¹ And these are the judgments which you shall set before them. ² If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years. And in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. ³ If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself. If he was married, then his wife shall go out with him. ⁴ If his master has given him a wife, and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. ⁵ And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my sons. I do not want to go out free ⁶ his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door or to the door-post. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him forever. ⁷ And if a man sells his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. ⁸ If she does not please her master, who has betrothed her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no power to sell her to a strange nation, since he has dealt deceitfully with her. ⁹ And if he has betrothed her to his son, he shall deal with her as with daughters. ¹⁰ If he takes himself another wife, her food, her clothing, and her duty of marriage shall not be lessened. ¹¹ And if he does not do these three to her, then she shall go out free without money. ¹² He that strikes a man, so that he dies, shall be surely put to death. ¹³ And if a man does not lie in wait, but God delivers him into his hand, then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee. ¹⁴ But if a man comes presumptuously upon his neighbor to slay him with guile, you shall take him from My altar, so that he may die. ¹⁵ And he that strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. ¹⁶ And he that steals a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. ¹⁷ And he that curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. ¹⁸ And if men strive together, and one strikes another with a stone, or with his fist, and he does not die, but keeps his bed; ¹⁹ if he rises again and walks abroad upon his staff, then he that struck him shall be set free. Only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be completely healed. ²⁰ And if a man strikes his servant, or his maidservant, with a rod, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. ²¹ But if he continues a day or two, he shall not be punished. For he is his money. ²² If men strive and strike a pregnant woman, so that her child comes out, and there is no injury, he shall surely be punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him. And he shall pay as the judges say ²³ And if any injury occurs, then you shall give life for life, ²⁴ eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, ²⁵ burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. ²⁶ And if a man strike the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, so that it perishes, he shall let him go free on account of his eye. ²⁷ And if he strikes out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth, he shall let him go free on account of his tooth. ²⁸ If an ox gores a man or woman so that they die, then the ox shall surely be stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten. But the owner of the ox shall be set free. ²⁹ But if the ox was apt to gore in time past, and his owner has been told, and he has not kept him in, but that he has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. ³⁰ If there is laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatever is laid upon him. ³¹ Whether he has gored a son, or has gored a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him. ³² If the ox shall gore a manservant or a maidservant, he shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned. ³³ And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls in it, ³⁴ the owner of the pit shall make it good and give silver to its owner. And the dead shall be his. ³⁵ And in the event the ox of a man damages the ox of a neighbor, so that it dies, then they shall sell the living ox, and they shall divide the money of it. And they shall also divide the dead ox. ³⁶ Or if it is known that the ox has been apt to gore in time past, and his owner has not kept him in, he shall surely pay ox for ox. And the dead shall be his own.

⁷ And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which Jehovah commanded him.

³ And Moses came and told the people all the Words of Jehovah, and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, All the words which Jehovah has said, we will do. ⁴ And Moses wrote all the Words of Jehovah, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar below the mountain and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

⁵ And you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live in them. I am Jehovah.

²⁶ You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, neither the native, nor any stranger that lives among you.

³⁷ And you shall observe all My statutes and all My judgments, and do them. I am Jehovah.

²² You shall therefore keep all My statutes and all My judgments, and do them, so that the land where I bring you to live shall not spit you out.

²⁴ then the congregation shall judge between the one who kills and the revenger of blood according to these judgments.

¹³ These are the commandments and the judgments which Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses to the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab beside Jordan, at Jericho.

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as Jehovah my God commanded me, so that you should do so in the land where you go to possess it.

⁸ And who is a great nation whose statutes and judgments are so righteous as all this Law which I set before you today?

¹⁴ And Jehovah commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments so that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it.

⁴⁵ These are the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments which Moses spoke to the sons of Israel after they came forth out of Egypt,

¹ And Moses called all Israel and said to them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, so that you may learn them and keep and do them.

³¹ But as for you, you stand here by Me, and I will speak to you all the commandments and the statutes and the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I am giving them, to possess it.

¹ And these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which Jehovah our God commanded to teach you so that you might do them in the land where you go, to possess it,

²⁰ When your son asks you in time to come, saying, What are the testimonies, and the statutes and the judgments which Jehovah our God has commanded you?

¹² As to this house which you are building, if you will walk in My statutes and do My judgments and keep all My commandments, to walk in them, then I will perform My work with you which I spoke to David your father.

¹⁰ And whatever cause shall come to you from your brothers that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, you shall even warn them so that they do not sin against Jehovah, and wrath come on you and your brothers. Do this and you shall not sin.

¹³ And You came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from Heaven, and gave them right judgments and true laws, good statutes and commandments. ¹⁴ And You made known to them Your holy sabbath, and commanded them commandments, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses Your servant.

²⁹ were holding fast to their brothers, their honored ones. And they entered into a curse and into an oath, to walk in God's Law which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to be careful to do all the commandments of Jehovah our Lord, and His judgments and His statutes.

¹⁹ He shows His Word to Jacob, His Precepts and His judgments to Israel.

¹¹ And I gave them My statutes and showed them My judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.

²⁵ Also I gave them statutes not good, and judgments by which they should not live.

⁴ Remember the Law of Moses My servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel, the statutes and judgments.

²⁰ teaching them to observe all things, whatever I commanded you. And, behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the world. Amen.

¹ For the rest, then, my brothers, we beseech you and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you have received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, so you would abound more and more.

²⁸ And may God give you of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine.

³⁶ And he said, It is because his name is called Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing. And he said, Have you not reserved a blessing for me?

⁴⁴ But every man's servant that is bought for silver, when you have circumcised him, then he shall eat of it.

³ If the sun is risen upon him, blood is due for him. He should repay in full. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

³⁹ And if your brother who lives beside you has become poor, and is sold to you, you shall not compel him to serve as a bond-servant. ⁴⁰ As a hired servant, as a temporary resident, he shall be with you, and shall serve you until the year of jubilee. ⁴¹ And he shall depart from you, he and his sons with him, and shall return to his own family. And he shall return to the possession of his fathers. ⁴² For they are My servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt. They shall not be sold as a slave. ⁴³ You shall not rule over him with rigor, but shall fear your God. ⁴⁴ Both your male slaves, and your female slaves whom you shall have, shall be of the nations that are all around you. You shall buy male slaves and female slaves from them. ⁴⁵ And also you may buy of the sons of the tenants who are staying with you; and from their families that are with you, whom they fathered in your land. And they shall be your possession.

¹ At the end of every seven years you shall make a release.

¹² If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. ¹³ And when you send him out free from you, you shall not let him go away empty. ¹⁴ You shall richly bestow on him from your flock, and from your grain floor, and from your winepress; with what Jehovah your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. ¹⁵ And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Jehovah your God redeemed you. Therefore I command you this thing today.

¹⁸ It shall not seem hard to you when you send him away from you free, for he has been worth a double hired servant in serving you six years. And Jehovah your God shall bless you in all that you do.

¹⁰ And Moses commanded them, saying: At the end of seven years, at the set time of the year of release, in the Feast of Tabernacles,

¹ And a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, saying, Your servant my husband is dead. And you know that your servant feared Jehovah. And the lender has come to take my two children to himself for slaves.

¹ And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews. ² For certain ones said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain for them, so that we may eat and live. ³ Some also said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses. Let us buy grain because of the famine. ⁴ And some said, We have borrowed money on our lands and vineyards for the king's tax. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our sons like their sons. And, lo, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage, to be slaves, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage. And there is no power for our hand, for other men have our lands and vineyards.

⁸ And I said to them, According to our ability we have redeemed our brothers, the Jews who were sold to the nations. And will you even sell your brothers? Or shall they be sold to us? And they were silent and did not find an answer.

⁸ The Word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after King Zedekiah had cut a covenant with all the people at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them, ⁹ that each man should let his male slave, and each man his female slave, if a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, to go free, that none should enslave a Jew, his brother among them. ¹⁰ And all the rulers obeyed, and all the people who had entered into the covenant allowed them to go free, each man his male slave, and each man his female slave, so that not any should enslave among them any more; and they obeyed and let them go. ¹¹ But afterward they turned and caused the slaves and slave women whom they had let go free, to return! And they subjected them for slaves and slave women. ¹² So the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, ¹³ So says Jehovah, the God of Israel: I cut a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying, ¹⁴ At the end of seven years each man should let go his brother, a Hebrew, and who has been sold to him. And when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you. But your fathers did not listen to me, nor bow down their ears. ¹⁵ And you had turned today, and had done right in My sight to call for liberty, each man to his neighbor. And you had cut a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name. ¹⁶ But you turned and defiled My name, and each man caused his slave, and each man caused his slave woman, whom you had set free to do as they pleased, to return. And you brought them into service to be slaves and slave women to you. ¹⁷ So Jehovah says this: You have not listened to Me to proclaim liberty each man to his brother, and each man to his neighbor! Behold, I call for freedom for you, says Jehovah, to the sword, to the plague, and to the famine. And I will cause you to be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

²⁵ But as he had nothing to pay, his lord commanded that he, and his wife and children, and all that he had, be sold, and payment be made.

²⁰ for you are bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.

¹⁶ And if he says to you, I will not go away from you, because he loves you and your house, because it has been good for him with you; ¹⁷ then you shall take an awl and put it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. And also to your slave-girl you shall do so.

¹³ O Jehovah our God, lords besides You have had the rule over us; but by You only will we make mention of Your name.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constrains us, judging this, that if one died for all, then all died; ¹⁵ and He died for all, that the living ones may live no more to themselves, but to Him who died for them and having been raised.

¹² For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast. And I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. I am Jehovah.

²¹ And you shall look out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain. And place such over them to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ²² And let them judge the people at all times. And it shall be, every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge. And make it easier for yourself, and they shall bear with you. ²³ If you will do this thing, and God command you, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. ²⁴ And Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. ²⁵ And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ²⁶ And they judged the people at all times. The hard causes they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

²² If men strive and strike a pregnant woman, so that her child comes out, and there is no injury, he shall surely be punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him. And he shall pay as the judges say

⁸ If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges, whether he has put his hand to his neighbor's goods. ⁹ For every case of trespass, for ox, for ass, for sheep, for clothing, for any kind of lost thing, which another claims to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges. Whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double to his neighbor.

²⁸ You shall not revile God, nor curse the ruler of your people.

²³ The land shall not be sold forever; for the land is Mine. For you are strangers and pilgrims with Me.

⁴⁰ As a hired servant, as a temporary resident, he shall be with you, and shall serve you until the year of jubilee.

⁵ And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal-peor. ⁶ And behold! One of the sons of Israel came and brought to his brothers a woman of Midian, before the eyes of Moses, and before all the congregation of the sons of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. ⁷ And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation and took a spear in his hand. ⁸ And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman, through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the sons of Israel.

¹⁶ And I commanded your judges at that time saying, Hear the causes between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the stranger with him.

¹⁷ then you shall take an awl and put it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. And also to your slave-girl you shall do so.

¹⁸ You shall appoint judges and officers for yourself in all your gates which Jehovah your God gives you, tribe by tribe. And they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

¹⁷ then both the men who are disagreeing shall stand before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges which shall be in those days. ¹⁸ And the judges shall make careful inquiry. And behold, if the witness is a false witness and has testified falsely against his brother,

²² But Hannah did not go up. For she said to her husband, Until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him so that he may appear before Jehovah and stay there forever.

¹ And it happened when Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel. ² And the name of his first-born was Joel, and the name of his second was Abiah, judges in Beer-sheba.

¹² And Achish believed David, saying, He has made himself to be hated among his people Israel, and has become my servant forever.

² And David said to Achish, Surely you shall know what your servant can do. And Achish said to David, And I will make you keeper of my head forever.

⁷ And they spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.

⁶ Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened; burnt offering and sin offering You have not asked. ⁷ Then I said, Lo, I come, in the volume of the Book it is written of Me; ⁸ I delight to do Your will, O My God; and Your Law is within My heart.

²⁶ And I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterwards you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.

³ Her rulers within her are roaring lions; her judges evening wolves. They do not gnaw bones for the morning.

⁸ and when Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please Isaac his father;

²⁹ And Moses said, Behold, I will go out from you, and I will pray to Jehovah that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. But do not let Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to Jehovah.

⁷ And who is the man that has become engaged to a wife and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.

¹¹ and see among the captives a beautiful woman, and have a desire to her, that you would take her for your wife, ¹² then you shall bring her home to your house. And she shall shave her head and dress her nails. ¹³ And she shall put off the clothing of her captivity, and shall remain in your house, and shall sorrow for her father and her mother a full month. And after that you shall go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. ¹⁴ And it shall be, if you have no delight in her, then you shall let her go where she will. But you shall not sell her at all for silver, you shall not make a slave of her, because you have humbled her.

¹⁹ if then you have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house today, rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.

³ And his father and his mother said to him, Is there no woman among the daughters of your brothers, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said to his father, Get her for me, for she pleases me very much.

⁶ But the thing was evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.

⁸ And Saul was very angry, and this thing was evil in his eyes. And he said, They have given David ten thousands, and to me they have given only thousands. And what more can he have but the kingdom?

¹⁵ My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a torrent; they pass away as the streams of torrents,

¹¹ Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the holy place of Jehovah, which He loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. ¹² Jehovah will cut off from the tents of Jacob the man who does it; stirring and answering; or offering a food offering to Jehovah of Hosts. ¹³ And this is a second thing you have done, covering the altar of Jehovah with tears, weeping, and groaning, yet not facing toward the food offering, and taking it with delight from your hand. ¹⁴ Yet you say, Why? Because Jehovah has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your companion and your covenant wife. ¹⁵ And did He not make you one? Yet the vestige of the Spirit is in him. And what of the one? He was seeking a godly seed. Then guard your spirit, and do not act treacherously with the wife of your youth.

¹ Now concerning what you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. ² But, because of the fornications, let each have his own wife, and let each have her own husband. ³ Let the husband give to the wife proper kindness, and likewise the wife also to the husband. ⁴ The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. And likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife. ⁵ Do not deprive one another, unless it is with consent for a time, so that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. And come together again so that Satan does not tempt you for your incontinence. ⁶ But I speak this according to permission, not according to commandment.

⁶ Whoever sheds man's blood, his blood shall be shed by man; for He made man in the image of God.

¹³ You shall not kill.

¹⁷ And he who kills any man shall surely be put to death.

¹⁶ And if he strikes him with an instrument of iron, so that he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁷ And if he strikes him by throwing a stone, with which he may die, and if he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁸ Or if he strikes him with a hand weapon of wood, with which he may die, and if he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁹ The revenger of blood himself shall kill the murderer. When he meets him, he shall kill him. ²⁰ And if he stabs him from hatred, or hurls at him by lying in wait, so that he dies, ²¹ or in hatred strikes him with his hand so that he dies, he who struck him shall surely he put to death. He is a murderer. The revenger of blood will kill the murderer when he meets him. ²² But if he thrusts him suddenly without hatred, or has thrown something on him without lying in wait, ²³ or with any stone with which a man may die if he does not see, and throws it upon him so that he dies, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm, ²⁴ then the congregation shall judge between the one who kills and the revenger of blood according to these judgments.

³⁰ Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses. But one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. ³¹ And you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. But he shall surely be put to death.

¹¹ But if a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes his life from him, so that he dies, and flees to one of these cities, ¹² then the elders of his city shall send and bring him away from there and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood so that he may die. ¹³ Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away innocent blood from Israel, so that it may go well with you.

¹³ And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said to David, Jehovah also has put away your sin; you shall not die.

⁵² Then Jesus said to him, Put up your sword again into its place; for all who take the sword shall perish with a sword.

¹⁰ Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, When you have come over Jordan into the land of Canaan, ¹¹ then you shall choose cities to be cities of refuge for you, so that the slayer who kills any person through error may flee there. ¹² And they shall be to you cities for refuge from the avenger, so that the manslayer does not die until he stands before the congregation in judgment. ¹³ And of those cities which you shall give, you shall have six cities for refuge. ¹⁴ You shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and you shall give three cities in the land of Canaan to be cities of refuge. ¹⁵ These six cities shall be a refuge for the sons of Israel, and for the stranger, and for anyone who stays among them, so that everyone who kills any person through error may flee there. ¹⁶ And if he strikes him with an instrument of iron, so that he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁷ And if he strikes him by throwing a stone, with which he may die, and if he dies, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁸ Or if he strikes him with a hand weapon of wood, with which he may die, and if he dies, he is a murderer. The revenger of blood will kill the murderer when he meets him. ²² But if he thrusts him suddenly without hatred, or has thrown something on him without lying in wait, ²³ or with any stone with which a man may die if he does not see, and throws it upon him so that he dies, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm, ²⁴ then the congregation shall judge between the one who kills and the revenger of blood according to these judgments. ²⁵ And the congregation shall deliver the one who kills out of the hand of the revenger of blood. And the congregation shall send him back to the city of his refuge, to which he had fled. And he shall stay in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil. ²⁶ But if the one who killed shall at any time come outside the border of the city of his refuge to which he had fled, ²⁷ and if the avenger of blood finds him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and if the avenger of blood kills the slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood, ²⁸ because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the one who killed shall return to the land of his possession. ²⁹ So these things shall be for a statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. ³⁰ Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses. But one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. ³¹ And you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. But he shall surely be put to death. ³² And you shall take no ransom for him who has fled to the city of his refuge, to return to live in the land until the death of the high priest. ³³ So you shall not defile the land in which you are. For blood defiles the land. And the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of him that shed it. ³⁴ So do not defile the land which you shall inhabit, in which I dwell. For I Jehovah dwell among the sons of Israel.

⁴¹ Then Moses separated three cities on this side Jordan towards the sunrise, ⁴² so that the slayer might flee there, he who should kill his neighbor through error and who did not hate him in times past, and he fleeing to one of these cities might live. ⁴³ They were Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

¹ When Jehovah your God has cut off the nations whose land Jehovah your God gives you, and when you take their place and live in their cities and in their houses, ² you shall separate three cities for you in the middle of your land, which Jehovah your God gives you to possess it. ³ You shall prepare you a way, and divide the borders of your land which Jehovah your God gives you to inherit, into three parts, so that every slayer may flee there. ⁴ And this is the case of the slayer who shall flee there that he may live: whoever in error kills his neighbor whom he did not hate him before, ⁵ even he who goes into the wood with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand brings a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the wood and lights on his neighbor so that he dies; he shall flee to one of those cities and live, ⁶ so that the avenger of the blood may not pursue the slayer while his heart is hot, and overtake him because the way is long, and kill him, and he had no sentence worthy of death, for he did not hate him in time past. ⁷ Therefore I command you saying, You shall separate three cities for you. ⁸ And if Jehovah your God makes your border larger, as He has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which He promised to give to your fathers; ⁹ if you will keep all these commandments which I command you today, to do them, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk always in His ways, then you shall add to yourself three more cities to these three, ¹⁰ so that innocent blood may not be shed in your land which Jehovah your God gives you for an inheritance, and blood may not be on you.

² Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, Appoint cities of refuge for you, as I have spoken to you by the hand of Moses; ³ that the manslayer who in innocence strikes anyone mortally, without knowing, may flee there. And they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. ⁴ And he shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city. And they shall take him into the city to themselves and make him a place, and he shall live with them. ⁵ And if the avenger of blood pursues him, then they shall not deliver the manslayer into his hand, for he has struck his neighbor without knowing, and did not hate him in past time. ⁶ And he shall live in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest who is in those days. Then the manslayer shall return and come to his city, and to his house, to the city from where he fled. ⁷ And they set apart Kadesh in Galilee, in the hills of Naphtali; and Shechem in the hills of Ephraim; and Kirjath-arba (it is Hebron) in the hills of Judah. ⁸ And beyond the Jordan, at Jericho eastward, they gave Bezer in the wilderness, on the tableland out of the tribe of Reuben; and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. ⁹ These were the appointed cities for all the sons of Israel, and for the alien who was living in their midst, that he who had killed anyone without knowing might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

⁴ And the men of David said to him, Behold, this is the day of which Jehovah said to you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand so that you may do to him as it shall seem good to you. And David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe secretly.

¹⁰ Behold, your eyes have seen today how Jehovah had delivered you today into my hand in the cave. And one said to kill you. But I had pity on you. And I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is Jehovah's anointed.

¹⁸ And you have shown this day how you have dealt well with me, because when Jehovah shut me up into your hand, you did not kill me.

¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, sons of Zeruiah? Let him curse, because Jehovah has said to him, Curse David. Who then shall say, Why have you done so?

⁷ Yet he does not plan this, nor does his heart think so. For it is in his heart to destroy and cut off not a few nations.

² The pious has perished from the earth, and there is none upright among men. For they all lie in wait for blood; each one hunts his brother with a net.

³⁰ But the soul who acts with a high hand, whether of the native or of the alien, the same blasphemes Jehovah. And that soul shall be cut off from among his people. ³¹ Because he has despised the Word of Jehovah and has broken His commandment, that soul shall be utterly cut off. His iniquity shall be upon him.

²⁰ And if he stabs him from hatred, or hurls at him by lying in wait, so that he dies, ²¹ or in hatred strikes him with his hand so that he dies, he who struck him shall surely he put to death. He is a murderer. The revenger of blood will kill the murderer when he meets him.

⁴³ So I spoke to you. And you would not hear, but rebelled against the command of Jehovah, and went presumptuously into the hill.

¹² And the man that acts proudly and will not listen to the priest who stands to minister there before Jehovah your God, or to the judge, even that man shall die. And you shall put away the evil from Israel. ¹³ And all the people shall hear and fear, and not be presumptuous any more.

²² When a prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah, if the thing does not follow nor come to pass, that is the thing which Jehovah has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You shall not be afraid of him.

²⁴ Cursed is he who strikes his neighbor secretly. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁷ And Abner returned to Hebron. And Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately. And he struck him there in the belly, and he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

⁹ And Joab said to Amasa, Are you well, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. ¹⁰ And Amasa was not on guard against the sword that was in Joab's hand. And he struck him with it in the belly, and poured out his bowels to the ground. And he did not strike him again. And he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

⁵⁰ And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose and went and caught hold on the horns of the altar. ⁵¹ And it was told to Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon. For, lo, he has caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not kill his servant with the sword.

²⁸ And the report came to Joab. For Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he did not turn after Absalom. And Joab fled to the tabernacle of Jehovah, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. ²⁹ And it was told King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tabernacle of Jehovah, and, behold, he is by the altar. And Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go fall on him. ³⁰ And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of Jehovah, and said to him, So says the king, come forth! And he said, No, but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and so he answered me. ³¹ And the king said to him, Do as he has said, and fall on him, and bury him, so that you may take away the innocent blood which Joab shed, from me and from the house of my father. ³² And Jehovah shall return his blood on his own head, who fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David not knowing of it, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. ³³ Yea, He shall turn back their blood on the head of Joab, and on the head of his seed forever. But on David, and on his seed, and on his house, and on his throne, there shall be peace forever from Jehovah. ³⁴ And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and fell on him and killed him. And he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

¹⁵ And Jehoiada the priest commanded the rulers of the hundreds, those set over the army, and said to them, Take her out between the ranks, and let the one who follows her kill her with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of Jehovah.

¹³ and keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins; do not let them rule over me; then I shall be upright, and I shall be innocent of great transgression.

²⁶ For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins,

¹⁰ and especially those who walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise dominion. They are darers, self-pleasing; not trembling at glories, speaking evil.

¹⁸ If a man has a son who is stubborn and rebels, who will not obey his father's voice or his mother's voice, even when they have chastened him he will not listen to them, ¹⁹ then his father and his mother shall lay hold on him and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place. ²⁰ And they shall say to the elders of his city, this son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey our voice. He is a glutton and a drunkard. ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones so that he dies. So shall you put evil away from you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.

¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father and despises to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

⁹ knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous one, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

²⁸ And men, Midianites traders, came by. And they drew up Joseph and took him out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.

¹⁵ For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

⁴ If the theft is certainly found in his hand alive, whether it is an ox, or an ass, or a sheep, he shall restore double.

⁷ If a man is found stealing a person of his brothers, the sons of Israel, and makes a slave of him, or sells him, then that thief shall die. And you shall put evil away from among you.

¹⁰ for fornicators, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and anything else that is contrary to sound doctrine,

¹² the cargo of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and every ivory vessel, and every vessel of very precious wood, and of bronze, and of iron, and of marble,

⁹ And any man who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be on him. ¹⁰ And a man who commits adultery with a man's wife, who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

¹⁶ Cursed is he who thinks lightly of his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁰ Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in deep darkness.

³ But He answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, saying, "Honor your father and mother"; and, "He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him die by death." ⁵ But you say, Whoever says to his father or mother, Whatever you would gain from me, It is a gift to God; ⁶ and in no way he honors his father or his mother. And you voided the commandment of God by your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, "Honor your father and your mother." And, "Whoever curses father or mother, let him die the death." ¹¹ But you say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban! (that is, A gift to God, whatever you may profit by me)

¹³ And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together. And he said to the guilty one, Why do you strike your neighbor?

²⁰ And if a man strikes his servant, or his maidservant, with a rod, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished.

¹¹ When men strive together with one another, and the wife of the one draws near to deliver her husband out of the hand of him who strikes him, and puts forth her hand and takes him by the secret parts,

⁶ And your handmaid had two sons, and the two of them fought together in the field. And there was no deliverer between them, but the one struck the other and killed him.

²⁹ Let it whirl about the head of Joab, and on all his father's house. And let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls on the sword, or who lacks bread.

⁴ So says Jehovah of Hosts: There shall yet be old men and old women living in the streets of Jerusalem, and each man with his staff in his hand because of their many days.

¹⁵ And Jehovah said to him, Therefore whoever kills Cain shall be avenged seven times. And Jehovah set a mark upon Cain so that anyone who found him should not kill him.

²⁴ For Cain is avenged seven times, and Lamech seventy-seven times.

²⁶ And if a man strike the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, so that it perishes, he shall let him go free on account of his eye. ²⁷ And if he strikes out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth, he shall let him go free on account of his tooth.

¹⁹ The revenger of blood himself shall kill the murderer. When he meets him, he shall kill him.

³⁰ Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses. ¹⁹ A servant will not be corrected by words, for though he understands, he will not answer.

³ They say, Why have we fasted, and You do not see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and You take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and crush all your laborers. ⁴ Behold, you fast for strife and debate, and to strike with the fist of wickedness; you shall not fast as you do today, to make your voice to be heard on high.

⁴ For it is a servant of God to you for good. For if you practice evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword in vain; for it is a servant of God, a revenger for wrath on him who does evil.

⁴⁴ Both your male slaves, and your female slaves whom you shall have, shall be of the nations that are all around you. You shall buy male slaves and female slaves from them. ⁴⁵ And also you may buy of the sons of the tenants who are staying with you; and from their families that are with you, whom they fathered in your land. And they shall be your possession. ⁴⁶ And you shall take them as an inheritance for your sons after you, to hold for a possession; you may lay service on them forever. But you shall not rule over your brothers, the sons of Israel, over one another, with harshness.

³⁰ If there is laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatever is laid upon him.

¹⁸ And the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him. ¹⁹ And they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the girl, because he has brought an evil name on a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He may not put her away all his days.

¹⁹ And if a man causes a blemish in his neighbor, as he has done, so shall it be done to him:

³¹ And you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. But he shall surely be put to death.

¹⁹ And if a man causes a blemish in his neighbor, as he has done, so shall it be done to him: ²⁰ break for break, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him.

⁶ And Adoni-bezek fled. And they ran after him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. ⁷ And Adoni-bezek said, Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have gathered under my table. As I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

³³ And Samuel said, As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women. And Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

³⁸ You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." ³⁹ But I say to you, Do not resist evil. But whoever shall strike you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. ⁴⁰ And to him desiring to sue you, and to take away your tunic, let him have your coat also.

² For with whatever judgment you judge, you shall be judged; and with whatever measure you measure out, it shall be measured to you again.

³⁸ Give, and it shall be given to you, good measure pressed down and shaken together and running over, they shall give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you measure, it shall be measured to you again.

⁶ since they have poured out the blood of the saints and prophets; and You gave them blood to drink, for they were deserving.

¹⁹ You shall not pervert judgment; you shall not respect persons, nor take a gift. For a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous.

¹³ If I despised the cause of my man servant or of my slave-girl, when they argued with me; ¹⁴ what then shall I do when God rises up? And when He calls me to account, what shall I answer Him? ¹⁵ Did not He who made me in the womb make him? And did not One shape us in the womb?

¹² For He remembers them, the seekers of bloodshed; He forgets not the cry of the humble.

¹⁴ You have seen it; for You behold mischief and vexation, to repay it with Your hand. The poor commits himself to You; You are the Helper of the fatherless.

¹⁸ to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, so that the man of the earth may no more terrify.

¹² For He shall deliver the needy when he cries; and the poor with no helper. ¹³ He shall have pity on the poor and needy and shall save the souls of the needy. ¹⁴ He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence; and their blood shall be precious in His sight.

²² Do not rob the poor, because he is poor; nor press down the afflicted in the gate; ²³ for Jehovah will plead their cause, and strip the soul of those who plunder them.

⁹ And masters, do the same things to them, forbearing threatening, knowing that your Master also is in Heaven. There is no respect of persons with Him.

¹ Masters, give to your slaves what is just and equal, knowing that you also have a Master in Heaven.

⁵ and surely the blood of your lives will I require. At the hand of every animal will I require it, and at the hand of man. At the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. ⁶ Whoever sheds man's blood, his blood shall be shed by man; for He made man in the image of God.

³² If the ox shall gore a manservant or a maidservant, he shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

¹⁵ And if a man lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death. And you shall kill the animal. ¹⁶ And if a woman goes up to any animal and lies down with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal. They shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be on them.

¹ If one is found dead in the land which Jehovah your God gives you to possess it, lying in the field, and it is not known who has killed him, ² then your elders and your judges shall come forth. And they shall measure to the cities which are around him who is dead. ³ And it shall be, the city nearest to the slain one, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer which has not been worked with, which has not drawn in the yoke. ⁴ And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to an ever-flowing stream, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the stream. ⁵ And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come near. For Jehovah your God has chosen them to minister to him, and to bless in the name of Jehovah, and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried. ⁶ And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain one, shall wash their hands over the heifer that has been beheaded in the stream. ⁷ And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen. ⁸ Be merciful, O Jehovah, to Your people Israel, whom You have redeemed, and do not lay innocent blood to the charge of Your people Israel. And the blood shall be forgiven them. ⁹ So you shall put away innocent blood from among you, when you do the right in the sight of Jehovah.

¹² When you count the sons of Israel, of those who are to be counted, then they shall each man give a ransom for his soul to Jehovah when you number them, so that there may be no plague among them when you number them.

⁸ The ransom of a man's life is his riches, but the poor does not hear rebuke.

²⁸ If an ox gores a man or woman so that they die, then the ox shall surely be stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten. But the owner of the ox shall be set free. ²⁹ But if the ox was apt to gore in time past, and his owner has been told, and he has not kept him in, but that he has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.

¹² And I said to them, If it is good, give My price; and if not, let it go. So they weighed My price thirty pieces of silver. ¹³ And Jehovah said to me, Throw it to the potter, the magnificent price at which I was valued by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of Jehovah.

¹⁵ And he said to them, What will you give me, and I will betray Him to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver.

³ Then he who had betrayed Him, seeing that He was condemned, sorrowing, Judas returned the thirty pieces of silver again to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ saying, I have sinned, betraying innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? You see to that. ⁵ And he threw the pieces of silver down in the temple and departed. And he went and hanged himself. ⁶ And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. ⁷ And they took counsel and bought the potter's field with them, to bury strangers in. ⁸ Therefore that field was called, The Field of Blood, to this day. ⁹ Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him who had been priced, whom they of the children of Israel valued,

⁷ but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

¹⁵ The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made; their foot is caught in the net which they hid.

⁸⁵ The proud have dug pits for me, which are not according to Your Law.

¹⁰ Whoever causes the righteous man to go astray in an evil way, he himself shall fall into his own pit; but the upright shall inherit good.

⁸ He who digs a pit shall fall into it; and whoever breaks a hedge, a snake shall bite him.

²⁰ Should evil be repaid for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before You to do good for them, and to turn away Your wrath from them.

²² Let a cry be heard from their houses, when You suddenly bring a raiding party on them. For they have dug a pit to take me, and have hidden snares for my feet.

²⁹ But if the ox was apt to gore in time past, and his owner has been told, and he has not kept him in, but that he has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. ³⁰ If there is laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatever is laid upon him.

⁶ If fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that the stacks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field, is burned up, he who kindled the fire shall surely repay in full.

¹⁴ And if a man borrows from his neighbor, and it is hurt, or dies, and the owner of it not with it, he shall surely make it good.
