²² A wise man attacks the city of the mighty, and pulls down the stronghold in which they trust.

⁶ The king and his men went to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived in that region. The Jebusites told David: "You will never get in here. Even the blind and the lame could turn you away. In other words he could not enter there." ⁷ David captured the fortress of Zion, the city of David. ⁸ At that time, David had said, "Whoever intends to attack the Jebusites will have to climb up the water shaft to attack the lame and blind, who hate David." Therefore they say, "The blind and lame shall never come into the house." ⁹ David occupied the fortress, naming it the City of David. He built up the surroundings from the terrace ramparts inward.

¹⁶ Then a wise woman cried out in the city, Hear, hear, I pray you, tell Joab to come here, that I may speak with him. ¹⁷ Joab came over and the woman asked him, "Are you Joab?" "I am," he answered. So she told him, "Listen to what your servant has to say!" "I'm listening," he replied. ¹⁸ Then spake she, saying,—They, used to speak, in former times, saying, Enquire, in Abel! And, so, they ended it. ¹⁹ I am among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the LORD's inheritance?” ²⁰ Joab answered, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. ²¹ The matter is not so. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David. Deliver him only, and I will depart from the city." The woman said to Joab, "Look, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall." ²² Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

¹³ I also observed this example of wisdom on earth, and it seemed important to me: ¹⁴ There was a small city with only a few mortals in it, And a great king came against it and surrounded it, And he built great siege works against it." ¹⁵ but there was found therein, a man, poor [but] wise, and, he, delivered the city by his wisdom,—yet, no one, remembered that poor man. ¹⁶ And I said, Wisdom is better than strength; but the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The softly spoken words of the wise are to be heard rather than the shouts of a ruler of fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.
