¹⁹ ἔσονται (will be in) γὰρ (for) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) ἐκεῖναι (those) θλῖψις (tribulation), οἵα (such as) οὐ (never) γέγονεν (has been) τοιαύτη (the like), ἀπ’ (from the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) κτίσεως (of creation), ἣν (which) ἔκτισεν (created) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἕως (until) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now)— καὶ (and) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) γένηται (shall be).

¹ Ἐν (In the) ἀρχῇ (beginning) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) ἦν (was) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καὶ (and) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word). ² Οὗτος (He) ἦν (was) ἐν (in the) ἀρχῇ (beginning) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ³ πάντα (All things) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being), καὶ (and) χωρὶς (without) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being) οὐδὲ (not even) ἕν (one thing) ὃ (that) γέγονεν (has come into being).

¹⁹ διότι (because) τὸ (the) γνωστὸν (known) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) φανερόν (manifest) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), ὁ (-) θεὸς (God) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐφανέρωσεν (has revealed it). ²⁰ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατα (invisible qualities) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπὸ (from) κτίσεως (the creation) κόσμου (of the world), τοῖς (by the) ποιήμασιν (things made) νοούμενα (being understood), καθορᾶται (are clearly seen), ἥ (the) τε (both) ἀΐδιος (eternal) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δύναμις (power) καὶ (and) θειότης (divinity), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀναπολογήτους (without excuse).

³⁶ ὅτι (For) ἐξ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (-) πάντα (are all things). αὐτῷ (To Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages)! ἀμήν (Amen).

⁶ ἀλλ’ (yet) ἡμῖν (to us) εἷς (there is one) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), ἐξ (of) οὗ (whom are) τὰ (the things) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) εἰς (for) αὐτόν (Him); καὶ (and) εἷς (one) Κύριος (Lord), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστός (Christ), δι’ (by) οὗ (whom are) τὰ (the things) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him).

³ Πίστει (By faith) νοοῦμεν (we understand) κατηρτίσθαι (to have been formed) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (universe) ῥήματι (by the word) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (so that) τὸ (which) μὴ (not) ἐκ (from things) φαινομένων (being visible), τὸ (the things) βλεπόμενον (being seen) γεγονέναι (have been made).

⁶ καὶ (and) ὤμοσεν (he swore) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) ζῶντι (living) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), ὃς (who) ἔκτισεν (created) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) ὅτι (-), “Χρόνος (Delay) οὐκέτι (no longer) ἔσται (will there be)!

⁷ λέγων (saying) ἐν (in) φωνῇ (a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), “Φοβήθητε (Fear) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), καὶ (and) δότε (give) αὐτῷ (Him) δόξαν (glory), ὅτι (because) ἦλθεν (has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) τῆς (of the) κρίσεως (judgment) αὐτοῦ (of Him). καὶ (And) προσκυνήσατε (worship) τῷ (the One) ποιήσαντι (having made) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) θάλασσαν (sea), καὶ (and) πηγὰς (springs) ὑδάτων (of waters).”

⁶ καὶ (And) εἶπέν (He said) μοι (to me), “Γέγοναν (It is done)! ἐγὼ (I) [εἰμι] (am) τὸ (the) Ἄλφα (Alpha) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Ὦ (Omega), ἡ (the) ἀρχὴ (beginning) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) τέλος (end). ἐγὼ (I) τῷ (to the one) διψῶντι (thirsting) δώσω (will give) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) πηγῆς (spring) τοῦ (of the) ὕδατος (water) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) δωρεάν (freely).

¹³ ἐγὼ (I am) τὸ (the) Ἄλφα (Alpha) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Ὦ (Omega), ὁ (the) πρῶτος (First) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἔσχατος (Last), ἡ (the) ἀρχὴ (Beginning) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) τέλος (End).”

³ Καὶ (And) ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ἥψατο (He touched) αὐτοῦ (him), λέγων (saying), “Θέλω (I am willing); καθαρίσθητι (be you cleansed)!” καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) ἐκαθαρίσθη* (was cleansed) αὐτοῦ (his) ἡ (-) λέπρα (leprosy).

⁵ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) φαίνει (shines), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) αὐτὸ (it) οὐ (not) κατέλαβεν (overcame).

⁹ Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

¹⁹ Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κρίσις (judgement), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) ἢ (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light); ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds).

⁴³ Καὶ (And) ταῦτα (these things) εἰπὼν (having said), φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) ἐκραύγασεν (He cried out), “Λάζαρε (Lazarus), δεῦρο (come) ἔξω (forth).”

⁶ ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) εἰπών (having said), “Ἐκ (Out of) σκότους (darkness) φῶς (light) λάμψει (shall shine),” ὃς (who) ἔλαμψεν (shone) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) πρὸς (for the) φωτισμὸν (radiance) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) προσώπῳ (the face) [Ἰησοῦ] (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁸ Ἦτε (You were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness); νῦν (now) δὲ (however), φῶς (light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord); ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk)—

¹⁴ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἔγειρε (Awake you), ὁ (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping), καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).”

¹⁶ ὁ (-) μόνος (alone) ἔχων (having) ἀθανασίαν (immortality), φῶς (in light) οἰκῶν (dwelling) ἀπρόσιτον (unapproachable), ὃν (whom) εἶδεν (has seen) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἀνθρώπων (of men) οὐδὲ (nor) ἰδεῖν (to see) δύναται (is able), ᾧ (to whom be) τιμὴ (honor) καὶ (and) κράτος (dominion) αἰώνιον (eternal). ἀμήν (Amen).

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) ἀναγγέλλομεν (we preach) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) φῶς (light) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) σκοτία (darkness) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) οὐδεμία (none).

⁸ πάλιν (Again), ἐντολὴν (a commandment) καινὴν (new) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθὲς (true) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true) ἤδη (already) φαίνει (shines).

¹³ ἑκάστου (of each) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) φανερὸν (manifest) γενήσεται (will become); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) ἡμέρα (day) δηλώσει (will disclose it), ὅτι (because) ἐν (in) πυρὶ (fire) ἀποκαλύπτεται (it is revealed); καὶ (and) ἑκάστου (of each) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work), ὁποῖόν (what sort) ἐστιν (it is), τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) αὐτὸ (itself) δοκιμάσει (will prove).

¹³ τὰ (-) δὲ (But) πάντα (everything) ἐλεγχόμενα (being exposed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) φωτὸς (light) φανεροῦται (is made visible), πᾶν (everything) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) φανερούμενον (becoming visible) φῶς (light) ἐστιν (is).

⁵ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you), υἱοὶ (sons) φωτός (of light) ἐστε (are), καὶ (and) υἱοὶ (sons) ἡμέρας (of day). Οὐκ (Not) ἐσμὲν (we are) νυκτὸς (of night) οὐδὲ (nor) σκότους (of darkness).

²⁷ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἄνθρωποι (the men) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled), λέγοντες (saying), “Ποταπός (What kind of man) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this), ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) ἄνεμοι (winds) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) θάλασσα (sea) αὐτῷ (Him) ὑπακούουσιν (obey)?”

¹⁰ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).

³⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) τὸν (the) χόρτον (grass) τοῦ (of the) ἀγροῦ (field), σήμερον (today) ὄντα (being here), καὶ (and) αὔριον (tomorrow) εἰς (into) κλίβανον (the furnace) βαλλόμενον (being thrown), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) οὕτως (thus) ἀμφιέννυσιν (clothes), οὐ (will He not) πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) ὑμᾶς (you), ὀλιγόπιστοι (O you of little faith)?

¹⁶ ἀπὸ (By) τῶν (the) καρπῶν (fruits) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιγνώσεσθε (you will know) αὐτούς (them). μήτι (Not) συλλέγουσιν (do they gather) ἀπὸ (from) ἀκανθῶν (thorns) σταφυλὰς (grapes), ἢ (or) ἀπὸ (from) τριβόλων (thistles) σῦκα (figs)? ¹⁷ οὕτως (So) πᾶν (every) δένδρον (tree) ἀγαθὸν (good), καρποὺς (fruits) καλοὺς (good) ποιεῖ (produces); τὸ (-) δὲ (but) σαπρὸν (the bad) δένδρον (tree), καρποὺς (fruits) πονηροὺς (bad) ποιεῖ (produces). ¹⁸ οὐ (Not) δύναται (is able) δένδρον (a tree) ἀγαθὸν (good), καρποὺς (fruits) πονηροὺς (bad) ποιεῖν* (to produce); οὐδὲ (nor) δένδρον (a tree) σαπρὸν (bad), καρποὺς (fruits) καλοὺς (good) ποιεῖν* (to produce). ¹⁹ πᾶν (Every) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (fire) βάλλεται (is thrown). ²⁰ ἄρα¦γε (Then surely) ἀπὸ (by) τῶν (the) καρπῶν (fruits) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιγνώσεσθε (you will know) αὐτούς (them).

²⁸ αὐτομάτη (Of itself), ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) καρποφορεῖ (brings forth fruit)— πρῶτον (first) χόρτον (a plant), εἶτα* (then) στάχυν (an ear), εἶτα* (then) πλήρης (full) σῖτον* (grain) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) στάχυϊ (ear).

⁴³ Οὐ (No) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) δένδρον (tree) καλὸν (good), ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) σαπρόν (bad); οὐδὲ (nor) πάλιν (again) δένδρον (a tree) σαπρὸν (bad), ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλόν (good). ⁴⁴ ἕκαστον (Each) γὰρ (for) δένδρον (tree) ἐκ (by) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) καρποῦ (fruit) γινώσκεται (is known). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (from) ἀκανθῶν (thorns) συλλέγουσιν (do they gather) σῦκα (figs), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (from) βάτου (a bramble bush) σταφυλὴν (grapes) τρυγῶσιν (gather they).

⁷ Γῆ (Land) γὰρ (for) ἡ (-) πιοῦσα (having drunk in) τὸν (the) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτῆς (it) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πολλάκις (often) ὑετόν (rain), καὶ (and) τίκτουσα (producing) βοτάνην (vegetation) εὔθετον (useful) ἐκείνοις (for those) δι’ (for the sake of) οὓς (whom) καὶ (also) γεωργεῖται (it is tilled), μεταλαμβάνει (partakes) εὐλογίας (of blessing) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹² μὴ (Not) δύναται (is able), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), συκῆ (a fig tree) ἐλαίας (olives) ποιῆσαι (to produce)? ἢ (Or) ἄμπελος (a vine), σῦκα (figs)? οὔτε (Nor) ἁλυκὸν (a salt spring), γλυκὺ (fresh) ποιῆσαι (to produce) ὕδωρ (water).

²⁴ Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) παρέθηκεν (put He before) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ὡμοιώθη (Has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἀνθρώπῳ (a man) σπείραντι (having sown) καλὸν (good) σπέρμα (seed) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁵ ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῷ (the time) καθεύδειν (are sleeping) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men), ἦλθεν (came) αὐτοῦ (his) ὁ (-) ἐχθρὸς (enemy) καὶ (and) ἐπέσπειρεν (sowed) ζιζάνια (weeds) ἀνὰ (in the) μέσον (midst) τοῦ (of the) σίτου (wheat), καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (went away). ²⁶ ὅτε (When) δὲ (now) ἐβλάστησεν (sprouted) ὁ (the) χόρτος (plants) καὶ (and) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐποίησεν (produced), τότε (then) ἐφάνη (appeared) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds).

⁴⁴ ἕκαστον (Each) γὰρ (for) δένδρον (tree) ἐκ (by) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) καρποῦ (fruit) γινώσκεται (is known). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (from) ἀκανθῶν (thorns) συλλέγουσιν (do they gather) σῦκα (figs), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (from) βάτου (a bramble bush) σταφυλὴν (grapes) τρυγῶσιν (gather they).

¹⁰ Ὁ (The One) δὲ (now) ἐπιχορηγῶν (supplying) σπόρον* (seed) τῷ (to him) σπείροντι (sowing) καὶ (and) ἄρτον (bread) εἰς (for) βρῶσιν (food) χορηγήσει (will supply) καὶ (and) πληθυνεῖ (will multiply) τὸν (the) σπόρον (seed for sowing) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) αὐξήσει (will increase) τὰ (the) γενήματα (fruits) τῆς (of the) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) ὑμῶν (of you),

⁷ Μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be misled); Θεὸς (God) οὐ (not) μυκτηρίζεται (is mocked). ὃ (Whatever) γὰρ (for) ἐὰν (if) σπείρῃ (might sow) ἄνθρωπος (a man), τοῦτο (that) καὶ (also) θερίσει (he will reap).

² λέγοντες (saying), “Ποῦ (Where) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) τεχθεὶς (having been born) βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)? εἴδομεν (We saw) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸν (the) ἀστέρα (star) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀνατολῇ (east), καὶ (and) ἤλθομεν (are come) προσκυνῆσαι (to worship) αὐτῷ (Him).”

² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὀψίας (Evening) γενομένης (having come), λέγετε (you say), ‘Εὐδία (Fair weather); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ ³ καὶ (And) πρωΐ (in the morning), ‘Σήμερον (Today) χειμών (a storm); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) στυγνάζων (being overcast) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πρόσωπον (appearance) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) γινώσκετε (you know how) διακρίνειν (to discern), τὰ (-) δὲ (but) σημεῖα (the signs) τῶν (of the) καιρῶν (times), οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able)!

²⁹ Εὐθέως (Immediately) δὲ (then) μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) θλῖψιν (tribulation) τῶν (the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐκείνων (of those): ‘Ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) σκοτισθήσεται (will be darkened), Καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) οὐ (not) δώσει (will give) τὸ (the) φέγγος (light) αὐτῆς (of it), Καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀστέρες (stars) πεσοῦνται (will fall) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) οὐρανοῦ (sky), Καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (powers) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) σαλευθήσονται (will be shaken).’

²⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days), μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἐκείνην (those), ‘Ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) σκοτισθήσεται (will be darkened), Καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) οὐ (not) δώσει (will give) τὸ (the) φέγγος (light) αὐτῆς (of it);

²⁵ Καὶ (And) ἔσονται (there will be) σημεῖα (signs) ἐν (in) ἡλίῳ (sun), καὶ (and) σελήνῃ (moon), καὶ (and) ἄστροις (stars); καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) συνοχὴ (distress) ἐθνῶν (of nations) ἐν (with) ἀπορίᾳ (perplexity), ἤχους (the roaring) θαλάσσης (of the sea) καὶ (and) σάλου (rolling surge), ²⁶ ἀποψυχόντων (fainting) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀπὸ (from) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) προσδοκίας (expectation) τῶν (of that which) ἐπερχομένων (is coming) τῇ (on the) οἰκουμένῃ (earth); αἱ (-) γὰρ (for) δυνάμεις (the powers) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) σαλευθήσονται (will be shaken).

⁴⁵ τοῦ (The) ἡλίου (sun) ἐκλιπόντος (was darkened); ἐσχίσθη (was torn) δὲ (then) τὸ (the) καταπέτασμα (veil) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) μέσον (in the middle).

¹⁹ καὶ (and) δώσω (I will show) τέρατα (wonders) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) ἄνω (above), καὶ (and) σημεῖα (signs) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) κάτω (below), αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) πῦρ (fire) καὶ (and) ἀτμίδα (vapor) καπνοῦ (of smoke). ²⁰ ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) μεταστραφήσεται (will be turned) εἰς (into) σκότος (darkness), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) εἰς (into) αἷμα (blood), πρὶν (before) ἐλθεῖν (coming) ἡμέραν (day) Κυρίου (of the Lord), τὴν (-) μεγάλην (great) καὶ (and) ἐπιφανῆ (glorious).

¹² Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) ὅτε (when) ἤνοιξεν (He opened) τὴν (the) σφραγῖδα (seal) τὴν (-) ἕκτην (sixth), καὶ (and) σεισμὸς (an earthquake) μέγας (great) ἐγένετο (there was), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) ἐγένετο (became) μέλας (black) ὡς (as) σάκκος (sackcloth) τρίχινος (of hair), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) ὅλη (whole) ἐγένετο (became) ὡς (like) αἷμα (blood),

¹² Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) τέταρτος (fourth) ἄγγελος (angel) ἐσάλπισεν (sounded his trumpet), καὶ (and) ἐπλήγη (was struck) τὸ (a) τρίτον (third) τοῦ (of the) ἡλίου (sun), καὶ (and) τὸ (a) τρίτον (third) τῆς (of the) σελήνης (moon), καὶ (and) τὸ (a) τρίτον (third) τῶν (of the) ἀστέρων (stars), ἵνα (so that) σκοτισθῇ (should be darkened) τὸ (a) τρίτον (third) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) μὴ (not) φάνῃ (should appear for) τὸ (a) τρίτον (third) αὐτῆς (of it), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) νὺξ (night) ὁμοίως (likewise).

² καὶ (And) ἤνοιξεν (he opened) τὸ (the) φρέαρ (pit) τῆς (of the) ἀβύσσου (abyss), καὶ (and) ἀνέβη (went up) καπνὸς (smoke) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) φρέατος (pit), ὡς (like) καπνὸς (the smoke) καμίνου (of a furnace) μεγάλης (great), καὶ (and) ἐσκοτώθη (were darkened) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἀὴρ (air) ἐκ (by) τοῦ (the) καπνοῦ (smoke) τοῦ (of the) φρέατος (pit).

⁴⁵ Ἀπὸ (From) δὲ (then) ἕκτης (the sixth) ὥρας (hour), σκότος (darkness) ἐγένετο (was) ἐπὶ (over) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land), ἕως (until) ὥρας (the hour) ἐνάτης (ninth).

⁴¹ ἄλλη (One is) δόξα (the glory) ἡλίου (of the sun), καὶ (and) ἄλλη (another) δόξα (the glory) σελήνης (of the moon), καὶ (and) ἄλλη (another) δόξα (the glory) ἀστέρων (of the stars); ἀστὴρ (star) γὰρ (for) ἀστέρος (from star) διαφέρει (differs) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

⁸ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) τέταρτος (fourth) ἐξέχεεν (poured out) τὴν (the) φιάλην (bowl) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) ἥλιον (sun), καὶ (and) ἐδόθη (there was given) αὐτῷ (to it) καυματίσαι (to scorch) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men) ἐν (with) πυρί (fire). ⁹ καὶ (And) ἐκαυματίσθησαν (were scorched) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men) καῦμα (with heat) μέγα (great), καὶ (and) ἐβλασφήμησαν (they cursed) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἔχοντος (having) τὴν (-) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἐπὶ (over) τὰς (the) πληγὰς (plagues) ταύτας (these); καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μετενόησαν (did they repent) δοῦναι (to give) αὐτῷ (Him) δόξαν (glory).

²³ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) πόλις (city) οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has) τοῦ (of the) ἡλίου (sun), οὐδὲ (nor) τῆς (of the) σελήνης (moon), ἵνα (that) φαίνωσιν (they should shine) αὐτῇ (in it); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) δόξα (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐφώτισεν (enlightened) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λύχνος (lamp) αὐτῆς (of it) τὸ (is the) Ἀρνίον (Lamb).

⁴⁷ οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἐντέταλται (has commanded) ἡμῖν (us) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord): ‘Τέθεικά (I have set) σε (you) εἰς (for) φῶς (a light) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), τοῦ (-) εἶναί (to be) σε (you) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἕως (to) ἐσχάτου (the uttermost part) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).’”

²⁵ οὐδὲ (nor) ὑπὸ (by) χειρῶν (hands) ἀνθρωπίνων (of men) θεραπεύεται (is He served), προσδεόμενός (as needing) τινος (anything), αὐτὸς (Himself) διδοὺς (giving) πᾶσι (to all) ζωὴν (life) καὶ (and) πνοὴν (breath), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πάντα (all);

⁴⁰ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) Ἰωνᾶς (Jonah) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κοιλίᾳ (belly) τοῦ (of the) κήτους (great fish) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) καὶ (and) τρεῖς (three) νύκτας (nights), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) καὶ (and) τρεῖς (three) νύκτας (nights).

¹⁷ ὁ (-) δὲ (But) [Ἰησοῦς] (Jesus) ἀπεκρίνατο (answered) αὐτοῖς (them), “Ὁ (The) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now) ἐργάζεται (is working), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐργάζομαι (am working).”

²³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) με (Me), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσει (he will keep), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἐλευσόμεθα (we will come), καὶ (and) μονὴν (a home) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him) ποιησόμεθα (will make).

²⁰ ξενίζοντα (Strange things) γάρ (for) τινα (some) εἰσφέρεις (you are bringing) εἰς (to) τὰς (the) ἀκοὰς (ears) ἡμῶν (of us). βουλόμεθα (We resolve) οὖν (therefore) γνῶναι (to know) τίνα (what) θέλει (wish) ταῦτα (these things) εἶναι (to be).”

²⁶ ἐποίησέν (He made) τε (then) ἐξ (of) ἑνὸς (one), πᾶν (every) ἔθνος (nation) ἀνθρώπων (of men), κατοικεῖν (to dwell) ἐπὶ (upon) παντὸς (all) προσώπου (the face) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ὁρίσας (having determined) προστεταγμένους (the appointed) καιροὺς (times) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ὁροθεσίας (boundaries) τῆς (of the) κατοικίας (habitation) αὐτῶν (of them),

²⁸ ‘Ἐν (In) αὐτῷ (Him) γὰρ (for) ζῶμεν (we live) καὶ (and) κινούμεθα (move) καὶ (and) ἐσμέν (are).’ ὡς (As) καί (also) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) καθ’ (among) ὑμᾶς (you) ποιητῶν (poets) εἰρήκασιν (have said), ‘Τοῦ (Of Him) γὰρ (for) καὶ (also) γένος (offspring) ἐσμέν (we are).’ ²⁹ γένος (Offspring) οὖν (therefore) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐκ (not) ὀφείλομεν (we ought) νομίζειν (to consider) χρυσῷ (to gold), ἢ (or) ἀργύρῳ (to silver), ἢ (or) λίθῳ (to stone), χαράγματι (a graven thing), τέχνης (of craft) καὶ (and) ἐνθυμήσεως (imagination) ἀνθρώπου (of man), τὸ (the) Θεῖον (Divine Being) εἶναι (to be) ὅμοιον (like).

⁷ Ἀνὴρ (A man) μὲν (truly) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (not) ὀφείλει (ought) κατακαλύπτεσθαι (to cover) τὴν (the) κεφαλήν (head), εἰκὼν (image) καὶ (and) δόξα (glory) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑπάρχων (being); ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) δὲ (however), δόξα (the glory) ἀνδρός (of man) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (now) πάντες (all), ἀνακεκαλυμμένῳ (having been unveiled) προσώπῳ (in face), τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) Κυρίου (of the Lord) κατοπτριζόμενοι (beholding as in a mirror), τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) εἰκόνα (image) μεταμορφούμεθα (are being transformed into), ἀπὸ (from) δόξης (glory) εἰς (to) δόξαν (glory), καθάπερ (even as) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord), Πνεύματος (the Spirit).

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁴ καὶ (and) ἐνδύσασθαι (to have put on) τὸν (the) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (-) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) κτισθέντα (having been created) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ὁσιότητι (holiness) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth).

¹⁵ Ὅς (He) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (-) ἀοράτου (invisible), πρωτότοκος (the firstborn) πάσης (over all) κτίσεως (creation),

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) νέον (new), τὸν (the one) ἀνακαινούμενον (being renewed) εἰς (in) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) κατ’ (according to) εἰκόνα (the image) τοῦ (of the one) κτίσαντος (having created) αὐτόν (him),

⁶ διεμαρτύρατο (Has testified) δέ (however) πού (somewhere) τις (someone), λέγων (saying), “Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) ἄνθρωπος (man), ὅτι (that) μιμνῄσκῃ (You are mindful) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἢ (or) υἱὸς (the son) ἀνθρώπου (of man), ὅτι (that) ἐπισκέπτῃ (You care for) αὐτόν (him)? ⁷ ἠλάττωσας (You made lower) αὐτὸν (him) βραχύ (a little) τι (some) παρ’ (than) ἀγγέλους (the angels); δόξῃ (with glory) καὶ (and) τιμῇ (honor) ἐστεφάνωσας (You crowned) αὐτόν (him), ⁸ πάντα (all things) ὑπέταξας (You have put in subjection) ὑποκάτω (under) τῶν (the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of him). Ἐν (In) τῷ (-) γὰρ (for) ὑποτάξαι (subjecting) αὐτῷ (to him) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀφῆκεν (He left) αὐτῷ (to him) ἀνυπότακτον (unsubject). νῦν (At present) δὲ (however), οὔπω (not yet) ὁρῶμεν (do we see) αὐτῷ (to Him) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ὑποτεταγμένα (having been subjected). ⁹ τὸν (Who) δὲ (however) βραχύ (a little) τι (one) παρ’ (than) ἀγγέλους (the angels), ἠλαττωμένον (having been made lower), βλέπομεν (we see), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), διὰ (because of) τὸ (the) πάθημα (suffering) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), δόξῃ (with glory) καὶ (and) τιμῇ (with honor) ἐστεφανωμένον (having been crowned), ὅπως (so that) χάριτι (by the grace) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑπὲρ (for) παντὸς (everyone) γεύσηται (He might taste) θανάτου (death).

⁷ Πᾶσα (All) γὰρ (for) φύσις (kinds) θηρίων (of beasts) τε (both) καὶ (and) πετεινῶν (of birds), ἑρπετῶν (of creeping things) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἐναλίων (things of the sea), δαμάζεται (is subdued) καὶ (and) δεδάμασται (has been subdued) τῇ (by the) φύσει (race) τῇ (of the) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human),

⁹ Ἐν (With) αὐτῇ (it) εὐλογοῦμεν (we bless) τὸν (our) Κύριον (Lord) καὶ (and) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) αὐτῇ (it) καταρώμεθα (we curse) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men), τοὺς (those) καθ’ (according to) ὁμοίωσιν (the likeness) Θεοῦ (of God) γεγονότας (being made).

⁶ ἀπὸ (From), δὲ (however), ἀρχῆς (the beginning) κτίσεως (of creation), ‘Ἄρσεν (Male) καὶ (and) θῆλυ (female) ἐποίησεν (He made) αὐτούς (them).’

⁷ Ἀνὴρ (A man) μὲν (truly) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (not) ὀφείλει (ought) κατακαλύπτεσθαι (to cover) τὴν (the) κεφαλήν (head), εἰκὼν (image) καὶ (and) δόξα (glory) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑπάρχων (being); ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) δὲ (however), δόξα (the glory) ἀνδρός (of man) ἐστιν (is). ⁸ οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἀνὴρ (man) ἐκ (of) γυναικός (woman), ἀλλὰ (but) γυνὴ (woman) ἐξ (of) ἀνδρός (man). ⁹ καὶ (Truly) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (not) ἐκτίσθη (was created) ἀνὴρ (man) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman), ἀλλὰ (but) γυνὴ (woman) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man).

²⁶ τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) τὸ (-) ἀποκεκρυμμένον (having been hidden) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) αἰώνων (ages) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) γενεῶν (generations), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἐφανερώθη (having been manifested) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

³ κωλυόντων (forbidding) γαμεῖν (to marry), ἀπέχεσθαι (commanding to abstain) βρωμάτων (from foods) ἃ (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἔκτισεν (created) εἰς (for) μετάλημψιν (reception) μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving) τοῖς (by the) πιστοῖς (faithful) καὶ (and) ἐπεγνωκόσι (those knowing) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth).

¹¹ Τὸν (The) ἄρτον (bread) ἡμῶν (of us) τὸν (-) ἐπιούσιον (daily) δὸς (grant) ἡμῖν (us) σήμερον (today).

²⁵ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), μὴ (not) μεριμνᾶτε (be anxious about) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (life) ὑμῶν (of you), τί (what) φάγητε (you should eat) ἢ (or) τί (what) πίητε (you should drink); μηδὲ (nor) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ὑμῶν (of you), τί (what) ἐνδύσησθε (you should put on). οὐχὶ (Not) ἡ (the) ψυχὴ (life) πλεῖόν (more) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (than the) τροφῆς (food), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (than) ἐνδύματος (clothing)? ²⁶ ἐμβλέψατε (Look) εἰς (at) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air), ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) σπείρουσιν (they sow), οὐδὲ (nor) θερίζουσιν (do they reap), οὐδὲ (nor) συνάγουσιν (do they gather) εἰς (into) ἀποθήκας (barns)— καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) τρέφει (feeds) αὐτά (them). οὐχ (Not) ὑμεῖς (you) μᾶλλον (much) διαφέρετε (are more valuable) αὐτῶν (than they)?

¹⁷ καίτοι (And yet) οὐκ (not) ἀμάρτυρον (without witness) αὑτὸν (Himself) ἀφῆκεν (He has left), ἀγαθουργῶν (doing good), οὐρανόθεν (from heaven) ὑμῖν (to you) ὑετοὺς (rains) διδοὺς (giving) καὶ (and) καιροὺς (seasons) καρποφόρους (fruitful), ἐμπιπλῶν (filling) τροφῆς (with food) καὶ (and) εὐφροσύνης (gladness) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you).”

²⁴ Ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) ὁ (-) ποιήσας (having made) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) καὶ (and) πάντα (all things) τὰ (that are) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it), οὗτος (He) οὐρανοῦ (of heaven) καὶ (and) γῆς (earth) ὑπάρχων (being) Κύριος (Lord), οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) χειροποιήτοις (hand-made) ναοῖς (temples) κατοικεῖ (dwells), ²⁵ οὐδὲ (nor) ὑπὸ (by) χειρῶν (hands) ἀνθρωπίνων (of men) θεραπεύεται (is He served), προσδεόμενός (as needing) τινος (anything), αὐτὸς (Himself) διδοὺς (giving) πᾶσι (to all) ζωὴν (life) καὶ (and) πνοὴν (breath), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πάντα (all);

²⁸ ‘Ἐν (In) αὐτῷ (Him) γὰρ (for) ζῶμεν (we live) καὶ (and) κινούμεθα (move) καὶ (and) ἐσμέν (are).’ ὡς (As) καί (also) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) καθ’ (among) ὑμᾶς (you) ποιητῶν (poets) εἰρήκασιν (have said), ‘Τοῦ (Of Him) γὰρ (for) καὶ (also) γένος (offspring) ἐσμέν (we are).’

¹⁷ Τοῖς (To the) πλουσίοις (rich) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age), παράγγελλε (instruct them) μὴ (not) ὑψηλοφρονεῖν (to be high-minded), μηδὲ (nor) ἠλπικέναι (to have hope) ἐπὶ (in) πλούτου (of riches) ἀδηλότητι (the uncertainty), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπὶ (on) Θεῷ (God) τῷ (the One) παρέχοντι (providing) ἡμῖν (us) πάντα (all things) πλουσίως (richly) εἰς (for) ἀπόλαυσιν (enjoyment),

⁴ ὅτι (For) πᾶν (every) κτίσμα (creature) Θεοῦ (of God) καλόν (is good), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing is) ἀπόβλητον (to be rejected), μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving) λαμβανόμενον (being received);
