¹⁵ And the rulers were angry with Jeremiah and killed* him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for they had made that the prison.

And they let Jeremiah down with cords. And in the pit there was no water, but mud and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

⁴ However I sent all my servants the prophets to you*, rising up early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate. ⁵ But they listened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.

¹⁶ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Jehovah, we will not listen to you.

¹⁰ nor have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. ¹¹ Yes, all Israel have transgressed your law, even turning aside, that they should not obey your voice. ¹¹ But they refused to listen and pulled away the shoulder and stopped their ears, that they might not hear. ¹² Yes, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law and the words which Jehovah of hosts had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from Jehovah of hosts.
¹³ And it has happen that, as he cried and they would not hear, so they will cry and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts.

³⁴ Because of this, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise men and scribes, and out of them you will be killing and will be crucifying, and some of them you will be scourging in your synagogues and will be persecuting from city to city, ³⁵ so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Assuredly I am saying to you, All these things will be coming upon this generation.
³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How-often I willed to have gathered together your children in the manner a bird gathers together her brood under her wings, and you did not will it!

⁴⁷ Woe to you! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Consequently, you are testifying and consenting to the works of your fathers, because they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Because of this, the wisdom of God also said, I will be sending prophets and apostles to them, and some out of them they will be killing and will be banishing; ⁵⁰ in order that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the conception of the world, may be sought from this generation; ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel Yes, I say to you, It will be sought from this generation.

³³ However it is essential for me to travel on today and the next-day and in the next day, because it is not acceptable for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.
