¹ The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:" ² These proverbs are for gaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; ³ To receive the discipline of wisdom, justice, and right, and equity; ⁴ for giving prudence to the naïve, knowledge and discretion to the young. ⁵ Let the wise listen and increase their learning; let the person of understanding receive guidance ⁶ to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise. ⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. ⁸ My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching: ⁹ for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck. ¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, do not comply with them;" ¹¹ If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let's swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those who go down into the pit. ¹³ We'll find all valuable wealth. We'll fill our houses with plunder. ¹⁴ Throw in your lot with us. We'll all have one purse." ¹⁵ My son, do not go along with them, and keep your feet away from their paths! ¹⁶ for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood. ¹⁷ Look, it is useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds, ¹⁸ but these people lie in wait for their own blood. They ambush only themselves. ¹⁹ Such is the way of all those who seek illicit gain it takes away the lives of those who possess it. ²⁰ Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares. ²¹ At the corner of noisy streets she calleth, at the entrances of gates; in the city she sayeth her speeches: ²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ May you turn to my argument! Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you; I will make my words known to you. ²⁴ Because your ears were shut to my voice; no one gave attention to my out-stretched hand; ²⁵ because you neglected all my advice and did not want my correction, ²⁶ I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you, ²⁷ when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you. ²⁸ Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me; ²⁹ Since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD, ³⁰ Consented not to my counsel, disdained all my rebuke, ³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with the fruit of their own schemes. ³² for the waywardness of the simple ones will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. ³³ But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm."

²⁴ And David comforted his wife Bathsheba. And he went into her, and lay with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him, ²⁵ and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake.

¹² And Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.

³¹ For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. ³² He spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs numbered one thousand five.

⁹ »‘You will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon (peace), and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign.

⁵ And of all my sons, for the LORD has given me many sons, He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD, over Israel.

²⁸ He died at a very old age, wealthy and respected, and his son Solomon succeeded him as king.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grieves his mother.

¹ These are more wise sayings of Solomon, copied out by the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah.

¹ The words of the preacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem.

⁹ And besides that Koheleth was wise, he also taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

²⁵ "I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

⁵ »I have taught you laws and rules as the LORD my God commanded me. You must obey them when you enter the land and take possession of it. ⁶ Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and discernment in the eyes of people who'll listen to all these decrees. Then they'll say: 'Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people.'

⁹ So give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people, so I can discern between good and evil. Otherwise, how shall I be able to govern this great people of yours?" ¹⁰ The LORD was pleased that Solomon had asked for this, ¹¹ And God said to him, Because your request is for this thing, and not for long life for yourself or for wealth or for the destruction of your haters, but for wisdom to be a judge of causes; ¹² "I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had. There has never been nor will ever be anyone like you.

⁵ Get wisdom. Get understanding. Do not forget, neither swerve from the words of my mouth. ⁶ "Do not abandon her, and she will protect you. Love her, and she will watch over you. ⁷ Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

⁴ Say to wisdom, You are my sister, and call understanding your kinsman,

⁵ You simple, understand prudence! You fools, be of an understanding heart!

¹⁶ How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding instead of silver!

¹⁶ Is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom? He has no sense!

¹⁵ From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, ¹⁷ so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

²⁸ And when all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had given, they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to exercise justice.

²² "Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you, ² so as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ if, indeed, you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, ⁴ If you seek it as for silver And search for it as for buried treasures, ⁵ then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. ⁷ He lays up sound wisdom for the upright. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, ⁸ guarding the paths of the just and protecting the way of his faithful ones. ⁹ Then you will understand what is right, just, and upright every good path.

¹⁰ Receive my instruction rather than silver, knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ because wisdom is better than precious gems and nothing you desire can compare to it."

⁷ The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul, The testimonies of the LORD are stedfast, Making wise the simple,

¹¹ Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁹ BET How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

¹³⁰ The unfolding of your words gives light. It gives understanding to the simple.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ May you turn to my argument! Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you; I will make my words known to you.

¹⁰ For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. ¹¹ Discretion will protect you; understanding will watch over you,

²¹ My son, keep good sense, and do not let wise purpose go from your eyes.

⁷ And I saw among the simple, I observed among the youth, a young man lacking ⌊sense⌋, ⁸ Passing in the street near her corner; and he will step the way of her house, ⁹ at twilight, at the day's evening, in the midst of night and the darkness. ¹⁰ Behold, there a woman met him with the attire of a prostitute, and with crafty intent. ¹¹ She is loud and defiant. Her feet don’t stay in her house. ¹² Now in the street, now in the square, at every corner she lies in wait. ¹³ So she grabs hold of him and kisses him, with a brazen face she speaks to him, ¹⁴ "I have given my peace offerings, and today I fulfilled my vows. ¹⁵ So I have come out to meet you, to seek your face, and I have found you. ¹⁶ "I covered my bed with fine linen from Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us revel in love until the morning, let us delight ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For my husband is not at home, he has gone on a long journey: ²⁰ He has taken a bag of money with him. He will come home at the full moon." ²¹ With her fair words she overcame him, forcing him with her smooth lips. ²² He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose. ²³ until an arrow pierces his entrails, like a bird rushing into a snare, but he does not know that it will cost him his life. ²⁴ Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth.

¹² I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion.

¹⁷ I love those who love me, and those who seek me will find me.

³² Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways.

⁴ "Let whoever is naïve, turn in here." To anyone lacking sense, she says, ⁵ "Come! Eat my food, and drink the wine that I have mixed. ⁶ Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding."

⁹ Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

⁸ And a highway will be there, and it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it will be for those who walk in the Way. Wicked fools will not go there.

²² Flee the lusts of youth; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁶ Similarly, exhort the young men to be self-controlled,

³² David said to Abigail: "Blessed is the LORD the God of Israel, who sent you today to meet me. ³³ and your discretion is blessed and you are blessed, who have kept me this day from blood guiltiness and from avenging myself with my own hand.

¹⁶ And it happened that while he was speaking to him, he said to him, "Have we appointed you as a counselor to the king? Stop—why should you be killed?" So the prophet stopped and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice."

¹⁰ Therefore listen to me, O man of heart; far be it from God to commit iniquity; and from the Almighty, to do wrong.

¹⁶ "But if you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say.

³⁴ May men of understanding say, and the wise mighty hearken to me.

⁹⁸ Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, because they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more insight than all my teachers, for your laws are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I have more common sense than the elders, for I observe your precepts.

⁹ Counsel a wise man, and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he will add to his learning.

¹ Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge. He that hates reproof is stupid.

¹⁵ I speak to reasonable people; judge for yourselves what I say.

⁸ I speak to him audibly and in visions and not in riddles. If he gazes at the image of the LORD, why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?"

⁴ I will focus my attention on a proverb; I will use the harp to expound my riddle.

² I will open my mouth in parables. I will utter dark sayings of old,

¹¹ The words of the wise are like goads; yes, their collected words are like nails driven home; they are given from one Shepherd.

¹⁰ Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why do You speak to the people in parables?” ¹¹ He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. ¹² Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. ¹³ This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.’ ¹⁴ In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled: ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. ¹⁵ For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’ ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear; ¹⁷ For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

³⁴ Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds with parables. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. ³⁵ So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

⁵¹ Have you understood all this?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they answered. ⁵² He said to them: Therefore, every scribe that is trained for the kingdom of heaven, is like the master of a house, who brings out of his treasury things new and old.

¹¹ He said to them, "The secret about the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside, everything comes in parables

³⁴ And he did not speak to them without a parable; but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

³⁰ So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. ³¹ "How can I", the eunuch said: "unless someone explains it to me?" He invited Philip to come and sit with him.

¹⁴ But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their sensibilities to distinguish good from evil.

¹⁶ He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

²⁸ And he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to eschew evil is understanding.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who do them have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

²⁹ Since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD, ³⁰ Consented not to my counsel, disdained all my rebuke,

¹² And you say, How I have hated discipline, And my heart has spurned correction!" ¹³ I did not obey my teachers and did not listen to my instructors.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

⁵ A fool despises his father's correction, but he who heeds reproof shows prudence.

³³ The fear of the LORD teaches wisdom, and humility precedes honor.

² A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion.

¹³ Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

¹⁸ Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. ¹⁹ And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. ²¹ But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”

²⁸ And since they did not see fit to retain the knowledge of God, God gave them over to a base mind, to do what ought not to be done.

³ Each of you must revere your mother and your father, and you must keep my Sabbaths; I am the LORD your God.

¹⁸ "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not listen or obey his father or his mother when they chastise him, ¹⁹ then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city and to the gate of his place. ²⁰ "They shall say to the elders of his city: This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious! He will not obey us! He is a glutton and a drunkard. ²¹ All the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall remove the evil from among you. All Israel shall hear, and fear.

²⁵ If a person sins against another, God will mediate for him, but if a person sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to their father; for the LORD wanted to put them to death.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, do not comply with them;"

¹⁵ My son, do not go along with them, and keep your feet away from their paths!

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you,

¹ My son, do not forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments:

¹ Listen, sons, to a father's instruction. Pay attention and know understanding; ² for I give you sound learning. Do not forsake my law. ³ For I was a son unto my father, a tender and an only child before my mother. ⁴ Father taught me. He said: »Remember my words in your heart. Obey my commandments and live.

¹ My son, pay attention to my wisdom, and listen closely to my insight, ² that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge.

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake your mother's teaching.

¹ My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks his father, and rejects obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley pick it out, and the young eagles eat it.

¹ The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.

² Just then, some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”

²² Jesus turned and saw her. “Take courage, daughter,” He said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was cured from that very hour.

⁵ I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced is in you as well.

⁴² Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck,

²² They will mean life to you and adornment to your neck.

⁹ She will put a crown of grace on your head, giving you a head-dress of glory.

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake your mother's teaching. ²¹ bind them upon your heart forever, tie them around your neck.

¹⁰ Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings, your neck with strings of jewels.

⁹ You have stolen (my) heart, my sister bride! You have stolen my heart with one glance from your eyes, with one ornament from your necklaces.

¹⁹ the earrings, the bracelets, the veils,

¹¹ "'I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.'"

⁷ The king cried out to bring in the enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers. He announced to the advisors of Babylon, "Whoever can read this writing and tell me its meaning will be clothed in purple, have a gold chain placed around his neck, and will become the third highest ruler in the kingdom."

¹⁶ However, I've heard that you can provide meaning and interpretation, and that you can solve difficult problems. If you are able to read the writing and report its meaning, you will be clothed in purple, have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will become the third highest ruler in the kingdom."

²⁹ Then Belshazzar gave orders to clothe Daniel in purple, to place a chain of gold around his neck, and to proclaimed him the third highest ruler of the kingdom.

⁹ and I would have the women dress becomingly, with modesty and self-control, not with plaited hair or gold or pearls or costly clothes, ¹⁰ but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.

³ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, ⁴ but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.

⁷ and after these things his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, Lie with me; ⁸ But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not worry about what is in the house, and everything he owns he has put in my hand. ⁹ No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” ¹⁰ She kept asking Joseph day after day. He refused to go to bed with her or be with her. ¹¹ One day he went into the house to do his work. None of the household servants were there. ¹² She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside. ¹³ When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside,

⁸ neither will to him nor hearken to him; your eye neither pity him nor spare him nor cover for him:

¹⁶ When she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, he became tired to death. ¹⁷ So he told her everything, and said to her, No razor has ever come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak like any other man. ¹⁸ When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent for the lords of the Philistines saying, Come up once more, for he has told me everything. Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money with them. ¹⁹ She made him sleep on her knees, and then she called for a man who shaved off the seven braids of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ²⁰ And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he woke up from his sleep and said, "I will go out just like every other time and shake myself free," but he did not know that the LORD had left him. ²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder in the prison.

¹ Blessed is the man who doesn't walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers;

¹⁸ If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and have cast in your lot with adulterers.

²¹ With her fair words she overcame him, forcing him with her smooth lips. ²² He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose. ²³ until an arrow pierces his entrails, like a bird rushing into a snare, but he does not know that it will cost him his life.

²⁰ One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

²⁹ A violent man entices his neighbor, and leads him into the way that is not good.

¹⁹ A gossip reveals secrets. So avoid a man who speaks flattering words.

¹⁸ For such as these are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

¹¹ Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

⁸ He lies in wait near the villages. From ambushes, he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless. ⁹ He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net. ¹⁰ The helpless are crushed. They collapse. They fall under his strength.

¹² They observed me, like a lion eager for prey, and like a young lion lurking in coverts.

⁷ For they have hidden their pit-net for me without cause; without cause they have dug for my soul.

⁶ They conspire and lurk, watching my steps. They are eager to take my life.

⁵ They encourage themselves in evil plans. They talk about laying snares secretly. They say, "Who will see them?" ⁶ They plot injustice, saying, We have made a perfect plan! Surely man's mind and heart are cunning.

¹⁶ for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

¹⁸ but these people lie in wait for their own blood. They ambush only themselves.

⁶ The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright delivers them.

¹⁴ a generation whose teeth are like swords, and its jaw teeth like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.

²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men, that lie in wait as fowlers, setting snares and traps to catch men.

¹⁹ But I was like a docile lamb being brought to the slaughter. And I did not know that they had plotted evils against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name may be remembered no more.

¹⁸ Then they said, “Come! Let's devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won't perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let's strike him with the tongue, and let's not give heed to any of his words.” ¹⁹ Do pay close attention to me, O LORD! Listen to what my opponents are saying! ²⁰ Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit to take my life. Remember! I stood before you and spoke good on their behalf in order to turn your wrath away from them.

² The pious has perished from the earth, and the upright is not among mankind. All of them lie in wait for blood; each one hunts his brother with a net.

³ Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas, ⁴ and they plotted to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated Me without reason.’

¹⁵ Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.”

³ as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.

³⁰ "But if the LORD does something totally new, if the ground opens up, swallows them and everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive to their graves; then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt." ³¹ When he finished speaking, the ground under them split, ³² The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all of Korah's men, and all their goods. ³³ They went down alive to their graves with everything that belonged to them. The ground covered them. They disappeared from the assembly.

¹⁰ And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that band died, when the fire devoured the two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign.

⁹ For there is not anything reliable in his mouth; their inner part is destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit.

¹ ([Psalm of David]) O LORD, I call to you. O my rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. If you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit (grave).

²⁵ Do not let them say: Aha, just what we wanted! We have swallowed him up.

¹ Be merciful to me, God, for man wants to swallow me up. All day long, he attacks and oppresses me. ² My enemies trample all day, because many are attacking me proudly.

³ He will send from heaven and save me; he will reproach the one who tramples me. Selah God will send his loyal love and his faithfulness.

³ then they had swallowed us alive when they kindled their wrath against us:

⁷ Answer me quickly, O LORD for my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will become like those who go down to the pit.

³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me. He has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has, like a monster, swallowed me up. He has filled his stomach with my delicacies. He has cast me out.

⁵ The Lord has become as an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces. He has destroyed his strongholds. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation in the daughter of Judah.

¹⁶ All your enemies have opened their mouth wide against you; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it!

² you who despise good and love evil, who tear off the skin of my people, along with the flesh from their bones. ³ Who eat the flesh of my people? They strip their skin and they break their bones; and spread them as for the caldron and as flesh within the caldron.

¹³ Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit; the venom of vipers is on their lips;

² They move boundary stones, steal flocks, and pasture them. ³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge.

¹⁹ Such is the way of all those who seek illicit gain it takes away the lives of those who possess it.

¹³ For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. ¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped.

¹⁶ He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy. Then it was well. "Is that not what it means to know me?" Says the LORD. ¹⁷ But your eyes and your heart are not, Except on your dishonest gain, And on shedding of innocent blood, And on oppression, and on doing of violence."

¹² The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his caves with the kill, and his dens with prey.

⁹ The glory of this latter house shall be greater than that of the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will give peace, says the LORD of Hosts.

¹⁵ And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

⁹ But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

⁹ "The kings of the earth who have committed lewdness with her and have reveled luxuriously, when they see the smoke of her burning, will wail and beat their breasts. ¹⁰ for fear of her torture they will stand far off, crying, 'Woe and alas, thou great city! thou strong city of Babylon! In one brief hour thy doom has come.' ¹¹ And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargoes any more ¹² cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; ¹³ cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and chariots; and slaves and human souls. ¹⁴ The fruit you longed for has gone from you, and all your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered. ¹⁵ The merchants who sold these things and grew their wealth from her will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment. They will weep and mourn, ¹⁶ and say, 'Alas! Alas for the great city that was dressed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and glittered with gold, precious stones, and pearls,

⁴ I do not sit with deceitful people, nor will I go about with hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.

¹⁰¹ I have kept my feet from every evil way, so that I might keep Your Word.

¹⁴ Do not enter into the path of the wicked. Do not walk in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it; do not pass by it; turn from it, and pass on!

²⁷ Do not turn to the right or to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

⁸ Keep far away from her. Do not go near the door of her house.

⁶ Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding."

¹⁰ Thus says the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not restrained their feet, therefore the LORD does not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and punish their sins.

¹⁷ Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.

¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,

⁷ Their feet run to do evil. They hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are evil. Ruin and destruction are on their highways.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict His wrath on us? I am speaking in human terms.

¹¹ who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?

²³ until an arrow pierces his entrails, like a bird rushing into a snare, but he does not know that it will cost him his life.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know, my people do not understand.

⁷ Even the stork in the sky knows its seasons, and the dove, the swallow, and the crane observe the time for migration. But my people don't know the requirements of the LORD.

¹⁰ Then they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. And the king's fury subsided.

¹⁴ But the wicked one travails with evil, he conceives malice and gives birth to lies. ¹⁵ He has dug a hole, and has fallen into the pit which he made. ¹⁶ His trouble comes back on his head, and his violence comes down on his skull.

¹⁶ the LORD is known [by] the judgment he hath executed: the wicked is ensnared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

²³ But you, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

²² The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly. ²³ He will die for lack of discipline, and he goes astray because of his great folly.

¹⁷ "Stolen waters are sweet, and food eaten in secret is delicious." ¹⁸ But he doesn't know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹⁷ A man who is tormented by life blood will be a fugitive until death; no one will support him.

⁴ "I have sinned," he said, "in betraying innocent blood!" "What is that to us?" they answered; "you must see to that." ⁵ So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

¹¹ Joab asked the man who was reporting to him, "What! You saw him? Why didn't you kill him right then and there? I would've given you ten pieces of silver and a warrior's sash!" ¹² The man told Joab: "Even if I felt the weight of twenty pounds of silver in my hand, I would not raise my hand against the king's son. We heard the order the king gave you, Abishai, and Ittai. Protect the young man Absalom for my sake. ¹³ And if I had falsely put him to death and nothing may be kept secret from the king, you would have had nothing to do with me.

²⁰ But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving from his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD lives, I will run after him, and take something from him. ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well? ²² He said, "All is well. My master has sent me, saying, 'Look, even now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothing.'" ²³ Naaman said, Please take two talents. He urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants; and they carried them before him. ²⁴ When he came to the hill, he took them from their hands, and put them away in the house; and he sent the men away, and they went. ²⁵ And he went in and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, Where from, Gehazi? And he said, Your servant did not go here or there. ²⁶ And he said to him, Went not my heart with you, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and olive groves, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants? ²⁷ Therefore the leprosy of Naaman will cling to you and to your descendants forever." He went out from his presence a leper, as white as snow.

³⁹ If I have eaten its yield without payment, and caused the death of its owners;

²⁷ He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.

³ Do not crave his delicacies for it is deceptive food. ⁴ Do not weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth hoarded by its owner to his harm.

¹⁷ But your eyes and your heart are not, Except on your dishonest gain, And on shedding of innocent blood, And on oppression, and on doing of violence." ¹⁸ Therefore the LORD tells us about Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: "They will not cry for him: 'Alas, my brother!' And, 'Alas, sister!' They will not mourn him: 'Alas for the master!' And, "Alas for his splendor!" ¹⁹ He will be buried with the burial of a donkey. He will be dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance. ³ Therefore, thus says the LORD: Look! I am planning disaster against this family from which you will not be able to remove your necks. You will not walk proudly, for it is a time of disaster.

¹⁰ he who builds Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wickedness. ¹¹ Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on the LORD, and say, “Isn’t the LORD among us? No disaster will come on us.” ¹² Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed up like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the temple Mount like a forest high place."

⁹ Woe to him who robs evil booty for his house, to set his nest on high, to be delivered from the hand of evil!

¹⁹ saying, "Give me also this power, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." ²⁰ But Peter replied, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!

³ not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

¹ Come on now, you rich people, cry and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your wealth has rotted and moths have eaten your clothing. ³ Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days. ⁴ Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from long ago their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

¹⁴ They have eyes full of adultery, that never cease from sin; they entice unstable souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! ¹⁵ They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness. ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression by a donkeya beast without speechwho spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness.

¹ Doesn’t wisdom cry out? Doesn’t understanding raise her voice? ² On the top of high places by the way, where the paths meet, she stands. ³ Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entry doors, she cries aloud: ⁴ "To you men, I call. I send my voice to the sons of mankind. ⁵ You simple, understand prudence! You fools, be of an understanding heart!

³ She has sent out her maidens. She cries from the highest places of the city:

⁵⁴ Coming to His hometown, He taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. “Where did this man get such wisdom and miraculous powers?” they asked.

⁴⁹ Because of this, the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and others they will persecute.’

³⁷ Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

²⁴ but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

³⁰ It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

³ in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

²⁷ What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.

² Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat and sat down, while all the people stood on the shore.

²⁰ “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

²⁰ “Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life.”

³ Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, "This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.

²⁸ Then the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you people refuse to keep my commandments and my instructions?

²⁷ How long doth this wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel.

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

⁸ Consider, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you be wise?

⁴ for giving prudence to the naïve, knowledge and discretion to the young.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

²⁹ Since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD,

³⁴ Surely He mocks the mockers, but He gives grace to the humble.

¹² And you say, How I have hated discipline, And my heart has spurned correction!"

⁹ How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep?

⁷ And I saw among the simple, I observed among the youth, a young man lacking ⌊sense⌋,

¹⁶ Whoever is gullible, turn in here! - and to whoever lacks heart, she says,

⁶ A mocker seeks wisdom and finds it not, Yet knowledge comes easily to one of understanding."

¹² A scorner loveth not to be reproved: he will not go unto the wise

²⁹ Penalties are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the back of fools.

¹¹ When the mocker is punished, the simple gains wisdom. When the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.

¹³ But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

¹⁷ “O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.”

³⁷ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

⁴² and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.

²⁰ Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

³ First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say Come. And let him who hears, say Come. And he who is thirsty, let him come. And whosoever will, let him take of the living water freely.

¹ A praise psalm by David. I will exalt you, my God, the King. I will praise your name forever and ever.

²⁵ because you neglected all my advice and did not want my correction,

³⁰ Consented not to my counsel, disdained all my rebuke,

²³ For instruction is a lamp, and law is a light, And the reproofs of discipline are the way to life,

¹⁷ He who heeds instruction is in the way of life, but he who refuses reproof is going astray.

¹ He that is stiff necked and will not be reformed, shall suddenly be destroyed without any help.

¹⁵ until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field and the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest.

⁸ Drop down from above, O heavens; and let the clouds pour down righteousness. Let the earth open and let salvation bear fruit; and let righteousness sprout together. I, the LORD have created it.

¹ Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the water. You, who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. ² Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. ³ Give ear and come to me; listen to me, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.

⁶ Seek the LORD while he may be found. Call on him while he is near. ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

¹⁴ "Return, unfaithful people," declares the LORD, "for I am your husband. I'll take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I'll bring you to Zion.

²⁷ Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive. ²⁸ Because he considers and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he will surely live. He will not die. ²⁹ But the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not fair. Are My ways not fair, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not fair? ³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Sovereign LORD. Return and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin.

¹¹ Say to them: '"As I am alive!" Declares the Sovereign LORD. "I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked. Only that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back! Turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?"'

¹ "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have fallen due to your own iniquity.

²⁸ “It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.

¹⁰ I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they will look to Me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for his firstborn.

¹³ If ye then, though evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!

³⁶ What does he mean when he said, 'You will seek me and you will not find me,' and, 'Where I am you cannot come'?" ³⁷ Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

³⁶ Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!” ³⁷ When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” ³⁸ Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent therefore, and turn again, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

²⁰ but to those in Damascus first, and in Jerusalem and all the region of Judea and to the Gentiles, I proclaimed that they should repent and turn to God, doing deeds worthy of repentance.

¹⁶ So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of My mouth! ¹⁷ You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. ¹⁸ I advise you to buy of me gold that has been refined in the fire, so that you may become rich, and white clothes to put on, to hide your shameful nakedness, and salve to put on your eyes, to make you see. ¹⁹ Those I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest and repent.

²⁰ In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.

² Wherefore, When I came in, was there no one? When I called, was there none to answer? Is mine own hand, really shortened, that it cannot redeem? Or is there not, in me, strength to deliver? Lo! by my rebuke, I dry up the sea I make rivers a desert, Their fish Stinketh, for want of water, Yea dieth, for thirst:

¹² "I will destine you for the sword, and you will all bend down for the slaughter! I called but you did not answer. I spoke but you did not listen. You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me."

⁴ "Therefore I will choose harsh treatment for them and bring on them what they fear. I called, but no one answered. I spoke, but they did not listen. They did what I consider evil. They chose what I do not like."

¹³ Now, because you have done all these things," declares the LORD, "I spoke to you over and over again, but you didn't listen. I called to you, but you didn't answer.

¹⁸ Therefore will I also deal with them in anger; My eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

¹¹ But they refused to pay attention, turned their backs, and stopped listening. ¹² "They made their hearts hard like flint and would not listen to the law, and the words that the LORD Almighty sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Great anger came from the LORD Almighty!"

⁵ But they paid no attention and went off, one to his estate, another to his business, ⁶ The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.

³⁷ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! ³⁸ Look, your house is left to you desolate.

³⁰ as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”

²¹ But concerning Israel he says: “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

²⁵ See to it that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? ²⁶ At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also heaven."

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

¹¹ But my people would not listen to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

¹¹ because they rebelled against the words of God, and despised the counsel of the Most High;

³⁰ But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.

¹⁴ "Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them save you in your time of trouble."

⁴ The One who dwells in heaven laughs. the LORD scoffs at them.

¹³ the Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming.

¹⁵ Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

²⁴ What the wicked fear, will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

²⁴ For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet!’”

⁹ Before your pots can feel the heat of a thornbush, whether green or dry, he will sweep it away.

²² Let their table before them become a snare, may it become a retribution and a trap. ²³ Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see. Let their backs be continually bent. ²⁴ Pour out Your wrath on them; and let the glow of Your anger overtake them. ²⁵ Let their palace be desolate, and let no one dwell in their tents. ²⁶ For they persecute those whom you have struck, and they brag about the pain of those you have wounded. ²⁷ Charge them with crime upon crime. Do not let them come into your righteousness. ²⁸ Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.

²⁵ Do not be afraid of sudden disaster, or the devastation that comes to the wicked. ²⁶ for the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.

²⁴ What the wicked fear, will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted. ²⁵ When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever.

¹³ The nations roar like the roar of many waters, but he will rebuke him, and he will flee far away. And they are chased like chaff of the mountains before the wind and like tumbleweed before the storm.

³ the LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and doth not at all clear [the guilty]: the LORD, -- his way is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

²³ How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers. For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people. ²⁴ They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. ²⁵ “There will be signs in sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, at the roaring and tossing of the sea; ²⁶ Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

³⁴ But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and the worries of life—and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a snare. ³⁵ For it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

⁹ There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek;

³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

¹⁵ Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man, hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. ¹⁶ They told the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, ¹⁷ for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"

³ And the LORD said, My Spirit shall not always plead with Man; for he indeed is flesh; but his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.

¹⁸ And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye have chosen; and the LORD will not answer you in that day.

⁹ "Does God listen to his cry when distress comes upon him?

¹² There they cry, and he answereth not, because of the pride of evil men.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save; even to the LORD, but he did not answer them.

³⁴ When he slew them, they sought him, and turned them early, and inquired after God. ³⁵ They remembered that God was their rock, that the Most High was their defender. ³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.

¹⁵ "When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen because your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ "'Therefore the LORD says: 'I am going to bring a disaster on them that they cannot escape. Although they will cry out to me, I will not listen to them.

¹² Although they fast, I won't listen to their cry, and although they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I won't accept them. Instead, I'll put an end to them with the sword, with famine, and with a plague."

¹⁵ I will return again to my place until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face; in their distress they will search me.

⁴ "They will cry to the LORD but he will not answer them. In fact, he will hide his face from them at that time because they have done evil things."

¹³ "'I cried, and they would not listen. Now they will cry, and I will not listen,' said the LORD Almighty!

²² Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ ²³ Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Get away from me, you evildoers!'"

¹⁰ But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. ¹¹ Afterwards the other bridesmaids came. 'Sir, Sir,' they said, 'open the door to us!' ¹² But he replied, 'I tell you with certainty, I don't know you!'

²⁵ After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ ²⁶ Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.' ²⁷ But he will tell you, 'I don't know where you come from. Get away from me, all you evildoers!' ²⁸ “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you yourselves being thrown out.

³ And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures.

¹⁴ "They say to God: 'Leave us alone! We do not desire to know your ways.' ¹⁵ "Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what do we gain if we pray to him?

¹⁶ But to the wicked God says, "What right have you to recite my statutes and mention my covenant with your mouth, ¹⁷ You hate instruction and toss my words behind you.

¹¹ When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For they have no understanding (discernment). Their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

⁹ These people are rebellious and deceitful children. They refuse to listen to the LORD's Law. ¹⁰ That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions; ¹¹ Remove from the way, turn aside from the path, cause to cease from before us the Holy One of Israel. ¹² Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel: Because you have rejected this word, and have trusted in oppression and tumult, and have leaned upon it:

⁴² but only one thing is needed. And Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

⁵¹ You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did. ⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers— ⁵³ you who have received the law through ranks of angels, but have not kept it. ⁵⁴ When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.

²⁵ He chose to share the bad treatment with the people of God, rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.

¹¹¹ I inherited thy testimonies forever: for they are the joy of my heart.

¹⁷³ Let your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.

⁹ The wise men will be put to shame. They'll be dismayed and taken captive. Look, they have rejected the word of the LORD! So what kind of wisdom do they have?

¹⁸ And they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of land, and I must go and see it: Please excuse me. ¹⁹ Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I am on my way to try them. Please excuse me.' ²⁰ Still another said, 'I recently got married, so I can't come.'

⁸ Just as I have seen, those who plow lawlessness And those who sow misery are harvesting it.

¹⁴ The faithless one will be repaid for his ways, but a good man will be rewarded for his.

⁸ He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

¹⁰ Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. ¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

¹⁹ Your wickedness will chastise you, and your apostasies will reprove you. Therefore know and see that it is evil and bitter, your forsaking of the LORD, your God, and fear of me is not in you," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

¹⁹ "Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing disaster on this people as the fruit of their plans. This is because they have not listened to my words, and have rejected my law.

⁷ Do not be deceived. God is not mocked! A man will harvest what he sows. ⁸ The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, thick and sated. And he abandoned God who made him, and fell away from the Rock of his salvation. ¹⁶ They provoked him to jealousy over foreigners and to anger over detestable things. ¹⁷ They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods that they did not know, to new gods that came up of late, which your fathers did not dread. ¹⁸ "You ignored the rock that fathered you and forgot the God who gave you life. ¹⁹ The LORD saw it and became jealous, provoked by his sons and daughters. ²⁰ He said, “I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness. ²¹ They made me jealous with not God; They irritated me with their vanities: And I will make them jealous with not a people; With a foolish nation will I irritate them. ²² For a fire has been kindled in My anger, and it burns to the lowest Sheol, and consumes the earth and its produce; and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains. ²³ I will heap evils upon them, and will spend my arrows among them. ²⁴ While they are wasting by famine, and voracious birds; The burning carbuncle also shall be incurable; I will send against them the teeth of wild beasts, With the venom of serpents, trailing on the ground. ²⁵ Outside the sword will bereave, and in the rooms, terror on both young man and virgin, the nursing infant with the gray-haired man. ²⁶ I said: "I will scatter them, erasing their memory from the human race, ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should misunderstand, and lest they should say, Our hand has triumphed, and the LORD has not done all this. ²⁸ For they are a nation without wisdom; there is no sense in them. ²⁹ If only they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern for themselves their end. ³⁰ How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had delivered them up? ³¹ For their rock isn't like our Rock, as even our enemies admit. ³² For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, and from the terraces of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison; ⌊their clusters are bitter⌋. ³³ Their wine is the venom of serpents, a poisonous cobra. ³⁴ Do I not have this laid up in store, sealed up in my treasuries? ³⁵ Vengeance is mine, I will repay, at the time when their foot slides; for the day of their calamity is near, and the things to come hasten upon them." ³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people, and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none left, slave or free. ³⁷ He will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge; ³⁸ which ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you! Let them be your protection. ³⁹ See, now, that I, even I am he, and there is not a god besides me; I put to death and I give life; I wound and I heal; there is not one who delivers from my hand! ⁴⁰ For I lift up My hand to heaven and say, as surely as I live forever, ⁴¹ if I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me. ⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh, of the blood of the slain and of the captivity, of the bare head of the enemies. ⁴³ Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants. He will take vengeance on his adversaries, and will make atonement for his land and for his people. ⁴⁴ Then Moses came, along with Joshua son of Nun, and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people.

²² Let their table before them become a snare, may it become a retribution and a trap.

⁶ An animal-like man does not know; a fool does not understand this. ⁷ though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

³⁶ "But he who sins against me wrongs himself. All who hate me love death."

¹¹ Moab has been at ease from his youth. He has been undisturbed like wine on its dregs and not poured from vessel to vessel. He has not gone into exile. Therefore, his flavor has remained, and his aroma has not changed. ¹² Therefore, behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will send to him those who pour off and they will pour him off. And they will empty his vessels and smash their jugs.

¹⁶ Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance. ¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?' ²¹ This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God.”

¹⁹ "There was once a rich man, who used to dress in purple and fine linen, and to live in luxury every day. ²⁰ Near his gateway there had been laid a beggar named Lazarus, who was covered with sores, ²¹ and longing to be fed from what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and the angels carried him into AbrahamÆs bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. ²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side. ²⁴ So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’ ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

³⁶ Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”

³⁸ But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul is not well pleased with him." ³⁹ But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and keep their souls.

⁸ If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.

²⁵ See to it that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?

⁵ You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter.

¹² Who is the man that fears the Lord? He shall instruct him in the way which he has chosen. ¹³ His soul shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the land.

¹³ O that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!

⁷ He will not be afraid of evil news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ His heart is secure, he has no fears; in the end he will look in triumph on his adversaries.

²¹ My son, keep good sense, and do not let wise purpose go from your eyes. ²² They will mean life to you and adornment to your neck. ²³ Then you will walk in your way securely and your foot will not stumble. ²⁴ When you sit down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be pleasant.

³² Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways. ³³ Listen to instruction and be wise. Don't ignore it. ³⁴ Blessed is the person who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorways ³⁵ For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor from the LORD.

¹¹ For because of me you will live a long life, and years will be added to your life.

²⁶ In the fear of the LORD, there is confidence of strength, and for his children, there will be refuge.

³ You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you: because he trusts in you.

¹⁸ Oh that you had paid attention to My commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

³ Give ear and come to me; listen to me, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.

⁵ While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”

⁹ When you hear of wars and rebellions, do not be alarmed. These things must happen first, but the end is not imminent.”

¹⁹ By your endurance you will gain your lives.

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me; ²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one shall snatch them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ³⁶ As it is written: “For Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” ³⁷ No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. ³⁸ For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, ³⁹ neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁵ who through faith are protected by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
