Now Abraham was old and far advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed him in all things.
And he said to the elder servant of his house, who was ruler over all he had: Put thy hand under my thigh,
I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.
But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac."
The servant asked: "What if the young woman will not leave home to come with me to this land? Shall I send your son back to the land you came from?"
Abraham answered: "Make sure that you do not send my son back there!
the LORD, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'to your offspring I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.
And if the woman will not be willing to go after you, then you shall be clear from this oath of mine; only do not take my son back there.
And the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him concerning this matter.
And the servant took ten of his master's camels, and all sorts of good things of his master's, and went to Mesopotamia, to the town of Nahor.
He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the evening time, the time that women go out to draw water.
He said, “Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
See, I am waiting here by the water-spring; and the daughters of the town are coming out to get water:
"Let there be the girl to whom I say: 'Please let down your jar so that I may drink,' and who answers: 'Drink, and I will water your camels also.' May she be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown loving-kindness to my master."
Before he finished praying, Rebekah came with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor.
The young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin. No man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her pitcher, and came up.
The servant ran to meet her, and said, "Please give me a drink, a little water from your pitcher."
"Drink, my lord," she said. She quickly lowered her jar to her hand and gave him a drink.
And when she had finished giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.
She quickly emptied her jar into the water trough. Then she ran back to the well to draw more water. She drew enough for all his camels.
The man quietly watched her to see whether or not the LORD made his trip successful.
When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a fifth of an ounce and two gold bracelets weighing four ounces.
and said, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father's house for us to lodge in?"
She said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor."
And she said to him, We have both straw and fodder enough, and room to lodge in.
And the man bowed and worshiped the LORD.
He said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, the LORD has led me in the way to the house of my master's relatives."
The young lady ran, and told her mother's house about these words.
Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he came out quickly to the man at the water-spring.
Laban had seen the nose ring and the bracelets on his sister's arms and had heard her say what the man told her. He went to Abraham's servant, who was standing by his camels at the well,
And he said, Come in, blessed of the LORD! Why are you standing outside? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.
The man went into the house. Laban unloaded the camels and gave them straw and fodder. Then he brought water for Abraham’s servant and his men to wash their feet.
And food was set before him to eat. But he said, I will not eat until I have told my errand. And he said, Speak on.
And he said, "I am Abraham's servant,
The LORD has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys.
And Sara, my master's wife, hath borne my master a son in her old age, and he hath given him all that he had.
My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,
But go to my father's house and to my relations for a wife for my son.
But I answered my master: What if the woman will not come with me?
"He said to me: 'the LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you to make your journey successful. You will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father's house.
Then will you be clear from my oath, when you come to my relatives. If they do not give her to you, you shall be clear from my oath.'
Then today I came to the spring, and I said, 'O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you would please make my journey successful, upon which I am going.
Behold! I stand at the well of water, and when the virgin comes out to draw water, and I say to her, Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher,
and she will tell me, 'Drink, and I will also draw for your camels' - let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.
"Before I had finished speaking in my heart, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew, and I said to her, 'Please let me drink.'
"She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also'; so I drank, and she watered the camels also.
Then I asked her and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms.
"I bowed low and worshiped the LORD, and praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham. He guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right, or to the left.
Then Laban and Bethuel answered, "The thing proceeds from the LORD. We can't speak to you bad or good.
"Here is Rebekah before you; take her and go. Let her be the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has spoken."
When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the earth to the LORD.
And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
He and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. When they got up in the morning, he said: "Let me go back to my master."
And her brother and her mother said, "Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; after that she may go."
And he said to them, Do not delay me, for the LORD has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.
And they said, "Let us call the girl and ask her opinion."
They called Rebekah, and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will go."
So they sent their sister Rebekah and her servant with Abraham's servant and his men.
And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, Our sister, may you become myriads of thousands, and may your seed possess the gate of their haters.
And Rebekah and her maidservants arose, and they mounted the camels and ⌊followed⌋ the man. And the servant took Rebekah and left.
Now Isaac had come through the waste land to Beer-lahai-roi; for he was living in the South.
He went out in the early evening to take a walk in the fields. He saw camels coming.
And when Rebekah, looking up, saw Isaac, she got down from her camel,
She asked Abraham's servant: "Who is that man walking toward us in the field?" "He is my master," the servant answered. So she took her veil (scarf) and covered her face.
And the servant told Isaac all that he had done.
And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother.
