John 4:16-16:33

Matthew(i) 16 Iesus sayd vnto hyr. Go and call thy husbande, and come hyther. 17 The woman aunswered and sayde to him: I haue no husbande. 18 Iesus sayde to hyr, Thou hast well sayed, I haue no husbande. For thou haste had fyue husbandes and he whome thou nowe haste is not thy husbande. That saydest thou trulye. 19 The woman sayd vnto him: Syr I perceiue that thou art a prophete. 20 Oure fathers worshipped in this mountayne: and ye saye that in Hyerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Iesus sayd vnto hyr: woman beleue me, the houre cometh, when ye shal neyther in this mountayne, nor yet at Hierusalem worshyppe the father. 22 Ye worshype, ye wote not what: we knowe what we worshype. For saluation cometh of the Iewes. 23 But the houre cometh and nowe is, when the true worshyppers shal worshyp the father in spyrite and in trueth. For verelye suche the father requireth to worshyp him. 24 God is a spyryte, and they that worshyp hym, must worshyp hym in spiryte and trueth. 25 The woman sayd vnto him: I wot well Messias shal come, whiche is called Christe. When he is come, he wyll tell vs all thinges. 26 Iesus sayd vnto hyr: I that speake vnto the am he. 27 And euen at that poynte, came hys disciples, & merueyled that he talketh with the woman. Yet no man said vnto him: what meanest thou, or why talkest thou with hyr? 28 The woman then left hyr waterpotte, and went hyr way into the citie, and sayed to the men. 29 Come se a man whiche told me all thynges that euer I dyd. Is not he Christ? 30 Then they went out of the cytye, and came vnto hym. 31 And in the meane while his disciples praied hym saying: Maister, eate. 32 He said vnto them: I haue meate to eate, that ye knowe not of. 33 Then saied the discyples betwene them selues: hath anye manne brought hym meate? 34 Iesus saied to them: my meate is to do the wil of him that sent me. And to fynishe his workes. 35 Saye not ye: there are yet foure monethes, and then cometh heruest? Behold I saye vnto you, lyfte vp youre eyes, and loke on the regyons: for they are whyte al ready vnto harueste. 36 And he that reapeth receyueth rewarde, and gathereth fruite vnto lyfe eternall: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth might reioyce together. 37 And herein is the sayinge true, that one soweth, and another reapeth. 38 I sente you to reape that wheron ye bestowed no laboure. Othere men laboured, and ye are entred into theyr laboures. 39 Manye of the Samarytanes of that citie beleued on hym for the sayinge of the woman, whyche testified, he tolde me all thynges that euer I did. 40 Then when the Samaritans were come vnto him they besought hym that he woulde tary with them. And he abode ther .ij. daies. 41 And manye more beleued because of his owne wordes, 42 & sayd vnto the woman. Now we beleue not because of thy saying. For we haue heard hym oureselues, & knowe that thys is euen in dede Christe the Sauioure of the worlde. 43 After .ij. daies he departed thence, and wente awaye into Galile. 44 And Iesus hym selfe testifyed, that a Prophet hath no honoure in hys own countrye. 45 Then assone as he was come into Galyle, the Galyleans receyued hym whych had sene al the thynges that he dyd at Hierusalem at the feaste. For they went also vnto the feaste daye. 46 And Iesus came againe into Cana of Galile: wher he turned water into wine. And there was a certayne ruler, whose sonne was sicke at Capernaum. 47 Assone as the same heard that Iesus was come out of Iury into Galile, he wente vnto hym, and besoughte hym, that he woulde descende and heale hys sonne: For he was euen ready to dye. 48 Then sayed Iesus vnto hym: except ye se sygnes and wonders ye can not beleue. 49 The ruler sayd vnto him: Syr come awaie or euer my chylde dye. 50 Iesus sayd vnto hym: Go thy waie, thy sonne liueth. And the man beleued the wordes that Iesus had spoken vnto hym, and went hys way. 51 And anone as he went on his waye, hys seruauntes mette hym and tolde hym sayinge, thy chylde lyueth. 52 Then enquered he of them the houre when he began to amende, and they saied vnto hym: yester daye the seuenth houre the feuer lefte hym. 53 And the father knewe that it was the same houre in whyche Iesus sayed vnto hym: Thy sonne lyueth. And he beleued and al his housholde. 54 This is againe the, seconde miracle, that Iesus dyd after he was come out of Iury into Galile. 5 1 After that there was a feast of the Iewes and Iesus went vp to Ierusalem. 2 And ther is at Ierusalem by the slaughterhouse, a pole called in the Ebrue toung Bethesda, hauing .v. porches, 3 in which lay a greate multitude of sycke folke, of blinde halt and withered, waitinge for the mouyng of the water. 4 For an angell went doune at a certaine ceason into the pole and troubled the water. Whosoeuer then fyrste after the steringe of the water, stepped in, was made whole of whatsoeuer disease he had. 5 And a certayne man was there whyche had ben diseased .xxxviij. yeares. 6 When Iesus sawe hym lye and knewe that he nowe longe tyme had bene diseased, he said vnto hym: Wylt thou be made whole? 7 The sicke man aunswered hym. Syr I haue no man when the water is troubled to put me into the pole. But in the meane time while I am about to come, another steppeth doune before me. 8 And Iesus sayde vnto him: ryse take vp thy bed, and walke. 9 And immediatly the man was made whole, and toke vp his bedde, and went. And the same day was the saboth daye. 10 The Iewes therfore sayd to him that was made whole it is the saboth day, it is not lawful for the to carye thy bed. 11 He answered them: he that made me whole, said vnto me: take vp thy bed, and get the hence. 12 Then axed they hym what man is that whiche saied vnto the, take vp thy bed & walke. 13 And he that was healed, wiste not who it was. For Iesus had gotten him selfe awaie, because that there was prease of people in the place. 14 And after that, Iesus found him in the temple & said vnto him: behold thou arte made whole, synne no more, lest a worsse thinge happen vnto the. 15 The man departed & told the Iewes that it was Iesus, which had made him whole. 16 And therfore the Iewes dyd persecute Iesus, and soughte the meanes to slea him, because he had done these thinges on the saboth daye. 17 And Iesus answered them: my father worketh hither to & I worke. 18 Therfore the Iewes sought the more to kill him not only because he had broken the saboth, but sayd also that God was hys father, and made hym selfe equal with God. 19 Then aunswered Iesus and sayed vnto them: verely verely, I say vnto you: the sonne can do nothinge of hym selfe, but that he seeth the father do. For whatsoeuer he doth, that doeth the sonne also. 20 For the father loueth the sonne, & sheweth hym all thinges, whatsoeuer he him selfe doeth. And he wyll shewe hym greater workes then these, because ye should maruaile. 21 For lykewyse as the father rayseth vp the dead, and quickeneth them: euen so the sonne quickeneth whom he wyll. 22 Neyther iudgeth the father anye man: but hath committed all iudgement vnto the sonne, 23 because that all men should honoure the sonne, euen as they honoured the father. He that honoureth not the sonne: the same honoureth not the father, which hath sent him. 24 Verely, verely I say vnto you he that heareth my wordes, and beleueth on him that sent me, hath euerlasting lyfe, & shal not come into damnacion: but is escaped from death vnto lyfe. 25 Verely verely, I saye vnto you: The tyme shall come, and nowe is, when the dead shall heare the voyce of the sonne of God. And they that heare shall lyue. 26 For as the father hath lyfe in him selfe, so lykewyse hath he geuen to the sonne to haue lyfe in him selfe, 27 and hath geuen him power also to iudge, in that he is the sonne of man. 28 Maruaile not at this, the houre shall come in the which all that are in the graues, shal heare his voice, 29 and shall come forth: they that haue done good, vnto the resurreccion of lyfe, and they that hath done euil, vnto the resurreccion of damnacion. 30 I can of myne owne selfe do nothinge at all. As I heare. I iudge: and my iudgement is iust, because I seke not mine owne wyll but the wyll of my father which hath sent me. 31 If I beare witnes of my selfe, my witnes is not true. 32 Ther is another that beareth witnes of me, and I am sure that the wytnes which he beareth of me, is true. 33 Ye sent vnto Iohn, and he bare witnes vnto the truth. 34 But I receiue not the recorde of man Neuerthelesse, these thinges I say that ye might be safe. 35 He was a burninge and a shyninge lyght and ye woulde for a season haue reioysed in his lyght: 36 But I haue greater witnes then the witnes of Iohn. For the workes which the father hath geuen me to fynyshe the same workes which I do, beare witnes of me that the father sent me. 37 And the father himselfe which hath sent me, beareth witnes of me. Ye haue not hearde his voice at anye tyme nor ye haue sene his shape: 38 therto his wordes haue ye not abydinge in you. For whom he hath sent, him ye beleue not. 39 Searche the sciptures, for in them ye thinke ye haue eternall lyfe: and they are they which testifye of me. 40 And yet wyll ye not come to me that ye might haue lyfe. 41 I receyue not prayse of men. 42 But I knowe you, that ye haue not the loue of God in you. 43 I am come in my fathers name, and ye receyue me not. If another shall come in his owne name, him wyll ye receyue. 44 Howe can ye beleue which receyue honoure one of another, and seke not the honoure that commeth of God onlye? 45 Do not thinke that I wyll accuse you to my father. There is one that accuseth you euen Moyses in whom ye truste. 46 For had ye beleued Moises ye would haue beleued me for, he wrote of me. 47 But seynge ye beleue not hys writting: how should ye beleue my wordes? 6 1 After these thynges Iesus went his way ouer the sea of Galyle, nye to a cytye called Tyberias. 2 And a great multitude folowed hym, because they had sene his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. 3 And Iesus went vp into a mountayne, and there he sate with his disciples. 4 And easter a feast of the Iewes was nye. 5 Then Iesus lift vp his eyes, and sawe a company come vnto him, and sayd vnto Phylip: whence shalt we bye bread that these might eate? 6 This he sayde to proue hym, for he him selfe knewe what he would do. 7 Philip aunswered him, two hondred peny worth of bread are not sufficient for them, that euerye man haue a litel. 8 Then sayde vnto hym one of his disciples, Andrew Simon Peters brother. 9 Ther is a lad here, which hath fyue barly loues and two fyshes: but what is that among so many? 10 And Iesus sayde: make the people sytte downe. There was much grasse in the place. And the men sate doune, in numbre, about fyue thousande. 11 And Iesus toke the bread and gaue thankes, and gaue to the disciples, and his disciples to them that were set doune. And likewise of the fyshes as much as they would. 12 When they had eaten ynough, he said vnto his disciples: gather vp the broken meate that remayneth: that nothinge be lost: 13 And they gathered it together and fylled twelue baskettes with the broken meate, of the fyue barly loues and two fyshes which broken meate remained vnto them that had eaten. 14 Then the men when they had sene the miracle that Iesus did, saide: this is of a truthe the prophete that shoulde come into the worlde. 15 When Iesus perceiued that they woulde come, & take him vp to make him king, he departed againe into a mountaine him selfe alone. 16 And when euen was come his disciples went vnto the sea 17 and entred into a shyppe and went ouer the sea vnto Capernaum. And anone it was darke, and Iesus was not come to them. 18 And the sea arose wt a great winde that blewe. 19 And when they had rowen about a .xxv. or a .xxx. furlonges, they sawe Iesus walke on the sea, and drawe nye vnto the shippe and they were afrayed. 20 And he sayde to them. It is I: be not afrayed. 21 Then would they haue receyued him into the shyppe, and the shyppe was by and by at the lande whither they wente. 22 The daye folowinge, the people which stode on the other syde of the sea, sawe that ther was none other shyp ther saue that one wherinto his disciples were entred and that Iesus went not in with his discyples into the shyp but that his disciples were gone awaye alone. 23 How be it ther came other shyppes from Tiberias nye vnto the place wher they eate bread when the Lorde hath blessed. 24 Then when the people sawe that Iesus was not there neyther his disciples, they also toke shyppinge and came to Capernaum sekinge for Iesus. 25 And when they had found him on the other syde of the sea, they sayde vnto hym: Rabbi when camest thou hither? 26 Iesus aunswered them and sayde verelye, verelye I say vnto you ye seke me, not because ye sawe the miracles, but because ye eate of the loues, and were fylled. 27 Laboure not for the meate which perysheth, but for the meate that endureth vnto euerlasting lyfe, which meate the sonne of man shall geue vnto you. For hym hath God the father sealed. 28 Then sayde they vnto him: what shall we do that we might worke the workes of God? 29 Iesus aunswered and saide vnto them: This is the worke of God, that ye beleue on him: whom he hath sent. 30 They said vnto him: what sygne shewest thou them that we may se and beleue the? What doest thou worke? 31 Our father did eate manna in the desert as it is written. He gaue them bread from heauen to eate. 32 Iesus sayde vnto them: verelye, verelye I say vnto you: Moyses gaue you not breade from heauen: but my father geueth you the true breade from heauen. 33 For the bread of God is he which commeth doune from heauen, and geueth lyfe vnto the worlde. 34 Then sayde they vnto hym: Lord, euermore geue vs this breade. 35 And Iesus sayde vnto them: I am that breade of lyfe. He that commeth to me, shall not honger: and he that beleueth on me shall not thurste. 36 But I saye vnto you: that ye haue sene me, and yet beleue not. 37 All that the father geueth me shall come to me, and him that cometh to me, I cast not awaye. 38 For I came doune from heauen: not to do myne owne wyll, but his wyll which hath sent me. 39 And this is the fathers wyll which hath sent me, that of all whiche hath geuen me, I shoulde loose nothinge: but shoulde rayse it vp agayne at the laste daye. 40 And this is the wyll of him that sent me: that euerye man which seeth the sonne and beleueth on him haue euerlasting lyfe. And I wyll rayse him vp at the laste daye. 41 The Iewes then murmured at him, because he sayd: I am that bread which is come doune from heauen. 42 And they sayde: Is not this Iesus the sonne of Ioseph, whose father and mother we knowe? Howe is it then that he saieth: I came doune from heauen? 43 Iesus aunswered and saide vnto them. Murmure not amonge your selues. 44 No man can come to me: except the father which hath sent me drawe him. And I wyll rayse him vp at the laste day. 45 It is written in the prophetes: that they shalbe al taught of God. Euery man therfore thath hath heard and hath learned of the father commeth vnto me. 46 Not that anye man hath sene the father, saue which is of God, the same hath sene the father. 47 Verely, verelye, I say vnto you, he that beleueth on me, hath euerlasting lyfe 48 I am that bread of lyfe. 49 Youre fathers did eate Manna in the wyldernes and are dead. 50 This is that bread which commeth from heauen that he which eateth of it, shoulde also not dye. 51 I am that lyuinge bread: which came doune from heauen. If any man eate of this bread, he shall lyue for euer. And the bread that I wyll geue is my flesh, which I will geue for the life of the worlde. 52 And the Iewes stroue amonge them selues saiynge: How can this felowe geue vs his flesh to eate? 53 Then Iesus saide to them. Verely, verely, I say vnto you: excepte ye eate the fleshe of the sonne of man and drinke his bloude, ye shall not haue lyue in you. 54 Whosoeuer eateth my flesh, and drinketh my bloude, hath eternal lyfe: and I wyll rayse him vp at the laste day. 55 For my flesh is meate in dede, and my bloude is drinke in dede. 56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my bloude, dwelt in me and I in him. 57 As the liuinge father hath sent me, euen so lyue I by my father, and he that eateth me shall lyue by me. 58 This is the bread which came from heauen: not as your fathers haue eaten Manna and are dead. He that eateth of this breade, shall lyue euer. 59 These thinges sayed he in the synagoge as he taught in Capernaum. 60 Many therfore of his disciples, when they had hearde this, sayd this is anhearde saiynge: who can abide the hearinge of it? 61 Iesus knewe in him selfe, that his disciples murmured at it, and sayde vnto them: Doth this offende you? 62 What and if ye shall se the sonne of man ascende vp wher he was before? 63 It is the spirite that quickeneth, the flesh proffetteth nothing. The wordes that I speake vnto you, are spirite and lyfe. 64 But there are some of you that beleue not. For Iesus knewe from the beginninge, which they were that beleued not, and wo should betraye him. 65 And he sayde: therfore said I vnto you that no man cometh vnto me, except it were geuen vnto him of my father. 66 From that tyme manye of his discyples wente backe, and walked no more with him. 67 Then sayde Iesus to the twelue: will ye also go awaye? 68 Then Symon Peter aunswered: Maister to whom shall we go? Thou hast the wordes of eternall lyfe, 69 and we beleue and knowe thou arte Christe the sonne of the lyuinge God. 70 Iesus aunswered them: Haue not I chosen you twelue, and yet one of you is the deuyll? 71 He spake it of Iudas Iscarioth the sonne of Simon: For he it was that shoulde betraye him, and was one of the twelue. 7 1 After that Iesus went about into Galile, and would not go about in Iewry, for the Iewes sought to kyll him. 2 The Iewes tabernacle feaste was at hande. 3 His brethren therfore sayde vnto hym: get the hence, & go into Iewry that thy disciples maye se thy workes that thou doest. 4 For ther is no man that doeth any thing secretly, and he him selfe seketh to be knowen openly. If thou do such thinges shew thy selfe to the worlde. 5 For as yet his brethren beleued not in him. 6 Then Iesus sayde vnto them: My tyme is not yet come, your tyme is alway redye. 7 The worlde can not hate you. But me it hateth: because I testifye of it, that the workes of it are euyll. 8 Go ye vp vnto this feaste, I wyl not go yet vnto this feaste for my tyme is not yet full come. 9 These wordes he sayde vnto them, and abode styll in Galyle. 10 But assone as his brethren were gone vp, he wente also vp vnto the feast: not openly, but as it were priuelye. 11 Then sought him the Iewes at the feaste, and sayde: where is he? 12 And much murmuringe was ther of him amonge the people. Some sayde: He is good. Other sayd nay, but he deceiued the people. 13 How beit no man spake openlye of him, for feare of the Iewes. 14 In the middes of the feaste, Iesus wente vp into the temple and taught 15 And the Iewes maruayled saiynge: How knoweth he the scriptures, seiyng that he neuer learned? 16 Iesus aunswered them, and sayde: My doctryne is not myne: but his that sent me: 17 If any man wil do his wyll he shall knowe of the doctryne, whither it be of God, or whither I speake of my selfe. 18 He that speaketh of him selfe, seketh his owne prayse. But he that seketh his prayse that sent him, the same is true and no vnrightuousnes is in him. 19 Dyd not Moises geue you a lawe, and yet none of you kepeth the lawe? Why go ye about to kill me? 20 The people aunswered and sayde: thou hast the deuyl: who goeth about to kyll the? 21 Iesus aunswereth and saide to them: I haue done one worke, and ye all maruayle. 22 Moyses therfore gaue vnto you circuncisyon: not because it is of Moises, but of the fathers. And yet ye on the Saboth daye, circumcyse a man. 23 If a man on the Saboth daye receyue circumcisyon without breakinge of the lawe of Moyses: disdayne ye at me because I haue made a man euery whit whole on the Saboth daye? 24 Iudge not after the vtter aperaunce: but iudge rightuouse iudgemente. 25 Then sayde some of them of Hierusalem: is not this he whom they go aboute to kyll? 26 Beholde he speaketh boldly, & they say nothinge to him: Do the rulers knowe in dede that this is very Christe? 27 Howe be it we knowe this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man shall knowe whence he is. 28 Then cried Iesus in the temple as he taught saiyng: ye knowe me, and whence I am ye knowe. And yet I am not come of my selfe, but he that sent me is true, whom ye knowe not. 29 I knowe hym: for I am of hym, and he hath sent me. 30 Then they sought to take hym: but no man layde handes on hym, because his tyme was not yet come. 31 Many of the people beleued on him and sayd: when Christe cometh wyl he do mo miracles then this man hath done? 32 The pharyseis hearde that the people murmured such thinges about him. Wherfore the phariseis and hye priestes sente ministers forth to take him. 33 Then sayde Iesus vnto them: Yet am I a lytle while with you, and then go I vnto hym that sent me. 34 Ye shall seke, and shal not fynde me: and where I am, thither can ye not come. 35 Then sayd the Iewes amonge them selues: whither wyll he go, that we shall not fynde him? Wyll he go amonge the gentyls which are scattered all abrode and teache the gentyls: 36 What maner of saiynge is this that he saide: ye shall seke me, and shall not fynde me: and wher I am thither can ye not come? 37 In the last day, that great daye of the feaste Iesus stode and cried saiynge: If a man thirste, let him come vnto me and drinke. 38 He that beleueth on me, as sayeth the scripture, out of hys bellye shall flowe riuers of water of lyfe. 39 This spake he of the spirite which they that beleueth on him, shoulde receyue. For the holye ghost was not yet because that Iesus was not yet gloryfyed. 40 Manye of the people, when they hearde that saiynge sayed: of a truthe this is a Prophete, 41 other sayeth: this is Christe, some saide: shal Christ come out of Galile? 42 Saieth not the scriptuture that Christ shal come of the sede of Dauid, & out of the toune of Bethleem wher Dauid was? 43 So was there dissencydu among the people aboute hym? 44 And some of them woulde haue taken him: but no man layed handes on hym. 45 Then came the ministers to the hye priestes and Phariseis. And they sayd vnto them: why haue ye not brought hym? 46 The seruauntes aunswered: neuer man spake as thys man doth. 47 Then aunswered them the Phariseis: are ye also deceyued? 48 Doth anye of the rulers or the Phariseis beleue on hym? 49 But the commune people whiche know not the lawe, are cursed. 50 Nicodemus sayed vnto them. He that came to Iesus by night, and was one of them. 51 Doeth our lawe iudge anye man, before it heare him and knowe what he hath done? 52 They aunswered and sayed vnto hym: art thou also of Galile? Searche and loke, for oute of Galile aryseth no Prophete. 53 And euery man wente vnto hys owne house. 8 1 And Iesus wente vnto mounte Oliuete, 2 and earlye in the mornynge came agayne into the temple, and all the people came vnto him, and sate doune & taught them. 3 And the Scribes and Phariseis brought vnto hym a woman taken in aduoutrye, and set her in the middest, 4 and sayed vnto hym: Mayster, thys woman was taken in aduoutrye, euen as the dede was a doynge. 5 Moyses in the lawe commaunded vs that suche shoulde be stoned. What sayest thou therfore? 6 And this they sayed to tempte hym, that they myghte haue, whereof to accuse hym. Iesus stouped doune, and with hys fynger wrote on the ground. 7 And whyle they continued axynge hym, he lyfte hym selfe vp, and sayd vnto them: let hym that is amonge you without synne caste the fyrst stone at her. 8 And agayne he stouped doune, and wrote on the grounde. 9 And assone as they hearde that, they went out one by one, the eldest fyrst. And Iesu was left alone, and the woman standynge in the myddes. 10 When Iesus had lyft vp hym self agayn and sawe no man but the woman, he sayd to her. Woman where are those thyne accusers? Hath no man condemned the? 11 She sayed no man Lorde. And Iesus sayde: Neyther do I condempne the. Go, and synne no more. 12 Then spake Iesus agayne vnto them, saiynge. I am the lyghte of the worlde. He that foloweth me, shall not walke in darkenes: but shall haue the lyghte of lyfe. 13 The Phariseis sayde vnto hym: thou bearest recorde of thy selfe thy recorde is not true. 14 Iesus aunswered and sayed vnto them: though I beare recorde of my selfe, yet my recorde is true: for I know whence I came, and whether I go. But ye can not tel, whence I came, and whither I go. 15 Ye iudge after the flesh. I iudge no man. 16 Thoughe I iudge, yet is my iudgement true. For I am not alone: but I and the father that sent me. 17 It is also written in your lawe, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am one that beare witnes of my selfe, and the father that sent me beareth witnes of me. 19 Then sayde they vnto hym: where is thy father? Iesus aunswered: ye neyther knowe me nor yet my father. Yf ye had knowen me, ye shoulde haue knowen my father also. 20 These wordes spake Iesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple, and no man layde handes on hym, for hys tyme was not yet come. 21 Then sayde Iesus agayne vnto them. I go my waye, and ye shall seke me, & shall dye in youre synnes. Whether I go, thither can ye not come. 22 Then sayde the Iewes: will he kyll hym selfe, because he sayth: whether I go thyther can ye not come? 23 And he sayde to them: ye are from beneth. I am from aboue. Ye are of thys worlde. I am not of thys worlde. 24 I sayd therfore vnto you, that ye shall dye in your synnes. For except ye beleue that I am he, ye shall dye in youre synnes. 25 Then sayed they vnto hym, who arte thou? And Iesus sayde vnto them: Euen the very same thynge that I saye vnto you, 26 I haue manye thynges to saye, and to iudge of you: but he that sent me is true. And I speake in the worlde, those thinges which I haue hearde of hym. 27 Howe be it, they vnderstode not that he spake of hys father. 28 Then sayde Iesus vnto them: when ye haue lyfte vp an hye the sonne of man, then shall ye knowe, that I am he, and that I do nothynge of my self: but as my father hath taught me, euen so I speake: 29 and he that sente me, is with me. The father hath not left me alone, for I do alwayes those thynges, that please him. 30 As he spake these wordes, many beleued on hym. Then sayde Iesus to those Iewes whiche beleued on hym. 31 Yf ye continue in my wordes: then are ye my very discyples, 32 and shal know the truth, and the truthe shall make you free. 33 They aunswered hym. We be Abrahams seede, and were neuer bonde to any man: why sayest thou then: ye shalbe made, fre? 34 Iesus aunswered them: verelye, verelye I say vnto you, that whosoeuer committeth synne 35 is the seruaunte of synne. And the seruaunte abydeth not in the house for euer. 36 But the sonne abydeth euer. Yf the sonne therfore shal make you fre, then are ye free in dede. 37 I knowe that ye are Abrahams sede, but ye seke meanes to kyl me, because my sayinges haue no place in you. 38 I speake that I haue sene with my father: and ye do that which ye haue sene with youre father. 39 They aunswered, & sayde vnto hym. Abraham is oure father. Iesus sayde vnto them: yf ye were Abrahams chyldren, ye woulde do the dedes of Abraham. 40 But nowe ye go about to kyll me, a man that haue tolde you the truthe whiche I haue hearde of God, thys dyd not Abraham, 41 ye do the dedes of your father. Then sayde they to him: we were not borne of fornicion. We haue one father, whiche is God. 42 Iesus sayde vnto them: yf God were youre father, then woulde ye loue me. For I proceaded forth, and come from God. Neyther came I of my selfe, but he sente me. 43 Why do ye not knowe my speache? Euen because ye cannot abyde the hearynge of my wordes. 44 Ye are of youre father the deuyl, and the lustes of your father ye wyll do. He was a murtherer from the begynnyng, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truthe in hym. When he speaketh a lye, then speaketh he of hys owne. For he is a lyar, and the father therof. 45 And because I tell you the truthe, therfore ye beleue me not. 46 Which of you can rebuke me of synne? Yf I saye the truth, why do not ye beleue me? 47 He that is of God, heareth Goddes wordes. Ye therfor heare them not, because ye, are not of God. 48 Then answered the Iewes, and sayd vnto hym: Saye we not well that thou arte a Samaritane, and hast the deuyll? 49 Iesus aunswered: I haue not the deuyll: but I honoure my father, & ye haue dishonoured me. 50 I seke not myne owne prayse: but there is one that seketh, and iudgeth. 51 Verely verely I saye vnto you, yf a man kepe my saiynges, he shall neuer she death. 52 Then sayed the Iewes to hym. Nowe knowe we that thou haste the deuyll. Abraham is dead, and also the Prophetes, and yet thou sayest, yf a man kepe my saiynges he shall neuer tast of death. 53 Art thou greater then oure father Abraham which is dead? And the Prophetes are dead: Whome makest thou thy selfe? 54 Iesus answered. Yf I honoure my selfe, myne honoure is nothynge worthe. It is my father, that honoureth me, which you saye is youre God, 55 and ye haue not knowen hym: but I knowe hym, And yf I shoulde saye: I knowe hym not, I shoulde be a lyer lyke vnto you. But I knowe hym, and kepe hys saiynge. 56 Your father Abraham was glad to se my daye and he sawe it, and reioyced. 57 Then sayed the Iewes vnto hym: thou arte not yet .l. yeares olde, and hast thou sene Abraham? 58 Iesus said vnto them: Verelye verely I saye vnto you: yer Abraham was I am. 59 Then toke they vp stones to caste at hym. But Iesus hyd him self and wente oute of the temple. 9 1 And as Iesus passed by, he saw a man which was blynde from hys byrthe. 2 And his disciples axed hym: Mayster, who dyd synne: thys man or his father and mother: that he was borne blynd? 3 Iesus aunswered: Neyther hath thys man synned nor yet hys father and mother: but that the workes of God shoulde be shewed on him. 4 I must work the workes of hym that sente me, whyle it is daye. The nyghte cometh, when no man can worke. 5 As longe as I am in the worlde, I am the lyght of the worlde. 6 Assone as he had thus spoken; he spatte on the grounde, and made claye of the spetle, and rubbed the claye on the eyes of the blynd, 7 and sayed vnto hym: Go, washe the in the pole of Syloe, whiche by interpretacyon, signifyeth sente. He went hys waye, and washed & came agayne, sayng: 8 The neyghboures and they that had sene him before, how that he was a beggar, sayed: is not thys he that satte & begged. 9 Some sayed: this is he. Other saied: he is like hym. But he hym selfe sayd: I am euen he. 10 They sayed vnto hym: Howe are thyne eyes opened then? 11 He aunswered and sayde. The man that is called Iesus, made claye, & anoynted myne eyes, and sayed vnto me: Go to the pole Siloe, and washe. And I wente and washed & receyued my syghte. 12 They sayde vnto him: where is he? He sayde: I can not tell. 13 Then brought they to the Pharises, hym that a litle before was blynde: 14 for it was the Saboth day, when Iesus made the claye and opened hys eyes. 15 Then agayne the Pharises also axed him, how he had receyued his sight. He sayed vnto them: He put claye vpon my eyes, and I washed and do se. 16 Then sayd some of the Phariseis: thys man is not of God, because he kepeth not the Saboth daye. Other sayed: howe can a man that is a synner, do such miracles? And there was stryfe among them. 17 Then spake they vnto the blynde agayne. What saiest thou of hym, because he hath opened thyne eyes? And he sayed: He is a Prophete. 18 But the Iewes dyd not beleue on the felowe, howe that he was blynde and receyued hys sighte, vntyll they had called the father & mother of hym that had receyued his sighte. 19 And they axed them, saiynge: Is thys youre sonne, whom ye say was borne blynde? How doth he now se then? 20 His father and mother aunswered them, and sayed: We wote well that thys is oure sonne, & that he was borne blind, 21 but by what meanes he now seeth, that can we not tell, or who hath opened hys eyes, can we not tell. He is olde ynoughe, axe him, let hym answere for hym self. 22 Such wordes spake his father and mother, because they feared the Iewes. For the Iewes had conspyred al ready, that yf any man dyd confesse that he was Christe, he shoulde be excommunicate oute of the synagoge, 23 therfore sayd hys father & mother: he is olde ynough, axe hym. 24 Then agayne called they the man that was the blynde, & sayd vnto him: Geue God the prayse we knowe that this man is a synner. 25 He aunswered and sayde: Whither he be a synner or no. I can not tell, one thyng I am sure of: that I was blynde, and now I se. 26 Then sayd they to hym agayne: What dyd he to the? Howe opened he thyne eyes? 27 He aunswered them: I tolde you per whyle, and ye dyd not heare. Wherfore woulde ye heare it agayne? wyl ye also be hys discyples? 28 Then rated they him, & sayde: thou arte hys disciple: we be Moyses discyples. 29 We are sure that God spake wyth Moyses, thys felowe we knowe not from whence he is. 30 The man aunswered, and sayd vnto them: Thys is a merueylous thynge, that ye wote not whence he is, seyng he hath opened myne eyes. 31 For we be sure that God heareth not synners. But yf any man be a worshypper of God, and do hys wyl, hym heareth he. 32 Sence the worlde began: was it not hearde that any man opened the eies of one that was borne blynde. 33 If thys man were not of God, he coulde haue done nothynge. 34 They answered, and sayde vnto hym: thou arte all together borne in synne, and doest thou teach vs? And they cast hym oute. 35 Iesus hearde, that they had excommunicat hym, he sayde vnto hym: doest thou beleue on the sonne of God? 36 He aunswered, and sayde: Who is it Lord that I myght beleue on him? 37 And Iesus sayde vnto hym: Thou haste sene hym, and he it is that talked with the. 38 And he sayde: Lorde I beleue & worshypped hym. 39 Iesus sayed: I am come vnto iudgement into this worlde, that they which se not myght se, and they which se, myght be made blynd. 40 And some of the Pharises whiche were with him, hearde these wordes, and sayde vnto hym: are we then blynde? 41 Iesus sayde vnto them: yf ye were blynde, ye shoulde haue no synne. But nowe ye saye: we se, therfor your synne remayneth. 10 1 Verelye verelye I saye vnto you: he that entreth not in by the dore, into the shepe folde: but climmeth vp some other waye, the same is a thefe and a robber. 2 He that goeth in by the dore, is the shepeherde of the shepe, 3 to him the porter openeth, and the shepe heare hys voyce, and he calleth hys owne shepe by name, and leadeth them oute. 4 And when he hath sente forth hys owne shepe, he goeth before them, and the shepe folowe hym, for they knowe hys voyce. 5 A straunger they wyll not folowe, but wyll flye from hym, for they know not the voyce of straungers. 6 Thys similitude spake Iesus vnto them: But they vnderstode not what thynges they were whiche he spake vnto them. 7 Then Iesus sayed vnto them agayne Verelye I saye vnto you: I am the dore of the shepe. 8 Al, euen as manye as came before me, are theues and robbers: but the shepe dyd not heare them. 9 I am the dore: by me yf any man enter in, he shalbe safe, and shall go in & oute, and fynde pasture. 10 The thefe cometh not, but for to steale, kyll, and destroye. I am come, that they might haue lyfe, and haue it more aboundauntlye. 11 I am the good shepeherde. The good shepe herde geueth hys lyfe for the shepe. 12 An hyred, seruaunte, which is not the shepeherde, neyther the shepe are hys own, seeth the wolfe commynge, and leaueth the shepe, and fleeth, and the wolfe catcheth them, & scatiereth the shepe. 13 The hyred seruaunte fleeth, because he is an hyred seruaunte, and careth not for the shepe. 14 I am that good shepeherde, and knowe myne and am knowen of myne. 15 As my father knoweth me, euen so knowe I my father. And I geue my lyfe for the shepe: 16 and other shepe I haue whiche are not of thys folde. Them also muste I brynge that they maye heare my voyce, and that there maye be one flocke, and one shepeherde. 17 Therfore doth my father loue me, because I put my lyfe from me, that I myght take it agayne. 18 Noman taketh it from me, but I put it awaye of my selfe. I haue power to put it from me, and haue power to take it agayne. Thys commaundemente haue I receyued of my father. 19 And there was a dissencyon agayne among the Iewes for these saiynges, 20 & many of them sayd: he hath the deuil, and is madde: why heare ye hym? 21 Other sayd: these are not the wordes of hym that hath the deuyll. Can the deuyll open the eyes of the blynde? 22 And it was at Hierusalem the feaste of the dedicacion of the temple, and it was wynter, 23 & Iesus walked in Solomons porche. 24 Then came the Iewes rounde about hym, & sayed vnto hym: Howe longe dost thou make vs doubte? Yf thou be Christe, tell vs playnely. 25 Iesus aunswered them: I tolde you, and ye beleue not. The workes that I do in my fathers name, then beare witnes of me. 26 But ye beleue not because ye are not of my shepe. As I said vnto you: 27 my shepe heare my voice, & I know them, and they folowe me, 28 and I geue vnto them eternall lyfe, and they shall neuer perish neyther shall any man plucke them out of my hande. 29 My father whiche gaue them me, is greater then all, and no man is able to take them out of my fathers hande. 30 And I and my father are one. 31 Then the Iewes agayne toke vp stones to stone hym with all. 32 Iesus aunswered them: manye good workes haue I shewed you from my father: for whiche of them wyll ye stone me? 33 The Iewes aunswered him, saiynge: For thy good workes sake we stone the not, but for thy blasphemye, and because that thou beynge a man, makest thy selfe God. 34 Iesus aunswered them: is it not wrytten in youre lawe. I saye: ye are Goddes? 35 Yf he called them Goddes vnto whom the worde of God was spoken (& the scripture can not be broken) 36 saye ye then to hym, whom the father hath sanctifyed, & sent into the worlde, thou blasphemest, because I sayed. I am the sonne of God? 37 yf I do not the workes of my father, beleue me not. 38 But yf I do: then thoughe ye beleue not me, yet beleue the workes, that ye maye knowe and beleue, that the father is in me, and I in hym. 39 Agayne they went about to take hym: but he escaped out of theyr handes, 40 and went awaye agayne beyonde Iordan, into the place where Iohn before had baptysed, and there abode. 41 And manye resorted vnto hym, & sayed: Iohn dyd no myracle, but all thynges that Iohn spake of thys man, are true. 42 And manye beleued on hym there. 11 1 A certayne man was sicke, named Lazarus of Bethania, the toune of Marye and her syster Martha. 2 It was that Marye whiche annoynted Iesus with oyntment and wyped hys fete with her heyre, whose brother Lazarus was sicke, 3 and hys systers sente vnto hym, saiynge: Lorde, beholde, he whome thou louest, is sicke. 4 When Iesus hearde, that he sayed: this infirmitie is not vnto death, but for the laude of God that the sonne of God myght be praysed by the reason of it. 5 Iesus loued Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 Then after he had hearde that he was sicke, yet abode he two dayes styll in the same place, where he was. 7 Then after that sayde he to hys disciples: Let vs go into Iewry agayne. 8 His discyples sayde vnto hym: Mayster, the Iewes latelye sought meanes to stone the, and wylt thou go thyther agayne? 9 Iesus aunswered: are there not .xij. houres in the daye of a man walke in the daye, he stombleth not, because he seeth the lyght of thys world. 10 But yf a man walke in the nyght, he stombleth, because there is no lyght in him. 11 This sayed he, and after that, he sayed vnto them: oure frende Lazarus slepeth but I go to wake him out of slepe. 12 Then sayed hys discyples: Lorde yf he slepe, he shall do well ynough. 13 Howe be it Iesus spake of hys death: but they thought that he had spoken of the naturall slepe. 14 Then sayd Iesus vnto them plainly: Lazarus is dead, 15 and I am glad for youre sakes, that I was not there, because ye may beleue. Neuerthelesse let vs go vnto him. 16 Then sayde Thomas whiche is called Dydymus, vnto the discyples: Let vs also go, that we maye dye with hym. 17 Then wente Iesus, and founde that he had lyen in hys graue foure dayes already. 18 Bethanye was nye vnto Hierusalem aboute .xv. furlonges of, 19 and manye of the Iewes were come to Martha and Marye to comforte them ouer theyr brother. 20 Martha assone as she hearde that Iesus was commynge, went, and met hym: but Mary sat styll in the house. 21 Then sayde Martha vnto Iesus: Lorde, yf thou haddest bene here, my brother had not ben dead: 22 but neuerthelesse, I know that whatsoeuer thou axest of God, God wyl geue it the. 23 Iesus sayde vnto her: thy brother shall ryse agayne. 24 Martha sayed vnto him: I knowe that he shall ryse agayne in the resurreccyon at the laste daye. 25 Iesus sayed vnto her: I am the resurreccion and the lyfe. He that beleueth on me, ye though he were dead, yet shall he lyue. 26 And whosoeuer lyueth, and beleueth on me, shall neuer dye. Beleuest thou thys? 27 She sayd vnto hym: ye Lorde I beleue that thou arte Christe the sonne of God, which should come into the worlde. 28 And assone as she had so sayd, she went her waye, and called Marye her syster secretelye, saiynge: The mayster is come, and calleth for the. 29 And she assone as she hearde that, arose quickly, and came vnto hym. 30 Iesus was not yet come into the toune, but was in the place where Martha met hym. 31 The Iewes then which were with her in the house and comforted her, when they sawe Mary, that she arose vp hastely, and went out, and folowed her, saiynge: She goeth vnto the graue, to wepe there. 32 Then when Mary was come, where Iesus was, and sawe hym, she fell doune at hys fete, saiynge vnto hym: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here, my brother had not ben dead. 33 When Iesus sawe her wepe, and the Iewes also wepe which came with her, he groned in the spirite, and was troubled in hym self, 34 & sayd: Where haue ye layed hym? They sayde vnto hym: Lorde, come and se. 35 And Iesus wepte. 36 Then sayde the Iewes: Beholde, howe he loued him. 37 And some of them sayde: coulde not he which opened the eyes of the blynde, haue made also that thys man shoulde not haue dyed? 38 Iesus agayne groned in hym selfe, and came to the graue: it was a caue and a stone layde on it. 39 And Iesus sayde: take ye away the stone. Martha the syster of hym that was dead, said vnto him: Lorde by thys tyme he stinketh: for he hath bene dead four dayes. 40 Iesus sayed vnto her: Sayd I not vnto the, that yf thou dyddest beleue, thou shouldest se the glory of God. 41 Then they toke awaye the stone from that place where the dead was layde. And Iesus lyft vp hys eyes, and sayde: Father I thanke the because that thou haste hearde me. 42 I wote that thou hearest me alwayes: but because of the people that stande by, I sayed it, that they may beleue that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken: he cryed wt a loude voyce: Lazarus come forth. 44 And he that was dead, came forth, bounde hand and fote with graue boundes, and his face was bounde with a napkin. Iesus sayed vnto them, lowse him, and let hym go. 45 Then many of the Iewes which came to Marye, and had sene the thynges whiche Iesus dyd, beleued on hym. 46 But some of them went theyr wayes to the Pharises, and tolde them what Iesus had done. 47 Then gathered the hye Priestes and Pharyses a counsel and sayd: What do we? This man doth many myracles: 48 yf we let hym scape thus, all men wyll beleue on hym, & the Romaynes shall come and take away our countrey and the people. 49 And one of them named Cayphas which was the hye prieste that same yeare sayde vnto them: ye perceyue nothynge at all, nor yet consyder that 50 it is expedyent for vs, that one man dye for the people, & not that all the people peryshe. 51 Thys spake he not of hym selfe, but beynge hye Prieste that same yeare he prophesyed that Iesus shoulde dye for the people, 52 and not for the people only, but that he shoulde gather together in one the children of God which were scattered abrode. 53 From that daye forth they helde a counsell together, for to put hym to death. 54 Iesus therfore walked no more openlye amonge the Iewes, but went hys waye thence vnto a countrye nyghe to the wyldernes, into a cytye called Ephraim, & ther haunted wt his disciples. 55 And the Iewes Easter was nye at hande, and manye wente oute of the countrye vp to Hierusalem before the Easter, to purifie them selues. 56 Then soughte they for Iesus, and spake amonge them selues, as they stode in that temple: What thynke ye, seynge he commeth not to the feast 57 The hye priestes and Pharyseis had geuen a commaundement, that yf any man knewe, where he were, he shoulde shew it, that they myght take hym. 12 1 Then Iesus .vi. dayes before Easter, came to Bethanye where Lazarus was which was dead, and whom Iesus raysed from death. 2 There they made hym a supper, & Martha serued: but Lazarus was one of them that sate at the table with hym. 3 Then toke Mary a pounde of oyntment called Nardus, perfecte and precyous, and annoynted Iesus fete, and wepte hys fete with her heare, and the house was fylled wyth the sauoure of the oyntmente. 4 Then sayed one of hys disciples named Iudas Iscarioth Simons sonne. whiche afterwarde betrayed him: 5 why was not thys oyntment solde for thre .C. pens and geuen to the poore? 6 Thys sayed he, not that he cared for the poore, but because he was a thiefe, and kepte the bagge, and bare that whiche was geuen. 7 Then sayed Iesus Let her alone, agaynste the daye of my buriynge the kept it. 8 The poore alwayes shall ye haue with you, but me shall ye not alwayes haue. 9 Muche people of the Iewes had knoweledge that he was there, & they came not for Iesus sake onely, but that they myghte se Lazarus also whom he raysed from death: 10 The hye priestes therfore helde a counsel, that they myght put Lazarus to death also, 11 because that for hys sake many of the Iewes went away, and beleued on Iesus. 12 On the morowe muche people that were come to the feast, when they hearde that Iesus shoulde come to Hierusalem, 13 toke braunches of palme trees, and went and met hym, and cryed: Hosanna, blessed is he that in the name of the Lorde cometh kynge of Israell. 14 And Iesus gotte a yong asse, and sate theron, accordynge to that which was wrytten, 15 feare not doughter of Syon, beholde thy kynge cometh, sittynge on an asses colte. 16 These thinges vnderstode not hys discyples at the fyrst: but when Iesus was glorifyed, then remembred they that suche thynges were written of him, and that suche thynges they had done vnto hym. 17 The people that was with hym, when he called Lazarus out of hys graue, and raysed hym from death, bare recorde. 18 Therfore met hym the people, because they hearde that he had done suche a myracle. 19 The Phariseis therfore sayed amonge them selues: perceyue ye howe we preuayle nothing? beholde the worlde goeth awaye after hym. 20 There were certayne Grekes among them, that came to praye at the feaste: 21 the same came to Phylyppe which was of Bethsayda a citie in Galile, and desiered hym, saiynge: Syr we woulde fayne se Iesus. 22 Phylip came and told Andrewe. And agayne Andrewe and Philip tolde Iesus. 23 And Iesus aunswered them sayinge: The houre is come that the sonne of man must be glorifyed. 24 Verelye verelye I saye to you, excepte the wheate corne fall into the grounde and dye, it bydeth alone. If it dye, it bringeth forth much frute. 25 He that loueth hys lyfe, shall destroy it: and he that hateth hys lyfe in this world, shal kepe it vnto lyfe eternall. 26 If any man minister vnto me, let hym folowe me, and where I am, there shal also my minister be. And yf any man minister vnto me, hym wyll my father honoure. 27 Nowe is my soule troubled, and what shal I saye? Father delyuer me from thys houre: but therfore came I vnto thys houre. 28 Father, glorifye thy name. Then came there a voyce from heauen: I haue glorifyed it, and wil glorifye it agayne. 29 Then sayde the people that stode by, and hearde: it thoundreth, Other sayd an angell spake to him. 30 Iesus aunswered and sayed: thys voyce came, not because of me, but for your sakes. 31 Now is the iudgement of thys world: now shall the prince of thys worlde be caste oute. 32 And I, yf I were lyft vp from the earth, will drawe all men vnto me. 33 This sayde Iesus, signifyenge what death he shoulde dye. 34 The people aunswered hym: We haue hearde oute of the lawe, that Christe bydeth euer: and howe sayest thou then that the sonne of man muste be lyfte vp? who is that sonne of man? 35 Then Iesus sayed vnto them: yet a lyttell whyle is the lyght with you. Walke, whyle ye haue lyght, lest the darcknes come on you. He that walketh in the darcke, woteth not whether he goeth. 36 Whyle ye haue lyghte, beleue on the lyght, that ye maye be the chyldren of light. These thynges spake Iesus, and departed, and hyd hym selfe from them. 37 And though he had done so many myracles before them, yet beleued not they on hym, 38 that the saiynge of Esayas the Prophete myght be fulfylled, that he spake. Lorde, who shall beleue our saiyng? And to whome is the arme of the Lorde opened? 39 Therfore coulde they not beleue, because that Esayas sayth agayne: 40 he hath blynded theyr eyes and hardened theyr hertes, that they shoulde not se with theyr eyes, and vnderstand with theyr hertes, and shoulde be conuerted, and I shoulde heale them. 41 Such thynges said Esayas when he sawe hys glorye, and spake of hym. 42 Neuerthelesse among the chief rulers many beleued on hym. But because of that Pharyses they woulde not be a knowen of it, least they shoulde be excommunicate, 43 for they loued the prayse, that is geuen of men, more then the prayse that commeth of God. 44 And Iesus cryed and sayde: he that beleueth on me, beleueth not on me, but on hym that sente me. 45 And he that seeth me, seeth hym that sent me. 46 I am come a lyght into the worlde, that whosoeuer beleueth on me, shoulde not byde in darknes. 47 And yf anye man heare my wordes, & beleue not, I iudge him not. For I came not to iudge the worlde, but to saue the worlde. 48 He that refuseth me, and receiueth not my wordes, hath one that iudgeth hym. The wordes that I haue spoken, they shall iudge hym in the laste day. 49 For I haue not spoken of my selfe: but the father which sent me, he gaue me a commaundement what I shoulde say, & what I should speake. 50 And I knowe that thys commaundement is lyfe euerlasting. Whatsoeuer I speake therfore, euen as the father bade me, so I speake. 13 1 Before the feast of Easter when Iesus knew that hys houre was come, that he shulde depart oute of thys worlde vnto the father. When he loued his which were in the worlde, vnto the ende he loued them. 2 And when supper was ended, after that the deuyl had put in the herte of Iudas Iscarioth Simons sonne, to betraye hym. 3 Iesus knowyng that the father had geuen all thynges into hys handes, and that he was come from God, and went to God, 4 he rose from supper, and layde asyde hys vpper garmentes, & toke a towell, and gyrde hym selfe. 5 After that poured he water into a bason, & began to wash hys discyples fete, and to wype them wyth a towell, wherewith he was gyrde. 6 Then came he to Symon Peter. And Peter sayde vnto hym: Lorde shalt thou washe my fete? 7 Iesus aunswered, and sayed vnto him: what I do, thou wotest not nowe, but thou shalt knowe hereafter. 8 Peter sayed vnto him: thou shalt not washe my fete whyle the worlde standeth. Iesus aunswered hym: yf I washe the not, thou shalte haue no parte with me. 9 Simon Peter sayed vnto him: Lord not my fete onelye: but also my handes and my heade. 10 Iesus sayed vnto hym: he that is washed, neadeth not saue to washe hys fete, and is cleane euery whyt. And ye are cleane: but not al. 11 For he knewe hys betrayer. Therfore sayed he: ye are not all cleane. 12 After he had washed theyr fete, and receyued hys clothes, and was set doune agayne, he sayed vnto them. Wote ye what I haue done to you? 13 Ye call me mayster and Lorde, & ye saye well, for so am I. 14 Yf I then your lord and mayster haue washed your fete, ye also ought to wash one anothers fete. 15 For I haue geuen you an ensample, that ye shoulde do as I haue done to you. 16 Verelye verelye I say vnto you: the seruaunte is not greater then hys mayster, neyther the messenger greater then he that sent hym. 17 Yf ye vnderstande these thynges, happye are ye yf ye do then. 18 I speake not of you all. I knowe whome I haue chosen. But that the scripture myght be fulfylled, he that eateth bread with me hath lyft vp hys hele agaynst me. 19 Nowe tell I you before it come, that when it come to passe, ye myght beleue that I am he. 20 Verelye verelye I saye vnto you. He that receyueth whomesoeuer I sende, receyueth me. And he that receyueth me, receyueth him that sent me. 21 When Iesus had thus sayed, he was troubled in the spirite, and testifyed, saiynge: verelye verelye I saye vnto you, that one of you shall betraye me. 22 And then the disciples loked one on another, doubtinge of whom he spake. 23 There was one of hys disciples which leaned on Iesus bosome whome Iesus loued. 24 To him beckened Simon Peter that he shuld axe who it was, of whom he spake. 25 He then as he leaned on Iesus breste sayed vnto hym: Lorde who is it? 26 Iesus aunswered, he it is to whom I geue a sop, when I haue depte it. And he wet a soppe, and gaue it to Iudas Iscaryoth Simons sonne. 27 And after the sop Satan entred into hym. Then sayde Iesus vnto hym: that thou doest, do quickly. 28 That wist no man at the table, for what intent he spake vnto hym. 29 Some of them thought, because Iudas had the bagge, that Iesus had sayed vnto hym, bye those thinges that we haue nede of agaynst the feast: or that he shoulde geue some thyng to the poore. 30 Assone then as he had receyued the sop, he went immediatlye out. And it was nyght. 31 When he was gone oute, Iesus sayde: nowe is the sonne of man glorifyed. And God is glorified by hym. 32 Yf God be glorifyed by hym, God shall also glorifye hym in hym selfe, and shall strayghte waye glorifye hym. 33 Deare chyldren, yet a lytell whyle am I with you, ye shall seke me, and as I sayde vnto the Iewes: whyther I go, thyther can ye not come. Also to you saye I now: 34 A newe commaundement geue I vnto you, that ye loue together, as I haue loued you, that euen so ye loue one another. 35 By thys shall all men knowe that ye are my discyples, yf ye shall haue loue one to another. 36 Simon Peter sayed vnto hym. Lorde whyther goest thou? Iesus aunswered hym: Whether I go thou canste not folowe me now, but thou shalt folow me afterwarde. 37 Peter sayde vnto him: lorde, why can not I folowe the now? I wyll geue my lyfe for thy sake. 38 Iesus aunswered hym: wilte thou geue thy lyfe for my sake? Verelye verelye I saye vnto the, the cocke shall not crowe, tyll thou haue denyed me thryse. 14 1 And he sayd vnto hys disciples: Let not youre hertes be troubled. Beleue in God & beleue in me. 2 In my fathers house are manye mansyons. Yf it were not so, I wolde haue told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And yf I go to prepare a place for you, I wyl come agayne, and receyue you euen vnto my self, that wher I am, there may ye be also. 4 And whyther I go, ye knowe, and the waye ye knowe. 5 Thomas sayde vnto him: Lorde we know not whether thou goest Also how is it possyble for vs to knowe the waye? 6 Iesus sayd vnto hym: I am the waye, the truthe and the lyfe. And no man commeth to the father, but by me. 7 Yf ye had knowen me, ye had knowen my father also. And nowe ye knowe hym, & haue sene hym. 8 Philip sayde vnto hym: Lorde shewe vs the father, and it suffyseth vs. 9 Iesus sayd vnto hym. Haue I bene so longe tyme with you, and yet haste thou not knowen me? Philip, he that hath sene me, hath sene the father. And how sayest thou then: shew vs the father? 10 Beleuest thou not that I am in the father & the father in me? The wordes that I speake vnto you. I speake not of my selfe: but the father that dwelleth in me, is he that doeth the workes. 11 Beleue ye not that I am in the father, and the father in me? At the least beleue me for the very workes sake. 12 Verely, verely I saye vnto you, he that beleueth on me, the workes that I do, the same shal he do, and greater workes then these shal he do, because I go vnto my father. 13 And whatsoeuer ye axe in my name that will I do that the father myght be glorifyed by the sonne. 14 Yf ye shall axe any thyng in my name, I wyl do it. 15 Yf ye loue me, kepe my commaundementes 16 & I will praye the father, and he shal geue you another conforter, that he may byde with you euer 17 which is the spirite of truth whom the worlde can not receyue, because the world seeth hym not, neyther knoweth hym. But ye knowe hym. For he dwelleth with you, & shal be in you. 18 I wyll not leaue you comfortlesse, but wyll come vnto you. 19 Yet a lytel whyle and the worlde seeth me no more: but ye shal se me. For I lyue, and ye shall lyue. 20 That daye shall ye knowe that I am in my father, and you in me, and I in you 21 He that hathe my commaundementes and kepeth them, the same is he that loueth me. And he that loueth me, shal be loued of my father: And I will loue hym, and will shewe myne owne selfe to him. 22 Iudas sayd vnto hym (not Iudas Iscarioth) Lord what is the cause that thou wilte shewe thy selfe vnto vs, & not vnto the worlde? 23 Iesus aunswered and sayd vnto hym, yf a man loue me, and will kepe my saiynges, my father also will loue hym & we will come vnto hym, and will dwell to hym. 24 He that loueth me not, kepeth not my saiynges. And the wordes whiche ye heare, are not myne, but the fathers which sent me. 25 Thys haue I spoken vnto you, beynge yet present with you. 26 But that comforter whiche is the holy ghost (whome my father wil send in my name) he shal teache you all thinges, & brynge all thynges to youre remembraunce whatsoeuer I haue tolde you. 27 Peace I leaue with you, my peace I geue vnto you. Not as the worlde geueth, geue I vnto you. Let not your hertes be greued, neyther feare ye. 28 Ye haue hearde how I sayde vnto you. I go and come agayne vnto you. Yf ye loued me, ye would verely reioyce, because I sayde: I go vnto the father. For the father is greater then I. 29 And nowe haue I shewed you before it come, that when it is come to passe, ye myght beleue. 30 Here after will I not talke manye wordes vnto you. For the ruler of thys world cometh and hath noughte in me. 31 But that the worlde maye knowe that I loue the father: therfore as the father gaue me commaundement euen so do I. Ryse, let vs go hence. 15 1 I am the true vyne, and my father is on husband man. 2 Euery braunche that beareth not frute in me, he wyll take awaye. And euerye braunche that beareth frute, wil he pourge, that it maye bryng more frute. 3 Now are ye cleane thorowe the wordes which I haue spoken vnto you. 4 Byde in me, and let me byde in you. As the braunche can not beare frute of it selfe, except it byde in the vyne no more can ye except ye abyde in me. 5 I am the vyne, and ye are the braunches. He that abydeth in me, and I in him, the same bryngeth forth muche frute. For without me can ye do nothynge. 6 Yf a man byde not in me, he is cast forth as a braunche, and is wythered: and men gather it, and cast it into the fyre, and it burneth. 7 Yf ye hyd in me and my wordes also hyd in you: axe what ye wyll, and it shalbe done to you. 8 Here is my father glorifyed that ye beare muche fruyte, and be made my disciples. 9 As the father hath loued me, euen so haue I loued you. Continue in my loue. 10 Yf ye shal kepe my commaundementes, ye shall byde in my loue, euen as I haue kepte my fathers commaundementes, and abyde in hys loue. 11 These thynges haue I spoken vnto you, that my ioye myght remayne in you, and that youre ioye myght be full. 12 This is my commaundement, that ye loue together as I haue loued you. 13 Greater loue then thys hath no man, then that a man bestowe hys lyfe for hys frendes. 14 Ye are my frendes, yf ye do whatsoeuer I commaunde you. 15 Henceforth call I you not seruauntes: for the seruaunt knoweth not what hys lorde doth. But you haue I called frendes, for all thynges that I haue heard of my father, I haue opened vnto you. 16 Ye haue not chosen me, but I haue chosen you and ordeyned you, that ye go & bringe forth frute, and that your frute remayne, and that whatsoeuer ye shall axe of the father in my name, he shoulde geue it to you. 17 Thys commaunde I you, that ye loue together. 18 Yf the worlde hate you, ye knowe that it hated me before it hated you. 19 Yf ye were of the worlde, the worlde woulde loue his owne. Howe be it because ye are not of the worlde, but I haue chosen you out of the worlde, therfore hateth you the worlde. 20 Remember the saiyng that I sayde vnto you: the seruaunt is not greater then the lorde, yf they haue persecuted me, so wyll they persecute you: yf they haue kept my saiynges, so wyll they kepe yours. 21 But all these thinges wyll they do vnto you, for my names sake, because they haue not knowen him that sent me. 22 Yf I had not come, and spoken vnto them, they should not haue had synne: but now haue they nothynge to cloke theyr synne with all. 23 He that hateth me, hateth my father. 24 If I had not done workes among them which none other man dyd, they had not had synne. But now haue they sene, & yet haue hated both me & my father: 25 euen that the saiyng might be fulfilled that is writen in their lawe: they hated me without a cause. 26 But when the comforter is come, whome I will sende vnto you from the father, which is the spirite of truth, which proceadeth of the father, he shall testify of me. 27 And ye shall beare witnes, also because ye haue bene with me from the begynnynge. 16 1 These thynges haue I sayed vnto you, because ye shoulde not be offended. 2 They shall excommunicate you: ye the tyme shall come, that whosoeuer kylleth you, wil thinke that he doeth god seruice. 3 And suche thinges shall they do vnto you, because they haue not knowen the father, neyther yet me. 4 But these thynges haue I tolde you, that when that houre is come ye myghte remember them that I tolde you so. These thynges sayde I not vnto you at the begynnynge, because I was present with you. 5 But nowe I go my waye to hym that sent me, and none of you axeth me, whyther goest thou? 6 But because I haue sayde suche thinges vnto you, youre hertes are full of sorowe. 7 Neuerthelesse I tell you the trueth, it is expediente for you that I go awaye. For yf I go not awaye, that comforter wil not come vnto you. But yf I departe, I wil sende hym vnto you. 8 And when he is come, he wil rebuke the world of synne, and of ryghteousnesse, and of iudgement 9 Of synne, because they beleue not on me: 10 of ryghteousnesse, because I go to my father, and then ye shall not se me, 11 and of iudgement, because the chiefe ruler of this worlde is iudged already. 12 I haue yet many thinges to say vnto you, but ye cannot beare them awaye now. 13 Howe be it when he is come (I meane the spirite of truth) he wyll lead you into all truth. He shall not speake of hym self, but whatsoeuer he shal heare, that shall he speake, and he wyll shewe you thynges to come. 14 He shall glorifye me, for he shall receyue of myne, and shall shewe vnto you. 15 Al thynges that the father hath, are myne. Therfore sayd I vnto you, that he shal take of myne, and shewe vnto you. 16 After a whyle ye shall not se me: & agayne after a whyle ye shall se me: for I go to the father. 17 Then sayed some of hys disciples amonge them selues: what is this that he sayeth vnto vs: after a whyle ye shall not se me, & agayne after a whyle ye shall se me, and that I go to the father. 18 They sayd therfore: what is it that he sayeth, after a whyle? we can not tell what he sayth. 19 Iesus perceyued that they woulde axe him and sayde vnto them. This is it that ye enquyre of amonge your selues that I sayde after a whyle ye shall not se me, and agayne after a whyle ye shall se me. 20 Verely verely I say vnto you: ye shall wepe and lament, & the world shall reioyce. Ye shall sorowe, but your sorow shalbe turned into ioye. 21 A woman when she trauayleth, hathe sorowe, because her houre is come: but assone as she is deliuered of the child she remembreth no more the anguish, for ioye that a man is borne into the worlde. 22 And ye now are in sorow: but I wyll se you agayne, and youre hertes shall reioyce, and youre ioye shall no man take from you. 23 And in that day shal ye axe me no question. Verely verely I say vnto you: whatsoeuer ye shall axe the father in my name, he wyll geue it you. 24 Hytherto haue ye axed nothyng in my name. Axe and ye shall receyue it, that your ioye maye be full. 25 These thynges haue I spoken vnto you in prouerbes. The tyme will come when I shall no more speake to you in prouerbes: but I shall shewe you plainly from my father. 26 At that daye shall ye axe in my name. And I say not vnto you that I wyll speake vnto my father for you. 27 For the father hym selfe loueth you, because ye haue loued me, and haue beleued, that I came out from God. 28 I wente oute from the father, and came into the world, and I leaue the world agayne, and go to the father. 29 Hys disciples sayde vnto him: lo now speakest thou plainly, and thou vsest no prouerbe. 30 Nowe knowe we that thou vnderstandest all thynges, and nedest not that any man should axe the any question. Therfore beleue we that thou camest from God. 31 Iesus aunswered them: Now ye do beleue. 32 Beholde, the houre draweth nye, and is all readye come that ye shalbe scatered euerye man hys wayes, and shall leaue me alone. And yet am I not alone. For the father is with me. 33 These wordes haue I spoken vnto you, that in me you myght haue peace. For in the worlde shall you haue tribulacyon: but be of good cheare. I haue ouercome the worlde.
