¹ It happened, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, "Look, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi." ² Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats. ³ He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave. ⁴ The men of David said to him, "Look, the day of which the LORD said to you, 'Look, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.'" Then David arose, and cut off an edge of Saul's robe secretly. ⁵ It happened afterward, that David's heart struck him, because he had cut off an edge of Saul's robe. ⁶ He said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, since he is the LORD's anointed." ⁷ So David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way. ⁸ Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, saying, "My lord the king." When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and showed respect. ⁹ David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to men's words, saying, 'Look, David seeks your harm?' ¹⁰ Look, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave, but I refused to kill you, and my eye spared you; and I said, 'I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed.' ¹¹ Moreover, my father, look, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it. ¹² May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you. ¹³ As the proverb of the ancients says, 'Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness;' but my hand shall not be on you. ¹⁴ Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? After a dead dog, or one flea? ¹⁵ May the LORD therefore be judge and give sentence between me and you. May he see and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand." ¹⁶ It came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. ¹⁷ He said to David, "You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you. ¹⁸ And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that the LORD had delivered me up into your hand and you did not kill me. ¹⁹ For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may the LORD reward you good for that which you have done this day. ²⁰ Now, look, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. ²¹ Swear now therefore to me by the LORD, that you will not cut off my descendants after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house." ²² David swore to Saul. Saul went home; but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, "Doesnʼt David hide himself with us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?

²⁸ So Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines. Therefore they called that place Rock of Divisions. ²⁹ David went up from there, and lived in the strongholds of En Gedi.

⁵ Take away the wicked from the king's presence, and his throne will be established in righteousness.

¹² If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked.

⁹ Slanderous men have been in you to shed blood; and in you they have eaten on the mountains: in the midst of you they have committed lewdness.

³ They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.

² And Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

² Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

³² The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to kill him.

¹² They also who seek after my life lay snares. Those who seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and meditate deceits all day long.

¹⁸ The high mountains are for the wild goats. The rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

⁶ Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock. They will hear my words, for they are well spoken.

²⁴ Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and look, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, "Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room."

¹ [For the Chief Musician. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." A poem by David, when he fled from Saul, in the cave.] Be merciful to me, God, be merciful to me, for my soul takes refuge in you. Yes, in the shadow of your wings, I will take refuge, until disaster has passed. ² I cry out to God Most High, to God who accomplishes my requests for me. ³ He will send from heaven, and save me, he rebukes the one who is pursuing me. Selah. God will send out his loving kindness and his truth. ⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. ⁵ Be exalted, God, above the heavens. Let your glory be above all the earth. ⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps. My soul is bowed down. They dig a pit before me. They fall into its midst themselves. Selah. ⁷ My heart is steadfast, God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing, yes, I will sing praises. ⁸ Wake up, my glory. Wake up, psaltery and harp. I will wake up the dawn. ⁹ I will give thanks to you, Lord, among the peoples. I will sing praises to you among the nations. ¹⁰ For your great loving kindness reaches to the heavens, and your truth to the skies. ¹¹ Be exalted, God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.

¹ [A contemplation by David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.] I cry with my voice to the LORD. With my voice, I ask the LORD for mercy. ² I pour out my complaint before him. I tell him my troubles. ³ When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my path. In the way in which I walk, they have hidden a snare for me. ⁴ Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul. ⁵ I cried to you, LORD. I said, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." ⁶ Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need. Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than me. ⁷ Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me.

⁷ Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. So Saul said, "God has sold him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering into a town that has gates and bars."

¹⁷ He said to him, "Do not be afraid; for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you; and you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you; and that also Saul my father knows."

¹⁰ Look, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave, but I refused to kill you, and my eye spared you; and I said, 'I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed.'

¹⁸ And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that the LORD had delivered me up into your hand and you did not kill me.

²⁸ Please forgive the trespass of your handmaid. For the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights the battles of the LORD; and evil shall not be found in you all your days. ²⁹ Though men may rise up to pursue you, and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD your God. He will sling out the souls of your enemies, as from the hollow of a sling. ³⁰ It shall come to pass, when the LORD has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and shall have appointed you prince over Israel,

⁸ Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time." ⁹ David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?" ¹⁰ David said, "As the LORD lives, the LORD will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. ¹¹ The LORD forbid that I should put forth my hand against the LORD's anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go."

²³ The LORD will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because the LORD delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn't put forth my hand against the LORD's anointed.

⁸ They brought the head of Ishbaal to David at Hebron, and said to the king, "Look, the head of Ishbaal, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. The LORD has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul and his descendants."

³¹ if the men of my tent have not said, 'Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?'

⁹ Why have you despised the LORD, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hethite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the people of Ammon.

¹⁰ David's heart struck him after that he had numbered the people. David said to the LORD, "I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, LORD, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly."

¹⁹ because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the LORD, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,' says the LORD.

²⁰ because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God;

¹⁴ David said to him, "How is it that you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?"

³ Naboth said to Ahab, "May the LORD forbid me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you."

²⁹ "If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him; ³⁰ (yes, I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

⁴⁴ But I tell you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,

¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you; bless, and do not curse.

¹⁵ See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always seek what is good both for each other and for all.

³³ Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you, that have kept me this day from blood guiltiness, and from avenging myself with my own hand.

⁴ if I have rewarded evil to him who was at peace with me, or oppressed my enemy without cause,

¹⁷ Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all people. ¹⁸ If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all people. ¹⁹ Do not seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for the wrath. For it is written, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord." ²⁰ Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing this you will heap coals of fire on his head." ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

³ Then Abram fell facedown, and God talked with him, saying,

¹² "Honor your father and your mother, that it may be well with you, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

⁴¹ As soon as the boy was gone, David arose from beside the mound, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another, and wept one with another, and David wept the most.

²³ When Abigail saw David, she hurried, and got off from her donkey, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground. ²⁴ She fell at his feet, and said, "On me, my lord, on me be the iniquity; and please let your handmaid speak in your ears. Hear the words of your handmaid.

¹⁷ Saul knew David's voice, and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" David said, "It is my voice, my lord, O king."

⁷ Give therefore to everyone what you owe: taxes to whom taxes are due; customs to whom customs; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor.

¹⁷ Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

¹⁶ "'You shall not go up and down as a slanderer among your people; neither shall you stand against the life of your neighbor. I am the LORD.

¹⁹ Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that God has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is from human beings, they are cursed before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn't cling to the LORD's inheritance, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.'

⁵ I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won't tolerate one who is haughty and conceited.

²⁸ A perverse man stirs up strife, and a gossip separates close friends.

⁴ An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.

⁸ The words of a gossip are like tasty morsels, and they go down into a person's innermost parts.

²³ The north wind brings forth rain: so a backbiting tongue brings an angry face.

²⁰ Without wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, contention ceases. ²¹ As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife. ²² The words of a gossip are as tasty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.

²⁸ A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.

²¹ Also do not take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you; ²² for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

⁴ The men of David said to him, "Look, the day of which the LORD said to you, 'Look, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.'" Then David arose, and cut off an edge of Saul's robe secretly.

⁸ Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time." ⁹ David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?"

¹⁵ "Do not touch my anointed ones. Do my prophets no harm."

²⁷ and David arose and went, he and his men, and killed of the Philistines one hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Mikal his daughter as wife.

¹⁴ David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but the LORD did not deliver him into his hand.

²³ See therefore, and find out all the hiding places where he hides himself, and come back to me when you know for certain, and I will go with you. And it shall happen, if he is in the land, that I will search for him among all the thousands of Judah."

¹⁸ He said, "Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?

²⁰ Now therefore, do not let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of the LORD; for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains."

¹³ His servants came near, and spoke to him, and said, "My father, if the prophet had asked you to do some great thing, wouldn't you have done it? How much rather then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean?'"

¹⁶ And if I lift myself up, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me.

³ LORD, my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands, ⁴ if I have rewarded evil to him who was at peace with me, or oppressed my enemy without cause,

⁷ For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me. Without cause they have dug a pit for my soul.

¹¹ An evil speaker won't be established in the earth. Evil will hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

¹ A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

¹⁸ They hunt our steps, so that we can't go in our streets. Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end has come.

¹⁸ and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Woe to the women who sew pillows on all elbows, and make kerchiefs for the head of persons of every stature to hunt souls. Will you hunt the souls of my people, and save souls alive for yourselves?

² The faithful have vanished from the earth, and there is no one upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood; every man hunts his brother with a net.

²⁵ But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated me without a cause.'

⁵ Sarai said to Abram, "This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. God judge between me and you."

⁵³ The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, judge between us." Then Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

²⁷ I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong by making war against me. The LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ammon."

⁸ "But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God,

⁸ The LORD administers judgment to the peoples. Judge me, LORD, according to my righteousness, and to my integrity that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. The righteous God tests hearts and minds.

¹ [By David.] Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me. Fight against those who fight against me.

¹ Vindicate me, God, and plead my cause against a faithless nation. Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

¹ LORD, you God to whom vengeance belongs, you God to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth.

¹⁹ Do not seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for the wrath. For it is written, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord."

²³ Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

¹⁰ They called out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

¹⁶ By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷ Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.

²⁰ Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.

³³ "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

¹ The men of Ephraim said to him, "Why have you done such a thing to us, not calling us when you went to fight with Midian?" And they argued with him fiercely. ² He said to them, "What have I now done in comparison with you? Isn't the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? ³ God has delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what was I able to do in comparison with you?" Then their anger subsided toward him, when he had said that.

⁴³ The Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with a stick and stones?" And David said, "No, worse than a dog." And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

⁸ Then Abner was very angry over the words of Ishbaal, and said, "Am I a dog's head that belongs to Judah? Until today, is it for myself that I have been doing all these things, showing loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David? And yet you charge me this day with a fault concerning this woman.

²⁰ And then David returned to bless his household. Mikal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David. And she greeted him, and said, "How glorious the king of Israel was today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself."

⁸ He bowed down, and said, "What is your servant, that you should look on such a dead dog as I am?"

⁹ Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please let me go over and take off his head."

⁷ Jezebel his wife said to him, "Do you now govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be merry. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."

¹² May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you.

⁴ David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come.

²² Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, "May the LORD look at it, and repay it."

¹⁵⁴ Plead my cause, and redeem me. Revive me according to your promise.

² Hear, you peoples, all of you. Listen, O earth, and all that is in it: and let the Lord GOD be witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple.

⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my case, and executes judgment for me. He will bring me forth to the light. I will see his righteousness.

⁴ Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, hugged his neck, and kissed him. And they wept.

²⁵ How forcible are words of uprightness. But your reproof, what does it reprove?

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.

¹⁰ They weren't able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

²⁶ Then Judah recognized them, and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." He did not sleep with her again.

²⁷ Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "I have sinned this time. The LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.

²¹ Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Look, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly."

⁶ And he will make your righteousness go forth as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

⁴ saying, "I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it."

¹² Then David said, "Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" The LORD said, "They will deliver you up."

⁸ Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time."

⁸ You have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a large place.

² And he said to his mother, "The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse, and also spoke it in my ears, look, the silver is with me; I took it, but now I will restore it to you." And his mother said, "Blessed be my son by the LORD."

²¹ Saul said, "You are blessed by the LORD; for you have had compassion on me.

²⁵ Then Saul said to David, "You are blessed, my son David. You shall both do mightily, and shall surely prevail." So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

²⁰ The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness. According to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me.

²¹ If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink, ²² for by doing this you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the LORD will reward you.

¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and the LORD has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you."

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, "You son of a perverse rebellious woman, do I not know that you are the companion of the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, your kingdom will not be established. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die."

¹⁷ Abner advised the elders of Israel, saying, "For some time you have wanted David to be king over you. ¹⁸ Now then do it, for the LORD has spoken of David, saying, 'By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.'"

²⁵ Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against Shaddai;

³ And when King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born. ⁵ And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written through the prophet, ⁶ 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come forth a ruler who will shepherd my people, Israel.'"

¹³ Now when they had departed, look, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him."

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the Magi, was exceedingly angry, and sent out, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the Magi.

²³ Now, therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son. But according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have lived as a foreigner."

⁴⁸ Laban said, "This mound is a witness between me and you today." Therefore it was named Galeed

¹⁴ And if I am still alive, deal loyally with me. But if I die, ¹⁵ do not cut off your loyalty from my house forever. And when the LORD cuts off the enemies of David, each one from the face of the earth, ¹⁶ if the name of Jonathan be cut off from the house of David, then may the LORD require it at the hand of the enemies of David." ¹⁷ And Jonathan swore to David again, because he loved him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

⁶ let seven men of his sons be delivered to us, and we will hang them up to the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of the LORD."
