¹ All who are under the yoke of slavery must esteem their masters to be deserving the highest respect, so that the name of God and our teaching may not be abused.

⁹ If not, why did you go out there? To see a prophet?

³⁰ for the yoke I offer is easy to wear, and the load I ask is light to bear

¹ Now He said to His disciples: "It is inevitable that snares to evil will come, but a curse be on the man through whom they come!

⁷ After the angel who had spoken to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his household servants, and a religious soldier who was one of his devoted attendants,

²² They answered, "Cornelius, a colonel in the army, an upright man and one who reveres God, and a man of high reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to listen to a message you would bring."

¹⁰ Then why do you now try to test God by putting on these disciples' necks a yoke which neither our forefathers nor we could bear?

²⁴ For, as the Scripture says, the name of God is abused among the heathen because of you.

²¹ Were you called while a slave? Stop letting that annoy you. Yet, if you can win your freedom, take advantage of such an opportunity. ²² For the slave who has been called to union with the Lord is the Lord's freedman; in the same way the freeman who has been called is a slave of Christ.

³² Stop being stumbling blocks to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,

¹ This is the freedom with which Christ has made us free. So keep on standing in it, and stop letting your necks be fastened in the yoke of slavery again.

⁵ You slaves must practice obedience to your earthly masters, with reverence and awe, with sincerity of heart, as you would obey Christ, ⁶ not serving them as though they were watching you, but as true slaves of Christ, trying to carry out the will of God. ⁷ Heartily and cheerfully keep on working as slaves, as though it were for the Lord and not for men, ⁸ for you know that everyone, slave or free, will get his reward from the Lord for anything good he has done.

²² Slaves, practice obedience to your earthly masters in everything, not as though they were watching you and as though you were merely pleasing men, but with sincerity of heart, because you fear the Lord. ²³ Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as work for the Lord and not for men, ²⁴ for you know that it is from the Lord that you are going to get your pay in the form of an inheritance; so keep on serving Christ the Lord. ²⁵ For the man who wrongs another will be paid back the wrong he has done; and there are no exceptions.

¹⁴ So I would have the younger women marry, have children, and keep house, so as not to give our opponents any occasion for slander.

⁵ to be serious, pure, home keepers, kind, and subordinate to their husbands, so as not to cause God's message to suffer reproach.

⁸ let your message be wholesome and unobjectionable, so that our opponent may be put to shame at having nothing evil to say about us. ⁹ Continue urging slaves to practice perfect submission to their masters and to give them perfect satisfaction, ¹⁰ to stop resisting them and stealing from them, but to show such perfect fidelity as to adorn, in everything they do, the teaching of God our Saviour.

¹² Keep on living upright lives among the heathen, so that, when they slander you as evildoers, by what they see of your good deeds they may come to praise God on the judgment day.

¹⁷ Show honor to everyone. Practice love for the brotherhood; practice reverence to God and honor to the Emperor. ¹⁸ You house-servants must be submissive to your masters and show them perfect respect, not only to those who are kind and fair but also to those who are cruel. ¹⁹ For it is pleasing in the sight of God for one to bear his sorrows though suffering innocently. ²⁰ For what credit is it to bear it patiently, if you do wrong and are beaten for it? But if you do right and patiently suffer for it, it is pleasing in the sight of God.

¹⁶ and keep your conscience clear, so that those who bitterly abuse your excellent conduct as Christians may be ashamed of slandering you.
