¹² Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤρξατο (began) κλίνειν (to decline); προσελθόντες (having come) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) δώδεκα (Twelve) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ἵνα (that) πορευθέντες (having gone) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) κύκλῳ (surrounding) κώμας (villages) καὶ (and) ἀγροὺς (countryside) καταλύσωσιν (they might lodge), καὶ (and) εὕρωσιν (might find) ἐπισιτισμόν (provisions); ὅτι (for) ὧδε (here) ἐν (in) ἐρήμῳ (a desolate) τόπῳ (place) ἐσμέν (we are).”

¹⁵ Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having come), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἔρημός (Desolate) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (this) τόπος (place), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ὥρα (time) ἤδη (already) παρῆλθεν (is gone by). ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) 〈οὖν〉 (therefore) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἵνα (that) ἀπελθόντες (having gone) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages), ἀγοράσωσιν (they might buy) ἑαυτοῖς (for themselves) βρώματα (food).” ¹⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐ (No) χρείαν (need) ἔχουσιν (they have) ἀπελθεῖν (to go away). δότε (Give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὑμεῖς (you) φαγεῖν (to eat).” ¹⁷ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) ὧδε (here), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish).” ¹⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (to Me) ὧδε (here) αὐτούς (them).” ¹⁹ καὶ (And) κελεύσας (having commanded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἀνακλιθῆναι (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) χόρτου (grass), λαβὼν (having taken) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish), ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εὐλόγησεν (He spoke a blessing); καὶ (and) κλάσας (having broken), ἔδωκεν (He gave) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied); καὶ (and) ἦραν (they took up) τὸ (that) περισσεῦον (being over and above) τῶν (of the) κλασμάτων (fragments), δώδεκα (twelve) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) πλήρεις (full). ²¹ οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐσθίοντες (eating) ἦσαν (were) ἄνδρες (men) ὡσεὶ (about) πεντακισχίλιοι (five thousand), χωρὶς (besides) γυναικῶν (women) καὶ (and) παιδίων (children).

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτῇ (her) λόγον (a word). καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come to him), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἠρώτουν (were imploring) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) αὐτήν (her), ὅτι (for) κράζει (she cries out) ὄπισθεν (after) ἡμῶν (us)!”

³² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (said), “Σπλαγχνίζομαι (I am moved with compassion) ἐπὶ (toward) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤδη (already) ἡμέραι (days) τρεῖς (three) προσμένουσίν (they continue) μοι (with Me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (have) τί (that) φάγωσιν (they might eat); καὶ (and) ἀπολῦσαι (to send away) αὐτοὺς (them) νήστεις (hungry), οὐ (not) θέλω (I am willing), μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) ἐκλυθῶσιν (they faint) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way).”

³⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤδη (already) ὥρας (the hour) πολλῆς (late) γενομένης (being), προσελθόντες (having come) αὐτῷ (to Him), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἔρημός (Desolate) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) τόπος (place), καὶ (and) ἤδη (already it is) ὥρα (an hour) πολλή (late). ³⁶ ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) αὐτούς (them), ἵνα (that) ἀπελθόντες (having gone) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) κύκλῳ (surrounding) ἀγροὺς (region) καὶ (and) κώμας (villages), ἀγοράσωσιν (they might buy) ἑαυτοῖς (for themselves) τί (something) φάγωσιν (to eat).” ³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Δότε (Give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὑμεῖς (you) φαγεῖν (something to eat).” Καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἀπελθόντες (Having gone), ἀγοράσωμεν (shall we buy) δηναρίων (denarii) διακοσίων (two hundred) ἄρτους (of bread), καὶ (and) δώσομεν (give) αὐτοῖς (them) φαγεῖν (to eat)?” ³⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πόσους (How many) ἔχετε (have you) ἄρτους (loaves)? ὑπάγετε (Go), ἴδετε (see).” Καὶ (And) γνόντες (having known), λέγουσιν (they say), “Πέντε (Five), καὶ (and) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish).” ³⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐπέταξεν (He commanded) αὐτοῖς (them) ἀνακλῖναι* (to make recline) πάντας (all), συμπόσια (groups) συμπόσια (by groups) ἐπὶ (on) τῷ (the) χλωρῷ (green) χόρτῳ (grass). ⁴⁰ καὶ (And) ἀνέπεσαν (they sat down) πρασιαὶ (groups) πρασιαὶ (by groups), κατὰ (by) ἑκατὸν (hundreds) καὶ (and) κατὰ (by) πεντήκοντα (fifties). ⁴¹ Καὶ (And) λαβὼν (having taken) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish), ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εὐλόγησεν (He blessed) καὶ (and) κατέκλασεν (broke) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves), καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (He kept giving them) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) ‹αὐτοῦ› (of Him) ἵνα (that) παρατιθῶσιν (they might set before) αὐτοῖς (them). καὶ (And) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish) ἐμέρισεν (He divided) πᾶσιν (among all). ⁴² Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied). ⁴³ καὶ (And) ἦραν (they took up) κλάσματα (of fragments) δώδεκα (twelve) κοφίνων (hand-baskets) πληρώματα (full), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) ἰχθύων (fish). ⁴⁴ καὶ (And) ἦσαν (were) οἱ (those) φαγόντες (having eaten of) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves) πεντακισχίλιοι (five thousand) ἄνδρες (men).

¹ Μετὰ (After) ταῦτα (these things) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πέραν (over) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (Sea) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee)— τῆς (-) Τιβεριάδος (of Tiberias).

⁵ ἐπάρας (Having lifted up) οὖν (then) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) θεασάμενος (having seen) ὅτι (that) πολὺς (a great) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔρχεται (is coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγει (He says) πρὸς (to) Φίλιππον (Philip), “Πόθεν (From where) ἀγοράσωμεν (shall we buy) ἄρτους (bread) ἵνα (that) φάγωσιν (might eat) οὗτοι (these)?” ⁶ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) πειράζων (testing) αὐτόν (him); αὐτὸς (He) γὰρ (for) ᾔδει (knew) τί (what) ἔμελλεν (He was about) ποιεῖν (to do). ⁷ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (-) Φίλιππος (Philip), “Διακοσίων (Two hundred) δηναρίων (denarii worth) ἄρτοι (of loaves) οὐκ (not) ἀρκοῦσιν (are sufficient) αὐτοῖς (for them) ἵνα (that) ἕκαστος (each) βραχύ (little piece) τι (one) λάβῃ (might receive).” ⁸ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) εἷς (one) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἀνδρέας (Andrew), ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) Σίμωνος (of Simon) Πέτρου (Peter), ⁹ “Ἔστιν (Is) παιδάριον (a little boy) ὧδε (here), ὃς (who) ἔχει (has) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) κριθίνους (barley) καὶ (and) δύο (two) ὀψάρια (small fish); ἀλλὰ (but) ταῦτα (these) τί (what) ἐστιν (are) εἰς (for) τοσούτους (so many)?” ¹⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ποιήσατε (Make) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) ἀναπεσεῖν (to recline).” ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) χόρτος (grass) πολὺς (much) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τόπῳ (place). ἀνέπεσαν (Reclined) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) ἄνδρες (men), τὸν (the) ἀριθμὸν (number) ὡς (about) πεντακισχίλιοι (five thousand). ¹¹ Ἔλαβεν (Took) οὖν (then) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) εὐχαριστήσας (having given thanks), διέδωκεν (He distributed) τοῖς (to those) ἀνακειμένοις (reclining); ὁμοίως (likewise) καὶ (also) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ὀψαρίων (fish), ὅσον (as much as) ἤθελον (they wished). ¹² Ὡς (When) δὲ (now) ἐνεπλήσθησαν (they were filled), λέγει (He says) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Συναγάγετε (Gather together) τὰ (the) περισσεύσαντα (having been over and above) κλάσματα (fragments), ἵνα (so that) μή (nothing) τι (anything) ἀπόληται (may be lost).” ¹³ συνήγαγον (They gathered together) οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) ἐγέμισαν (filled) δώδεκα (twelve) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) κλασμάτων (of fragments) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτων (loaves) τῶν (-) κριθίνων (barley) ἃ (which) ἐπερίσσευσαν (were over and above) τοῖς (to those) βεβρωκόσιν (having eaten). ¹⁴ Οἱ (The) οὖν (therefore) ἄνθρωποι (people), ἰδόντες (having seen) ὃ (what) ἐποίησεν (He had done), σημεῖον (the sign), ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet) ὁ (who) ἐρχόμενος (is coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).” ¹⁵ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore), γνοὺς (having known) ὅτι (that) μέλλουσιν (they are about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) καὶ (and) ἁρπάζειν (to seize) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) ποιήσωσιν (they might make Him) βασιλέα (king), ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) αὐτὸς (Himself) μόνος (alone).
