⁹ To some people who were confident that they themselves were upright, but who scorned everybody else, He told the following story:

³⁹ So when the Pharisee who invited Him saw it, he said to himself, "If He were really a prophet, He would know who and of what character the woman is who is clinging to Him -- that she is a social outcast."

²⁹ But he, as he wished to justify his question, said, "But who is my neighbor?"

² And so the Pharisees and scribes continually grumbled, and said, "This fellow is welcoming notorious sinners, and even eating with them."

²⁹ But he answered his father, 'See! I have served you all these years and have never disobeyed a command of yours, but you have never given me even a kid, so that I could celebrate with my friends. ³⁰ But when this son of yours arrives, who has eaten up your property with immoral women, you have killed for him the fattening calf.'

¹⁵ Then He said to them, "You are the men who exhibit your uprightness before the public, but God knows your hearts. For what stands high in the sight of men is detestable in the sight of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and said this self-centered prayer, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of men, robbers, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector.

⁷ And when they all saw it, they began to grumble and say, "He has gone in to lodge with a notorious sinner!"

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered, "You are not swept off your feet too, are you? ⁴⁸ None of the authorities or of the Pharisees have believed in Him, have they? ⁴⁹ But this mob, which knows nothing about the law, is bound to be accursed!"

⁴⁸ Then the Jews answered Him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are under the power of a demon?"

²⁸ Then they jeered him, and said, "You are a disciple of His yourself, but we are disciples of Moses.

³⁴ Then they retorted, "You were born in total depravity, and yet you are trying to teach us!" And so they turned him out of the synagogue.

²¹ Then He said to me, 'Go, because I am to send you out and far away among the heathen.'"

⁹ I was once alive when I had no connection with the law, but when the command came, sin revived, and then I died;

³¹ while Israel, though ever in pursuit of a law that would bring right standing, did not attain to it. ³² Why? Because they did not try through faith but through what they could do. They have stumbled over the stone that causes people to stumble,

³ For they were ignorant of God's way of right standing and were trying to set up one of their own, and so would not surrender to God's way of right standing.

¹⁰ Then why should you criticize your brother? Or, why should you look down on your brother? Surely, we shall all stand before God to be judged,

⁴ though I too might rely on these. If anyone thinks that he can rely on outward privileges, far more might I do so: ⁵ circumcised when I was a week old; a descendant of Israel; a member of the tribe of Benjamin; a Hebrew, a son of Hebrews. Measured by the law, I was a Pharisee; ⁶ by the standard set by zeal, I was a persecutor of the church, and measured by the uprightness reached by keeping the law, I was faultless.
