²⁰ And what was sown on the rocky ground—this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.

¹³ But Saul said, "No one will be put to death on this day, because _⌊today_⌋* Yahweh has provided deliverance in Israel." ¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal, and let us renew the kingship there." ¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal and they made Saul king there before Yahweh in Gilgal. They sacrificed fellowship offerings there before Yahweh. Then Saul rejoiced there greatly along with all the men of Israel.

² And Joash did what was right in the eyes of Yahweh all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

⁶ So the king called Jehoiada the chief, and he said to him, "Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax of Moses, the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel for the tent of the testimony?"

¹⁴ And when they had finished, they brought the remainder of the money before the king and Jehoiada, and they used it for objects for the house of Yahweh, objects for the service and the burnt offerings, dishes, and objects of gold and silver. And they were offering burnt offerings in the house of Yahweh regularly, all the days of Jehoiada.

³⁴ When he killed some of them, then they sought him, and repented and earnestly sought God. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and God Most High their redeemer. ³⁶ But they enticed him with their mouth and lied to him with their tongue. ³⁷ For their heart was not steadfast with him, nor were they faithful to his covenant.

¹² Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. ¹³ They quickly forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.

² Yet* they seek me day by day, and they desire the knowledge of my ways like a nation that _⌊practiced_⌋* righteousness, and had not forsaken the judgment of its God; they ask me for _⌊righteous judgments_⌋,* they desire the closeness of God.

³¹ And they come to you _⌊as people do_⌋,* and they sit _⌊before you_⌋,* and my people hear your words, and they do not do them, for they are showing* passion in their mouth, but their heart is going after ill-gotten gain. ³² Now, look! You are to them like _⌊a sensual song_⌋,* beautiful of voice and _⌊played well on an instrument_⌋,* and they hear your words, _⌊but they are not doing them_⌋.*

⁵ And other seed fell on the rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up at once because it did not have any depth of soil. ⁶ But when* the sun rose it was scorched, and because it did not have enough root, it withered.

¹⁶ And these are like* the ones sown on the rocky ground, who whenever they hear the word immediately receive it with joy. ¹⁷ And they have no root in themselves, but are temporary. Then when* affliction or persecution comes because of the word, immediately they fall away.

²⁰ For Herod was afraid of John, because he* knew him to be a righteous and holy man and protected him. And when he* listened to him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he listened to him gladly.

³⁵ That one was the lamp which was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice for an hour in his light.

¹³ And Simon himself also believed, and after he* was baptized he was _⌊keeping close company with_⌋* Philip. And when he* saw the signs and great miracles that were taking place, he was astonished.

¹⁴ And you did not despise or disdain what was a trial for you in my flesh, but you welcomed me like an angel of God, like Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ So where is your blessing? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me!
