⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and camels, into two bands;

¹¹ Deliver me from the hands of my brother Esau, for I fear him: lest he will come and smite the mother with the children.

³ "After that let us go to Bethel. I will make an altar there to God, who answered me when I was troubled and who has been with me wherever I have gone."

¹⁰ As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians bearing down on them! Extremely frightened, the Israelites cried out to the LORD.

⁴ The ropes of death encircled me, and streams of ruin overwhelmed me. ⁵ The cords of the grave surrounded me. The snares of death confronted me.

¹³ I have heard the slander of many; it is like terror all around me, as they conspire together and plot to take my life.

⁴ My heart is in turmoil within me. The terrors of death have seized me. ⁵ Fear and trembling have overcome me. Horror has overwhelmed me.

² From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart faints; Oh lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.

⁶ Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

⁵ Well will it be with the man who is kind, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with justice.

⁴ Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul.

¹¹ Discretion will protect you; understanding will watch over you,

²⁶ For his God instructs him aright, [and] teaches him.

²⁶ “You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was perfectly calm.

¹⁶ Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

³³ I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”

²² strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.

⁴ who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

⁸ We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we encountered in the province of Asia. We were under a burden far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. ⁹ Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. ¹⁰ He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. In Him we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver us,
