Then with a view to some who had a confidence in themselves that they were righteous, and who despised others, he spake this parable,
Two men went up to the temple to pray; the one, a Pharisee; and the other, a publican.
The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; nor even as that publican.
I fast twice a week. I pay tithes of all that I possess.
But the publican, who stood at a distance, did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying; God, be merciful to me a sinner.
I tell you, this man went down to his house acquitted, and not the other. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself shall be exalted.
