I will tell thee the mystery of this woman and of the beast which carrieth her, which hath seven heads and ten horns. ⁸ The beast which thou sawest was and is not and is soon to ascend out of the bottomless gulf and go to destruction; and the inhabitants of the earth, whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will wonder when they see the beast, because it was and is not although indeed it is.
