¹³ But the publican, who stood at a distance, did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying; God, be merciful to me a sinner.

¹² And when he was afflicted he sought the favour of the Lord his God, and humbled himself exceedingly before the God of his fathers, ¹³ and prayed to him, and he hearkened to him and heard his cry, and brought him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. So Manasses knew that the Lord himself is God.

¹⁹ and how God hearkened to him at the words of his prayer; and all his sins and his apostasies; and the places on which he built mounts and erected bowers, and graven images before his conversion; behold they are written among the words of the seers.

²³ and did not humble himself before the Lord as Manasses his father had humbled himself. Because his son Amon multiplied transgression,

⁶ I said: Lord, I blush, and am ashamed to lift up, O my God, my face to thee; because our iniquities are multiplied over our head, and our transgressions are heaped up to heaven.

⁶ therefore I abhor myself, and am ready to drop into dissolution, and account myself as dust and ashes.

⁷ Remember not the sins and follies of my youth; according to thy mercy remember me, Lord, for thy goodness sake.

¹¹ For the sake of thy name therefore, Lord, pardon this sin of mine, for it is manifold;

¹² Because evils without number encompassed me; mine iniquities had overtaken me, therefore, I was notable to look up; they were multiplied above the hairs of my head, therefore my heart failed me.

⁴ I said, "Lord be merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee."

⁵ Whereupon I said, Ah! Woe is me! [for I was confounded] for being a man, and having unclean lips; and dwelling among a people of unclean lips, I have seen with mine eyes the king the Lord of Hosts.

⁵ For it will meet them who practise righteousness, and they will remember their ways. Behold thou wast angry when we sinned; because of this we wandered ⁶ and became all of us as unclean, and all our righteousness was like a polluted rag; and for our iniquities we have fallen like leaves; so that the wind will sweep us away.

⁶³ that thou mayst remember and be ashamed, and never more be able to open thy mouth, because of thy confusion when I make a complete atonement for thee according to all that thou hast done, saith the Lord.

⁵ we have committed iniquity; we have transgressed and apostatised and turned away from thy commandments, and from thy judgments,

⁷ To thee, Lord, belongeth righteousness; but to us confusion of face as at this day; to the man Juda and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel; and to those near and to them far off, in every land where thou hast scattered them for their breach of covenant of which they have been guilty. ⁸ In thee, Lord, is our righteousness. Though to us belongeth confusion of face; to our kings, and our chiefs and our fathers, who have sinned against thee: ⁹ with the Lord our God are tender mercies and forgivenesses. Because we apostatised ¹⁰ and did not hearken to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws which he set before us by the ministry of his servants the prophets; ¹¹ and all Israel transgressed thy law, and declined to hearken to thy voice; therefore upon us came the curse and the execration which is written in the law of Moses the servant of God. Because we sinned against him,

¹⁸ incline, my God, thine ear and hear. Open thine eyes and behold our desolation and that of thy city which is called by thy name. For we do not for our own righteousness present our piteous case before thee; but we cast ourselves upon thy tender mercies, Lord, which are many. ¹⁹ O Lord hear! O Lord, be appeased! Attend, Lord! Defer not, my God, for thine own sake! for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

¹³ Go then and learn what this meaneth, "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice;" for I did not come to call righteous men, but sinners to reformation.

⁸ Upon seeing this, Simon Peter prostrated himself at the knees of Jesus, and said, Depart from me, for I, O Lord, am a sinful man.

⁶ So Jesus went with them. But when he was now at no great distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying, Sir, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: ⁷ and for that reason I did not think myself worthy to come to thee. Say but a word, and my servant will be healed.

¹⁸ I will rise and go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, ¹⁹ and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. ²⁰ Accordingly he arose and went to his father. But he keeping yet at a distance, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. ²¹ Whereupon the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

¹² And as he was entering a certain village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance

⁴⁰ Upon which the other, in reply, rebuked him, saying, Hast thou no fear of God even when thou art suffering the same punishment? ⁴¹ We indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our crimes. But this man hath done nothing amiss. ⁴² Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest to thy kingdom. ⁴³ Whereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, Today thou shalt be with me in paradise.

⁴⁸ And all the multitudes who had crowded to the spectacle, seeing what had happened, beat their breasts and returned home.

³⁷ Upon hearing this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men, brethren, What shall we do?

⁸ but God confirmeth his love for us, because while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

²⁰ Now the law came in a little way, so that transgression abounded, but where sin abounded, favour superabounded, ²¹ that as sin had reigned by death, so favour might reign by means' of a justification for everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹¹ For behold! this very thing; your being affected with a godly sorrow, what solicitude it hath wrought in you! nay, what apologies! what indignation! what fear! what longing desire! what zeal! what avengement! By your whole conduct you have shewn yourselves to be clear in this matter.

¹⁵ This is a faithful word and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am a chief;

¹⁶ Let us therefore come with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find favour for seasonable assistance.

¹² for I will be merciful to their iniquities, and no more remember their sins and their transgressions."

⁸ If we say that we have not sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, He is faithful, and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a false speaker, and his word is not in us.
