¹ It happened that in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came, he and his army, against Jerusalem. He encamped against it and built siege works against it all around.

¹ In his days, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up because Jehoiakim had become his servant for three years; then he turned and rebelled against him.

¹⁰ At that time, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and the city came under the siege.

¹⁵ And Jehozadak went into exile when Yahweh sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁷ Therefore he brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, and he killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He showed no mercy on a young man, a virgin, the elderly, or decrepit. He delivered all into his hand. ¹⁸ And all the vessels of the house of God, the great and the small, the storehouses of the house of Yahweh, and the storehouses of the king and his princes, these all he brought to Babylon. ¹⁹ And they burned the house of God. And they shattered the walls of Jerusalem and burned its citadels with fire and destroyed all the vessels of its treasuries. ²⁰ And he took _⌊those who escaped the sword_⌋* to Babylon. And they became servants to him and to his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, ²¹ to fulfill the word of Yahweh by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land has enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days of desolation it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

³ And I will encamp _⌊in a circle_⌋* against you, and I will lay siege to you with towers* and I will raise up siegeworks against you.

⁸ "But it will be that the nation or kingdom that will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put his neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, and with the famine, and with the plague," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "until I have destroyed it with my hand.

²⁴ Look, the siege ramps have come up to the city to capture it, and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it, because of the sword, the famine, and the plague, and what you spoke happened, and look, you are seeing it.*

²⁸ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh: "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.

¹ The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and all his army, with all the kingdoms of the earth under the dominion of his hand, and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and against all its cities, _⌊saying_⌋,* ² "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: 'Go and say to Zedekiah the king of Judah, now you must say to him, "Thus says Yahweh: 'Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire. ³ And you will not escape from his hand, but surely you will be captured, and into his hand you will be given, and _⌊you will see the king of Babylon eye to eye_⌋,* and _⌊you will speak face to face with him_⌋,* and to Babylon you will go.' ⁴ However, hear the word of Yahweh, O Zedekiah, the king of Judah. Thus says Yahweh concerning you: 'You will not die by the sword. ⁵ In peace you will die, and as there was burning for your ancestors,* the former kings who were _⌊before you_⌋,* so they will burn for you, and they will lament for you, "Alas, lord!" For the word I have spoken,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh." '" ⁶ Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Zedekiah the king of Judah all these words in Jerusalem

¹ In the ninth year of Zedekiah, the king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and laid siege to it. ² In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the city was taken by assault. ³ And all the officials of the king of Babylon came and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim the chief officer, Nergal-sharezer the high official, with all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. ⁴ _⌊And then_⌋* _⌊when_⌋* Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all _⌊the soldiers_⌋* with him, they fled and went out at night from the city by the way of the garden of the king through the gate between the walls. And they went out toward the Jordan Valley. ⁵ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And they took him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath. And he pronounced _⌊sentence_⌋* on him. ⁶ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at Riblah before his eyes. The king of Babylon also slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. ⁷ Then he blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and tied him up with bronze fetters to bring him to Babylon. ⁸ And the Chaldeans burned the palace* of the king and the houses* of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. ⁹ Then the rest of the people who were left in the city, and those deserting who had deserted to him, and the rest of the people who remained, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* deported to Babylon. ¹⁰ And some of the poor people, _⌊who had nothing_⌋,* Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* left in the land of Judah. And he gave them vineyards and fields on that day.

¹⁰ and say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: "Look, I am going to send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden. And he will spread out his canopy over them.

³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me and sucked me dry; he has made me an empty vessel; he has swallowed me like the sea monster; he has filled his belly with my delicacies; he has rinsed me.

⁴ _⌊And then_⌋* in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came against Jerusalem, he and all his army. And they laid siege to it, and built siege works* against it all around. ⁵ So the city came _⌊under siege_⌋* until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. ⁶ In the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the famine in the city became severe and there was no food for the people of the land. ⁷ Then the city was breached, and all _⌊the soldiers_⌋* fled and went out from the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls that are at the garden of the king, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And they went in the direction of the Jordan Valley.* ⁸ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king and they overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him. ⁹ Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and _⌊he passed sentence on him_⌋.* ¹⁰ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at Riblah. ¹¹ Then he made blind the eyes of Zedekiah, and they tied him up with bronze fetters, and the king of Babylon brought him to Babylon. And he put him in _⌊prison_⌋* until the day of his death.

¹ "Now,* son of man,* take for yourself a brick, and you must put it _⌊before you_⌋,* and you must portray on it a city, Jerusalem. ² And you must build against it siege works, and you must build against it a bulwark, and you must heap against it a siege ramp, and you must set up against it camps and put against it a battering ram all around. ³ And take for yourself a plate of iron, and you must place it as a wall of iron between you and the city, and you must set your face against it, and it must be _⌊under siege_⌋,* and you must lay the siege against it; it is a sign for the house of Israel. ⁴ And you, lie down on your left side, and you must put* the guilt of the house of Israel on it. You will carry their guilt the number of days that you will lie on it. ⁵ And I will give to you the years of their guilt according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days, and you must bear the guilt* of the house of Israel. ⁶ When you have completed these, then you must lie a second time on your right side; and you must bear the guilt* of the house of Judah forty days, a day for each year, a day for each year I give it to you. ⁷ And toward the siege of Jerusalem you must set your face and your bared arm; then you must prophesy against it. ⁸ Now* look! I will put on you cords, and you may not turn yourself from one side to your other side until you complete the days of your siege.

²² In his right hand is the divination for Jerusalem, to put up battering rams, to open a mouth for slaughter,* _⌊to raise the battle cry_⌋,* to put up battering rams against gates, to build a siege ramp, to build siege works.* ²³ And it will be to them like practicing divination falsely* in their eyes; _⌊they have sworn oaths for themselves_⌋.* But* he will bring their guilt to remembrance so as to seize them. ²⁴ "Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Because you have brought to remembrance your guilt by the uncovering of your transgressions, so that your sins in all of your deeds appear—because of your being remembered, you will be captured in the hand.'

¹ And the word of Yahweh _⌊came_⌋* to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, _⌊saying_⌋,* ² "Son of man,* write for yourself the name of the day, _⌊this very day_⌋.* The king of Babylon laid siege to Jerusalem on exactly this day! ³ And _⌊deliver a proverb_⌋* to _⌊the rebellious house_⌋,* and you must say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Place the pot! Place it and also pour water into it. ⁴ Gather its pieces to it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder, fill it with choice bones; ⁵ take the choicest of the flock, and also pile the bones* under it; _⌊boil it vigorously_⌋;* indeed,* its bones boiled in the midst of it." '" ⁶ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Woe to the city of bloodguilt! A pot that has its rust in it; _⌊its rust did not go out from it_⌋.* Bring it out _⌊piece by piece_⌋;* _⌊one is as good as another_⌋.* ⁷ For her blood was in the midst of her; _⌊she put it on a bare rock_⌋;* she did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.* ⁸ To stir up rage, to avenge myself through vengeance, I placed its blood on the barrenness of a rock, _⌊so that it may not be covered_⌋."* ⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Woe to the city of bloodguilt! I, even I, will make the pile of wood great! ¹⁰ Pile up the logs; kindle the fire; finish cooking the meat, and mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned.* ¹¹ And _⌊make it stand_⌋* empty upon its burning coals so that it may become hot, and its copper may become molten and be melted in the midst of it,* so that its uncleanness and its rust be consumed. ¹² Through effort she has caused weariness; _⌊its thick rust_⌋* went not out of it. Its rust! Into the fire with its rust! ¹³ In your uncleanness is obscene conduct, because I cleansed you, but you were not clean from your uncleanness; you will not be clean again until _⌊I fully vent my rage_⌋* on you. ¹⁴ I, Yahweh, I have spoken. It is coming, and I did it; I will not disregard, and I will not take pity, and I will not reconsider. According to your ways and according to your deeds they will judge you!"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

⁷ For thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am bringing to Tyre Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, from the north, the king of kings, with horse and with chariot and with horsemen and his assembly and many people.

¹ * Nebuchadnezzar the king to all of the nations, the peoples and languages that live in the whole earth: "May your prosperity increase! ² It is pleasing to me to recount the signs and wonders that the Most High God worked for me. ³ How great are his signs and wonders, how strong is his kingdom, _⌊an everlasting kingdom_⌋;* and his sovereignty is from generation to generation. ⁴ "I, Nebuchadnezzar, was content in my house and prospering in my palace. ⁵ And I saw a dream and a revelation on my bed and it frightened me, and the visions of my head terrified me. ⁶ And a decree was _⌊sent out_⌋,* ordering that all the wise men of Babylon were to be brought in before me so that they may make known to me the explanation of the dream. ⁷ Then the magicians,* the conjurers,* the _⌊astrologers_⌋* and the diviners came in and I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its explanation.* ⁸ Then _⌊at last_⌋* Daniel came before me _⌊whose name was_⌋* Belteshazzar, _⌊according to_⌋* the name of my god, and _⌊in whom was the spirit of the holy gods_⌋,* _⌊and I related the dream to him_⌋.* ⁹ " 'O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians,* I myself know that the spirit* of the holy gods is in you, and _⌊no mystery is too difficult_⌋* for you. Now tell me the visions of my dream that I saw, and its explanation.* ¹⁰ Now these were the visions of my head as I was lying on my bed: I was _⌊gazing_⌋* and, look, a tree was in the midst of the earth, and its height was exalted. ¹¹ The tree grew and it became strong, and its height reached to heaven,* and _⌊it was visible to the end of the whole earth_⌋.* ¹² Its foliage was beautiful, and its fruit abundant, and in it was provision for all. Under it the animals* of the field sought shade, and in its branches the birds of heaven* nested, and from it all the living beings were fed. ¹³ " 'I was looking in the vision of my head as I lay on my bed, and look, a watcher,* and a holy one, came down from heaven. ¹⁴ He cried _⌊aloud_⌋* and so he said:
"Cut down the tree and chop off its branches; shake off its foliage and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it, and the birds from its branches. ¹⁵ But the stump of its roots leave in the earth, _⌊along with_⌋* a band of iron and bronze; leave it in the grass of the field. And in* the dew of heaven let it* be watered, and with the animals* let his lot be in the grass of the earth. ¹⁶ Let his mind be changed from that of a human,* and let the mind of an animal be given to him, and let seven times pass over him. ¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the decision by the command of the holy ones, _⌊in order that_⌋* the living will know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdom of humankind, and _⌊to whomever_⌋* he wills he gives it, and he even sets the humblest of men over it." ¹⁸ " 'This is the dream that I, Nebuchadnezzar the king, saw. Now* you, Belteshazzar, declare its explanation, _⌊for_⌋* all of the wise men of my kingdom were not able to make the explanation known to me, but you are able because the spirit of holy gods is in you.'

⁴³ For days will come upon you and your enemies will put up an embankment* against you, and will surround you and press you hard from all directions. ⁴⁴ And they will raze you to the ground, you and your children within you, and will not leave a stone upon a stone within you, _⌊because_⌋* you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
