¹ And the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up from Egypt, and I brought you to the land that I had promised to your ancestors. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you. ² and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.' But you have not listened to my voice: why have you done this? ³ Therefore I tell you that I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you. ⁴ Because the angel of the LORD said these things to all of the Israelites, the people wept out loud, ⁵ They called that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there to the LORD. ⁶ And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his inheritance, to inherit the land. ⁷ The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works the LORD did for Israel. ⁸ Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten years old. ⁹ And they buried him within the bounds of his inheritance, in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim,—on the north of Mount Gaash. ¹⁰ After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who didn't know the LORD, nor the work which he had done for Israel. ¹¹ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and they served the Baals. ¹² They forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them. They bowed to them and provoked the LORD to anger. ¹³ And they forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. ¹⁴ Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. ¹⁵ Wherever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn to them: and they were in great distress. ¹⁶ And the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. ¹⁷ Yet they would not listen to their judges, but prostituted themselves to other gods. They worshiped them. They turned quickly, out of the way in which their fathers walked obeying the commandments of the LORD. ¹⁸ When the LORD established judges he supported each judge. He delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days the judge lived. He had compassion for them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them. ¹⁹ When the judge was dead they returned and corrupted themselves more than their fathers. They followed other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them. They did not give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. ²⁰ And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Because this nation has forsaken My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice, ²¹ I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died; ²² "That through them I may test Israel, to see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their fathers did." ²³ So the LORD left those nations; he did not drive them out at once, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

⁷ And the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

⁷ The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert. It was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. ⁸ He said: "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I am running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered. ⁹ Then the angel of the LORD told her: "Go back to your mistress and submit to her. ¹⁰ "I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count."

¹³ She called the name of the LORD, who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me, for she said, 'I have not seen the one who sees me.'"

⁷ "I will establish my covenant as a long lasting covenant between us. It will be for your descendants after you, for the generations to come. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. ⁸ "The whole land of Canaan, where you are now a guest (alien) (foreigner) (stranger), I will give a long lasting possession to you and your descendants after you. I will be their God."

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, Here am I. ¹² He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy, neither do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."

¹⁶ And he said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only child, ¹⁷ '"I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies' cities.

³ Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your seed I will give all these lands. And I will cause to rise My oath which I swore to your father Abraham. ⁴ I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and will give all these lands to your offspring. In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed,

¹⁶ the Angel who delivered me from all evils, bless these children! And let them be called by my name and by the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaak; and may they be increased to a great multitude on the earth!

² There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire coming from the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire but that it was not burning up. ³ Moses said, “I will go now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” ⁴ When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from the center of the bush, "Moses! Moses!" He said, "Here I am." ⁵ "Do not come any closer," God said. "Remove your sandals from your feet, because the place where you are standing is holy ground." ⁶ Then he said, "I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. ⁷ The LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. ⁸ I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

¹⁴ The LORD will fight for you, and you shall be still."

¹⁹ Then the angel of God, who was going in front of the camp of Israel, moved behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front of them and stood behind them,

² "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

²⁰ "Look, I'm sending an angel in front of you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place I've prepared.

¹⁴ He said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."

⁴² then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham; and I will remember the land.

⁴⁴ And in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am the LORD their God.

³⁴ "'You explored the land for forty days. So for forty years, one year for each day, you will suffer for your sins and know what it means for me to be against you.'

³⁴ Or has a god ever attempted to go to take for himself a nation from the midst of a nation, using trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

⁹ Know therefore that the LORD your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments,

¹⁰ And Joshua said, "Hereby ye shall know, that the living God is among you, and that he will, without fail, cast out before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perezites, the Gergesites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

¹³ Now when Joshua was near Jericho, lifting up his eyes he saw a man in front of him, with his sword uncovered in his hand: and Joshua went up to him and said, Are you for us or against us? ¹⁴ And he said to him, "Truly I am the commander of the army of the LORD. Now I have come." And Joshua fell facedown to the ground and worshipped, and said to him, "What does my lord say to his servant?"

⁵ They called that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there to the LORD.

³ The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, Look now, you are barren and childless but you will conceive and bear a son.

⁵¹ And he struck all the first-born in Egypt, the firstfruits of strength in the tents of Ham; ⁵² and brought out his people like sheep, and led them like a flock in the desert, ⁵³ He led them safely, so that they weren't afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

³⁴ I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered.

³⁶ He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood. ³⁷ He brought Israel out with silver and gold, and no one among his tribes stumbled. ³⁸ Egypt was glad when they departed, because the fear of them had fallen upon them.

⁴⁴ He gave them the lands of other nations. They inherited what others had worked for. ⁴⁵ that they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Praise the LORD.

⁹ In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.

²¹ For the sake of your name, do not despise us. Do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember your promise to us. Do not break it.

²⁰ "Thus says the LORD: 'If you could break my covenant with the day, and my covenant with the night, so that day and night would not come at their time, ²¹ Also my covenant with David my servant may be made void, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne, and with the Levites and priests my ministers.

³ In the womb he deceived his brother, and in his manhood he struggled with God. ⁴ He struggled with the angel and won. Jacob cried and pleaded with him. Jacob found him at Bethel, and he talked with him there. ⁵ even the LORD, the God of hosts; The LORD is his name of renown.

¹ And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. ² The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan. Yes, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you. Isn't this a burning stick plucked out of the fire?"

¹⁰ And I took my staff Kindness and broke it, to break my covenant that I had made with all the peoples.

¹ "Look, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, look, he comes." says the LORD of hosts.

³⁰ After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. ³¹ When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight. As he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came to him: ³² ‘I am the God of your Fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look. ³³ Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

¹¹ And he said: "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" ¹² Adam said: "The woman you put here with me gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

¹⁰ the LORD said: "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood (life) cries out to me from the ground.

³² You shall not make a covenant with them or with their gods. ³³ "Do not allow them to live in your land for they will make you sin against me. If you serve their gods it will be a snare to you."

²¹ And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you brought on them such a great sin?"

¹² Be very careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you are going, so they won't be a snare among you. ¹³ "Instead tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and cut down their Asherim. ¹⁴ for you shall worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. ¹⁵ lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they prostitute themselves after their gods, and they sacrifice to their gods, and they invite you, and you eat their sacrifice, ¹⁶ and you take from their daughters for your sons. and their daughters fornicate with their gods, and they lead your sons to fornicate with their gods.

⁵² then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their stone idols, destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places. ⁵³ and dispossess the land, and settle therein: for I give you the land to possess:

² and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you and you defeat them, then you must utterly destroy them. You must make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them, ³ "Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. ⁴ For that would turn away your sons from following me, that they may serve other gods. So the LORD's anger would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.

¹⁶ »Destroy all the peoples whom the LORD your God gives you. Do not look at them with pity. Do not serve their gods. For that would be a snare to you.

²⁵ "Burn the carved images of their gods with fire. Do not covet the silver or the gold that is on them. Do not take it for yourselves, or you will be snared by it. It is an abomination to the LORD your God. ²⁶ "Do not bring an abomination into your house. You must utterly detest it and you must utterly abhor it, for it is something banned."

² "Destroy all the places where the nations you dispossess serve their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. ³ »Tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars. Burn their Asherah poles with fire. Cut down the carved images of their gods and obliterate their name from that place.

¹⁶ But of the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you must save alive nothing that breathes; ¹⁷ you must utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, as the LORD your God has commanded you, ¹⁸ "Otherwise, they will teach you to do all the disgusting things they do for their gods. You will sin against the LORD your God.

²⁰ And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Because this nation has forsaken My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice,

¹ After these things were done, the captains came to me and said: "The people of Israel and the priests and Levites have not kept themselves separate from the people of the lands. They have taken part in the disgusting ways of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. ² "They have taken their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons. They have mingled the holy race with peoples around them. In fact the leaders and officials were first to do this evil." ³ When I heard this I tore my garment and my robe, and I pulled the hair out from my head and beard, and I sat appalled.

¹⁰ And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken thy commandments, ¹¹ which thou gavest us by the ministry of thy servants, the prophets, saying, The land which you are going to possess, is a land subject to change by the removal of the people of the nations for their abominations, with the filth of which they have filled it from one end to the other; ¹² And now do not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth forever, so that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your sons forever. ¹³ “After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

⁵⁵ He drove out nations before them and allotted their tribal inheritance, settling the tribes of Israel in their tents. ⁵⁶ But they tested and rebelled against God Most High and did not keep his statutes. ⁵⁷ They fell away and were as disloyal as their ancestors. They became unreliable, like a defective bow; ⁵⁸ And so they grieved him with their high places, and provoked him with their images.

³⁴ They did not destroy the peoples, as the LORD commanded them, ³⁵ but they mingled with the nations and learned their works, ³⁶ They served their idols, which became a snare to them. ³⁷ They sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons; ³⁸ and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was defiled with blood, ³⁹ Thus they defiled themselves by their deeds, And they prostituted themselves by their actions." ⁴⁰ Therefore the Lord was incensed against his people, and abhorred his inheritance.

⁵ the LORD says: "What bad thing (injustice) did your fathers find in me that they went so far away from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless (lead astray) themselves.

¹⁸ Now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Shihor? Or why do you to go on the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?

³¹ Generation, consider the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, 'We have broken loose. We will come to you no more?' ³² Can a virgin forget her finery, a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number. ³³ How you trim your way to seek love! Therefore even the wicked women you have taught your ways.

³⁶ Why do you go about so much, ever changing your way? You will be shamed by Egypt, just as you were shamed by Assyria.

²³ but I did give them this command: Obey me and I'll be your God, and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you so it will go well for you. ²⁴ But they did not listen, nor bow their ear, but walked in their own plans, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward. ²⁵ From the day your ancestors left the land of Egypt to this present time, I've sent all my servants, the prophets, to you, again and again. ²⁶ Yet they did not listen to Me nor bow their ear, but they stiffened their neck. They did more evil than their fathers. ²⁷ And speak thou to them all these words, and they will not hear to thee: and call to them, and they will not answer. ²⁸ "You will say to them: 'This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God or accept correction. Truth has perished and truth has been removed from their mouth.

¹⁴ Do not enter a mismatch with unbelievers; for what do righteousness and lawlessness have in common? And what fellowship does light have with darkness? ¹⁵ What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? ¹⁶ What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.” ¹⁷ Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.

⁸ Taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?

³³ "Do not allow them to live in your land for they will make you sin against me. If you serve their gods it will be a snare to you."

¹² Be very careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you are going, so they won't be a snare among you.

⁵⁵ “But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those you let remain of them will be like pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land in which you dwell.

¹³ know for certain that the LORD your God will not continue to drive out these nations ahead of you. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap for you, a whip to your backs, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.

²¹ I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

But Solomon clung to them to love. ³ He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. ⁴ When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father was. ⁵ And Solomon followed Ashtaroth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. ⁶ So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not fully follow after the LORD as David his father. ⁷ Then Solomon built a high place to Chemosh the idol of Moab, and to their king the idol of the children of Ammon.

⁶ So they came together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted there and said, "We have sinned against the LORD." Then Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.

¹ While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children from Israel gathered to him. And the people wept bitterly.

Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.'” ²¹ But the people conspired against him, and at the direct orders of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD's temple. ²² So King Joash did not remember the loyal love that Jehoiada had shown to him, and he killed his son. And as he was dying he said, "May the LORD see and avenge!"

¹³ And when you have seen it, you will be put to rest with your people, as your brother Aaron was:

¹⁶ And the Lord said to Moses, Now you are going to rest with your fathers; and this people will be false to me, uniting themselves to the strange gods of the land where they are going; they will be turned away from me and will not keep the agreement I have made with them.

¹² Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn't know the LORD.

¹² When your days are full and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you who will go out from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

¹² And the harp and the viol, the tambourine and flutes and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the work of his hands.

³ They use their tongues like a bow. Lies rather than truth fly throughout the land. They progress from one evil to another, and they don't know me," declares the LORD.

¹⁶ He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy. Then it was well. "Is that not what it means to know me?" Says the LORD.

³⁴ And they will teach no more every man his neighbor and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD, for they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity and I will remember their sin no more.

³⁶ For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep. His body was buried with his fathers and saw decay.

⁸ Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. ⁹ But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

¹⁶ They profess to know God, but by their actions they disown Him; they are detestable, disobedient, and useless for anything good.

¹³ The men of Sodom were wicked and sinned greatly against the LORD.

⁷ Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight. So the LORD killed him.

⁷ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and they served the Baals and the Asheroth.

¹² The people of Israel sinned against the LORD again. Because of this the LORD made King Eglon of Moab stronger than Israel.

¹ And again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and Ehud died.

¹ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD gave them into the hand of the Midianites for seven years.

³³ Later on, as soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites again committed spiritual adultery with the Baals, and appointed Baal-berith to be their god.

⁶ The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals and Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines; they forsook the LORD and didn't serve Him.

¹⁰ Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals."

¹ And again, the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

⁴ So the Israelites removed the Baals and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.

¹⁸ Then he said in answer: "I have not made trouble for Israel. You and your family have. You have disobeyed the LORD's commands and have gone after the Baals.

² but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also made casted images for the Baals.

² And he did evil in the eyes of the LORD according to the detestable things of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the Israelites. ³ For again he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had broken down, and raised up altars for the Baals, and made Asherahs and bowed himself to all the host of the heavens, and served them.

⁶ He also made his children to pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom; and he practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

¹² and from the sons of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 males;"

²³ How can you say, I am not defiled; I have not gone after the Baals? See your way in the valley, know what you have done! You are a swift camel crossing its ways;

¹⁴ »They have walked after the stubbornness of their heart and after the Baals as their fathers taught them.

¹³ "I will punish her for the days in which she burned incense to the Baals, when she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and went after her lovers, and forgot me," said the LORD. ¹⁴ Therefore, Look! I am going to allure her and bring her into the desert, and I will speak tenderly to her. ¹⁵ »I will give her vineyards from there and the valley of Achor for a door of hope. She will sing there as in the days of her youth and in the day when she came up out of Egypt. ¹⁶ And on that day— a declaration of the LORD— you will call me, "My husband;" you will no longer call me, "My Baal." ¹⁷ I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they will no longer be mentioned by their name.

⁵ That prophet or diviner of dreams must be executed, because he advocated rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and because he lured you from the way in which the LORD your God instructed you to live. Purge the evil from among you."

¹⁸ Be alert so there is no man, woman, family, or a tribe whose heart is turning away from the LORD your God to go and serve the gods of those nations. "Be alert so there will be no root among you that produces poisonous and bitter fruit,

²⁵ Then they will answer themselves, 'Because they've abandoned the covenant of their LORD, the God of their ancestors that he had made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.

⁸ When they chose new gods, the war was at the gates. Was there a shield or spear to be seen among forty thousand in Israel?

¹¹ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and they served the Baals.

¹⁰ They put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.

⁵ And Solomon followed Ashtaroth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

³³ because they have forsaken Me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the goddess of the sons of Ammon, and have not walked in My ways, to do what is right in My eyes, and to keep My statutes and My judgments, as David his father did.

¹³ The king defiled the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mountain of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon.

⁵ For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"),

²⁰ No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons. ²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: you cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of demons. ²² Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

²⁸ then I will go against you in hostile anger, and also I myself will discipline you seven times for your sins.

³⁷ They will stumble over one another, as it were before the sword, when no one pursues: and you will have no power to stand before your enemies.

¹⁴ Behold you are risen up in your fathers' stead, a set of sinful men, to augment the wrath of the Lord against Israel.

²⁰ the LORD will send on you cursing, confusion and rebuke in all that you put your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your doings by which you have forsaken Him.

²⁵ "the LORD will cause you to be stricken before your enemies. You will go out one way against them, and flee seven ways from them. You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁵⁸ If you will not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, the LORD your God,

¹⁹ because when such a person hears the words of this oath, he will bless himself and say: 'I will have a peaceful life, even though I'm determined to be stubborn.' By doing this he will be sweeping away both watered and parched ground alike.' ²⁰ the LORD will never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and / His jealousy will burn against that man. Every curse which is written in this book will rest on him. the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.

¹⁷ Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they will be devoured and many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us? ¹⁸ But I will certainly hide my face on that day, because of all of the evil that they did because they turned to other gods.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had delivered them up?

¹² Therefore the children of Israel can’t stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. ¹³ Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow. For thus says LORD, the God of Israel, There is what has been set apart in the midst of thee, O Israel. Thou cannot stand before thine enemies until ye take aw

¹⁹ And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron.

³⁴ The Amorites pressed the descendants of Dan to the hill country, and they did not allow them to come down to the plain;

⁷ The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and they served the Baals and the Asheroth. ⁸ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the Israelites served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.

² So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, and he was living in Harosheth Haggoyim.

⁷ In his burning anger against Israel, he sold them into domination by the Philistines and the Ammonites,

²⁰ And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and gave them into the hand of the plunderers, until He had cast them out from His presence.

⁵ "No one could come and go in peace at that time. This is because everyone living in the land had a lot of turmoil.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

⁹ Yet you have rejected and disgraced us. You do not even go along with our armies. ¹⁰ You make us retreat from the enemy. Those who hate us rob us at will.

¹² You sell your people for nothing, and have gained nothing from their sale.

⁴⁰ Therefore the Lord was incensed against his people, and abhorred his inheritance. ⁴¹ He handed them over to other nations, and those who hated them ruled them. ⁴² Their enemies oppressed them and made them subject to their power.

¹ Thus said the LORD, Where this writing of cutting off of your mother which I sent her away? or which of my creditors whom I sold you to him? Behold, in your iniquities ye sold yourselves, and in your transgressions your mother was sent away.

¹⁰ "Even if you would defeat the entire Babylonian army so that they had only a few badly wounded men left in their tents, they would get up and burn down this city!"’"

¹⁴ And if you will not listen to Me, and do not do all these commands; ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self abhors my regulations, to not carry out all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I in turn will do this to you: then I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed in vain, and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ I will set my face against you, and you will be struck before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; and you will flee when no one pursues you. ¹⁸ "'If you still will not listen to me, I will discipline you seven times for your sins. ¹⁹ I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like bronze. ²⁰ and your strength will be spent in vain, for your land will not yield its increase, nor will the trees of the land yield their fruit. ²¹ If you walk contrary to me, and will not hearken to me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you for your sins. ²² "'I will send wild animals among you. They will rob you of your children. They will destroy your cattle, and make you so few that your roads will be deserted. ²³ And if over these things you should not be corrected, but should go to me sideways, ²⁴ I also will walk contrary to you, and will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ I will bring the sword on you avenging the vengeance of the covenant. When you will be gathered into your cities then I will send the plague into your midst, and you will be given into the hand of the enemy. ²⁶ When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven and they will deliver your bread again by weight and you will eat and not be satisfied. ²⁷ "'If in spite of this you do not listen to me and still resist me, ²⁸ then I will go against you in hostile anger, and also I myself will discipline you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ so that ye shall eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. ³⁰ I will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and cast your dead bodies upon the bodies of your idols; and my soul will abhor you. ³¹ I will lay your cities waste, and will bring your sanctuaries to desolation. I will not take delight in the sweet fragrance of your offerings. ³² And I myself will lay waste the land, and your enemies who are living in it shall be appalled over it. ³³ I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you. Your land will be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste. ³⁴ Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate and you are in your enemies' land. Even then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. ³⁵ As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, even the rest which it did not have in your sabbaths, when you lived on it. ³⁶ "'As for those of you who are left, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies: and the sound of a driven leaf will put them to flight; and they shall flee, as one flees from the sword; and they will fall when no one pursues. ³⁷ They will stumble over one another, as it were before the sword, when no one pursues: and you will have no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸ You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will devour you. ³⁹ "'Those who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors. ⁴⁰ "'However if they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors and the treacherous things they did to oppose me, ⁴¹ I also will walk contrary to them and will bring them into the land of their enemies. If then their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they then pay for their iniquity, ⁴² then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham; and I will remember the land. ⁴³ The land also will be left by them, and will enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them; and they will accept the punishment of their iniquity because they rejected my ordinances, and their soul abhorred my statutes. ⁴⁴ And in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am the LORD their God. ⁴⁵ but for their sakes I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD. ⁴⁶ These are the rules and the regulations and the laws that the LORD gave between himself and the Israelites on Mount Sinai through Moses.

²⁵ "When you have had children and grandchildren and you have grown old in the land and you act corruptly and you make a divine image of the form of anything and you do evil in the eyes of the LORD your God, thus provoking him to anger, ²⁶ I call Heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land which you are crossing over Jordan to possess. You shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed. ²⁷ The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you shall be left few in number among the nations, where the LORD will drive you. ²⁸ There you will serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

¹⁵ "But if you don't obey the LORD your God and faithfully carry out all his commands and statutes that I'm giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you and overwhelm you. ¹⁶ You shall be cursed in the city, and cursed in the field. ¹⁷ Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. ²⁰ the LORD will send on you cursing, confusion and rebuke in all that you put your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your doings by which you have forsaken Him. ²¹ The LORD will cause you to be ill with long-lasting diseases until you are wiped out from the land that you are entering to possess. ²² the LORD shall smite you with attenuation, with fever and inflammation, with hot heat and drought, with blasting and mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish. ²³ The sky above your head will become bronze while the ground beneath you will become iron. ²⁴ the LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust. It will come down on you from the sky, until you are destroyed. ²⁵ "the LORD will cause you to be stricken before your enemies. You will go out one way against them, and flee seven ways from them. You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ Your bodies will be meat for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth; there will be no one to send them away. ²⁷ the LORD will strike you with the boil of Egypt and with the tumours, the scurvy and the itch, from which you cannot be healed. ²⁸ The LORD shall strike you with madness, and blindness, and confusion of mind: ²⁹ and you will grope at noonday, as the blind man gropes in darkness. And you will not prosper in your ways. And you will only be oppressed and robbed always and there will be none to save you. ³⁰ You'll be engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You'll build a house but you won't live in it. You'll plant a vineyard but you won't harvest it. ³¹ Your ox will be slain before your eyes and you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be violently taken away from before your face and will not be restored to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies and you will have none to save you. ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on longingly for them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything. ³³ A people whom you don't know will devour what your land and labor produces. You'll be only oppressed and discouraged continually ³⁴ so that the sights that you see with your eyes will drive you mad. ³⁵ The LORD shall strike you in the knees, and in the legs, with painful boils that cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot unto the top of your head. ³⁶ "the LORD will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods made of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a wonder and a name of shame among all the nations where the Lord will take you. ³⁸ You shall carry much seed out to the field, and you shall gather in little; for the locusts will devour it. ³⁹ You will plant vineyards and dress them, but you will neither drink of the wine, nor harvest, because worms will eat them. ⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you won't anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off. ⁴¹ You will beget sons and daughters, but they will not be your, for they will go into captivity. ⁴² »Locusts will take over all your trees and the fruit of your land. ⁴³ The foreigner who is among you will mount up above you higher and higher, and you will come down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He will lend to you and you will not lend to him. He will be the head and you will be the tail. ⁴⁵ All these curses will come on you, and will pursue you and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you didn't listen to the LORD your God's voice, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded you. ⁴⁶ They will be for a sign and for a wonder to you and to your offspring forever. ⁴⁷ "Because you didn't serve the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly, despite the abundance of everything you have, ⁴⁸ therefore you will serve your enemies whom Yahweh sends against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in lack of all things. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. ⁴⁹ "the LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand, ⁵⁰ A hard-faced nation, who will have no respect for the old or mercy for the young: ⁵¹ And it shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed, and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, calves of your herds, and lambs of your flock until it has destroyed you. ⁵² "They will blockade all your cities until the high, fortified walls you trust come down everywhere in your land. They will blockade all the cities everywhere in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. ⁵³ "Because of the hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade, you will eat the flesh of your own children, the sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you. ⁵⁴ "The kindest and most sensitive man among you will become stingy toward his brother, the wife he loves, and the children he still has left. ⁵⁵ »He will give none of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all that he has left. These are hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade of all your cities. ⁵⁶ "The kindest and most sensitive woman among you, so sensitive and tender that she would not even step on an ant, will become stingy toward the husband she loves or toward her own son or daughter. ⁵⁷ She will eat her afterbirth and her newborn children secretly since there will be nothing left on account of the siege and distress with which your enemy will oppress you in your cities." ⁵⁸ If you will not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, the LORD your God, ⁵⁹ then he will inflict extraordinary plagues on you and your children, great and lasting plagues, and severe and lasting illnesses. ⁶⁰ "He will bring all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded. They will cling to you. ⁶¹ "the LORD will also bring you every kind of sickness and plague not written in this Book of the Law. They will continue until you are dead. ⁶² "You were at one time as numerous as the stars in the sky. But only a few of you will be left. This is because you did not obey the LORD your God. ⁶³ Just as the LORD delighted to prosper and increase you, so now the LORD will delight to destroy, exterminate, and banish you from the land that you are about to enter to possess." ⁶⁴ "He'll scatter you among the peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you'll serve other gods made of wood and stones, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. ⁶⁵ Among those nations you'll have no rest. There'll be no resting place for the soles of your feet. Instead, the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a despairing spirit. ⁶⁶ You'll cling to life, being fearful by both night and day, with no assurance of survival. ⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, If only it was evening! And at evening you will say, If only morning would come! Because of the fear in your hearts and the things which your eyes will see. ⁶⁸ Finally, the LORD will bring you back to Egypt by ship, a place that I said you'll never see again. There you'll try to sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you."

⁴⁰ For I lift up My hand to heaven and say, as surely as I live forever, ⁴¹ if I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me.

¹⁵ However, just as all of the good things have come about that the LORD your God promised, so also the LORD will bring upon you all of the threats until he has destroyed you from possessing this good land that he has given you. ¹⁶ If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD's anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you."

⁹ The Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was very distressed.

⁶ And when the men of Israel saw that they were straitened (for the people were distressed), they hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in dens, and in pits.

²⁴ The men of Israel were in distress that day because Saul had bound the people with an oath saying, Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, and I have been avenged of my enemies. So none of the people ate any food.

⁶ David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because they were grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

⁸ But if that nation about which I spoke turns from its evil way, I'll change my mind about the disaster that I had planned for it.

¹⁰ For I have set my face against this city for evil and not for good," declares the LORD. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire." '

¹¹ Therefore thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel: 'Look, I am determined to bring disaster on you, even to exterminate all Judah.

²⁷ For I have watched over them, to hurt them, and not to do them good. And all the Jews dwelling in the land of Egypt shall perish by sword and by famine, until they are utterly consumed.

³ Therefore, thus says the LORD: Look! I am planning disaster against this family from which you will not be able to remove your necks. You will not walk proudly, for it is a time of disaster.

⁸ We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;

⁹ And when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the sons of Israel, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. ¹⁰ And the spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and he prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim.

¹⁵ And the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and a left-handed man. And the Israelites sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab through him.

⁵ She lived under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came up to her for judgment.

¹⁴ And the Lord, turning to him, said, Go in the strength you have and be Israel's saviour from Midian: have I not sent you?

¹¹ Then the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel and he delivered you from the hand of your enemies on every side, so that you lived securely.

²⁷ So you delivered them into the control of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed, they cried out to you, and you heard from heaven. In your great compassion you gave them deliverers who rescued them from the control of their enemies.

⁴³ Many times He delivered them, but they rebelled in their counsel and sank in their iniquities. ⁴⁴ Yet he looked upon their distress when he heard their cry. ⁴⁵ he remembered his covenant and according to the multitude of his mercies;

²⁰ All this took about four hundred fifty years. After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.

⁸ They have turned aside quickly from the way that I commanded them; they have made for themselves a cast-image bull calf, and they bowed to it, and they sacrificed to it, and they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'"

⁷ And they may no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat-idols after which they were prostituting. This is a lasting statute for them throughout their generations." '

¹² "Then the LORD said to me, 'Get going! Go down from here at once! Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned quickly from the way that I commanded them, and have cast an idol for their use.'

¹⁶ »I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You made yourselves an idol, cast in the shape of a calf. You turned aside quickly from the way the LORD had commanded you.

²⁴ And the people replied unto Joshua, We will serve the LORD our God and hear his voice.

⁷ The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works the LORD did for Israel.

⁵ and they said to him, Look, you are old and your sons don't walk in your ways; now appoint a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁶ Samuel was displeased when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." So Samuel prayed to the LORD. ⁷ The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the people in all that they say to you. In fact, it's not you they have rejected, but rather they have rejected me from being their king. ⁸ As they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, in forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they also do to you.

¹² But when you saw that Nahash, king of the Ammonites, was coming to fight you, you said to me, 'No, let a king rule over us instead,' even though the LORD your God was your king.

¹⁷ Isn't it wheat harvest today? I will call to the LORD to send thunder and rain, and you shall know and see that your wickedness is great which you have done in the eyes of the LORD, in asking for a king.

¹⁹ And all the people said to Samuel, Pray to the LORD your God for your servants, and not we will die, for we have added this evil to all our sins to ask a king for ourselves.

¹⁵ The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

²⁷ Those who are far from you will perish. You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you.

³⁹ Thus they defiled themselves by their deeds, And they prostituted themselves by their actions."

⁴³ Many times He delivered them, but they rebelled in their counsel and sank in their iniquities.

² Judge your mother, judge her: because she is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her put away her fornications from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts.

⁶ I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you to the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel.

¹ Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls came and told me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. ² With whom the kings of the earth have committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her adultery. ³ And the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, where I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and of the filthiness of her adulteries: ⁵ And on her forehead a name was written, "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."

⁶ the LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth. His heart was grieved with pain.

²⁴ God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

¹² God said: "I will be with you! This shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain."

³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people, and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none left, slave or free.

⁵ No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

¹⁶ When they put away their foreign gods and served the LORD, he brought Israel's misery to an end.

⁴ Then Jehoahaz prayed to the LORD. the LORD listened to him. He saw how cruelly the king of Aram crushed Israel.

²² Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. ²³ But the LORD was merciful unto them, and had compassion on them, and looked upon them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and did not desire to destroy them or to cast them from his presence as yet.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the LORD; I will set him in safety from those who malign him.

¹³ Relent, LORD. How long? Have compassion on your servants.

⁷ At one moment I may speak about a nation or a kingdom to uproot it, pull it down, or destroy it. ⁸ But if that nation about which I spoke turns from its evil way, I'll change my mind about the disaster that I had planned for it. ⁹ At another moment I may speak about a nation or kingdom to build it or plant it. ¹⁰ But if it does evil in my sight, to not listen to my voice, then I will relent concerning the good that I said I would do to it.

⁸ "How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me. All my compassion is aroused.

¹⁰ And when God saw their works, how they turned from their wicked ways, he repented on the evil which he said he would do unto them, and did it not.

⁹ One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent. ¹⁰ for I am with you and no one shall attack and harm you, for I have many people in this city."

¹¹ And the land had rest forty years,—and Othniel son of Kenaz, died. ¹² The people of Israel sinned against the LORD again. Because of this the LORD made King Eglon of Moab stronger than Israel.

²³ For rebellion is like the sin of divination; arrogance is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you from being king!"

¹⁷ Now after the death of Jehoiada the leaders of Judah came and paid homage to the king. And the king listened to them. ¹⁸ They abandoned the LORD's temple and the God of their fathers, and they served Asherim and idols. As a result this guilt of theirs resulted in wrath coming upon Judah and Jerusalem.

⁸ They should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

¹⁷ At that time they will call Jerusalem 'The Throne of the LORD,' and all the nations will be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem, and they will no longer go after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

¹² And you have done more evil than your fathers. For, behold, you each one walk after the stubbornness of his evil heart, without listening to Me.

¹⁷ They say continually to those who despise me, the LORD has said, You will have peace. And to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, No evil will come upon you.

³² Fill up, then, the measure of the sins of your fathers.

³ Then Moses came and put before the people all the words of the Lord and his laws: and all the people, answering with one voice, said, Whatever the Lord has said we will do. ⁴ Moses wrote down all the LORD’s words. Early the next morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain. He erected twelve sacred stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. ⁵ He sent young Israelite men to offer up burnt offerings and sacrifice bulls as peace offerings to the LORD. ⁶ And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar. ⁷ He took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do and obey." ⁸ And Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and he said, "Look, the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."

¹⁰ And now leave me alone so that my anger may blaze against them, and let me destroy them, and I will make you into a great nation." ¹¹ And Moses implored the LORD his God, and he said, "Why, the LORD, should your anger blaze against your people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?

¹⁰ All of you stand today in the presence of the LORD your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel, ¹¹ along with your children, your wives, even the foreigner in your camp, including the woodchopper and the water drawer ¹² in order for you to enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, and into his oath that the LORD your God is making with you today, ¹³ that he may establish you today as his people, and that he may be your God, as he spoke to you and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

²² For a fire has been kindled in My anger, and it burns to the lowest Sheol, and consumes the earth and its produce; and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

¹⁶ If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD's anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you."

²¹ And the people said to Joshua, "No, we will serve the LORD." ²² Joshua responded, "You are giving testimony against yourselves, that you have chosen to serve the LORD." They replied, "We are witnesses!" ²³ Joshua said, "Therefore abandon the foreign gods that are among you, and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel." ²⁴ And the people replied unto Joshua, We will serve the LORD our God and hear his voice. ²⁵ Joshua made a covenant for the people that day at Shechem. He gave them laws and rules to follow.

¹⁴ Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

⁸ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the Israelites served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.

³² It won't be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke my covenant, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD.

³⁷ "I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant;

³ Therefore I tell you that I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.

³ the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath.

²⁴ because they had not executed my ordinances, but had rejected my statutes, and had profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.

¹ After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

² "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way these 40 years in the desert, to humble and test you in order to make known what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

¹⁶ and fed you in the desert with manna that neither you nor your ancestors had known, to humble and test you so that things go well with you later.

³ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

¹ Now these are the nations that the LORD left to test the Israelites who had not known all the wars of Canaan. ² He did this to teach warfare to the generations of the children of Israel who had not had previous battle experience. ³ the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath. ⁴ They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the LORD's commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

³¹ When the leaders of Babylon sent ambassadors to ask him about the miraculous sign that had happened in the land, God left him. God did this to test him, to find out everything that was in Hezekiah's heart.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

¹⁰ For you, God, tested us, to purify us like fine silver.

³ The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold: and the LORD tries hearts.

² "But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like launderer's soap; ³ "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. He will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer to the LORD offerings in righteousness.
