Judges 12:1-6
1 The men of Ephraim were ready for battle. They crossed the Jordan River to Zaphon and said to Jephthah: "Why did you cross the border to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We are going to burn the house down over your head!"
2 Jephthah said to them, I and my people were at great strife with the Ammonites and when I called you, you didn't save me out of their hand.
3 When I saw that you wouldn't be delivering me, I took my own life in my hands, crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my control. So why have you come here today to fight me?"
4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim because they said, You Gileadites are renegades of Ephraim from Ephraim and Manasseh.
5 Then Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan from Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When he said, "No,"
6 they would tell him to say "Shibboleth." But he would say "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they would kill him at the Jordan River crossing. Forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites were killed.

Acts 15:2-21
2 So Paul and Barnabas engaged these men in sharp debate. The two of them were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.
3 The church saw them off upon their journey, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria they told of the conversion of the heathen, and caused great rejoicing among all the brothers.
4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them.
5 But some believers from the party of the Pharisees stood up and declared, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the Law of Moses.”
6 The apostles and elders met to consider the matter;
7 After much discussion, Peter got up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days, God made a choice among you that the Gentiles would hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.
8 "God knows their hearts and showed that he accepted them by giving them Holy Spirit just as he did to us.
9 He made no distinction between us and them, for he cleansed their hearts by faith.
10 Now then, why do you test God by placing on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?
11 On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace of the Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”
12 The whole assembly fell silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul describing the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.
13 When they finished, James responded as follows: "Brothers, listen to me.
14 Simeon has related how God first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for his name.
15 The words of the prophets are in accord with this, as it is written:
16 ‘After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it,
17 so that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear My name, says the Lord who does these things

19 It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not cause trouble for the Gentiles who are turning to God.

21 For Moses has been proclaimed in every city from ancient times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”
