay in Sion a chosen, precious, chief corner stone, and he who confideth in it, shall not be ashamed," ⁷ this honour then being for you who believe: but to the disbelieving, "the stone, which the builders rejected that which was for the head of the corner,"

¹³ And I heard every created being which is in the heaven and on the earth and underneath the earth and those which are in the sea, even all in them, saying, "to him who is sitting on the throne and to the lamb, be the blessing and the honour and the glory and the dominion for the ages of the ages." ¹⁴ And the four animate beings said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him who liveth for the ages of the ages.

² The Spirit of the Lord hath spoken by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

³⁶ For David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool."

²⁶ Now it had been revealed to him by the holy spirit, that he should not see death until he had seen the Christ of the Lord; ²⁷ and he had come by the spirit to the temple. And when the parents brought the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,

¹⁶ said, Men, brethren, It was necessary that this scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit predicted, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to them who laid hold on Jesus;

³⁰ Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that from the fruit of his loins he would, as far as regardeth the flesh, raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, ³¹ he spoke prophetically of the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul was not left in the mansion of the dead, nor did his flesh see corruption.

⁷ Wherefore as the Holy Spirit saith, "Today since you have heard his voice,

²¹ for prophecy was not uttered in former days at the will of man; but the holy men of God spoke by an impulse of the holy spirit.

¹⁰ I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, like the sound of a trumpet,

² Thereupon I was immediately enrapt, and behold a throne was set in the heaven, and one was sitting on the throne.

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between thee and the woman; and between thy seed and her seed. He will wound thy head, and thou wilt wound his heel."

⁸ "Ask of me, and I will give thee nations for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. ⁹ Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron. Thou shalt break them to pieces like a potter's vessel."

⁹ Thou wilt make them like an oven of fire, at the time of thy presence. The Lord with his wrath will confound them, and a fire shall devour them.

¹ A Psalm. By David. The Lord said to my Lord; sit at my right hand; till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

¹ [c] Who is this who is coming from Edom? What redness of mantles from Bosor! He so magnificent in apparel? He marcheth with majesty! [M] I proclaim righteousness and the judgment of salvation. ² [c] Why are thy garments red and thy clothing, as from a trodden wine vat? ³ [M] I am full of a country trodden down; and of the nations there is not a man with me. I have trodden them down in my wrath, and crumbled them like dust and shed their blood on the earth. ⁴ For the day of retribution came upon them and the year of redemption is at hand. ⁵ When I looked and there was no helper and observed that none upheld; then mine own arm delivered them. Mine indignation indeed was roused, ⁶ and I trampled them down in mine anger and shed their blood on the earth.

³⁴ For David did not ascend into the heavens; yet he saith, "The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, ³⁵ until I make thine enemies thy footstool."

² to the congregation of God which is at Corinth; to them who are hallowed by Christ Jesus; called to be holy, together with all those in every place who invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

²⁵ For he must reign until he hath put all the enemies under his feet.

⁸ nay more, I do therefore indeed count all things but refuse, on account of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have given up all and account them but dregs, that I may gain Christ

³ who being an effulgence of the glory, and an impress of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having by himself made a purification of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high,

¹³ And to which of these messengers did he ever say, "Sit at my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool."

¹² but he having offered for sins one sacrifice, to last for ever, sat down at the right hand of God, ¹³ thenceforth waiting till his enemies are made his footstool.

² looking forward to Jesus, the leader and perfecter of this faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured a cross, despising shame, and hath taken a seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁹ And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to come to a battle with him who was mounted on the horse and with his army.

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat thereon from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away and there was no place found for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God. And books were opened; and another book was opened namely that of Life. And the dead were judged by the writings in those books according to their works. ¹³ And the sea delivered up the dead in it; and death and the mansion of the dead delivered up the dead in them; and they were judged, every one according to his works. ¹⁴ And death and the mansion of the dead were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And whoever was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

⁵⁸ Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham was, I am.

³ concerning his son, [him who was of a seed of David with respect to flesh ⁴ him who was determinately marked out as son of God by a power, according to a spirit of holiness, of rising up from the dead,]

⁵ whose ancestors were the patriarchs, and from whom, with regard to flesh, the Christ is [descended] who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

⁶ who being in the form of God did not think it robbery to be like God, ⁷ but he emptied himself"having taken the form of a servant, being in the likeness of men, ⁸ and found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even the death of a cross;

¹⁶ [and unquestionably great is the mystery of this religion,] God hath been manifested in flesh, justified by spirit, hath appeared to messengers, been proclaimed among nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

¹⁴ As the children therefore were partakers of flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same in order that he might, by his death, put a stop to the operation of him who hath the power of death, that is the devil;

¹⁶ I Jesus have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the congregations. I am the root and the offspring of David; the bright and the morning star.

¹⁵ They were daunted. They answered not again. They have antiquated their own speeches. ¹⁶ I waited patiently: for I had not spoken. Because they stopped and made no reply,

² Why, when I came, was there no man? And why, when I called, did none answer? Is my hand unable to save? Or have I no power to rescue? Behold with my rebuke I can dry up the sea, and make the rivers a desert, so that the fishes thereof shall shrivel for want of water, and die for thirst. I can clothe the heaven with darkness, and make its covering like sackcloth.

⁴ The Lord Lord giveth me an instructed tongue, to know when it is proper to speak a word. He gave it me in the morning; he gave me in addition an ear to hear. ⁵ And the instruction of the Lord, Lord openeth mine ears and I am not rebellious, nor do I gainsay. ⁶ My back I have given to scourges, and my cheeks to be slapped with an open hand, and I turned not my face from the shame of spittles. ⁷ Indeed the Lord Lord was my helper; therefore I was not ashamed, but kept my countenance firm as a rock. I knew indeed that I should not be confounded, ⁸ because he who justified me is near at hand. Who is he that contendeth with me? Let him stand up with me face to face. Yes, let my accuser, whoever he be, come near me. ⁹ Behold the Lord, Lord will be my advocate; who can do {[a] An objection stated. [b] The answer.} me any evil? Behold you shall all wax old like a mantle, and the moth shall consume you.

²⁷ So in answer to Jesus, they said, We cannot tell. Thereupon Jesus said, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

³⁴ Whereupon Jesus observing that he had answered discreetly, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And, after that, no one ventured to ask him any questions.

¹⁷ And upon his saying this, all his opposers were ashamed, and the whole multitude expressed joy for all the glorious things which were done by him.

⁶ And to this they could not make reply.

⁴⁰ And after that they did not presume to ask him another question.

⁷ And as they continued asking him, he raised himself up, and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin throw the first stone at her. ⁸ Then he stooped down again and wrote on the ground. ⁹ But they who heard, being convicted by their own conscience, went out, one by one, the eldest first, even to the last, and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

¹⁴ And seeing the man who was cured standing with them, they could make no reply.
