¹ Moreover Elihu answered, ² "Do you think this to be your right, or do you say, 'My righteousness is more than God's,' ³ That you ask, 'What advantage will it be to you? What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?' ⁴ I will answer you, and your companions with you. ⁵ Look to the heavens, and see. See the skies, which are higher than you. ⁶ If you have sinned, what effect do you have against him? If your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to him? ⁷ If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive from your hand? ⁸ Your wickedness may hurt a man as you are, and your righteousness may profit a son of man. ⁹ "By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out. They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty. ¹⁰ But none says, 'Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, ¹¹ who teaches us more than the animals of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the sky?' ¹² There they cry, but none gives answer, because of the pride of evil men. ¹³ Surely God will not hear an empty cry, neither will Shaddai regard it. ¹⁴ How much less when you say you do not see him. The cause is before him, and you wait for him. ¹⁵ But now, because he has not visited in his anger, neither does he greatly regard arrogance. ¹⁶ Therefore Job opens his mouth with empty talk, and he multiplies words without knowledge."

¹⁷ For he bruises me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

⁶ know now that God has subverted me, and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ "Look, I cry out 'Injustice.' but there is no justice.

² "As God lives, who has taken away my right, Shaddai, who has made my soul bitter. ³ (For the length of my life is still in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils); ⁴ surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit. ⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you. Until I die I will not put away my integrity from me. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live.

⁵ For Job has said, 'I am righteous, God has taken away my right:

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

³⁶ But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

²² "He said to him, 'Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I am an exacting man, taking up that which I did not lay down, and reaping that which I did not sow.

²¹ I am blameless. I do not regard myself. I despise my life. ²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and cleanse my hands with lye, ³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes shall abhor me.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still shall not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction.

¹⁵ What is Shaddai, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?'

² For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from Shaddai on high?

⁹ For he has said, 'It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.'

¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocence,

¹⁴ You have said, 'It is vain to serve God;' and 'What profit is it that we have followed his instructions, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?

⁸ Who goes in company with evildoers, and walks with wicked men?

²⁰ One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

⁵ And he brought him outside, and said, "Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So will your descendants be."

²⁷ But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? Look, heaven and the heaven of heavens can't contain you; how much less this house that I have built.

¹² "Isn't God in the heights of heaven? See the height of the stars, how high they are.

⁵ Look, even the moon has no brightness, and the stars are not pure in his sight; ⁶ How much less man, who is a worm, the son of man, who is a worm."

²⁶ Look, God is great, and we do not know him. The number of his years is unsearchable.

¹⁶ Do you know the workings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?

²² Out of the north comes golden splendor. With God is awesome majesty. ²³ We can't reach Shaddai. He is exalted in power. In justice and great righteousness, he will not oppress.

³ When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place; ⁴ what is man, that you think of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

²² It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in; ²³ who brings princes to nothing; who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.

⁹ "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

³ The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. The LORD has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

³⁶ But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul. All those who hate me love death."

¹² If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.

¹⁹ Do they provoke me to anger?" says the LORD. "Do they not provoke themselves, to the confusion of their own faces?"

¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.

² "Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself. ³ Is it any pleasure to Shaddai, that you are righteous? Or does it benefit him, that you make your ways perfect?

² I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing."

¹⁰ Even so you also, when you have done all the things that are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants. We have done our duty.'"

³⁵ "Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?"

² And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great. And you will be a blessing.

²⁴ What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you sweep it away and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it? ²⁵ Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right?" ²⁶ The LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sake." ²⁷ Abraham answered, "Look, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. ²⁸ What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?" He said, "I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there." ²⁹ He spoke to him yet again, and said, "What if there are forty found there?" He said, "I will not do it for the forty's sake." ³⁰ He said, "Oh do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?" He said, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." ³¹ He said, "Look, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake." ³² He said, "Oh do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the ten's sake." ³³ The LORD went his way, as soon as he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

²⁹ It happened, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

¹ But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore the LORD's anger burned against the children of Israel. ² Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, "Go up and spy out the land." The men went up and spied out Ai. ³ They returned to Joshua, and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Do not make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them." ⁴ So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai. ⁵ The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them, and they chased them from before the gate even to the Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.

²⁰ Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man did not perish alone in his iniquity.'"

⁸ Now therefore, take to yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept him, that I not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has."

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn't destroy them.

³⁰ Then Phinehas stood up, and executed judgment, so the plague was stopped.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.

³⁰ "And I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none.

¹² He said to them, "Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you."

²⁴ saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you all those who sail with you.'

⁷ By faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared a box-shaped vessel for the salvation of his household, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

²³ It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

⁷ The LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

⁹ Now, look, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me. Moreover I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

¹ Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews. ² For there were that said, "We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live." ³ Some also there were that said, "We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine." ⁴ There were also some who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Look, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. Neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards."

¹⁹ He leads priests away stripped, and overthrows the mighty.

¹² From out of the populous city, men groan. The soul of the wounded cries out, yet God doesn't regard the folly.

²⁸ so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him. He heard the cry of the afflicted.

⁹ Or do you have an arm like God? Can you thunder with a voice like him?

¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked. As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none.

⁵ "Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD; "I will place in safety the one who longs for it."

² For you, God, are my strength. Why have you rejected me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

² Attend to me, and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and moan, ³ Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the oppression of the wicked. For they bring suffering on me. In anger they hold a grudge against me.

All day long, he attacks and oppresses me. ² My enemies want to swallow me up all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me.

³ A widow was in that city, and she often came to him, saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' ⁴ He would not for a while, but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God, nor respect people, ⁵ yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her justice, or else she will wear me out by her continual coming.'" ⁶ The Lord said, "Listen to what the unrighteous judge says. ⁷ Won't God avenge his chosen ones, who are crying out to him day and night, and yet he exercises patience with them?

¹³ So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD, which he did not keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire thereby, ¹⁴ and did not inquire of the LORD: therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

²² In the time of his distress, he trespassed yet more against the LORD, this same king Ahaz. ²³ For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, which struck him; and he said, "Because the gods of the kings of Aram helped them, so I will sacrifice to them, that they may help me." But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in Shaddai, and call on God at all times?

²² For I do not know how to give flattering titles; or else my Maker would soon take me away.

³ I will get my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.

¹³ "But those who are godless in heart lay up anger. They do not cry for help when he binds them.

⁸ The LORD will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life.

⁶ I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; my spirit diligently inquires:

⁶² At midnight I will rise to give thanks to you, because of your righteous ordinances.

⁵ Let the faithful ones rejoice in glory. Let them sing for joy on their beds.

¹ Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw near, when you will say, "I have no pleasure in them;"

²¹ They will pass through it, greatly distressed and hungry; and it will happen that when they are hungry, they will worry, and curse by their king and by their God. They will turn their faces upward,

¹³ and have forgotten the LORD your Maker, who stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and fear continually all the day because of the fury of the oppressor, when he makes ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

⁵ For your husband is your Creator; the LORD of hosts is his name: and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; the God of the whole earth shall he be called.

²⁵ But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

¹⁹ Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

²⁶ And God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the flying creatures of the sky, and over the tame animals, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creature that crawls on the earth." And it was so.

⁷ And God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

⁸ But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of Shaddai gives them understanding.

²² Look, God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?

¹² Blessed is the man whom you discipline, LORD, and teach out of your Law;

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save; even to the LORD, but he did not answer them.

⁶ Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment. ⁷ Their sin proceeds forth from fatness. Their hearts overflow with imaginations. ⁸ They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression.

³ Have mercy on us, LORD, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud.

²⁸ Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;

¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High." ¹⁵ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit. ¹⁶ Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying, "Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms; ¹⁷ who made the world like a wilderness, and overthrew its cities; who did not release his prisoners to their home?"

³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him.

²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to Shaddai, you shall be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents. ²⁴ Lay your treasure in the dust, the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Shaddai will be your treasure, and precious silver to you. ²⁶ For then you will delight yourself in Shaddai, and shall lift up your face to God. ²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You shall pay your vows.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? ⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him?

²⁰ I cry to you, and you do not answer me. I stand up, and you gaze at me.

¹⁷ He has responded to the prayer of the destitute, and has not despised their prayer.

⁸ The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

²⁹ The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

⁹ He who turns away his ear from hearing the Law, even his prayer is an abomination.

¹ Guard your step when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil. ² Do not be rash with your mouth, and do not let your heart be hasty to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven, and you on earth. Therefore let your words be few. ³ For as a dream comes with a multitude of cares, so a fool's speech with a multitude of words.

¹⁵ When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ Therefore thus says the LORD, 'Look, I will bring disaster on them, which they shall not be able to escape; and they shall cry to me, but I will not listen to them.

¹⁴ They haven't cried to me with their heart, but they wail on their beds. They cut themselves for grain and new wine. They turn away from me.

² They cry to me, 'My God, we Israel acknowledge you.' ³ Israel has cast off that which is good. The enemy will pursue him.

²² Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.

⁷ And in praying, do not use vain repetitions, as the unbelievers do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.

²¹ He said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Command that these, my two sons, may sit, one on your right hand, and one on your left hand, in your Kingdom." ²² But Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able."

³ You ask, and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures.

¹¹ Look, he goes by me, and I do not see him. He passes on also, but I do not perceive him.

¹⁹ If it is a matter of strength, look, he is mighty. And if of justice, who will summon him?

⁷ "Look, I cry out 'Injustice.' but there is no justice.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him. That I might come even to his seat.

⁸ "If I go east, he is not there; if west, I can't find him; ⁹ He works to the north, but I can't see him. He turns south, but I can't catch a glimpse of him. ¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come forth like gold.

¹² Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen up against me, such as breathe out violence. ¹³ I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. ¹⁴ Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

⁵ Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will act. ⁶ And he will make your righteousness go forth as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

⁵ My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from him.

⁸ Trust in him at all times, O people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.

⁵ I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. ⁶ I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; my spirit diligently inquires: ⁷ "Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?" Selah. ¹⁰ And I thought, "This is my wounding, that the right hand of the Most High has changed."

² Clouds and darkness are around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

¹⁸ Therefore the LORD will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you, for the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him.

¹⁰ Who is among you who fears the LORD, who listens to the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness, and has no light, let him trust in the name of the LORD, and rely on his God.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of me," says the LORD.

⁷ But as for me, I will look to the LORD. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. ⁸ Do not rejoice against me, my enemy. When I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, the LORD will be a light to me. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my case, and executes judgment for me. He will bring me forth to the light. I will see his righteousness.

³³ Who could bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who justifies. ³⁴ Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

¹² The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."

⁵ But now it is come to you, and you faint. It touches you, and you are troubled.

¹⁴ How much less shall I answer him, And choose my words to argue with him?

¹⁵ Look, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.

¹⁵ Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud. ¹⁶ "Now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold on me. ¹⁷ In the night season my bones are pierced in me, and the pains that gnaw me take no rest. ¹⁸ By great force is my garment disfigured. It binds me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire. I have become like dust and ashes. ²⁰ I cry to you, and you do not answer me. I stand up, and you gaze at me. ²¹ You have turned to be cruel to me. With the might of your hand you persecute me. ²² You lift me up to the wind, and drive me with it. You dissolve me in the storm. ²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, To the house appointed for all living. ²⁴ "However doesn't one stretch out a hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help? ²⁵ Did I not weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn't my soul grieved for the needy? ²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came; When I waited for light, there came darkness. ²⁷ My heart is troubled, and doesn't rest. Days of affliction have come on me. ²⁸ I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help. ²⁹ I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin grows black and peels from me. My bones are burned with heat. ³¹ Therefore my harp has turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.

¹¹ Is your loving kindness declared in the grave? Or your faithfulness in Destruction? ¹² Are your wonders made known in the dark? Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? ¹³ But to you, LORD, I have cried. In the morning, my prayer comes before you. ¹⁴ LORD, why do you reject my soul? Why do you hide your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath has gone over me. Your terrors have cut me off.

³² then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

⁸ "How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me, my compassion is aroused. ⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of my anger. I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of you; and I will not come in wrath.

²⁰ And look, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time."

¹¹ All discipline seems for the moment painful, not joyful; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby. ¹² Therefore, lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

¹ After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day.

² See now, I have opened my mouth. My tongue has spoken in my mouth.

⁸ "Surely you have spoken in my hearing, I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ 'I am clean, without disobedience. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Look, he finds occasions against me. He counts me for his enemy. ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.' ¹² "Look, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man.

³⁵ 'Job speaks without knowledge. His words are without wisdom.' ³⁶ I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men. ³⁷ For he adds rebellion to his sin. He claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God."

² "Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
