¹ I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

²¹ "Have pity on me, my friends! Have pity on me because God's hand has struck me down.

²⁰ You who have caused me to see many troubles and evils, you will again revive me. And from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.

⁷ Your wrath lies heavily upon me; You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah.

¹⁵ Ever since I was young, I have been suffering and near death. I have endured your terrors, and now I am in despair. ¹⁶ Your burning anger has swept over me. Your terrors have destroyed me.

³ He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised, and we esteemed him not

¹⁷ I didn't sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice. I sat alone because of your hand, for you have filled me with indignation. ¹⁸ Why is my pain unending and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You are like a deceptive brook, whose waters cannot be depended on.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born; the day wherein my mother bore me, let it not be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man, that brought my father the tidings, to make him glad, saying, "Thou hast gotten a son." ¹⁶ May that man be like the cities that the LORD overthrew without compassion. Let him hear a cry in the morning, and a battle cry at noon, ¹⁷ because he did not kill me in the womb, and my mother was not made my grave, and her womb always with child." ¹⁸ Why did I come out from the womb, to see toil, and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit there was no water, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

¹² Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look, and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which is brought on me, with which the LORD has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. ¹³ From on high He sends fire; into my bones He makes it descend; He spreads a net for my feet; He turns me back; He makes me desolate, languishing all the day." ¹⁴ My rebellion was bound as a yoke, with his hand it was fastened together; it was put on my neck and caused my strength to fail. The Lord gave me into the hands of those whom I cannot withstand.
