⁵² Those who are my enemies, without a cause, have chased me about like a bird.

¹⁰ Look, today your eyes have seen how the LORD had delivered you into my hand in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, I will not lift up my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD's anointed. ¹¹ »My master, look at this! The border of your robe is in my hand! I cut off the border of your robe and did not kill you. You should know and be able to see I mean no harm or rebellion. I have not sinned against you! But you are trying to ambush me in order to take my life. ¹² May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge the wrong you have done me; but my hand shall not be against you. ¹³ "An old proverb says: 'Only evil people do evil things.' So I will not harm you. ¹⁴ Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea? ¹⁵ May the LORD therefore be judge, and judge between you and me, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.

²⁸ Please forgive the offense of your servant. For the LORD will certainly make a strong dynasty for your majesty, for your majesty is fighting the LORD's battles. May evil not be found in you for all of your life. ²⁹ And though men have risen up to pursue you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord will be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD your God. And the souls of your enemies, them he will sling out as from the hollow of a sling.

¹⁸ Why does my lord pursue his servant? What have I done? What evil am I guilty of? ¹⁹ Now let your majesty listen to the words of his servant. If the LORD incited you against me, then may he accept an offering. But if it is people, may they be cursed before the LORD, because they have driven me out today from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD by saying, 'Go serve other gods.' ²⁰ And so then, do not let my blood fall to the ground away from the presence of the LORD, for the king of Israel has gone out to seek a single flea, as one hunts a partridge in the mountains."

¹ In the LORD, I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, "Flee as a bird to your mountain."

⁷ For they have hidden their pit-net for me without cause; without cause they have dug for my soul.

¹⁹ Let not those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me. Nor let those who hate me without cause wink the eye.

⁴ Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head. My persecutors are mighty, and they want to destroy me. Must I be forced to return what I did not steal?

³ And, with words of hatred, have they surrounded me, and have made war upon me without cause:

¹⁶¹ Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles because of your word.

¹⁵ The princes were angry with Jeremiah and struck him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison. ¹⁶ Jeremiah went into a prison cell, and he stayed there a long time.

¹⁸ Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, "What offense have I committed against you, your officials, or these people that you have put me in prison?

⁴ Then the officials said to the king, "Let this man be put to death because he's undermining the efforts of the soldiers who remain in this city and that of all the people by speaking words like these to them. Indeed, this man is not seeking the well-being of this people, but rather their harm." ⁵ King Zedekiah said, "Look, he's in your hands, and the king can do nothing to you." ⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit there was no water, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated Me without reason.’
