¹ Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said: ² Shall he that reproveth contend with the Almighty? He that argueth with God, let him answer it. ³ Then Job answered the LORD, and said: ⁴ Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer Thee? I lay my hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken, but I will not answer again; yea, twice, but I will proceed no further. ⁶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: ⁷ Gird up thy loins now like a man; I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me. ⁸ Wilt thou even make void My judgment? Wilt thou condemn Me, that thou mayest be justified? ⁹ Or hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like Him? ¹⁰ Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency, and array thyself with glory and beauty. ¹¹ Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath; and look upon every one that is proud, and abase him. ¹² Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. ¹³ Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in the hidden place. ¹⁴ Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee. ¹⁵ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. ¹⁶ Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the stays of his body. ¹⁷ He straineth his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. ¹⁸ His bones are as pipes of brass; his gristles are like bars of iron. ¹⁹ He is the beginning of the ways of God; He only that made him can make His sword to approach unto him. ²⁰ Surely the mountains bring him forth food, and all the beasts of the field play there. ²¹ He lieth under the lotus-trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. ²² The lotus-trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. ²³ Behold, if a river overflow, he trembleth not; he is confident, though the Jordan rush forth to his mouth. ²⁴ Shall any take him by his eyes, or pierce through his nose with a snare?

¹ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not perish at birth? ¹² Why did the knees receive me? And wherefore the breasts, that I should suck?

²⁰ Wherewith is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul -

²³ To a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

¹² Am I a sea, or a sea-monster, that Thou settest a watch over me?

¹⁹ How long wilt Thou not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I unto Thee, O Thou watcher of men? Why hast Thou set me as a mark for Thee, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why dost Thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust; and Thou wilt seek me, but I shall not be.

³ If one should desire to contend with Him, he could not answer Him one of a thousand.

¹⁷ He that would break me with a tempest, and multiply my wounds without cause; ¹⁸ That would not suffer me to take my breath, but fill me with bitterness.

³² For He is not a man, as I am, that I should answer Him, that we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no arbiter betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both. ³⁴ Let Him take His rod away from me, and let not His terror make me afraid; ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear Him; for I am not so with myself.

³ Is it good unto Thee that Thou shouldest oppress, that Thou shouldest despise the work of Thy hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked? ⁴ Hast Thou eyes of flesh? or seest Thou as man seeth? ⁵ Are Thy days as the days of man, or Thy years as a man's days, ⁶ That Thou inquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin, ⁷ Although Thou knowest that I shall not be condemned; and there is none that can deliver out of Thy hand?

¹⁴ If I sin, then Thou markest me, and Thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head - being filled with ignominy and looking upon mine affliction. ¹⁶ And if it exalt itself, Thou huntest me as a lion; and again Thou showest Thyself marvellous upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest Thy witnesses against me, and increasest Thine indignation upon me; host succeeding host against me.

²¹ Withdraw Thy hand far from me; and let not Thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call Thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer Thou me. ²³ How many are mine iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face, and holdest me for Thine enemy? ²⁵ Wilt Thou harass a driven leaf? And wilt Thou pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ That Thou shouldest write bitter things against me, and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; Thou drawest Thee a line about the soles of my feet;

¹⁶ But now Thou numberest my steps, Thou dost not even wait for my sin; ¹⁷ My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and Thou heapest up mine iniquity.

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly, and casteth me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and He broke me asunder; yea, He hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces; He hath also set me up for His mark. ¹³ His archers compass me round about, He cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; He poureth out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach; He runneth upon me like a giant. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and have laid my horn in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is reddened with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; ¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no resting-place. ¹⁹ Even now, behold, my Witness is in heaven, and He that testifieth of me is on high. ²⁰ Mine inward thoughts are my intercessors, mine eye poureth out tears unto God; ²¹ That He would set aright a man contending with God, as a son of man setteth aright his neighbour!

⁶ Know now that God hath subverted my cause, and hath compassed me with His net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out: 'Violence!' but I am not heard; I cry aloud, but there is no justice. ⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and hath set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone; and my hope hath He plucked up like a tree. ¹¹ He hath also kindled His wrath against me, and He counteth me unto Him as one of His adversaries.

² As God liveth, who hath taken away my right; and the Almighty, who hath dealt bitterly with me;

²¹ Thou art turned to be cruel to me; with the might of Thy hand Thou hatest me.

¹³ Why hast thou striven against Him? seeing that He will not answer any of his words.

¹⁰ Whatsoever cometh into being, the name thereof was given long ago, and it is foreknown what man is; neither can he contend with Him that is mightier than he.

¹⁴ With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of right, and taught Him knowledge, and made Him to know the way of discernment?

⁹ Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker, as a potsherd with the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioned it: 'What makest thou?' Or: 'Thy work, it hath no hands'? ¹⁰ Woe unto him that saith unto his father: 'Wherefore begettest thou?' Or to a woman: 'Wherefore travailest thou?' ¹¹ Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: Ask Me of the things that are to come; concerning My sons, and concerning the work of My hands, command ye Me.

⁸ He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together; who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

² 'What mean ye, that ye use this proverb in the land of Israel, saying: The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

¹¹ And when they received it, they murmured against the householder,

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he still find fault? For who withstandeth his will? ²⁰ Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus? ²¹ Or hath not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor? ²² What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction: ²³ and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he afore prepared unto glory,

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? ³⁵ or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? ³⁶ For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes.

¹⁰ (32:11) I am not worthy of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which Thou hast shown unto Thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two camps.

¹⁹ And they said unto him: 'Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest; is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?'

¹⁰ And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD: 'I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, O LORD, put away, I beseech Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.'

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom-tree; and he requested for himself that he might die; and said: 'It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.'

⁶ and I said: 'O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to Thee, my God; for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.

¹⁵ O LORD, the God of Israel, Thou art righteous; for we are left a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day; behold, we are before Thee in our guiltiness; for none can stand before Thee because of this.'

³³ Howbeit Thou art just in all that is come upon us; for Thou hast dealt truly, but we have done wickedly;

³¹ Yet wilt Thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.

²¹ That He would set aright a man contending with God, as a son of man setteth aright his neighbour!

⁵ Turn unto me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

⁴ I would order my cause before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which He would answer me, and understand what He would say unto me. ⁶ Would He contend with me in His great power? Nay; but He would give heed unto me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with Him; so should I be delivered for ever from my Judge.

⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth;

³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

⁶ Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing I am dust and ashes.

⁹ (39:10) I am dumb, I open not my mouth; because Thou hast done it.

⁴ (51:6) Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in Thy sight; that Thou mayest be justified when Thou speakest, and be in the right when Thou judgest. ⁵ (51:7) Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

³² If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast planned devices, lay thy hand upon thy mouth.

⁵ Then said I: Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

⁶ All we like sheep did go astray, we turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath made to light on him the iniquity of us all.

⁶ (64:5) And we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment; and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

⁵ we have sinned, and have dealt iniquitously, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, and have turned aside from Thy commandments and from Thine ordinances;

⁷ Unto Thee, O Lord, belongeth righteousness, but unto us confusion of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither Thou hast driven them, because they dealt treacherously with Thee.

¹⁶ The nations shall see and be put to shame for all their might; they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf.

²⁰ But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.

¹³ (2:17) Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD; for He is aroused out of His holy habitation.

⁸ But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight; ¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called your son; make me as one of thy hired servants.

¹³ But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be thou merciful to me a sinner.

¹⁵ Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief:

¹⁰ And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he guarded himself there, not once nor twice.

¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to Him that contendeth with me.

¹⁴ For God speaketh in one way, yea in two, though man perceiveth it not.

³¹ For hath any said unto God: 'I have borne chastisement, though I offend not; ³² That which I see not teach Thou me; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more'?

¹¹ (62:12) God hath spoken once, twice have I heard this: that strength belongeth unto God;

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself: 'Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf untrained; turn thou me, and I shall be turned, for Thou art the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented, and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh; I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.'

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

³ Our God cometh, and doth not keep silence; a fire devoureth before Him, and round about Him it stormeth mightily. ⁴ He calleth to the heavens above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people:

¹⁸ For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, ¹⁹ and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words, which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them, ²⁰ for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned,

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up. ¹¹ Seeing then that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness, ¹² looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

²² Then call Thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer Thou me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come even to His seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

³ Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.

⁴ Hear, I beseech Thee, and I will speak; I will demand of Thee, and declare Thou unto me.

² As God liveth, who hath taken away my right; and the Almighty, who hath dealt bitterly with me; ³ All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, ⁴ Surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit; ⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you; till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go; my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram; against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁵ For Job hath said: 'I am righteous, and God hath taken away my right; ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar; my wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.'

² Thinkest thou this to be thy right, or sayest thou: 'I am righteousness before God', ³ That thou inquirest: 'What advantage will it be unto Thee?' And: 'What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?'

⁴ (51:6) Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in Thy sight; that Thou mayest be justified when Thou speakest, and be in the right when Thou judgest.

²⁷ For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? And His hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

¹⁸ And your covenant with death shall be disannulled and your agreement with the nether-world shall not stand; when the scouring scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it,

⁴ God forbid; yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar, as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment.

¹⁵ Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto.

¹⁷ Now this I say; A covenant confirmed beforehand by God, the law, which came four hundred and thirty years after, doth not disannul, so as to make the promise of none effect.

¹⁸ For there is a disannulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness

⁶ Thy right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, Thy right hand, O LORD, dasheth in pieces the enemy.

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength; who hath hardened himself against Him, and prospered?

⁶ Would He contend with me in His great power? Nay; but He would give heed unto me.

¹² Behold, I answer thee: In this thou art not right, that God is too great for man; ¹³ Why hast thou striven against Him? seeing that He will not answer any of his words.

⁴ After it a voice roareth; He thundereth with the voice of His majesty; and He stayeth them not when His voice is heard. ⁵ God thundereth marvellously with His voice; great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend.

³ The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thundereth, even the LORD upon many waters.

³ (39:4) My heart waxed hot within me; while I was musing, the fire kindled; then spoke I with my tongue: ⁴ (39:5) 'LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; let me know how short-lived I am. ⁵ (39:6) Behold, Thou hast made my days as hand-breadths; and mine age is as nothing before Thee; surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah ⁶ (39:7) Surely man walketh as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. ⁷ (39:8) And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope, it is in Thee. ⁸ (39:9) Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the reproach of the base. ⁹ (39:10) I am dumb, I open not my mouth; because Thou hast done it.

¹⁰ (89:11) Thou didst crush Rahab, as one that is slain; Thou didst scatter Thine enemies with the arm of Thy strength.

¹³ (89:14) Thine is an arm with might; strong is Thy hand, and exalted is Thy right hand.

¹¹ Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine; Thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and Thou art exalted as head above all.

¹⁹ Hast thou given the horse his strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with fierceness?

⁵ (21:6) His glory is great through Thy salvation; honour and majesty dost Thou lay upon him.

³ (45:4) Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O mighty one, thy glory and thy majesty. ⁴ (45:5) And in thy majesty prosper, ride on, in behalf of truth and meekness and righteousness; and let thy right hand teach thee tremendous things.

² Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined forth.

¹⁶ Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, and Thy glory upon their children. ¹⁷ And let the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; establish Thou also upon us the work of our hands; yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it.

¹ The LORD reigneth; He is clothed in majesty; the LORD is clothed, He hath girded Himself with strength; yea, the world is established, that it cannot be moved.

¹ Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, Thou art very great; Thou art clothed with glory and majesty. ² Who coverest Thyself with light as with a garment, who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain;

⁴ For the LORD taketh pleasure in His people; He adorneth the humble with salvation.

² In that day shall the growth of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

¹⁷ And He put on righteousness as a coat of mail, and a helmet of salvation upon His head, and He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

¹³ { And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

⁵⁴ But when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

¹⁶ For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there was borne such a voice to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased:

²⁴ Now unto him that is able to guard them from stumbling, and to set you before the presence of his glory without blemish in exceeding joy, ²⁵ to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and for ever. Amen.

¹⁶ But in very deed for this cause have I made thee to stand, to show thee My power, and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth. ¹⁷ As yet exaltest thou thyself against My people, that thou wilt not let them go?

¹¹ Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; yea, for that they dealt proudly against them.'

²² For a fire is kindled in My nostril, and burneth unto the depths of the nether-world, and devoureth the earth with her produce, and setteth ablaze the foundations of the mountains.

²³ It shall be for the filling of his belly; He shall cast the fierceness of His wrath upon him, and shall cause it to rain upon him into his flesh.

²² Yea, it hurleth at him, and spareth not; he would fain flee from its power.

⁴⁹ He sent forth upon them the fierceness of His anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, a sending of messengers of evil. ⁵⁰ He levelled a path for His anger; He spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

⁶ Cast forth lightning, and scatter them; send out Thine arrows, and discomfit them.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. ¹² For the LORD of hosts hath a day upon all that is proud and lofty, and upon all that is lifted up, and it shall be brought low;

¹⁷ And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹² Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed His whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks. ¹³ For he hath said: by the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent; in that I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and have brought down as one mighty the inhabitants; ¹⁴ And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped. ¹⁵ Should the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? Should the saw magnify itself against him that moveth it? as if a rod should move them that lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up him that is not wood. ¹⁶ Therefore will the Lord, the LORD of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire. ¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. ¹⁸ And the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, he will consume both soul and body; and it shall be as when a sick man wasteth away. ¹⁹ And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them down.

²⁵ Therefore He poured upon him the fury of His anger, and the strength of battle; and it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not, and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

² 'Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said: I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the heart of the seas; yet thou art man, and not God, though thou didst set thy heart as the heart of God -

³⁷ (4:34) Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven; for all His works are truth, and His ways justice; and those that walk in pride He is able to abase.'

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him; ²¹ and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that God Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that He setteth up over it whomsoever He will. ²² And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this; ²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy consorts and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified;

³ The pride of thy heart hath beguiled thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, thy habitation on high; that sayest in thy heart: 'Who shall bring me down to the ground?' ⁴ Though thou make thy nest as high as the eagle, and though thou set it among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.

⁶ Who can stand before His indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder before Him.

¹ (3:19) For, behold, the day cometh, it burneth as a furnace; and all the proud, and all that work wickedness, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall set them ablaze, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

¹⁴ I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than indeed the other; for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled, but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²² And the people shouted, saying, The voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not glory to God; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

⁸ but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, shall be wrath and indignation, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek,

⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another. Gird yourselves with humility, for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,

⁷ The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich; He bringeth low, He also lifteth up.

²⁰ Desire not the night, when peoples are cut off in their place.

¹² (60:14) Through God we shall do valiantly; for He it is that will tread down our adversaries.

²⁵ The LORD will pluck up the house of the proud; but He will establish the border of the widow.

³ If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth; and if a tree fall in the south, or in the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there shall it be.

⁶ I do send him against an ungodly nation, and against the people of My wrath do I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

¹¹ And I will visit upon the world their evil, and upon the wicked their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the tyrants.

³ 'I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the peoples there was no man with Me; yea, I trod them in Mine anger, and trampled them in My fury; and their lifeblood is dashed against My garments, and I have stained all My raiment.

⁵ And they shall be as mighty men, treading down in the mire of the streets in the battle, and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them; and the riders on horses shall be confounded.

³ (3:21) And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I do make, saith the LORD of hosts.

²⁵ to take the portion in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.

²⁰ And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the couch whereon Esther was. Then said the king: 'Will he even force the queen before me in the house?' As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

¹³ Oh that Thou wouldest hide me in the nether-world, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until Thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! -

¹³ But they that are godless in heart lay up anger; they cry not for help when He bindeth them.

¹⁴ (49:15) Like sheep they are appointed for the nether-world; death shall be their shepherd; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form shall be for the nether-world to wear away, that there be no habitation for it.

¹⁰ Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of His majesty.

⁴⁴ He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

³ (44:4) For not by their own sword did they get the land in possession, neither did their own arm save them; but Thy right hand, and Thine arm, and the light of Thy countenance, because Thou wast favourable unto them.

⁶ (44:7) For I trust not in my bow, neither can my sword save me.

²⁹ He giveth power to the faint; and to him that hath no might He increaseth strength.

⁶ For while we were yet weak, in due season Christ died for the ungodly.

⁴ but God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, ⁵ even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have ye been saved), ⁶ and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus: ⁷ that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus: ⁸ for by grace have ye been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, ⁹ not of works, that no man should glory.

²⁴ And God said: 'Let the earth bring forth the living creature after its kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after its kind.' And it was so. ²⁵ And God made the beast of the earth after its kind, and the cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good. ²⁶ And God said: 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.'

⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

²⁰ Surely the mountains bring him forth food, and all the beasts of the field play there.

¹⁴ Who causeth the grass to spring up for the cattle, and herb for the service of man; to bring forth bread out of the earth,

²³ (41:15) The flakes of his flesh are joined together; they are firm upon him; they cannot be moved.

⁴ Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;

¹³ By His breath the heavens are serene; His hand hath pierced the slant serpent.

³³ (41:25) Upon earth there is not his like, who is made to be fearless.

¹² (7:13) If a man turn not, He will whet His sword, He hath bent His bow, and made it ready;

²⁴ How manifold are Thy works, O LORD! In wisdom hast Thou made them all; the earth is full of Thy creatures.

¹ In that day the LORD with His sore and great and strong sword will punish leviathan the slant serpent, and leviathan the tortuous serpent; and He will slay the dragon that is in the sea.

¹⁵ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.

²⁶ There go the ships; there is leviathan, whom Thou hast formed to sport therein.

⁸ Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh the mountains to spring with grass. ⁹ He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.

⁶ And the rivers shall become foul; the streams of Egypt shall be minished and dried up; the reeds and flags shall wither. ⁷ The mosses by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all that is sown by the Nile, shall become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

⁷ And the parched land shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the habitation of jackals herds shall lie down, it shall be an enclosure for reeds and rushes.

⁴⁰ And ye shall take you on the first day the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm-trees, and boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook, and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.

⁷ Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the brook of the willows.

⁵ He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters, he set it as a slip.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou goest unto Zoar.

¹⁵ and when they that bore the ark were come unto the Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bore the ark were dipped in the brink of the water - for the Jordan overfloweth all its banks all the time of harvest -

⁸ (55:9) I would haste me to a shelter from the stormy wind and tempest.'

¹⁶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a costly corner-stone of sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste.

²⁵ I have digged and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.

¹ (40:25) Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fish-hook? or press down his tongue with a cord? ² (40:26) Canst thou put a ring into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a hook?
