¹⁶ Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against the evildoers?

²⁶ And Moses stood at the entrance of the camp, and he said, "Whoever is for the LORD, to me." And all the sons of Levi were gathered to him. ²⁷ He said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and each of you kill his brother and friend and neighbor.'" ²⁸ The Levites did just as Moses told them, and about 3,000 people died that day. ²⁹ Then Moses said, "Fill your hands unto the LORD this day, every man upon his son and upon his brother: to bring upon you a blessing this day."

³⁵ When the ark went forward, Moses said, “Rise up, the LORD, and let your enemies be scattered! Let those who hate you flee before you!”

⁶ One of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman to his brothers. He did this right in front of Moses and the entire congregation of Israel while they were crying at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ⁷ Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, saw this. He left the assembly and grabbed a spear in his hand. ⁸ and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. So the plague of the sons of Israel was stayed. ⁹ - and they who die in the plague, twenty-four thousand. ¹⁰ And the Lord said to Moses: ¹¹ Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the sons of Israel while he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy. ¹² `Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace, ¹³ and it will be for him and his offspring after him a covenant of an eternal priesthood because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.'"

²³ Curse Meroz, said the angel of the LORD. Curse bitterly its inhabitants, because they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.

³⁹ And when all the people saw it, they fell facedown and said, "The LORD, he is God. The LORD, he is God." ⁴⁰ Then Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; don't let any man of them escape!" So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the wadi of Kishon and killed them there.

³² Jehu looked up toward the window and called out, "Who is on my side? Who?" When two or three eunuchs looked out at him,

¹⁵ And he left there and found Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him. And he greeted him and said to him, Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it is, give your hand. And he gave his hand. And he took him up to him into the chariot.

⁷ I thought over this in my heart, and then I quarreled with the nobles and the prefects. I said to them, "You yourselves are taking interest from your own brother!" So I called the great assembly against them,

¹³ Arise, O LORD, confront him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, by your sword:

² Deliver me from evildoers. Save me from the bloodthirsty men.

¹⁶ He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor. Therefore his own arm brought salvation to him; and his righteousness sustained him.

⁵ I looked, and there was no one to help; and I wondered that there was no one to uphold. Therefore my own arm brought salvation to me. My own wrath upheld me.

¹ "Roam about through the streets of Jerusalem, and look please, and take note, and search at its public squares, if you can find a person who does justice, who seeks honesty, so that I may forgive it.

¹⁶ Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets: "This man is not worthy of death; for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God." ¹⁷ Some of the elders of the land got up and said to all the assembled people, ¹⁸ Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the temple mount as the high places of a forest. ¹⁹ "Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone in Judah kill him? Didn't he fear the LORD and seek the LORD's favor, and so the LORD changed his mind about the disaster that he had spoken to them about. We're bringing great disaster on ourselves.

³⁰ '"I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.

³⁰ "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier, and who himself was one of them, asked, ⁵¹ "Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to find out what he has done?"

⁸ We therefore ought to welcome such, so that we may work together for the Truth.
