John 7:29-17:26

BIB^{(i) 29} ἐγὼ (But I) οἶδα (know) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him) εἰμι (I am), κἀκεῖνός (and He) με (Me) ἀπέστειλεν (sent).” ³⁰ Ἐζήτουν (They were seeking) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) πιάσαι (to take), καὶ (but) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐπέβαλεν (laid) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (Him) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ὅτι (because) οὔπω (not yet) ἐληλύθει (had come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³¹ Ἐκ (Out of) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) δὲ (now) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ὁ (The) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὅταν (When) ἔλθῃ (He comes), μὴ (not) πλείονα (more) σημεῖα (signs) ποιήσει (will He do) ὧν (than) οὗτος (this man) ἐποίησεν (has done)?” ³² Ἤκουσαν (Heard) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) γογγύζοντος (murmuring) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him) ταῦτα (these things), καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) ὑπηρέτας (officers), ἵνα (that) πιάσωσιν (they might seize) αὐτόν (Him). ³³ εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) χρόνον (time) μικρὸν (a little) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) ὑπάγω (I go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me). ³⁴ ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me) καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσετέ (will find) [με] (Me); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).” ³⁵ Εἶπον (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Ποῦ (Where) οὗτος (He) μέλλει (is about) πορεύεσθαι (to go) ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσομεν (will find) αὐτόν (Him)? μὴ (Not) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) Διασπορὰν (Dispersion) τῶν (among the) Ἑλλήνων (Greeks) μέλλει (is He about) πορεύεσθαι (to go) καὶ (and) διδάσκειν (to teach) τοὺς (the) Ἕλληνας (Greeks)? ³⁶ τίς (What) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) οὗτος (this) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (He said), ‘Ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσετέ (will find) [με] (Me),’ καὶ (and) ‘Ὅπου (Where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come)’?” ³⁷ Ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day), τῇ (the) μεγάλῃ (great day) τῆς (of the) ἑορτῆς (feast), εἱστήκει (stood) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔκραξεν (cried out), λέγων (saying), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) διψᾷ (thirsts), ἐρχέσθω (let him come) πρός (to) με (Me) καὶ (and) πινέτω (drink). ³⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture): ‘Ποταμοὶ (Rivers) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) κοιλίας (belly) αὐτοῦ (of him) ῥεύσουσιν (will flow) ὕδατος (of water) ζῶντος (living).’” ³⁹ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) εἶπεν (He said) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), οὗ (whom) ἔμελλον (were about) λαμβάνειν (to receive) οἱ (those) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); οὔπω (not yet given) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit), ὅτι (because) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐδέπω (not yet) ἐδοξάσθη (was glorified). ⁴⁰ Ἐκ (Some of) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) οὖν (therefore), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τῶν (the) λόγων (words) τούτων (these), ἔλεγον (were saying) “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὁ (the) προφήτης (Prophet).” ⁴¹ Ἄλλοι (Others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ).” Οἱ (Others) δὲ (however) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Μὴ (Not) γὰρ (indeed) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἔρχεται (comes)? ⁴² οὐχ (Not) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) εἶπεν (has said) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σπέρματος (seed) Δαυὶδ (of David) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθλεὲμ (Bethlehem), τῆς (the) κώμης (village) ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) Δαυὶδ (David), ἔρχεται (comes) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)?” ⁴³ Σχίσμα (A division) οὖν (therefore) ἐγένετο (occurred) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) δι’ (because of) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴⁴ τινὲς (Some) δὲ (now) ἤθελον (desired) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) πιάσαι (to seize) αὐτόν (Him), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐπέβαλεν (laid) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands). ⁴⁵ Ἦλθον (Came) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees), καὶ (and) εἶπον (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐκεῖνοι (that), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὐκ (not) ἠγάγετε (did you bring) αὐτόν (Him)?” ⁴⁶ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) οὕτως (like this) ἄνθρωπος (a man), 〈ὡς (as) οὗτος (this) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος〉 (man).” ⁴⁷ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (them) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πεπλάνησθε (have been deceived)? ⁴⁸ μή (Not) τις (any) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (Him), ἢ (or) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees)? ⁴⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) οὗτος (this), ὁ (-) μὴ (not) γινώσκων (knowing) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ἐπάρατοί (accursed) εἰσιν (are).” ⁵⁰ Λέγει (Says) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ὁ (the one) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), [τὸ] (the) πρότερον (former) εἷς (one) ὢν (being) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ⁵¹ “Μὴ (Not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἡμῶν (of us) κρίνει (does judge) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (it has heard) πρῶτον (first) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) καὶ (and) γνῷ (known) τί (what) ποιεῖ (he does)?” ⁵² Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) εἶ (are)? ἐραύνησον (Search) καὶ (and) ἴδε (see) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) προφήτης (a prophet) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρεται (is raised).” ⁵³ Καὶ (And) ἐπορεύθησαν* (went) ἕκαστος (each) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (home) αὐτοῦ (of him). ^{8 1} Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (however) ἐπορεύθη (went) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) ἐλαιῶν (of Olives). ² Ὄρθρου (Early in the morning) δὲ (then) πάλιν (again) παρεγένετο (He came) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple), καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἤρχετο (were coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him). καὶ (And) καθίσας (having sat down), ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτούς (them). ³ ἄγουσιν* (Bring) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) 〈πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν〉 (Him) γυναῖκα (a woman) ἐπὶ* (in) μοιχείᾳ (adultery) κατειλημμένην (having been caught), καὶ (and) στήσαντες (having set) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst), ⁴ λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), αὕτη (this) ἡ (-) γυνὴ (woman) κατείληπται* (was caught) ἐπ’* (in) αυτοφώρῳ* (the very act), μοιχευομένη (committing adultery). ⁵ ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law), Μωϋσῆς* (Moses) ἡμῖν (us) ἐνετείλατο (commanded) τὰς (-) τοιαύτας (such) λιθάζειν* (to be stoned). σὺ (You) οὖν (therefore), τί (what) λέγεις (say You)?” ⁶ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἔλεγον (they were saying), πειράζοντες (testing) αὐτόν (Him) ἵνα (so that) ἔχωσιν* (they might have grounds) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him). ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), κάτω (down) κύψας (having stooped), τῷ (with) δακτύλῳ (His finger) κατέγραφεν* (began writing) εἰς (on) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground). ⁷ Ὡς (As) δὲ (however) ἐπέμενον (they continued) ἐρωτῶντες (asking) αὐτόν (Him), [ἀνέκυψεν (having lifted Himself up) καὶ (also), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς] (to them), “Ὁ (The one) ἀναμάρτητος (sinless) ὑμῶν (among you), πρῶτος (the first) 〈τὸν〉 (-) λίθον (stone) «ἐπ’ (at) αὐτῇ (her) βαλέτω» (let him cast).” ⁸ καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) κάτω¦κύψας (having stooped down), ἔγραφεν (He continued to write) εἰς (on) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground). ⁹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἐξήρχοντο (they began to go away) εἷς (one) καθ‿ (by) εἷς (one) ἀρξάμενοι (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elder ones) 〈ἕως (until) τῶν (the) ἐσχάτων〉 (last), καὶ (and) κατελείφθη (He was left) μόνος (alone), 〈ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς〉 (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) οὖσα* (being). ¹⁰ ἀνακύψας (Having lifted up) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), 〈Ἡ〉 (-) “Γύναι* (Woman), ποῦ (where) εἰσιν (are) 〈ἐκεῖνοι (they) οἱ (who) κατήγοροί (accuse) σου〉 (you)? οὐδείς (No one) σε (you) κατέκρινεν (has condemned)?” ¹¹ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Οὐδείς (No one), κύριε (Sir).” Εἶπεν* (Said) δὲ (then) 〈αὐτῇ〉 (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγώ (I) σε (you) κατακρίνω (do condemn); πορεύου (go), καὶ (and) [ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) νῦν] (now on) μηκέτι (no more) ἁμάρτανε (sin).” ¹² Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world); ὁ (the one) ἀκολουθῶν (following) ἐμοὶ* (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) περιπατήσῃ (shall walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἕξει (will have) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).” ¹³ Εἶπον (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), “Σὺ (You) περὶ (concerning) σεαυτοῦ (Yourself) μαρτυρεῖς (are bearing witness); ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) σου (of You) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἀληθής (true).” ¹⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Κἂν (Even if) ἐγὼ (I) μαρτυρῶ (am bearing witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself), ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) μου (of Me), ὅτι (because) οἶδα (I know) πόθεν (from where) ἦλθον (I came) καὶ (and) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγω (I am going). ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know) πόθεν (from where) ἔρχομαι (I come) ἢ (or) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγω (I am going). ¹⁵ Ὑμεῖς (You) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) κρίνετε (judge); ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κρίνω (am judging) οὐδένα (no one). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) κρίνω (judge) δὲ (however) ἐγώ (I), ἡ (-) κρίσις (judgment) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) ἀληθινή (true) ἐστιν (is), ὅτι (because) μόνος (alone) οὐκ (not) εἰμί (I am), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me) ‹πατήρ› (Father). ¹⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) δὲ (also) τῷ (-) ὑμετέρῳ (of you) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (that) δύο (of two) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is). ¹⁸ ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the One) μαρτυρῶν (bearing witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself), καὶ (and) μαρτυρεῖ (bears witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me) ὁ (the) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me) Πατήρ (Father).” ¹⁹ Ἔλεγον (They were saying) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ποῦ (Where) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) σου (of You)?” Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὔτε (Neither) ἐμὲ (Me) οἴδατε (you know), οὔτε (nor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me). εἰ (If) ἐμὲ (Me) ᾔδειτε (you had known), καὶ (also) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me) ἂν (-) ᾔδειτε (you would have known).” ²⁰ Ταῦτα (These) τὰ (-) ῥήματα (words) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) γαζοφυλακίῳ (treasury), διδάσκων (teaching) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple); καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐπίασεν (seized) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (for) οὔπω (not yet) ἐληλύθει (had come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ²¹ Εἶπεν (He said) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (am going away) καὶ (and) ζητήσετέ (you will seek) με (Me), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἁμαρτίᾳ (sin) ὑμῶν (of you), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die); ὅπου (where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).” ²² Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Μήτι (Not) ἀποκτενεῖ (will He kill) ἑαυτὸν (Himself), ὅτι (that) λέγει (He says), ‘Ὅπου (Where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come)’?” ²³ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) κάτω (below) ἐστέ (are); ἐγὼ (I) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) ἄνω (above) εἰμί (am). ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστέ (are), ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this). ²⁴ εἶπον (I said) οὖν (therefore) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you); ἐὰν (if) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (you believe) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you).” ²⁵ Ἔλεγον (They were saying) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) τίς (who) εἶ (are)?” Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Τὴν (From the) ἀρχὴν (beginning) ὅ¦τι (what) καὶ (also) λαλῶ (I am saying) ὑμῖν (to you). ²⁶ πολλὰ (Many things) ἔχω (I have) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) λαλεῖν (to say), καὶ (and) κρίνειν (to judge); ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is); κἀγὼ (and I) ἃ (what) ἤκουσα (I have heard) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (I say) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).” ²⁷ Οὐκ (Not) ἔγνωσαν (they understood) ὅτι (that) τὸν (about the) Πατέρα (Father) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἔλεγεν (He was speaking). ²⁸ εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) [αὐτοῖς] (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὅταν (When) ὑψώσητε (you shall have lifted up) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), τότε (then) γνώσεσθε (you will know) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), καὶ (and) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) ποιῶ (I do) οὐδέν (nothing), ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (as) ἐδίδαξέν (taught) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (I speak). ²⁹ καὶ (And) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me), μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστιν (is); οὐκ (not) ἀφῆκέν (He has left) με (Me) μόνον (alone), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) τὰ (the things) ἀρεστὰ (pleasing) αὐτῷ (to Him) ποιῶ (do) πάντοτε (always).” ³⁰ Ταῦτα (These things) αὐτοῦ (of His) λαλοῦντος (speaking), πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him). ³¹ Ἔλεγεν (Was saying) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πεπιστευκότας (having believed) αὐτῷ (in Him) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), “Ἐὰν (If) ὑμεῖς (you) μείνητε (abide) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῷ (-) ἐμῷ (My), ἀληθῶς (truly) μαθηταί (disciples) μού (of Me) ἐστε (you are). ³² καὶ (And) γνώσεσθε (you will know) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐλευθερώσει (will set free) ὑμᾶς (you).” ³³ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) πρὸς (unto) αὐτόν (Him), “Σπέρμα (Seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham) ἐσμεν (we are), καὶ (and) οὐδενὶ (to no one) δεδουλεύκαμεν (have we been under bondage) πώποτε (ever). πῶς (How) σὺ (You) λέγεις (say) ὅτι (-), ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (of the) ἁμαρτίας (sin). ³⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (Now) δοῦλος (the slave) οὐ (not) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age); ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). ³⁶ ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐλευθερώσῃ (shall set free), ὄντως (indeed) ἐλεύθεροι (free) ἔσεσθε (you will be). ³⁷ Οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) σπέρμα (seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham) ἐστε (you are); ἀλλὰ (but) ζητεῖτέ (you seek) με (Me) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) οὐ (not) χωρεῖ (receives a place) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ³⁸ ἃ (That which) ἐγὼ (I) ἑώρακα (have seen) παρὰ (with) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father), λαλῶ (I speak); καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) οὖν (therefore) ἃ (what) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father), ποιεῖτε (you do).” ³⁹ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ὁ (The) πατὴρ (father) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham) ἐστιν (is).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham) ἐστε (you were), τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham) ἐποιεῖτε* (you would do); ⁴⁰ νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ζητεῖτέ (you seek) με (Me) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), ἄνθρωπον (a man) ὃς (who) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ὑμῖν (to you) λελάληκα (has spoken), ἣν (that) ἤκουσα (I heard) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). τοῦτο (This) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) οὐκ (not) ἐποίησεν (did). ⁴¹ ὑμεῖς (You) ποιεῖτε (are doing) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ὑμῶν (of you).” Εἶπαν (They said) [οὖν] (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἡμεῖς (We) ἐκ (of) πορνείας (sexual immorality) ‹οὐ (not) γεγεννήμεθα› (have been born); ἕνα (one) Πατέρα (Father) ἔχομεν (we have), τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).” ⁴² Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἦν (were), ἠγαπᾶτε (you would have loved) ἂν (-) ἐμέ (Me), ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθον (came forth) καὶ (and) ἥκω (am here); οὐδὲ (not even) γὰρ (for) ἀπ’ (of) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) ἐλήλυθα (have I come), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκεῖνός (He) με (Me) ἀπέστειλεν (sent). ⁴³ Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) τὴν (the) λαλιὰν (speech) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (My) οὐ (not) γινώσκετε (do you understand)? ὅτι (Because) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able) ἀκούειν (to hear) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τὸν (-) ἐμόν (My). ⁴⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστὲ (are), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τοῦ (of) πατρὸς (father) ὑμῶν (of you), θέλετε (you desire) ποιεῖν (to do). ἐκεῖνος (He) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (a murderer) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστηκεν (has stood), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ὅταν (Whenever) λαλῇ (he might speak) τὸ (-) ψεῦδος (falsehood), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) λαλεῖ (he speaks); ὅτι (for) ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστὶν (he is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of it). ⁴⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) ὅτι (because) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) λέγω (speak), οὐ (not) πιστεύετέ (you do believe) μοι (Me)! ⁴⁶ Τίς (Which) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἐλέγχει (convicts) με (me) περὶ (concerning) ἁμαρτίας (sin)? εἰ (If) ἀλήθειαν (the truth) λέγω (I speak), διὰ (because of) τί (why) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) πιστεύετέ (do believe) μοι (Me)? ⁴⁷ ὁ (He who) ὢν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀκούει (hears); διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐκ (not) ἀκούετε (hear), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), οὐκ (not) ἐστέ (you are).” ⁴⁸ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐ (Not) καλῶς (rightly) λέγομεν (say) ἡμεῖς (we) ὅτι (that) Σαμαρίτης (a Samaritan) εἶ (are) σὺ (You), καὶ (and) δαιμόνιον (a demon) ἔχεις (have)?” ⁴⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγὼ (I) δαιμόνιον (a demon) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (have); ἀλλὰ (but) τιμῶ (I honor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀτιμάζετέ (dishonor) με (Me). ⁵⁰ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) οὐ (not) ζητῶ (seek) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) μου (of Me); ἔστιν (there is) ὁ (One) ζητῶν (seeking it) καὶ (and) κρίνων (judging). ⁵¹ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) τὸν (-) ἐμὸν (My) λόγον (word) τηρήσῃ (keeps), θάνατον (death) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) θεωρήσῃ (shall he see), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” ⁵² [Εἶπον (Said) οὖν] (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Νῦν (Now) ἐγνώκαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) δαιμόνιον (a demon) ἔχεις (You have). Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ἀπέθανεν (died), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets), καὶ (and) σὺ (You) λέγεις (say), ‘Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσῃ (keeps), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) γεύσηται (shall he taste) θανάτου (of death), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).’ ⁵³ μὴ (Not) σὺ (You) μείζων (greater than) εἶ (are) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ὅστις (who) ἀπέθανεν (died)? καὶ (And) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets) ἀπέθανον (died)! τίνα (Whom) σεαυτὸν (yourself) ποιεῖς (make You)?” ⁵⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐὰν (If) ἐγὼ (I) δοξάσω (glorify) ἐμαυτόν (Myself), ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) μου (of Me) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (is); ἔστιν (it is) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) δοξάζων (glorifying) με (Me), ὃν (of whom) ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (-), ‘Θεὸς (God) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐστιν (He is).’ ⁵⁵ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐγνώκατε (you have known) αὐτόν (Him), ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) οἶδα (know) αὐτόν (Him). κἂν (And if) εἴπω (I say) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I know) αὐτόν (Him), ἔσομαι (I will be) ὅμοιος (like) ὑμῖν (you), ψεύστης (a liar). ἀλλὰ (But) οἶδα (I know) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τηρῶ (I keep). ⁵⁶ Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἠγαλλιάσατο (rejoiced) ἵνα (in that) ἴδῃ (he should see) τὴν (-) ἡμέραν (day) τὴν (-) ἐμήν (My), καὶ (and) εἶδεν (he saw) καὶ (and) ἐχάρη (rejoiced).” ⁵⁷ Εἶπον* (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Πεντήκοντα (Fifty) ἔτη (years old) οὔπω (not yet) ἔχεις (are You), καὶ (and) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ἑώρακας (You have seen)?” ⁵⁸ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), πρὶν (before) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) γενέσθαι (was), ἐγὼ (I) εἰμί (am).” ⁵⁹ Ἦραν (They took up) οὖν (therefore) λίθους (stones), ἵνα (that) βάλωσιν (they might cast) ἐπ’ (at) αὐτόν (Him); Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (however) ἐκρύβη (hid Himself), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple). ^{9 1} Καὶ (And) παράγων (passing by), εἶδεν (He saw) ἄνθρωπον (a man) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐκ (from) γενετῆς (birth). ² καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λέγοντες (saying), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), τίς (who) ἥμαρτεν (sinned), οὗτος (this man) ἢ (or) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἵνα (that) τυφλὸς (blind) γεννηθῇ (he should be born)?” ³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὔτε (Neither) οὗτος (this man) ἥμαρτεν (sinned), οὔτε (nor) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him); ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (it was that) φανερωθῇ (should be displayed) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ⁴ ἡμᾶς (Us) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐργάζεσθαι (to work) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), ἕως (while) ἡμέρα (day) ἐστίν (it is); ἔρχεται (is coming) νὺξ (night), ὅτε (when) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) ἐργάζεσθαι (to work). ⁵ ὅταν (While) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὦ (I shall be), φῶς (the light) εἰμι (I am) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).” ⁶ Ταῦτα (These things) εἰπὼν (having said), ἔπτυσεν (He spat) χαμαὶ (on the ground), καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (made) πηλὸν (clay) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πτύσματος (spittle), καὶ (and) ἐπέχρισεν* (applied) αὐτοῦ (to him) τὸν (the) πηλὸν (clay) ἐπὶ (to) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes). ⁷ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὕπαγε (Go), νίψαι (wash) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) κολυμβήθραν (pool) τοῦ (-) Σιλωάμ (of Siloam),” ὃ (which) ἑρμηνεύεται (means) Ἀπεσταλμένος (Sent). ἀπῆλθεν (He went) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) ἐνίψατο (washed), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came back) βλέπων (seeing). ⁸ Οἱ (The) οὖν (therefore) γείτονες (neighbors) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) θεωροῦντες (having seen) αὐτὸν (him) τὸ (-) πρότερον (before), ὅτι (that) προσαίτης (a beggar) ἦν (he was), ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὐχ (Not) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (he who) καθήμενος (was sitting) καὶ (and) προσαιτῶν (begging)?” ⁹ Ἄλλοι (Some) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (it is),” ἄλλοι (but others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὐχί (No), ἀλλὰ (but) ὅμοιος (like) αὐτῷ (him) ἐστιν (he is).” Ἐκεῖνος (He) ἔλεγεν (kept saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am he).” ¹⁰ Ἔλεγον (They were saying) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him), “Πῶς (How) οὖν (then) ἠνεῴχθησάν (were opened) σου (of you) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοί (eyes)?” ¹¹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ἐκεῖνος (He), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) ὁ (-) λεγόμενος (called) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πηλὸν (clay) ἐποίησεν (made), καὶ (and) ἐπέχρισέν (anointed) μου (of me) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), καὶ (and) εἶπέν (He said) μοι (to me) ὅτι (-), ‘Ὕπαγε (Go) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) Σιλωὰμ (Siloam) καὶ (and) νίψαι (wash).’ ἀπελθὼν (Having gone) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) νιψάμενος (having washed), ἀνέβλεψα (I received sight).” ¹² Καὶ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ποῦ (Where) ἐστιν (is) ἐκεῖνος (He)?” Λέγει (He says), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I know).” ¹³ Ἄγουσιν (They bring) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees) τόν (who) ποτε (once was) τυφλόν (blind). ¹⁴ ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τὸν (the) πηλὸν (clay) ἐποίησεν (had made) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἀνέῳξεν (opened) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes). ¹⁵ πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) ἠρώτων (were asking) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) πῶς (how) ἀνέβλεψεν (he had received sight). Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πηλὸν (Clay) ἐπέθηκέν (He put) μου (of me) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes), καὶ (and) ἐνιψάμην (I washed), καὶ (and) βλέπω (I see).” ¹⁶ Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) τινές (some), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) οὗτος (this) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man), ὅτι (for) τὸ (the) σάββατον (Sabbath) οὐ (not) τηρεῖ (He does keep).” Ἄλλοι (Others) [δὲ] (however) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Πῶς (How) δύναται (is able) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinful) τοιαῦτα (such) σημεῖα (signs) ποιεῖν (to do)?” Καὶ (And) σχίσμα (division) ἦν (there was) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them). ¹⁷ λέγουσιν (They say) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (to the) τυφλῷ (blind man) πάλιν (again), “Τί (What) σὺ (you) λέγεις (say) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅτι (for) ἠνέῳξέν (He opened) σου (of you) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) ὅτι (-), “Προφήτης (A prophet) ἐστίν (He is).” ¹⁸ Οὐκ (Not) ἐπίστευσαν (did believe) οὖν (then) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (him) ὅτι (that) ἦν (he had been) τυφλὸς (blind) καὶ (and) ἀνέβλεψεν (had received sight), ἕως (until) ὅτου (when) ἐφώνησαν (they called) τοὺς (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοῦ (-) ἀναβλέψαντος (having received sight). ¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτοὺς (them) λέγοντες (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) ὑμῶν (of you), ὃν (of whom) ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (that) τυφλὸς (blind) ἐγεννήθη (he was born)? πῶς (How) οὖν (then) βλέπει (does he see) ἄρτι (presently)?” ²⁰ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said), “Οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) τυφλὸς (blind) ἐγεννήθη (he was born). ²¹ πῶς (How) δὲ (however) νῦν (presently) βλέπει (he sees), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know), ἢ (or) τίς (who) ἤνοιξεν (opened) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), ἡμεῖς (we) οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (know); αὐτὸν (him) ἐρωτήσατε (ask); ἡλικίαν (age) ἔχει (has) αὐτὸς (He). περὶ (Concerning) ἑαυτοῦ (himself), λαλήσει (he will speak).” ²² Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (because) ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) τοὺς (of the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews); ἤδη (already) γὰρ (for) συνετέθειντο (had agreed together) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἵνα (that) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁμολογήσῃ (should confess) Χριστόν (Christ), ἀποσυνάγωγος (expelled from the synagogue) γένηται (he would be). ²³ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἶπαν (said) ὅτι (-), “Ἡλικίαν (Age) ἔχει (he has); αὐτὸν (him) ἐπερωτήσατε (ask).” ²⁴ Ἐφώνησαν (They called) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐκ (out) δευτέρου (a second time) ὃς (who) ἦν (had been) τυφλὸς (blind), καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Δὸς (Give) δόξαν (glory) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God)! ἡμεῖς (We) οἴδαμεν (know) ὅτι (that) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἁμαρτωλός (a sinner) ἐστιν (is).” ²⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) οὖν (then) ἐκεῖνος (he), “Εἰ (Whether) ἁμαρτωλός (a sinner) ἐστιν (He is), οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I know). ἓν (One thing) οἶδα (I do know), ὅτι (that) τυφλὸς (blind) ὢν (being), ἄρτι (now) βλέπω (I see).” ²⁶ Εἶπον* (They said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him), “Τί (What) ἐποίησέν (did He) σοι (to you)? πῶς (How) ἤνοιξέν (opened He) σου (of you) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes)?” ²⁷ Ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτοῖς (them), “Εἶπον (I told) ὑμῖν (you) ἤδη (already), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠκούσατε (you did listen). τί (Why) πάλιν (again) θέλετε (do you wish) ἀκούειν (to hear)? μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) θέλετε (do wish) αὐτοῦ (His) μαθηταὶ (disciples) γενέσθαι (to become)?” ²⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐλοιδόρησαν (they railed at) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) εἶπον* (said), “Σὺ (You) μαθητὴς (a disciple) εἶ (are) ἐκείνου (of that One); ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) τοῦ (-) Μωϋσέως (of Moses) ἐσμὲν (are) μαθηταί (disciples). ²⁹ ἡμεῖς (We) οἴδαμεν (know) ὅτι (that) Μωϋσεῖ (to Moses) λελάληκεν (has spoken) ὁ (-) Θεός (God); τοῦτον (this man) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know) πόθεν (from where) ἐστίν (is).” ³⁰ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) θαυμαστόν (an amazing thing) ἐστιν (is), ὅτι (that) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know) πόθεν (from where) ἐστίν (He is), καὶ (and yet) ἤνοιξέν (He opened) μου (my) τοὺς (-) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes). ³¹ οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) οὐκ (not) ἀκούει (does hear); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) θεοσεβὴς (God-fearing) ᾖ (is), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ποιῇ (does), τούτου (him) ἀκούει (He hears). ³² ἐκ (Out of) τοῦ (the) αἰῶνος (age) οὐκ (never) ἠκούσθη (it has been heard), ὅτι (that) ἠνέῳξέν (opened) τις (anyone) ὀφθαλμοὺς (the eyes) τυφλοῦ (of one blind) γεγεννημένου (having been born). ³³ εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦν (were) οὗτος (this man) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God), οὐκ (not) ἠδύνατο (He could) ποιεῖν (do) οὐδέν (nothing).” ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐν (In) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) σὺ (you) ἐγεννήθης (were born) ὅλος (entirely), καὶ (and) σὺ (you) διδάσκεις (teach) ἡμᾶς (us)?” καὶ (And) ἐξέβαλον (they cast) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (out). ³⁵ Ἤκουσεν (Heard) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἐξέβαλον (they had cast) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (out), καὶ (and) εὑρὼν (having found) αὐτὸν (him), εἶπεν (He said), “Σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (Man)?” ³⁶ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ἐκεῖνος (he) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Καὶ (And) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is He), Κύριε (Lord), ἵνα (that) πιστεύσω (I may believe) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him)?” ³⁷ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Καὶ (Both) ἑώρακας (You have seen) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the One) λαλῶν (speaking) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you) ἐκεῖνός (He) ἐστιν (is).” ³⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he was saying), “Πιστεύω (I believe), Κύριε (Lord).” καὶ (And) προσεκύνησεν (he worshiped) αὐτῷ (Him). ³⁹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰς (For) κρίμα (judgment) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) τοῦτον (this) ἦλθον (came), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέπωσιν (may see); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) βλέποντες (seeing), τυφλοὶ (blind) γένωνται (may become).” ⁴⁰ ἤκουσαν (Heard) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ταῦτα (these things), οἱ (who) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὄντες (were), καὶ (and) εἶπον* (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) τυφλοί (blind) ἐσμεν (are)?” ⁴¹ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) τυφλοὶ (blind) ἦτε (you were), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) εἴχετε (you would have) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); νῦν (since) δὲ (however) λέγετε (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλέπομεν (We see),’ ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ὑμῶν (of you) μένει (remains).” ^{10 1} “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) εἰσερχόμενος (entering in) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) θύρας (door) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (fold) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀναβαίνων (climbing up) ἀλλαχόθεν (another way), ἐκεῖνος (he) κλέπτης (a thief) ἐστὶν (is) καὶ (and) λῃστής (a robber). ² ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) εἰσερχόμενος (entering in) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) θύρας (door), ποιμήν (shepherd) ἐστιν (is) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep). ³ τούτῳ (To him) ὁ (the) θυρωρὸς (doorkeeper) ἀνοίγει (opens), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀκούει (hear), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) πρόβατα (sheep) φωνεῖ (he calls) κατ’ (by) ὄνομα (name) καὶ (and) ἐξάγει (leads out) αὐτά (them). ⁴ Ὅταν (When) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) πάντα (all) ἐκβάλῃ (he has brought out), ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them) πορεύεται (he goes), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) αὐτῷ (him) ἀκολουθεῖ (follow), ὅτι (because) οἴδασιν (they know) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτοῦ (of him). ⁵ ἀλλοτρίῳ (A stranger) δὲ (however) οὐ (in no way) μὴ (not) ἀκολουθήσουσιν (they will follow), ἀλλὰ (but) φεύξονται (will flee) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they recognize) τῶν (-) ἀλλοτρίων (of strangers) τὴν (the) φωνήν (voice).” ⁶ Ταύτην (This) τὴν (-) παροιμίαν (allegory) εἶπεν (spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus); ἐκεῖνοι (they) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (knew) τίνα (what) ἦν (it was) ἃ (that) ἐλάλει (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them). ⁷ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) ‹αὐτοῖς› (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (-), ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) θύρα (door) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep). ⁸ πάντες (All) ὅσοι (who ever) ἦλθον (came) πρὸ (before) ἐμοῦ (Me), κλέπται (thieves) εἰσὶν (are) καὶ (and) λῃσταί (robbers); ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (did hear) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep). ⁹ ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) θύρα (door); δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) εἰσέλθῃ (enters in), σωθήσεται (he will be saved), καὶ (and) εἰσελεύσεται (he will go in) καὶ (and) ἐξελεύσεται (will go out), καὶ (and) νομὴν (pasture) εὑρήσει (will find). ¹⁰ ὁ (The) κλέπτης (thief) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (that) κλέψῃ (he might steal), καὶ (and) θύσῃ (might kill), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσῃ (might destroy). ἐγὼ (I) ἦλθον (came) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχωσιν (they may have), καὶ (and) περισσὸν (abundantly) ἔχωσιν (may have it). ¹¹ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good). ὁ (The) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλὸς (good), τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τίθησιν (lays down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep); ¹² ὁ (the) μισθωτὸς (hired servant) καὶ (however) οὐκ (not) ὢν (being) ποιμήν (the shepherd), οὗ (whose) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἴδια (own), θεωρεῖ (sees) τὸν (the) λύκον (wolf) ἐρχόμενον (coming), καὶ (and) ἀφίησιν (leaves) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) φεύγει (flees)— καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λύκος (wolf) ἁρπάζει (snatches) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) σκορπίζει (scatters)— ¹³ ὅτι (because) μισθωτός (a hired servant) ἐστιν (he is), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μέλει (is himself concerned) αὐτῷ (to him) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep). ¹⁴ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good); καὶ (and) γινώσκω (I know) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (My own), καὶ (and) γινώσκουσί (am known) με (I) τὰ (by) ἐμά (Mine). ¹⁵ καθὼς (As) γινώσκει (knows) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) γινώσκω (know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of Me) τίθημι (I lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἄλλα (other) πρόβατα (sheep) ἔχω (I have), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) αὐλῆς (fold) ταύτης (this); κἀκεῖνα (those also) δεῖ (it behooves) με (Me) ἀγαγεῖν (to bring), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούσουσιν (they will hear); καὶ (and) γενήσονται* (there will be) μία (one) ποίμνη (flock), εἷς (with one) ποιμήν (shepherd). ¹⁷ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτό (this), με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀγαπᾷ (loves), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) τίθημι (lay down) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) πάλιν (again) λάβω (I might take) αὐτήν (it). ¹⁸ οὐδεὶς (No one) αἴρει* (takes) αὐτὴν (it) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) τίθημι (lay down) αὐτὴν (it) ἀπ’ (of) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself). ἐξουσίαν (Authority) ἔχω (I have) θεῖναι (to lay down) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) πάλιν (again) λαβεῖν (to take) αὐτήν (it). ταύτην (This) τὴν (-) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me).” ¹⁹ Σχίσμα (Division) πάλιν (again) ἐγένετο (there was) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these). ²⁰ ἔλεγον (Were saying) δὲ (now) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), “Δαιμόνιον (A demon) ἔχει (He has), καὶ (and) μαίνεται (is insane); τί (why) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀκούετε (do you listen to)?” ²¹ Ἄλλοι (Others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ταῦτα (These) τὰ (-) ῥήματα (sayings) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are those) δαιμονιζομένου (of one possessed by a demon). μὴ (Not) δαιμόνιον (a demon) δύναται (is able) τυφλῶν (of the blind) ὀφθαλμοὺς (the eyes) ἀνοῖξαι (to open)?” ²² Ἐγένετο (Took place) τότε (at the time) τὰ (the) ἐνκαίνια (Feast of Dedication), ἐν (at) τοῖς (-) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem). χειμὼν (Winter) ἦν (it was), ²³ καὶ (and) περιεπάτει (was walking) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) στοᾷ (porch) τοῦ (-) Σολομῶνος (of Solomon). ²⁴ ἐκύκλωσαν (Encircled) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἕως (Until) πότε (when) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (soul) ἡμῶν (of us) αἴρεις (hold You in suspense)? εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ), εἰπὲ* (tell) ἡμῖν (us) παρρησίᾳ (plainly).” ²⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἶπον (I told) ὑμῖν (you), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) πιστεύετε (you believe). τὰ (The) ἔργα (works) ἃ (that) ἐγὼ (I) ποιῶ (do) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), ταῦτα (these) μαρτυρεῖ (bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). ²⁶ ἀλλὰ (But) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) πιστεύετε (believe), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ἐκ (from among) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep) τῶν (-) ἐμῶν (of Me). ²⁷ τὰ (The) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (of Me), τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούουσιν (hear), κἀγὼ (and I) γινώσκω (know) αὐτά (them), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθοῦσίν (they follow) μοι (Me); ²⁸ κἀγὼ (and I) δίδωμι (give) αὐτοῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); καὶ (and) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀπόλωνται (shall they perish), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) οὐχ (never) ἁρπάσει (will seize) τις (anyone) αὐτὰ (them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρός (hand) μου (of Me). ²⁹ ὁ (The) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὃ (who) δέδωκέν (has given them) μοι (to Me), πάντων (than all) μεῖζόν (greater) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) ἁρπάζειν (to seize them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father). ³⁰ ἐγὼ (I) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἕν (one) ἐσμεν (are).” ³¹ Ἐβάστασαν (Took up) ‹οὖν› (therefore) πάλιν (again) λίθους (stones) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), ἵνα (that) λιθάσωσιν (they might stone) αὐτόν (Him). ³² ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πολλὰ (Many) ἔργα (works) «ἔδειξα (I have shown) ὑμῖν» (you) καλὰ (good) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father); διὰ (because of) ποῖον (which) αὐτῶν (of these) ἔργον (work), ἐμὲ (Me) λιθάζετε (do you stone)?” ³³ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Περὶ (For) καλοῦ (a good) ἔργου (work) οὐ (not) λιθάζομέν (we do stone) σε (You), ἀλλὰ (but) περὶ (for) βλασφημίας (blasphemy), καὶ (and) ὅτι (because) σὺ (You), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ὢν (being), ποιεῖς (make) σεαυτὸν (yourself) Θεόν (God).” ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is it) γεγραμμένον (written) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) ὑμῶν (of you) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἐγὼ (I) εἶπα (said) Θεοί (gods) ἐστε (you are)’? ³⁵ εἰ (If) ἐκείνους (them) εἶπεν (he called) θεοὺς (gods), πρὸς (to) οὓς (whom) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐγένετο (came), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) λυθῆναι (to be broken) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture), ³⁶ ὃν (of Him whom) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἡγίασεν (sanctified) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (do say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλασφημεῖς (You blaspheme),’ ὅτι (because) εἶπον (I said), ‘Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰμι (I am)’? ³⁷ Εἰ (If) οὐ (not) ποιῶ (I do) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), μὴ (not) πιστεύετέ (believe) μοι (Me). ³⁸ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ποιῶ (I do), κἂν (even if) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) πιστεύητε (you believe), τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) πιστεύετε (believe), ἵνα (so that) γνῶτε (you may know) καὶ (and) γινώσκητε (may understand) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me is) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father).” ³⁹ Ἐζήτουν (They were seeking) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) πάλιν (again) πιάσαι (to seize), καὶ (but) ἐξῆλθεν (He went forth) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθεν (He departed) πάλιν (again) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) Ἰωάννης (John) τὸ (-) πρῶτον (at first) βαπτίζων (baptizing). καὶ (And) ἔμεινεν* (He stayed) ἐκεῖ (there). ⁴¹ καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἦλθον (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἰωάννης (John) μὲν (indeed) σημεῖον (sign) ἐποίησεν (did) οὐδέν (no); πάντα (everything) δὲ (however) ὅσα (that) εἶπεν (said) Ἰωάννης (John) περὶ (about) τούτου (this man), ἀληθῆ (true) ἦν (was).” ⁴² καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκεῖ (there). ^{11 1} Ἦν (Was) δέ (now) τις (a certain man) ἀσθενῶν (ailing), Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἀπὸ (of) Βηθανίας (Bethany), ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) κώμης (village) Μαρίας (of Mary) καὶ (and) Μάρθας (Martha), τῆς (the) ἀδελφῆς (sister) αὐτῆς (of her). ² ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ἡ (the one) ἀλείψασα (having anointed) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) μύρῳ (with fragrant oil) καὶ (and) ἐκμάξασα (having wiped) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ταῖς (with the) θριξὶν (hair) αὐτῆς (of her), ἧς (whose) ὁ (-) ἀδελφὸς (brother) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἠσθένει (was sick). ³ ἀπέστειλαν (Sent) οὖν (therefore) αἱ (the) ἀδελφαὶ (sisters) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγουσαι (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), ἴδε (behold), ὃν (he whom) φιλεῖς (You love) ἀσθενεῖ (is sick).” ⁴ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Αὕτη (This) ἡ (-) ἀσθένεια (sickness) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) πρὸς (unto) θάνατον (death), ἀλλ’ (but) ὑπὲρ (for) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) δοξασθῇ (may be glorified) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it).” ⁵ Ἠγάπα (Loved) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὴν (-) Μάρθαν (Martha), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀδελφὴν (sister) αὐτῆς (of her), καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus). ⁶ ὡς (When) οὖν (therefore) ἤκουσεν (He heard) ὅτι (that) ἀσθενεῖ (he is sick), τότε (then) μὲν (indeed) ἔμεινεν (He remained) ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ἦν (He was) τόπῳ (the place) δύο (two) ἡμέρας (days). ⁷ ἔπειτα (Then) μετὰ (after) τοῦτο (this) λέγει (He says) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples), “Ἄγωμεν (Let us go) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea) πάλιν (again).” ⁸ Λέγουσιν (Say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), νῦν (just now) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) σε (You) λιθάσαι (to stone) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) ὑπάγεις (You are going) ἐκεῖ (there)?” ⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐχὶ (Not) δώδεκα (twelve) ὧραί (hours) εἰσιν (are there) τῆς (in the) ἡμέρας (day)? ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (walks) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day), οὐ (not) προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this) βλέπει (he sees); ¹⁰ ἐὰν (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (walks) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νυκτί (night), προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).” ¹¹ Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπεν (He said), καὶ (and) μετὰ (after) τοῦτο (this) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ὁ (the) φίλος (friend) ἡμῶν (of us) κεκοίμηται (has fallen asleep), ἀλλὰ (but) πορεύομαι (I go) ἵνα (that) ἐξυπνίσω (I may awaken) αὐτόν (him).” ¹² Εἶπαν (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτῷ (of Him), “Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) κεκοίμηται (he has fallen asleep), σωθήσεται (he will get well).” ¹³ εἰρήκει (Had spoken) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) περὶ (of) τοῦ (the) θανάτου (death) αὐτοῦ (of him); ἐκεῖνοι (they) δὲ (however) ἔδοξαν (thought) ὅτι (that) περὶ (of) τῆς (the) κοιμήσεως (rest) τοῦ (-) ὕπνου (of sleep) λέγει (He speaks). ¹⁴ Τότε (Then) οὖν (therefore) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) παρρησίᾳ (plainly), “Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἀπέθανεν (has died). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) χαίρω (I rejoice) δι’ (for sake of) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (in order that) πιστεύσητε (you might believe), ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἤμην (I was) ἐκεῖ (there). ἀλλὰ (But) ἄγωμεν (let us go) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him).” ¹⁶ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) Θωμᾶς (Thomas), ὁ (-) λεγόμενος (called) Δίδυμος (Didymus), τοῖς (to the) συμμαθηταῖς (fellow disciples), “Ἄγωμεν (Let go) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (us), ἵνα (that) ἀποθάνωμεν (we may die) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him).” ¹⁷ Ἐλθὼν (Having come) οὖν (therefore), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εὗρεν (found) αὐτὸν (him), τέσσαρας (four) ἤδη (already) ἡμέρας (days) ἔχοντα (having been) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μνημείῳ (tomb). ¹⁸ ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ‹ἡ› (-) Βηθανία (Bethany) ἐγγὺς (near) τῶν (-) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem), ὡς (about) ἀπὸ (away) σταδίων (stadia) δεκαπέντε (fifteen). ¹⁹ πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (now) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐληλύθεισαν (had come) πρὸς (unto) τὴν (-) Μάρθαν (Martha) καὶ (and) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ἵνα (that) παραμυθήσωνται (they might console) αὐτὰς (them) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother). ²⁰ ἡ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Μάρθα (Martha), ὡς (when) ἤκουσεν (she heard) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔρχεται (is coming), ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him); Μαριὰμ (Mary) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) οἴκῳ (house) ἐκαθέζετο (was sitting). ²¹ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (then) ἡ (-) Μάρθα (Martha) πρὸς (to) ‹τὸν› (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), “Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) ἦς (You had been) ὧδε (here), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἀπέθανεν (would have died) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) μου (of me). ²² [ἀλλὰ] (Nevertheless) καὶ (even) νῦν (now) οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσῃ (You might ask) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), δώσει (will give) σοι (You) ὁ (-) Θεός (God).” ²³ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀναστήσεται (Will rise again) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you).” ²⁴ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ἡ (-) Μάρθα (Martha), “Οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) ἀναστήσεται (he will rise again) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).” ²⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἀνάστασις (resurrection) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life); ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), κἂν (even if) ἀποθάνῃ (he should die), ζήσεται (he will live); ²⁶ καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living) καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (shall die), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). πιστεύεις (Believe you) τοῦτο (this)?” ²⁷ Λέγει (She says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord); ἐγὼ (I) πεπίστευκα (have believed) ὅτι (that) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the One) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐρχόμενος (coming).” ²⁸ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (these things) εἰποῦσα (having said), ἀπῆλθεν (she went away) καὶ (and) ἐφώνησεν (called) Μαριὰμ (Mary), τὴν (the) ἀδελφὴν (sister) αὐτῆς (of her), λάθρᾳ (secretly), εἰποῦσα (having said), “Ὁ (The) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) πάρεστιν (is come), καὶ (and) φωνεῖ (He calls) σε (you).” ²⁹ ἐκείνη (She) δὲ (then) ὡς (when) ἤκουσεν (she heard), ἠγέρθη* (rose up) ταχὺ (quickly) καὶ (and) ἤρχετο (was coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him). ³⁰ Οὔπω (Not yet) δὲ (now) ἐληλύθει (had come) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village), ἀλλ’ (but) ἦν (was) ἔτι (still) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τόπῳ (place) ὅπου (where) ὑπήντησεν (had met) αὐτῷ (Him) ἡ (-) Μάρθα (Martha). ³¹ οἱ (The) οὖν (then) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) οἱ (-) ὄντες (being) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) καὶ (and) παραμυθούμενοι (consoling) αὐτήν (her), ἰδόντες (having seen) τὴν (-) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ὅτι (that) ταχέως (quickly) ἀνέστη (she rose up) καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went out), ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῇ (her), δόξαντες (having supposed) ὅτι (-) ὑπάγει (she is going) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb) ἵνα (that) κλαύσῃ (she might weep) ἐκεῖ (there). ³² ἡ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Μαριὰμ (Mary), ὡς (when) ἦλθεν (she came) ὅπου (to where) ἦν (was) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἰδοῦσα (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him), ἔπεσεν (fell) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet), λέγουσα (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) ἦς (You had been) ὧδε (here), οὐκ (not) ἄν (-) μου (of me) ἀπέθανεν (would have died) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother).” ³³ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) ὡς (when) εἶδεν (He saw) αὐτὴν (her) κλαίουσαν (weeping), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) συνελθόντας (having come with) αὐτῇ (her) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) κλαίοντας (weeping), ἐνεβριμήσατο (He was deeply moved) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) καὶ (and) ἐτάραξεν (troubled) ἑαυτόν (Himself). ³⁴ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ποῦ (Where) τεθείκατε (have you laid) αὐτόν (him).” Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), ἔρχου (come) καὶ (and) ἴδε (see).” ³⁵ Ἐδάκρυσεν (Wept) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus). ³⁶ Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Ἴδε (Behold) πῶς (how) ἐφίλει (He loved) αὐτόν (him)!” ³⁷ Τινὲς (Some) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶπαν (said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐδύνατο (was able) οὗτος (this man) ὁ (-) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τοῦ (of the) τυφλοῦ (blind), ποιῆσαι (to have caused) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) οὗτος (this one) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (should have died)?” ³⁸ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again), ἐμβριμώμενος (being deeply moved) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself), ἔρχεται (comes) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) σπήλαιον (a cave), καὶ (and) λίθος (a stone) ἐπέκειτο (was lying) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτῷ (it). ³⁹ λέγει (Says) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄρατε (Take away) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) ἀδελφὴ (sister) τοῦ (of the one) τετελευτηκότος (having died), Μάρθα (Martha), “Κύριε (Lord), ἤδη (already) ὄζει (he stinks), τεταρταῖος (four days) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (it is).” ⁴⁰ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐκ (Not) εἶπόν (said I) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) πιστεύσῃς (you should believe), ὄψῃ (you will see) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁴¹ Ἦραν (They took away) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone). ὁ (-) δὲ (Now) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦρεν (lifted) τοὺς (His) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἄνω (upwards) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Πάτερ (Father), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) ἤκουσάς (You have heard) μου (Me). ⁴² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (and) ᾔδειν (knew) ὅτι (that) πάντοτέ (always) μου (Me) ἀκούεις (You hear); ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) τὸν (-) περιεστῶτα (standing around) εἶπον (I said it), ἵνα (that) πιστεύσωσιν (they may believe) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent).” ⁴³ Καὶ (And) ταῦτα (these things) εἰπὼν (having said), φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) ἐκραύγασεν (He cried out), “Λάζαρε (Lazarus), δεῦρο (come) ἔξω (forth).” ⁴⁴ ἐξῆλθεν (Came forth) ὁ (the one) τεθνηκὼς (having been dead), δεδεμένος (being bound) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) κειρίαις (with linen strips), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ὄψις (face) αὐτοῦ (of him) σουδαρίῳ (in a headcloth) περιεδέδετο (bound about). Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Λύσατε (Unbind) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἄφετε (allow) αὐτὸν (him) ὑπάγειν (to go).” ⁴⁵ Πολλοὶ (Many) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) οἱ (-) ἐλθόντες (having come) πρὸς (to) τὴν (-) Μαριὰμ (Mary) καὶ (and) θεασάμενοι (having seen) ἃ* (what) ἐποίησεν (He did), ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); ⁴⁶ τινὲς (some) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀπῆλθον (went) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (told) αὐτοῖς (them) ἃ (what) ἐποίησεν (had done) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus). ⁴⁷ Συνήγαγον (Gathered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) συνέδριον (a council), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying), “Τί (What) ποιοῦμεν (are we to do)? ὅτι (For) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖ (does) σημεῖα (signs). ⁴⁸ ἐὰν (If) ἀφῶμεν (we shall let him alone) αὐτὸν (Him) οὕτως (like this), πάντες (all) πιστεύσουσιν (will believe) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) ἐλεύσονται (will come) οἱ (the) Ῥωμαῖοι (Romans) καὶ (and) ἀροῦσιν (will take away) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation).” ⁴⁹ Εἷς (One) δέ (however) τις (certain) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), Καϊάφας (Caiaphas), ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ὢν (being) τοῦ (the) ἐνιαυτοῦ (year) ἐκείνου (same), εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know) οὐδέν (nothing), ⁵⁰ οὐδὲ (nor) λογίζεσθε (consider you) ὅτι (that) συμφέρει (it is profitable) ὑμῖν (for you) ἵνα (that) εἷς (one) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἀπόληται (should perish).” ⁵¹ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτοῦ (himself) οὐκ (not) εἶπεν (he said), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ὢν (being) τοῦ (the) ἐνιαυτοῦ (year) ἐκείνου (that), ἐπροφήτευσεν (he prophesied) ὅτι (that) ἔμελλεν (was about) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ἔθνους (nation), ⁵² καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ἔθνους (nation) μόνον (only), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὰ (those) διεσκορπισμένα (having been scattered), συναγάγῃ (He might gather together) εἰς (into) ἕν (one). ⁵³ Ἀπ’ (From) ἐκείνης (that) οὖν (therefore) τῆς (-) ἡμέρας (day) ἐβουλεύσαντο (they took counsel together) ἵνα (that) ἀποκτείνωσιν (they might kill) αὐτόν (Him). ⁵⁴ Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκέτι (no longer) παρρησίᾳ (publicly) περιεπάτει (walked) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χώραν (region) ἐγγὺς (near) τῆς (the) ἐρήμου (wilderness), εἰς (to) Ἐφραὶμ (Ephraim) λεγομένην (called) πόλιν (a city). κἀκεῖ (And there) ἔμεινεν (He stayed) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples). ⁵⁵ Ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ἐγγὺς (near) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), καὶ (and) ἀνέβησαν (went up) πολλοὶ (many) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χώρας (region) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (the) πάσχα (Passover), ἵνα (so that) ἁγνίσωσιν (they might purify) ἑαυτούς (themselves). ⁵⁶ ἐζήτουν (They were seeking) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying) μετ’ (among) ἀλλήλων (one another) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἑστηκότες (standing), “Τί (What) δοκεῖ (does it seem) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἔλθῃ (He will come) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑορτήν (feast)?” ⁵⁷ δεδώκεισαν (Had given) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) ἐντολὰς (a command) ἵνα (that) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) γνῷ (should know) ποῦ (where) ἐστιν (He is), μηνύσῃ (he should show it), ὅπως (so that) πιάσωσιν (they might seize) αὐτόν (Him). ^{12 1} Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), πρὸ (before) ἓξ (six) ἡμερῶν (days) τοῦ (the) πάσχα (Passover), ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) Λάζαρος (Lazarus), ὃν (whom) ἤγειρεν (had raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus). ² ἐποίησαν (They made) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (Him) δεῖπνον (a supper) ἐκεῖ (there), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) Μάρθα (Martha) διηκόνει (was serving), ὁ (-) δὲ (and) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) εἷς (one) ἦν (was) ἐκ (of) τῶν (those) ἀνακειμένων (reclining) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him). ³ ἡ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Μαριὰμ (Mary), λαβοῦσα (having taken) λίτραν (a litra) μύρου (of fragrant oil) νάρδου (of nard) πιστικῆς (pure) πολυτίμου (of great price), ἤλειψεν (anointed) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐξέμαξεν (wiped) ταῖς (with the) θριξὶν (hair) αὐτῆς (of her) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ἡ (the) δὲ (now) οἰκία (house) ἐπληρώθη (was filled) ἐκ (with) τῆς (the) ὀσμῆς (fragrance) τοῦ (of the) μύρου (oil). ⁴ Λέγει (Says) δὲ (however) Ἰούδας (Judas) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), εἷς (one) [ἐκ] (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὁ (-) μέλλων (being about) αὐτὸν (Him) παραδιδόναι (to betray), ⁵ “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) μύρον (fragrant oil) οὐκ (not) ἐπράθη (was sold) τριακοσίων (for three hundred) δηναρίων (denarii) καὶ (and) ἐδόθη (given) πτωχοῖς (to the poor)?” ⁶ εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (however) τοῦτο (this), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (because) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) πτωχῶν (poor) ἔμελεν (he was caring) αὐτῷ (to him), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (because) κλέπτης (a thief) ἦν (he was), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) γλωσσόκομον (money bag) ἔχων (having), τὰ (that) βαλλόμενα (being put into it) ἐβάσταζεν (he used to pilfer). ⁷ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄφες (Leave alone) αὐτήν (her), ἵνα (so that) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) τοῦ (of the) ἐνταφιασμοῦ (burial) μου (of Me) τηρήσῃ (she may keep) αὐτό (it); ⁸ τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) γὰρ (for) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (you); ἐμὲ (Me) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have).” ⁹ Ἔγνω (Knew) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολὺς (great) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖ (there) ἐστιν (He is); καὶ (and) ἦλθον (they came), οὐ (not) διὰ (because of) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) μόνον (only), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἴδωσιν (they might see), ὃν (whom) ἤγειρεν (He had raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead). ¹⁰ ἐβουλεύσαντο (Took counsel) δὲ (however) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἀποκτείνωσιν (they might kill), ¹¹ ὅτι (because) πολλοὶ (many) δι’ (on account of) αὐτὸν (him) ὑπῆγον (were going away) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) καὶ (and) ἐπίστευον (were believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ¹² Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) πολὺς (great) ὁ (-) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑορτήν (feast), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ὅτι (that) ἔρχεται (is coming) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ¹³ ἔλαβον (took) τὰ (the) βαΐα (branches) τῶν (of the) φοινίκων (palm trees) καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθον (went out) εἰς (to) ὑπάντησιν (meet) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) ἐκραύγαζον (were shouting): “Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel)!” ¹⁴ Εὑρὼν (Having found) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὀνάριον (a young donkey), ἐκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτό (it), καθώς (as) ἐστιν (it is) γεγραμμένον (written): ¹⁵ “Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), θυγάτηρ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion). ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεται (comes), καθήμενος (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) πῶλον (a colt) ὄνου (of a donkey).” ¹⁶ Ταῦτα (These things) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (knew) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τὸ (from the) πρῶτον (first), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτε (when) ἐδοξάσθη (was glorified) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τότε (then) ἐμνήσθησαν (they remembered) ὅτι (that) ταῦτα (these things) ἦν (were) ἐπ’ (of) αὐτῷ (Him) γεγραμμένα (written), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) ἐποίησαν (they had done) αὐτῷ (to Him). ¹⁷ Ἐμαρτύρει (Continued to bear witness) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ὁ (-) ὢν (being) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτε (when) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐφώνησεν (He called) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) μνημείου (tomb) καὶ (and) ἤγειρεν (raised) αὐτὸν (him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead). ¹⁸ διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤκουσαν (they heard) τοῦτο (this) αὐτὸν (of His) πεποιηκέναι (having done) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign). ¹⁹ Οἱ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) εἶπαν (said) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Θεωρεῖτε (You see) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ὠφελεῖτε (you gain) οὐδέν (nothing). ἴδε (Behold), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀπῆλθεν (has gone).” ²⁰ Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) Ἕλληνές (Greeks) τινες (certain) ἐκ (among) τῶν (those) ἀναβαινόντων (coming up) ἵνα (that) προσκυνήσωσιν (they might worship) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) ἑορτῇ (feast); ²¹ οὗτοι (these) οὖν (therefore) προσῆλθον (came) Φιλίππῳ (to Philip), τῷ (who was) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθσαϊδὰ (Bethsaida) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), καὶ (and) ἠρώτων (they were asking) αὐτὸν (him) λέγοντες (saying), “Κύριε (Sir), θέλομεν (we desire) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἰδεῖν (to see).” ²² ἔρχεται (Comes) ὁ (-) Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) λέγει (tells) τῷ (-) Ἀνδρέᾳ (Andrew); ἔρχεται (come) Ἀνδρέας (Andrew) καὶ (and) Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) λέγουσιν (tell) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀποκρίνεται (answered) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγων (saying), “Ἐλήλυθεν (Has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) ἵνα (that) δοξασθῇ (should be glorified) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man). ²⁴ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) κόκκος (grain) τοῦ (-) σίτου (of wheat), πεσὼν (having fallen) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground), ἀποθάνῃ (should die), αὐτὸς (it) μόνος (alone) μένει (abides); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (it should die), πολὺν (much) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρει (it bears). ²⁵ ὁ (The one) φιλῶν (loving) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπολλύει (loses) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μισῶν (hating) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) τούτῳ (this), εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) φυλάξει (will keep) αὐτήν (it). ²⁶ ἐὰν (If) ἐμοί (Me) τις (anyone) διακονῇ (serves), ἐμοὶ (Me) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) διάκονος (servant) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) ἔσται (will be). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἐμοὶ (Me) διακονῇ (serves), τιμήσει (will honor) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father). ²⁷ Νῦν (Now) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me) τετάρακται (has been troubled), καὶ (and) τί (what) εἴπω (shall I say)? ‘Πάτερ (Father), σῶσόν (save) με (Me) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ταύτης (this).’ ἀλλὰ (But) διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) ἦλθον (I came) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ὥραν (hour) ταύτην (this). ²⁸ Πάτερ (Father), δόξασόν (glorify) σου (of You) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name).” Ἦλθεν (Came) οὖν (therefore) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven): “Καὶ (Both) ἐδόξασα (I have glorified it), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) δοξάσω (I will glorify it).” ²⁹ Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) ὄχλος (the crowd) ὁ (-) ἑστὼς (having stood) καὶ (and) ἀκούσας (having heard) ἔλεγεν (was saying), “Βροντὴν (Thunder) γεγονέναι (there has been).” ἄλλοι (Others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἄγγελος (An angel) αὐτῷ (to Him) λελάληκεν (has spoken).” ³⁰ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) “Οὐ (Not) δι’ (because of) ἐμὲ (Me) ἡ (the) φωνὴ (voice) αὕτη (this) γέγονεν (has come), ἀλλὰ (but) δι’ (because of) ὑμᾶς (you). ³¹ νῦν (Now) κρίσις (the judgment) ἐστὶν (is) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this); νῦν (now) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (prince) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) ἐκβληθήσεται (will be cast) ἔξω (out). ³² κἀγὼ (And I), ἐὰν (if) ὑψωθῶ (I am lifted up) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), πάντας (all) ἑλκύσω (will draw) πρὸς (to) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ³³ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἔλεγεν (He was saying), σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (by what) θανάτῳ (death) ἤμελλεν (He was about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die). ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) οὖν (then) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), “Ἡμεῖς (We) ἠκούσαμεν (have heard) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) πῶς (how) λέγεις (say) σὺ (you) ὅτι (that) δεῖ (it behooves) ὑψωθῆναι (to be lifted up) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man)? τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man)?” ³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going). ³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them). ³⁷ Τοσαῦτα (So many) δὲ (however) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σημεῖα (signs) πεποιηκότος (having been done) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them), οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευον (they believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him), ³⁸ ἵνα (so that) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (said): “Κύριε (Lord), τίς (who) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) τῇ (the) ἀκοῇ (report) ἡμῶν (of us)? καὶ (And) ὁ (the) βραχίων (arm) Κυρίου (of the Lord) τίνι (to whom) ἀπεκαλύφθη (has been revealed)?” ³⁹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), οὐκ (not) ἠδύναντο (they were able) πιστεύειν (to believe), ὅτι (for) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah): ⁴⁰ “Τετύφλωκεν (He has blinded) αὐτῶν (of them) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), καὶ (and) ἐπώρωσεν (has hardened) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes), καὶ (and) νοήσωσιν (understand) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart), καὶ (and) στραφῶσιν (turn), καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).” ⁴¹ Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) ὅτι (because) εἶδεν (he saw) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him). ⁴² ὅμως (Nevertheless), μέντοι (indeed) καὶ (even) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees) οὐχ (not) ὡμολόγουν (they were confessing), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἀποσυνάγωγοι (put out of the synagogue) γένωνται (they might be); ⁴³ ἠγάπησαν (they loved) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) μᾶλλον (more) ἤπερ (than) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ⁴⁴ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (then) ἔκραξεν (cried out) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), οὐ (not) πιστεύει (believes) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἀλλὰ (but) εἰς (in) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me); ⁴⁵ καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) θεωρῶν (beholding) ἐμὲ (Me), θεωρεῖ (beholds) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me). ⁴⁶ ἐγὼ (I) φῶς (a light) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐλήλυθα (have come), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (should abide). ⁴⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τίς (anyone) μου (of Me) ἀκούσῃ (hears) τῶν (the) ῥημάτων (words) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φυλάξῃ (keeps them), ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κρίνω (do judge) αὐτόν (him), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἦλθον (I came) ἵνα (that) κρίνω (I might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σώσω (I might save) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world). ⁴⁸ ὁ (The one) ἀθετῶν (rejecting) ἐμὲ (Me) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) λαμβάνων (receiving) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἔχει (has) τὸν (one) κρίνοντα (judging) αὐτόν (him): ὁ (The) λόγος (word) ὃν (which) ἐλάλησα (I spoke), ἐκεῖνος (that) κρινεῖ (will judge) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day). ⁴⁹ Ὅτι (For) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξ (from) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) οὐκ (not) ἐλάλησα (spoke), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me) Πατὴρ (Father) αὐτός (Himself), μοι (Me) ἐντολὴν (a commandment) δέδωκεν (gave) τί (what) εἴπω (I should say) καὶ (and) τί (what) λαλήσω (I should speak). ⁵⁰ καὶ (And) οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ζωὴ (life) αἰώνιός (eternal) ἐστιν (is). ἃ (What) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) λαλῶ (speak), καθὼς (as) εἴρηκέν (has said) μοι (to Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), οὕτως (so) λαλῶ (I speak).” ^{13 1} Πρὸ (Before) δὲ (now) τῆς (the) ἑορτῆς (feast) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἦλθεν (had come) αὐτοῦ (His) ἡ (-) ὥρα (hour), ἵνα (that) μεταβῇ (He would depart) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), ἀγαπήσας (having loved) τοὺς (the) ἰδίους (own) τοὺς (who were) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), εἰς (to) τέλος (the end) ἠγάπησεν (He loved) αὐτούς (them). ² καὶ (And) δείπνου (supper) γινομένου (taking place), τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἤδη (already) βεβληκότος (having put) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἵνα (that) παραδοῖ (he should betray) αὐτὸν (Him) Ἰούδας (of Judas), Σίμωνος (son of Simon) Ἰσκαριώτου (Iscariot), ³ εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) πάντα (all things) ἔδωκεν (has given) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθεν (He came forth) καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ὑπάγει (He is going), ⁴ ἐγείρεται (He rises) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) δείπνου (supper) καὶ (and) τίθησιν (lays aside) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments). καὶ (And) λαβὼν (having taken) λέντιον (a towel), διέζωσεν (He girded) ἑαυτόν (Himself). ⁵ εἶτα (After that), βάλλει (He pours) ὕδωρ (water) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) νιπτῆρα (basin), καὶ (and) ἤρξατο (He began) νίπτειν (to wash) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), καὶ (and) ἐκμάσσειν (to wipe them) τῷ (with the) λεντίῳ (towel) ᾧ (with which) ἦν (He was) διεζωσμένος (girded). ⁶ Ἔρχεται (He comes) οὖν (then) πρὸς (to) Σίμωνα (Simon) Πέτρον (Peter), λέγει (who says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), σύ (You) μου (of me) νίπτεις (do wash) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet)?” ⁷ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὃ (What) ἐγὼ (I) ποιῶ (do) σὺ (you) οὐκ (not) οἶδας (know) ἄρτι (presently); γνώσῃ (you will know) δὲ (however) μετὰ (after) ταῦτα (these things).” ⁸ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Πέτρος (Peter), “Οὐ (No) μὴ (not) νίψῃς (shall You wash) μου (of me) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) αὐτῷ (him), “Ἐὰν (If) μὴ (not) νίψω (I wash) σε (you), οὐκ (not) ἔχεις (you have) μέρος (part) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me).” ⁹ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter), “Κύριε (Lord), μὴ (not) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) μου (of me) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) κεφαλήν (head).” ¹⁰ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὁ (The one) λελουμένος (having been bathed) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) χρείαν (need), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) νίψασθαι (to wash), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔστιν (is) καθαρὸς (clean) ὅλος (wholly); καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you all) καθαροί (clean) ἐστε (are), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐχὶ (not) πάντες (all).” ¹¹ ᾔδει (He knew) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the one who) παραδιδόντα (was betraying) αὐτόν (Him); διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) εἶπεν (He said) ὅτι (-), “Οὐχὶ (Not) πάντες (all) καθαροί (clean) ἐστε (you are).” ¹² Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔνιψεν (He had washed) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἔλαβεν (taken) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἀνέπεσεν (having reclined) πάλιν (again), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γινώσκετε (Do you know) τί (what) πεποίηκα (I have done) ὑμῖν (to you)? ¹³ ὑμεῖς (You) φωνεῖτέ (call) με (Me) Ὁ (-) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Κύριος (Lord), καὶ (and) καλῶς (rightly) λέγετε (you say), εἰμὶ (I am) γάρ (for). ¹⁴ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) ἔνιψα (have washed) ὑμῶν (your) τοὺς (-) πόδας (feet), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ὀφείλετε (ought) ἀλλήλων (of one another) νίπτειν (to wash) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet). ¹⁵ ὑπόδειγμα (A pattern) γὰρ (for) ἔδωκα (I gave) ὑμῖν (you), ἵνα (that) καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I) ἐποίησα (did) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ποιῆτε (should do). ¹⁶ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) δοῦλος (a servant) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him), οὐδὲ (nor) ἀπόστολος (a messenger) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the one) πέμψαντος (having sent) αὐτόν (him). ¹⁷ εἰ (If) ταῦτα (these things) οἴδατε (you know), μακάριοί (blessed) ἐστε (are you) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you do) αὐτά (them). ¹⁸ Οὐ (Not) περὶ (about) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you) λέγω (I speak). ἐγὼ (I) οἶδα (know) τίνας (whom) ἐξελεξάμην (I chose), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) πληρωθῇ (may be fulfilled): ‘Ὁ (The one) τρώγων (eating) μου (of Me) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread) ἐπῆρεν (lifted up) ἐπ’ (against) ἐμὲ (Me) τὴν (the) πτέρναν (heel) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ ¹⁹ ἀπ’ (From) ἄρτι (this time) λέγω (I am telling) ὑμῖν (you) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) γενέσθαι (it comes to pass), ἵνα (so that) πιστεύσητε* (you should believe) ὅταν (when) γένηται (it comes to pass), ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He). ²⁰ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁ (the one) λαμβάνων (receiving) ἄν (-) τινα (any) πέμψω (I shall send), ἐμὲ (Me) λαμβάνει (receives); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἐμὲ (Me) λαμβάνων (receiving), λαμβάνει (receives) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me).” ²¹ Ταῦτα (These things) εἰπὼν (having said), ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐταράχθη (was troubled) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit), καὶ (and) ἐμαρτύρησεν (He testified) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) παραδώσει (will betray) με (Me).” ²² Ἔβλεπον (Began to look) εἰς (upon) ἀλλήλους (one another) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), ἀπορούμενοι (being uncertain) περὶ (of) τίνος (whom) λέγει (He is speaking). ²³ ἦν (There was) ἀνακείμενος (reclining) εἷς (one) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόλπῳ (bosom) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), ὃν (whom) ἠγάπα (loved) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus). ²⁴ νεύει (Motions) οὖν (therefore) τούτῳ (to him) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) ‹πυθέσθαι (to ask) τίς (who) ἂν (it) εἴη› (is) περὶ (about) οὗ (whom) λέγει (He is speaking)? ²⁵ ἀναπεσὼν (Having leaned) [οὖν] (then) ἐκεῖνος (he) οὕτως (thus) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) στῆθος (breast) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), τίς (who) ἐστιν (is it)?” ²⁶ Ἀποκρίνεται (Answers) 〈οὖν〉 (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐκεῖνός (He) ἐστιν (it is) ᾧ (to whom) ἐγὼ (I) βάψω (will dip) τὸ (the) ψωμίον (morsel) καὶ (and) δώσω (will give) αὐτῷ (him).” βάψας (Having dipped) οὖν (then) τὸ (the) ψωμίον (morsel), λαμβάνει (He takes it) καὶ (and) δίδωσιν (gives it) Ἰούδᾳ (to Judas), Σίμωνος (son of Simon) Ἰσκαριώτου (Iscariot). ²⁷ καὶ (And) μετὰ (after) τὸ (the) ψωμίον (morsel), τότε (then) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) εἰς (into) ἐκεῖνον (him) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan). Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὃ (What) ποιεῖς (you do), ποίησον (do) τάχιον (quickly).” ²⁸ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἔγνω (knew) τῶν (of those) ἀνακειμένων (reclining) πρὸς (to) τί (what) εἶπεν (He spoke) αὐτῷ (to him). ²⁹ τινὲς (Some) γὰρ (for) ἐδόκουν (were thinking), ἐπεὶ (since) τὸ (the) γλωσσόκομον (money bag) εἶχεν (had) Ἰούδας (Judas), ὅτι (that) λέγει (is saying) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀγόρασον (Buy) ὧν (what things) χρείαν (need of) ἔχομεν (we have) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) ἑορτήν (feast),” ἢ (or) τοῖς (to the) πτωχοῖς (poor) ἵνα (that) τι (something) δῷ (he should give). ³⁰ λαβὼν (Having received) οὖν (therefore) τὸ (the) ψωμίον (morsel), ἐκεῖνος (he) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) εὐθύς (immediately); ἦν (it was) δὲ (now) νύξ (night). ³¹ Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἐξῆλθεν (he had gone out), λέγει (says) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Νῦν (Now) ἐδοξάσθη (has been glorified) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐδοξάσθη (has been glorified) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him). ³² εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) δοξάσει (will glorify) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (Himself), καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (immediately) δοξάσει (will glorify) αὐτόν (Him). ³³ Τεκνία (Little children), ἔτι (yet) μικρὸν (a little while) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (I am). ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me); καὶ (and), καθὼς (as) εἶπον (I said) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) ὅτι (-): ‘Ὅπου (Where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come),’ καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγω (I say) ἄρτι (now). ³⁴ Ἐντολὴν (A commandment) καινὴν (new) δίδωμι (I give) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you should love) ἀλλήλους (one another); καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I have loved) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀγαπᾶτε (should love) ἀλλήλους (one another). ³⁵ ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γνώσονται (will know) πάντες (all) ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples) ἐστε (you are), ἐὰν (if) ἀγάπην (love) ἔχητε (you have) ἐν (among) ἀλλήλοις (one another).” ³⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter), “Κύριε (Lord), ποῦ (where) ὑπάγεις (go You)?” Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) [αὐτῷ] (him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὅπου (Where) ὑπάγω (I go), οὐ (not) δύνασαί (you are able) μοι (Me) νῦν (now) ἀκολουθῆσαι (to follow); ἀκολουθήσεις (you will follow) δὲ (however) ὕστερον (afterward).” ³⁷ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ‹ὁ› (-) Πέτρος (Peter), “Κύριε (Lord), διὰ (because of) τί (why) οὐ (not) δύναμαί (am I able) σοι (You) ἀκολουθῆσαι (to follow) ἄρτι (presently)? τὴν (The) ψυχήν (life) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) σοῦ (You) θήσω (I will lay down).” ³⁸ Ἀποκρίνεται (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Τὴν (The) ψυχήν (life) σου (of you) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (Me) θήσεις (will you lay down)? ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀλέκτωρ (the rooster) φωνήσῃ (will crow), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me) τρίς (three times). ^{14 1} Μὴ (Not) ταρασσέσθω (let be troubled) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart). πιστεύετε (You believe) εἰς (in) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καὶ (also) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me) πιστεύετε (believe). ² ἐν (In) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), μοναὶ (mansions) πολλαί (many) εἰσιν (there are); εἰ (if) δὲ (now) μή (not), εἶπον (would I have told) ἂν (-) ὑμῖν (you) ὅτι (that) πορεύομαι (I go) ἑτοιμάσαι (to prepare) τόπον (a place) ὑμῖν (for you)? ³ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) πορευθῶ (I go) καὶ (and) ἑτοιμάσω (prepare) τόπον (a place) ὑμῖν (for you), πάλιν (again) ἔρχομαι (I am coming) καὶ (and) παραλήμψομαι (will receive) ὑμᾶς (you) πρὸς (to) ἐμαυτόν (Myself), ἵνα (that) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἦτε (may be). ⁴ καὶ (And) ὅπου (to the place) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (am going), οἴδατε (you know) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way).” ⁵ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Θωμᾶς (Thomas), “Κύριε (Lord), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγεις (You are going); πῶς (how) σὺ (you) λέγεις (say), ‘Δεῖξον (Show) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father)?’ ¹⁰ οὐ (Not) πιστεύεις (believe you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me) ἐστιν (is)? τὰ (The) ῥήματα (words) ἃ (that) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (speak) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπ’ (from) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) οὐ (not) λαλῶ (I speak), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Πατὴρ (the Father) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μένων (dwelling) ποιεῖ (does) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹¹ πιστεύετέ (Believe) μοι (Me) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me); εἰ (if) δὲ (but) μή (not), διὰ (because of) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτὰ (themselves) πιστεύετε (believe). ¹² Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἃ (that) ἐγὼ (I) ποιῶ (do), κἀκεῖνος (also he) ποιήσει (will do), καὶ (and) μείζονα (greater) τούτων (than these) ποιήσει (he will do), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) πορεύομαι (am going). ¹³ καὶ (And) ὅ¦τι (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), τοῦτο (this) ποιήσω (will I do), ἵνα (so that) δοξασθῇ (may be glorified) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son). ¹⁴ ἐάν (If) τι (anything) αἰτήσητέ (you ask) με (Me) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐγὼ (I) ποιήσω (will do it). ¹⁵ Ἐὰν (If) ἀγαπᾶτέ (you love) με (Me), τὰς (-) ἐντολὰς (commandments) τὰς (-) ἐμὰς (My) τηρήσετε (you will keep). ¹⁶ Κἀγὼ (And I) ἐρωτήσω (will ask) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (and) ἄλλον (another) Παράκλητον (Helper) δώσει (He will give) ὑμῖν (you), ἵνα (that) ᾖ (He may be) «μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα» (age), ¹⁷ τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὃ (whom) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) λαβεῖν (to receive), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) θεωρεῖ (it does see) αὐτὸ (Him), οὐδὲ (nor) γινώσκει (know). ὑμεῖς (But you) γινώσκετε (know) αὐτό (Him), ὅτι (for) παρ’ (with) ὑμῖν (you) μένει (He abides), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσται (He will be). ¹⁸ Οὐκ (Not) ἀφήσω (I will leave) ὑμᾶς (you) ὀρφανούς (as orphans); ἔρχομαι (I am coming) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹⁹ ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) με (Me) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖ (sees), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) θεωρεῖτέ (see) με (Me); ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ζῶ (live), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ζήσετε (will live). ²⁰ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) γνώσεσθε (will know) ὑμεῖς (you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ²¹ ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τηρῶν (keeping) αὐτὰς (them), ἐκεῖνός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), ἀγαπηθήσεται (will be loved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me); κἀγὼ (and I) ἀγαπήσω (will love) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἐμφανίσω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰούδας (Judas), οὐχ (not) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), “Κύριε (Lord), καὶ (then) τί (what) γέγονεν (has occurred) ὅτι (that) ἡμῖν (to us) μέλλεις (You are about) ἐμφανίζειν (to manifest) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καὶ (and) οὐχὶ (not) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world)?” ²³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) με (Me), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσει (he will keep), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἐλευσόμεθα (we will come), καὶ (and) μονὴν (a home) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him) ποιησόμεθα (will make). ²⁴ ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) μου (of Me) οὐ (not) τηρεῖ (does keep); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὃν (that) ἀκούετε (you hear), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐμὸς (Mine), ἀλλὰ (but) τοῦ (of the) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me) Πατρός (Father). ²⁵ Ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have said) ὑμῖν (to you), παρ’ (with) ὑμῖν (you) μένων (abiding). ²⁶ ὁ (The) δὲ (however) Παράκλητος (Helper), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), ὃ (whom) πέμψει (will send) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐκεῖνος (He) ὑμᾶς (you) διδάξει (will teach) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) ὑπομνήσει (will bring to remembrance) ὑμᾶς (of you) πάντα (all things) ἃ (that) εἶπον (have said) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐγώ (I). ²⁷ Εἰρήνην (Peace) ἀφίημι (I leave) ὑμῖν (with you); εἰρήνην (peace) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (My) δίδωμι (I give) ὑμῖν (to you); οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) δίδωσιν (gives), ἐγὼ (I) δίδωμι (give) ὑμῖν (to you). μὴ (Not) ταρασσέσθω (let be troubled) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart), μηδὲ (nor) δειλιάτω (let it fear). ²⁸ ἠκούσατε (You heard) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Ὑπάγω (I am going away) καὶ (and) ἔρχομαι (I am coming) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you).’ εἰ (If) ἠγαπᾶτέ (you loved) με (Me), ἐχάρητε (you would have rejoiced) ἄν (-) ὅτι (that) πορεύομαι (I am going) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) μείζων (greater than) μού (I) ἐστιν (is). ²⁹ καὶ (And) νῦν (now) εἴρηκα (I have told) ὑμῖν (you) πρὶν (before) γενέσθαι (it comes to pass), ἵνα (that) ὅταν (when) γένηται (it shall have come to pass), πιστεύσητε (you might believe). ³⁰ Οὐκέτι (No longer) πολλὰ (much) λαλήσω (I will speak) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you); ἔρχεται (comes) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) τοῦ (of this) κόσμου (world) ἄρχων (ruler), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (he has) οὐδέν (nothing); ³¹ ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) γνῷ (may know) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὅτι (that) ἀγαπῶ (I love) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (and) καθὼς (as) ἐνετείλατο (has commanded) μοι (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), οὕτως (thus) ποιῶ (I do). καὶ (and) πᾶν (every one) τὸ (-) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρον (bearing), καθαίρει (He prunes) αὐτὸ (it), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πλείονα (more) φέρῃ (it may bear). ³ ἤδη (Already) ὑμεῖς (you) καθαροί (clean) ἐστε (are) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ὃν (that) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁴ μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). καθὼς (As) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρειν (to bear) ἀφ’ (of) ἑαυτοῦ (itself), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μένῃ (it abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀμπέλῳ (vine), οὕτως (so) οὐδὲ (neither can) ὑμεῖς (you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μένητε (you abide). ⁵ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἄμπελος (vine); ὑμεῖς (you are) τὰ (the) κλήματα (branches). ὁ (The one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), οὗτος (he) φέρει (bears) καρπὸν (fruit) πολύν (much). ὅτι (For) χωρὶς (apart from) ἐμοῦ (Me) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able) ποιεῖν (to do) οὐδέν (nothing). ⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned). ⁷ ἐὰν (If) μείνητε (you abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (abide), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you wish), αἰτήσασθε (you shall ask), καὶ (and) γενήσεται (it will come to pass) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁸ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πολὺν (much) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) γένησθε* (you shall be) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples). ⁹ Καθὼς (As) ἠγάπησέν (has loved) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἠγάπησα (have loved). μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) τῇ (-) ἐμῇ (of Me). ¹⁰ ἐὰν (If) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) τηρήσητε (you keep), μενεῖτε (you will abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) μου (of Me), καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I), «τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου» (of Me) «τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς» (commandments) τετήρηκα (have kept), καὶ (and) μένω (I abide) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love). ¹¹ Ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) ἡ (-) χαρὰ (joy) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ᾖ (may be), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ὑμῶν (of you) πληρωθῇ (may be full). ¹² Αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (-) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) ἀλλήλους (one another) καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I loved) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹³ μείζονα (Greater) ταύτης (than this) ἀγάπην (love) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἔχει (has), ἵνα (that) τις (one) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) θῇ (should lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) φίλων (friends) αὐτοῦ (of him). ¹⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) φίλοι (friends) μού (of Me) ἐστε (are) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you do) ἃ* (what) ἐγὼ (I) ἐντέλλομαι (command) ὑμῖν (you). ¹⁵ οὐκέτι (No longer) λέγω (I call) ὑμᾶς (you) δούλους (servants), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) τί (what) ποιεῖ (is doing) αὐτοῦ (his) ὁ (-) κύριος (master). ὑμᾶς (You) δὲ (however) εἴρηκα (I have called) φίλους (friends), ὅτι (because) πάντα (all things) ἃ (that) ἤκουσα (I heard) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), ἐγνώρισα (I have made known) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁶ οὐχ (Not) ὑμεῖς (you) με (Me) ἐξελέξασθε (chose), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔθηκα (appointed) ὑμᾶς (you) ἵνα (that) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑπάγητε (should go) καὶ (and) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) καρπὸς (fruit) ὑμῶν (of you) μένῃ (should remain); ἵνα (so that) ὅ¦τι (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), δῷ (He may give) ὑμῖν (you). ¹⁷ ταῦτα (These things) ἐντέλλομαι (I command) ὑμῖν (you), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) ἀλλήλους (one another). ¹⁸ Εἰ (If) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὑμᾶς (you) μισεῖ (hates), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐμὲ (Me) πρῶτον (before) ὑμῶν (you) μεμίσηκεν (it has hated). ¹⁹ εἰ (If) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἦτε (you were), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ἂν (-) τὸ (as its) ἴδιον (own) ἐφίλει (would love you); ὅτι (because) δὲ (however) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐστέ (you are), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) μισεῖ (hates) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world). ²⁰ Μνημονεύετε (Remember) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said) ὑμῖν (to you): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) δοῦλος (a servant) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ εἰ (If) ἐμὲ (Me) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted), καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) διώξουσιν (they will persecute); εἰ (if) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) ἐτήρησαν (they kept), καὶ (also) τὸν (-) ὑμέτερον (yours) τηρήσουσιν (they will keep). ²¹ ἀλλὰ (But) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) ποιήσουσιν (they will do) εἰς (against) ὑμᾶς (you) διὰ (on account of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they have known) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me). ²² εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦλθον (I had come) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησα (spoken) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) εἴχοσαν (they would have had); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) πρόφασιν (excuse) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) περὶ (for) τῆς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sin) αὐτῶν (of them). ²³ Ὁ (The one) ἐμὲ (Me) μισῶν (hating), καὶ (also) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me) μισεῖ (hates). ²⁴ εἰ (If) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) μὴ (not) ἐποίησα (I had done) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them) ἃ (that) οὐδεὶς (no) ἄλλος (other) ἐποίησεν (has done), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) εἴχοσαν (they would have had); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) καὶ (both) ἑωράκασιν (they have seen) καὶ (and) μεμισήκασιν (have hated) καὶ (both) ἐμὲ (Me) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me). ²⁵ ἀλλ’ (But this is) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῇ (may be fulfilled) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὁ (-) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) αὐτῶν (of them) γεγραμμένος (having been written) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἐμίσησάν (They hated) με (Me) δωρεάν (without cause).’ ²⁶ Ὅταν (When) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) Παράκλητος (Helper), ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) πέμψω (will send) ὑμῖν (to you) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὃ (who) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐκπορεύεται (goes forth), ἐκεῖνος (He) μαρτυρήσει (will bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). ²⁷ καὶ (Also) ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) μαρτυρεῖτε (bear witness), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστε (you are). ^{16 1} Ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) σκανδαλισθῆτε (you might fall away). ² ἀποσυναγώγους (Out of the synagogues) ποιήσουσιν (they will put) ὑμᾶς (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ἵνα (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀποκτείνας (having killed) ὑμᾶς (you) δόξῃ (will think) λατρείαν (it is a service) προσφέρειν (to offer) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ³ καὶ (And) ταῦτα (these things) ποιήσουσιν (they will do), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (they know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐμέ (Me). ⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ταῦτα (these things) λελάληκα (I have said) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (so that) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (might have come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) αὐτῶν (of them), μνημονεύητε (you may remember) αὐτῶν (them), ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said them) ὑμῖν (to you). ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐξ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) οὐκ (not) εἶπον (I said), ὅτι (because) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) ἤμην (I was). ⁵ Νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ὑπάγω (I go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (none) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἐρωτᾷ (asks) με (Me), ‘Ποῦ (Where) ὑπάγεις (are You going)?’ ⁶ ἀλλ’ (But) ὅτι (because) ταῦτα (these things) λελάληκα (I have said) ὑμῖν (to you), ἡ (-) λύπη (sorrow) πεπλήρωκεν (has filled) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) καρδίαν (heart). ⁷ ἀλλ’ (But) ἐγὼ (I) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you), συμφέρει (it is profitable) ὑμῖν (for you) ἵνα (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἀπέλθω (should go away). ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) ἀπέλθω (I go away), ὁ (the) Παράκλητος (Helper) οὐ (no) μὴ (not at all) ἔλθῃ (will come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) πορευθῶ (I go), πέμψω (I will send) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐλέγξει (will convict) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) περὶ (concerning) ἁμαρτίας (sin), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) κρίσεως (judgment): ⁹ περὶ (concerning) ἁμαρτίας (sin) μέν (indeed), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) πιστεύουσιν (do they believe) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me); ¹⁰ περὶ (concerning) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) δέ (now), ὅτι (because) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) ὑπάγω (I go away), καὶ (and) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖτέ (you behold) με (Me); ¹¹ περὶ (concerning) δὲ (now) κρίσεως (judgment), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (ruler) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) κέκριται (has been judged). ¹² Ἔτι (Yet) πολλὰ (many things) ἔχω (I have) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγειν (to say), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able) βαστάζειν (to bear them) ἄρτι (now). ¹³ ὅταν (When) δὲ (however) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐκεῖνος (He), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὁδηγήσει (He will guide) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν* (into) τῇ* (the) ἀληθείᾳ* (truth) πάσῃ* (all); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) λαλήσει (He will speak) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτοῦ (Himself), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅσα (whatever) ἀκούσει* (He may hear), λαλήσει (He will speak); καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐρχόμενα (coming) ἀναγγελεῖ (He will declare) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁴ ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐμὲ (Me) δοξάσει (will glorify), ὅτι (for) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (that which is) ἐμοῦ (Mine) λήμψεται (He will take), καὶ (and) ἀναγγελεῖ (will disclose) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁵ πάντα (All things) ὅσα (whatever) ἔχει (has) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ἐμά (Mine) ἐστιν (are); διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), εἶπον (I said) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (that which is) ἐμοῦ (Mine) λαμβάνει (He will take) καὶ (and) ἀναγγελεῖ (will disclose) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁶ Μικρὸν (A little while) καὶ (and) οὐκέτι (no longer) θεωρεῖτέ (you do behold) με (Me); καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὄψεσθέ (you will see) με (Me).” ¹⁷ Εἶπαν (Said) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (some of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of him) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), “Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) τοῦτο (this) ὃ (that) λέγει (He says) ἡμῖν (to us), ‘Μικρὸν (A little while) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θεωρεῖτέ (you do behold) με (Me); καὶ (and), πάλιν (again) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὄψεσθέ (you will see) με (Me)’ καί (and) ‘Ὅτι (Because) ὑπάγω (I am going) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father)’?” ¹⁸ ἔλεγον (They were saying) οὖν (therefore), “Τοῦτο (This) «τί (what) ἐστιν» (is) ὃ (that) λέγει (He says), ‘Τὸ (a) μικρόν (little while)’? οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (we do know) τί (what) λαλεῖ (He is saying).” ¹⁹ Ἔγνω (Knew) [ὁ] (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἤθελον (they were desiring) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐρωτᾶν (to ask), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Περὶ (Concerning) τούτου (this) ζητεῖτε (do you inquire) μετ’ (among) ἀλλήλων (one another) ὅτι (that) εἶπον (I said), ‘Μικρὸν (A little while) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θεωρεῖτέ (you do behold) με (Me), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὄψεσθέ (you will see) με (Me)’? ²⁰ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) κλαύσετε (will weep) καὶ (and) θρηνήσετε (will lament) ὑμεῖς (you), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) κόσμος (the world) χαρήσεται (will rejoice). ὑμεῖς (You) λυπηθήσεσθε (will be grieved), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) λύπη (grief) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (to) χαρὰν (joy) γενήσεται (will turn). ²¹ ἡ (The) γυνὴ (woman) ὅταν (when) τίκτῃ (she is giving birth), λύπην (pain) ἔχει (has), ὅτι (because) ἦλθεν (has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) αὐτῆς (of her); ὅταν (when) δὲ (however) γεννήσῃ (she brings forth) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child), οὐκέτι (no longer) μνημονεύει (she remembers) τῆς (the) θλίψεως (tribulation), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) ὅτι (that) ἐγεννήθη (has been born) ἄνθρωπος (a man) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world). ²² καὶ (Also) ὑμεῖς (you) οὖν (therefore), νῦν (now) μὲν (indeed) λύπην (grief) ἔχετε (have); πάλιν (again) δὲ (however) ὄψομαι (I will see) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) χαρήσεται (will rejoice) ὑμῶν (your) ἡ (-) καρδία (heart), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐδεὶς (no one) αἴρει (will take) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you). ²³ Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ἐμὲ (of Me) οὐκ (not) ἐρωτήσετε (you will ask) οὐδέν (nothing). ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἄν (-) τι (whatever) αἰτήσητε (you may ask), τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) «δώσει (He will give) ὑμῖν» (you), «ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου» (of Me). ²⁴ ἕως (Until) ἄρτι (now) οὐκ (not) ᾐτήσατε (you have asked) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me). αἰτεῖτε (Ask) καὶ (and) λήμψεσθε (you will receive), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾖ (may be) πεπληρωμένη (full). ²⁵ Ταῦτα (These things) ἐν (in) παροιμίαις (allegories) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you); ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ὅτε (when) οὐκέτι (no more) ἐν (in) παροιμίαις (allegories) λαλήσω (I will speak) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀλλὰ (but) παρρησίᾳ (plainly) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἀπαγγελῶ (I will report) ὑμῖν (to you). ²⁶ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me) αἰτήσεσθε (you will ask), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἐρωτήσω (will implore) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) περὶ (for) ὑμῶν (you). ²⁷ αὐτὸς (Himself) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) φιλεῖ (loves) ὑμᾶς (you), ὅτι (because) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐμὲ (Me) πεφιλήκατε (have loved) καὶ (and) πεπιστεύκατε (have believed) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθον (came forth). ²⁸ ἐξῆλθον (I came forth) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) καὶ (and) ἐλήλυθα (have come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world); πάλιν (again) ἀφίημι (I leave) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) καὶ (and) πορεύομαι (go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father).” ²⁹ Λέγουσιν (Say) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Ἴδε (Behold), νῦν (now) ἐν (in) παρρησίᾳ (openness) λαλεῖς (You speak), καὶ (and) παροιμίαν (allegory) οὐδεμίαν (not) λέγεις (speak). ³⁰ νῦν (Now) οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) οἶδας (You know) πάντα (all things), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) χρείαν (need) ἔχεις (have) ἵνα (that) τίς (anyone) σε (You) ἐρωτᾷ (should ask). ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) πιστεύομεν (we believe) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθες (You came forth).” ³¹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄρτι (Now) πιστεύετε (do you believe)? ³² ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour), καὶ (and) ἐλήλυθεν (has come), ἵνα (when) σκορπισθῆτε (you will be scattered), ἕκαστος (each) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own), κἀμὲ (and I) μόνον (alone) ἀφῆτε (you shall leave); καὶ (yet) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) μόνος (alone), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστιν (is). ³³ ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχητε (you may have). ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἔχετε (you have). ἀλλὰ (But) θαρσεῖτε (take courage); ἐγὼ (I) νενίκηκα (have overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).” ^{17 1} Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐπάρας (having lifted up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εἶπεν (He said), “Πάτερ (Father), ἐλήλυθεν (has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour); δόξασόν (glorify) σου (Your) τὸν (-) Υἱόν (Son), ἵνα (that) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) δοξάσῃ (may glorify) σέ (You). ² καθὼς (As) ἔδωκας (You gave) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐξουσίαν (authority) πάσης (over all) σαρκός (flesh), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (all) ὃ (whom) δέδωκας (You have given) αὐτῷ (Him), δώσῃ (He may give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). ³ αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (-) αἰώνιος (eternal) ζωὴ (life), ἵνα (that) γινώσκωσιν (they may know) σὲ (You), τὸν (the) μόνον (only) ἀληθινὸν (true) Θεὸν (God), καὶ (and) ὃν (whom) ἀπέστειλας (You have sent), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ). ⁴ ἐγώ (I) σε (You) ἐδόξασα (glorified) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) τελειώσας (having completed) ὃ (that) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me) ἵνα (that) ποιήσω (I should do). ⁵ καὶ (And) νῦν (now) δόξασόν (glorify) με (Me) σύ (You), Πάτερ (Father), παρὰ (with) σεαυτῷ (Yourself), τῇ (with the) δόξῃ (glory) ᾗ (that) εἶχον (I had) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) εἶναι (existed), παρὰ (with) σοί (You). ⁶ Ἐφανέρωσά (I revealed) σου (Your) τὸ (-) ὄνομα (name) τοῖς (to the) ἀνθρώποις (men) οὓς (whom) ἔδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world). σοὶ (Yours) ἦσαν (they were), κἀμοὶ (and to Me) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔδωκας (You gave), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) σου (of You) τετήρηκαν (they have kept). ⁷ νῦν (Now) ἔγνωκαν (they have known) ὅτι (that) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (whatever) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), παρὰ (of) σοῦ (You) εἰσιν (are); ⁸ ὅτι (for) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) ἃ (that) ἔδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), δέδωκα (I have given) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔλαβον (received them) καὶ (and) ἔγνωσαν (knew) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὅτι (that) παρὰ (from) σοῦ (You) ἐξῆλθον (I came forth); καὶ (and) ἐπίστευσαν (they believed) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) περὶ (concerning) αὐτῶν (them) ἐρωτῶ (am praying). οὐ (Not) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐρωτῶ (do I pray), ἀλλὰ (but) περὶ (concerning) ὧν (those whom) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), ὅτι (for) σοί (Yours) εἰσιν (they are). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) τὰ (things) ἐμὰ (of mine) πάντα (all), σά (Yours) ἐστιν (are); καὶ (and) τὰ (-) σὰ (Yours), ἐμά (Mine); καὶ (and) δεδόξασμαι (I have been glorified) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them). ¹¹ καὶ (And) οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰμὶ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), καὶ (and yet) αὐτοὶ (themselves) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) εἰσίν (they are), κἀγὼ (and I) πρὸς (to) σὲ (You) ἔρχομαι (am coming). Πάτερ (Father) ἅγιε (Holy), τήρησον (keep) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You), ᾧ (which) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), ἵνα (that) ὦσιν (they may be) ἓν (one) καθὼς (as) ἡμεῖς (we are). ¹² ὅτε (When) ἤμην (I was) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them), ἐγὼ (I) ἐτήρουν (was keeping) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You), ᾧ (which) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me). καὶ (And) ἐφύλαξα (I guarded them), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (none) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀπώλετο (has perished), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) τῆς (-) ἀπωλείας (of destruction), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled). ¹³ Νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) πρὸς (to) σὲ (You) ἔρχομαι (I am coming); καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (I speak) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἵνα (so that) ἔχωσιν (they may have) τὴν (-) χαρὰν (joy) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (My) πεπληρωμένην (fulfilled) ἐν (within) ἑαυτοῖς (them). ¹⁴ ἐγὼ (I) δέδωκα (have given) αὐτοῖς (them) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) σου (of You), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ἐμίσησεν (hated) αὐτούς (them), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (they are) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), καθὼς (even as) ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world). ¹⁵ Οὐκ (Not) ἐρωτῶ (I do ask) ἵνα (that) ἄρῃς (You should take) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) τηρήσῃς (You should keep) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil). ¹⁶ ἐκ (Of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (they are), καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world). ¹⁷ ἁγίασον (Sanctify) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth); ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὁ (-) σὸς (of You) ἀλήθειά (truth) ἐστιν (is). ¹⁸ καθὼς (As) ἐμὲ (Me) ἀπέστειλας (You sent) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), κἀγὼ (I also) ἀπέστειλα (sent) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world); ¹⁹ καὶ (and) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἐγὼ (I) ἁγιάζω (sanctify) ἐμαυτόν (Myself), ἵνα (that) ὦσιν (may be) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) ἡγιασμένοι (sanctified) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). ²⁰ Οὐ (Not) περὶ (for) τούτων (these) δὲ (however) ἐρωτῶ (do I ask) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) περὶ (for) τῶν (those) πιστευόντων (believing) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), ²¹ ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) ἓν (one) ὦσιν (may be), καθὼς (as) σύ (You), πάτερ* (Father), ἐν (are in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) σοί (You), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (Us) ὦσιν (may be), ἵνα (that) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) πιστεύῃ (may believe) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent). ²² Κἀγὼ (And I) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) ἣν (which) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), δέδωκα (have given) αὐτοῖς (them), ἵνα (so that) ὦσιν (they may be) ἓν (one), καθὼς (as) ἡμεῖς (We) ἕν (are one) — ²³ ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) σὺ (You) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me) — ἵνα (that) ὦσιν (they may be) τετελειωμένοι (perfected) εἰς (in) ἕν (unity), ἵνα (so that) γινώσκῃ (may know) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent) καὶ (and) ἠγάπησας (loved) αὐτοὺς (them) καθὼς (even as) ἐμὲ (Me) ἠγάπησας (You loved). ²⁴ Πάτερ* (Father), ὃ (those whom) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), θέλω (I desire) ἵνα (that) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), κἀκεῖνοι (they also) ὦσιν (may be) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me), ἵνα (that) θεωρῶσιν (they may behold) τὴν (-) δόξαν (glory) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (My), ἣν (that) δέδωκάς (You gave) μοι (Me) ὅτι (because) ἠγάπησάς (You loved) με (Me) πρὸ (before) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world). ²⁵ Πάτερ* (Father) δίκαιε (righteous), καὶ (although) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) σε (You) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (has known), ἐγὼ (I) δέ (now) σε (You) ἔγνων (have known), καὶ (and) οὗτοι (these) ἔγνωσαν (have known) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent). ²⁶ καὶ (And) ἐγνώρισα (I made known) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) σου (of You), καὶ (and) γνωρίσω (will make it known), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) ἣν (with which) ἠγάπησάς (You loved) με (Me) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them) ᾖ (may be), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them).”
